A History of Giving Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2008
Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS.
2009
In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide. Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us for the 28th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition. Today we celebrate all that’s been accomplished in the past six weeks. It’s astonishing to realize that in the 27 editions of Easter Bonnet Competition, we’ve raised more than $54 million together. With your help and great support, last year Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS provided $4.3 million in support for The Actors Fund. What began with the creation of the HIV/AIDS Initiative in 1988 has grown to support for the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative in 1996, the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, the Actors Fund Work Program, The Dancers’ Resource and more. Since 1988 BC/ EFA has awarded The Actors Fund more than $68 million. In doing so, together we ensure that everyone in the entertainment industry and performing arts community has access to a safety net of essential social services. Your generosity also allows BC/EFA’s National Grants Program to support more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide, reaching hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who desperately need a helping hand. Earlier this year, Broadway Cares distributed more than $1.5 million to 117 food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs in 36 states and Washington, DC. And just last month, BC/EFA awarded $765,000 to 30 national AIDS service and advocacy organizations, with another large grant round scheduled for June. Since 1988 more than $76 million has been put to good work across the country. In these times of continued hardship, you make it possible for Broadway Cares to reach men, women and children across the country who do not have the resources that many of us can be thankful for. Your efforts over the last few weeks – and your presence here today – will help buy lifesaving medications, fund counseling services, provide groceries and home delivered meals, maintain supportive housing and provide essential emergency financial support to keep individuals insured and families in their homes. Your support means those who would otherwise face nearly insurmountable challenges can take care of themselves and those they love. Sometimes the calls for help can be overwhelming. They leave you wondering what any of us can do that will make a difference. How many posters or Playbills can be signed; how any appeals made? But every dollar in a bucket, every auctioned song and cabaret benefit, each autographed souvenir sold makes one of our grants a little larger and someone’s life just that much better. Thank you for standing up for the most vulnerable among us. Because of you there is hope for many who have been pushed to the margins of society. Essential social services are being provided for those who find themselves struggling with a personal crisis or simply need some help to recover and take charge of their lives once again. Thank you for joining hands with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Whether you are part of our theatrical family, a volunteer, a member of Broadway Cares’ Angels Circle, a corporate sponsor, a theatre-loving ticket buyer or just a pal of any one of us, your commitment and generosity of spirit radiates well beyond the fun we have this afternoon. Your presence ensures that “what we do together makes a difference.” Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director
A Bit of Bonnet History The precursor to the Easter Bonnet Competition was an informal show in 1986 initiated by wardrobe supervisor Gayle Patton called “The Queen of Hearts.” It took place backstage at the Palace Theatre where the original La Cage aux Folles was a smash hit. Individual cast members from La Cage were judged on poise, personality and talent with the rest of the company voting by putting dollar bills in a jar for each contestant. The effort raised $1,200 for the National AIDS Fund. The event was so much fun for the La Cage company that the following year, Gayle suggested an “Easter Bonnet Competition.” Other Broadway companies were invited to participate. Fundraising ideas flourished, bonnets became more elaborate, stars joined in as presenters and performers and by 1990 – when it was presented on stage at the Majestic Theatre – the Easter Bonnet Competition had become the Broadway community’s premier AIDS fundraising event. Produced by Suzanne Ishee and a host of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for its first eight years, the Easter Bonnet returned to the Palace Theatre in 1995, produced for the first time by the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS production team. In 1998, the show moved to the New Amsterdam Theatre where for nine years it felt as much at home as the peacocks that decorate the theatre’s ornate interior. In 2007, the event followed The Lion King to the Minskoff Theatre. 1987 $ 18,000 1988 $ 51,000 1989 $ 137,000 1990 $ 226,000 1991 $ 279,000 1992 $ 500,000 1993 $ 848,000 1994 $1,001,000 1995 $1,127,000
1996 $1,304,000 1997 $1,474,000 1998 $1,793,000 1999 $2,096,000 2000 $2,129,000 2001 $2,275,000 2002 $1,826,000 2003 $2,150,000 2004 $3,435,000
2005 $2,849,000 2006 $3,187,000 2007 $3,345,000 2008 $3,734,000 2009 $3,408,000 2010 $3,265,700 2011 $3,706,085 2012 $3,677,855 2013 $4,250,542
TOTAL: $54,092,182 Today we stage the 28th edition. Broadway Cares is deeply grateful to all whom, over the years, have made this event into a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies. broadwaycares.org

NATIONAL GRANTS Healthy Meals Made Possible With $1.5 Million in Grants The work of 117 food programs across the country received good news in January as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awarded its first round of annual grants, which totaled $1,565,000. A successful Gypsy of the Year fundraising effort bolstered the generosity and determination of the theatre community and Broadway Cares’ loyal donors, enabling BC/EFA to award the grants to 117 food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs nationwide. With this year’s grants, Broadway Cares was able to maintain the record-setting level of grantmaking set in this category in recent years. In the current economic climate, affording healthy food choices is a significant challenge for many. According to the USDA, more than 23 million people in America live in “food deserts,” which are urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy and affordable food. These mitigating factors are made even more challenging with the costs of medications to fight HIV/AIDS and its symptoms. In 2014, Broadway Cares awarded food service and meal delivery grants, ranging in size from $5,000 to $35,000, to organizations in 36 states and Washington, D.C. Recipients include outreach centers, food kitchens, transitional residences, outreach ministries and personal home care programs. “There is no more important part of BC/EFA’s grant-making mission than ensuring that a person who is sick has a decent meal,” Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola said. “Certainly for people living with HIV/AIDS, good, nutritious food is an essential component of lifesaving medical regimens are to have a lasting impact.” Since 2006, BC/EFA has, with the extraordinary generosity and support of donors and the entire theatre community, awarded more than $11.2 million in grants to food pantries and meal delivery programs across the country.

INTERNATIONAL GRANTS Bc/Efa Grants Top $3.65 Million to South African Organizations Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS surpassed the $3.65 million mark in grants to South African HIV/AIDS organizations – including $100,000 awarded this year – thanks to the tireless fundraising efforts of Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King. This marks a significant milestone in a long-term partnership between the Tony Awardwinning musical and BC/EFA, made possible by the commitment and generosity of the hundreds of professionals on stage, backstage and behind the scenes at The Lion King on Broadway and across the country. Since the show first began fundraising for Broadway Cares in 1997, the Broadway and national touring productions have raised more than $6.6 million with $3,557,000 going to South Africa. An additional $3.1 million has been awarded to the vital social service programs of The Actors Fund and more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations across the United States. In recognition of this extraordinary fundraising and in honor of the South African company members who have joined their American cast mates in these efforts, BC/EFA has sent at least 50 percent of the monies raised by The Lion King companies to AIDS and family service organizations in South Africa, a country beset with the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world. “Well over 200 South African actors have worked on The Lion King over the course of its life and they are at the heart and soul of the show,” said Thomas Schumacher, Producer and President of Disney Theatrical Productions and longtime BC/EFA Trustee. “It is humbling to realize what our Lion King family has been able to give back to their glorious country. This staggering achievement is the result of hundreds of dedicated individuals from all nations working tirelessly, selflessly and on their own accord. We stand in awe of their accomplishment.” BC/EFA salutes The Lion King family. We look forward to our ongoing collaboration and unique outreach, even as we look to the day when a vaccine for AIDS makes our concerted efforts obsolete.
