Crowned the “Grandmother of the French New Wave”, the 90-year-old filmmaker was acknowledged with an Academy Honorary Award this year for her lifelong contribution to cinema. Her most recent documentary Face Places earned Varda her first Oscar nomination, making her the eldest nominee ever. The programme is an ode to one of the major directors of the French New Wave, her art and freedom out and in the movement. Varda’s works are marked by the seal of social involvement and of her life-long companion Jacques Demy, whose films were showcased in a retrospective programme co-organised by Broadway Cinematheque and Alliance Française de Hong Kong back in 2009. 9 years later, we have this special chance given during Le French May to dive into Varda’s extraordinary world.
Tribute to Agnès Varda will present a selection of 12 major films of Agnès Varda. The programme is completed with 4 films chosen for families and for your delight.
