A History of Giving For more than 35 years, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has been the philanthropic heart of Broadway, helping provide meals and medication, health care and hope to those facing hardship and personal crises. Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. In May 1992, the two merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Today, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the major supporter of the social service programs at the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund) and also awards annual grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Contributions
Dear Friends, It feels so good to return to the gorgeous New Amsterdam Theatre with the 32nd edition of Red Bucket Follies. The last time we gathered here to celebrate a fall fundraising campaign was December 2019. Broadway Cares events have returned one at a time since the dark days of the pandemic. With this performance today, all of our events have now retaken the stage. To say these are eventful times would be an understatement. While we have come through the shutdown that befell us, the return to life as we knew it (or, perhaps, mistakenly think we remember it) has been both challenging and joyous, demanding and uplifting. Thankfully, your generosity and enthusiasm have been a lifeboat for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and particularly for those who depend on you and us all for support, care and assistance. And though Red Bucket Follies has been on a long hiatus, our important work has not slowed. This year, we have awarded $7.6 million to the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund) to sustain, ensure and enhance services for all in the entertainment industry and performing arts. That includes $2 million for The Friedman Health Center, $1 million for the HIV/AIDS Initiative, $1 million for the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and much more. Because of your support, Broadway Cares in October awarded a $1 million emergency grant to provide immediate assistance for entertainment professionals affected by the record-long SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes. Additionally, our National Grants Program provided a record $9.1 million to more than 450 social service organizations across the country. You’ve provided much-needed assistance for tens of thousands who might otherwise have been left to face serious health and personal challenges on their own, without a safety net of services or the embrace of someone who cares. I’m consistently impressed at the invaluable resources created when the unique generosity of our theater community is combined with the immeasurable commitment for doing good that drives the support of our donors and volunteers. Today, we celebrate the 26 Broadway, seven Off-Broadway and 13 national touring productions that banded together in goodwill this fall. Now, as the New Am fills and the lights dim for the first Red Bucket Follies in four years, it is with a full heart and immense gratitude that I say to you, on behalf of all of us at Broadway Cares: Welcome back!
Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director
A Bit of Red Bucket Follies History Each fall, our community comes together to celebrate a collective, steadfast commitment to helping those facing the challenges of HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. It all started at the St. James Theatre on November 28, 1989, with the first Gypsy of the Year competition. Hosted by Jonathan Hadary, Tyne Daly and the company of Gypsy, this fledgling event - produced by Maria Di Dia and Tom Viola and directed by Michael Lichtefeld - raised more than $64,000 and featured the companies of A Chorus Line, Black & Blue, Cats, Grand Hotel, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, The Heidi Chronicles, The Threepenny Opera and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom/The Lady in Question. Today, we stage the 32nd edition of this beloved classic, honoring the legacy of Gypsy of the Year and celebrating the second year of its new name and renewed spirit, Red Bucket Follies. We are deeply grateful to all who have made this event so wildly successful. You are the heart, soul and muscle of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. You efforts enable Broadway Cares to continue to offer essential assistance to those in the entertainment industry and to more than 450 social service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999

ENTERTAINMENT COMMUNITY FUND
A Timeline of Lifelines: 35 Years of Lifesaving Support Thanks to supporters like you, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the single largest financial supporter of the safety net of programs provided by the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund). In 2023, Broadway Cares awarded $7.6 million to support the Fund’s work helping everyone in entertainment and the performing arts. That work provides emergency financial assistance, health care, counseling and more. Additionally, in October, Broadway Cares awarded a $1 million emergency grant to provide immediate assistance for entertainment professionals affected by the record-long SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes. Broadway Cares and the Fund’s history together started 35 years ago when Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS funded the creation of the HIV/AIDS Initiative. In 1996, Broadway Cares expanded its support to launch the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, and now champions a full suite of programs including Addiction and Recovery Services, The Dancers’ Resource and The Stage Managers’ Project. Since The Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts’ inception in 2017, Broadway Cares has supported the medical facility which provides care that specifically addresses the needs of its patients from Broadway and the performing arts. For the Fund’s Artists Health Insurance Resource Center, its services become even more invaluable when social, political and economic factors complicate matters for the industry as more professionals lose union coverage. During the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, Broadway Cares provided more than $18.9 million in support to the Fund. Since the last Red Bucket Follies, Broadway Cares also provided the $1 million lead gift to the Every Artist Insured initiative, which expands on the Artists Health Insurance Resource Center. To learn more about your support of the Fund through Broadway Cares, visit broadwaycares.org/entertainmentcommunityfund.

Agencies Adapt to Unique Challenges with Unmatched Care Darryl Cannady will stop at nothing to keep his community healthy. For more than 30 years, the executive director at South Central Educational Development in Bluefield, WV, has been doing vital work supporting people living with HIV/AIDS in a rural and remote region. And with the closest infectious disease doctor at least 50 miles away from so many he serves, Cannady is powered by a scrappy and adaptable energy that ensures safety for his clients. “We have the food pantry and we offer emergency services,” Cannady said. “We’ll help with electrical bills and rent. We’ve purchased batteries and tires for cars. We will pretty much try to provide the client whatever they need to ensure they can make it to their medical appointments or have a healthy meal.” During these particularly unprecedented past few years, agencies across the country have had to be like Cannady, staying agile and responsive to their communities. Broadway Cares’ donors play a vital role in making sure those organizations can continue to provide lifesaving care - like South Central Educational Development, which received a $10,000 grant this year. They’ve been a grantee of Broadway Cares for 27 years. Broadway Cares’ 2023 National Grants Program awarded $9.1 million to 451 social service organizations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Some 650 miles from West Virginia, the Liberty Community Services staff in New Haven, CT, adapted its housing program to aid the rapidly increasing number of unhoused people seeking help. “These last three years have overflowed with challenges to our community,” Executive Director Jim Pettinelli said. Despite hurdles, the Liberty team has opened new lines of services and scaled up existing ones, buoyed by a $10,000 grant from Broadway Cares. Earlier this year, a record $2.8 million was awarded to 141 food service and meal delivery programs in January and $1.13 million to 43 of the largest AIDS service and nationally recognized advocacy organizations in April. For N Street Village in Washington, D.C., this year’s $7,500 grant means clients like Iva, who’s been unhoused for more than a decade, could move into permanent housing. “N Street gave me the resources and tools to reclaim my life,” Iva said. “I know it would not have been possible without you.”
