The Fear System The fear system is what takes in threats and sends out responses. Certain parts of the brain control different parts of the fear system in our bodies. These six main parts are the amygdala, the brain stem, the hippocampus, the hypothalamus, the prefrontal cortex, and the thalamus. The amygdala, as previously mentioned, scans for threats and signals the body to respond. The brain stem triggers a behavior known as the “freeze response”. The “freeze response” is when the prey has almost been caught by the prey, causing the prey freezes up, pretending to be dead. The hippocampus produces the previously mentioned “fight-or-flight” response. The hypothalamus tells the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline hormones, causing the body to make almost superhuman behaviors, such as strength and speed. The pre-frontal cortex takes the event happening and compares it to a similar event that happened in the past, possibly causing the person to avoid the threat. I would like to dedicate this book to Riley Sapp, who never stopped encouraging me from writing this story; my teacher Mrs. Brock, who was the first person to initially have planted this idea in my head; and to my wonderful parents, who never tried to limit my creativity.
Author Page May is a student attending Signal Mountain Middle-High school. When she’s not drawing and writing amazing children's books, you can most likely find her practicing her oboe or playing on her piano. She values the relationships she has with everyone and is not afraid to have a good conversation over a good cup of tea.

About the Author: My name is Benjamin. I am a student in a Hamilton County school. I love watching and playing a lot of different sports including basketball, golf and soccer. I am the middle child and I have 2 sisters. In school, I enjoy learning about the history of the world.
About the Author My name is Trey, and I am a middle school student at a Hamilton County Middle/ High School. I love to watch soccer, and I play soccer for a select club here in Chattanooga. I enjoy going to school and learning new things.
Nash R. Nash is a 7th grade student at a school in Tennessee who has a passion for music, LEGOS, acting, art, and video games. While doing this, he maintainshis grades and is an Honor Student. His favorite subject is Social Studies, and he loves hanging out with his friends during social and lunch. He has 3 siblings, 2 brothers and lives with his Mom and Dad.
Author’s Note
Hi, my name is Sara Jane. I go to a local middle and high school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I have one sibling, an older brother, but I have 6 pets that take up most of my family. I have grown up in Chattanooga, and have gone to two different schools within the city. I am in 8th grade, and my favorite subject in school is mathematics. I am writing this children’s book for a special class project. This project includes two of my main hobbies. I love to read and I like to draw. My other hobbies include listening to music, playing sports, playing with my pets, cooking, shopping, and doing things with my family and friends. I have always been interested in the Civil Rights Movement, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. I believe that this topic will always be relevant in our society and community, so I like to learn about this time period in as much depth as I can.
About the Author Antoinette, the Author of the story Windy’s Drought was born in Tennessee and lives in a house of seven, including her dog, Twiggy. Antoinette loves the color blue and spends her spare time reading and spending time on her phone She loves sports, including soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball, and tennis. Antoinette has a brother and 2 sisters, who can get on her nerves sometimes Antoinette wrote this story when she was in middle school and based this story off of her aunt’s pet bird, named Windy.
