History of The World Cup
Qualification Process About 200 teams participate in the
On May 28th, 1928, the FIFA committee decided to have a World Cup– a competition that rivals the Super bowl to determine the best team in the world in Men’s soccer. In 1929, the FIFA committee decided the first host of World Cup would be Uruguay. Only 4 European teams competed in the World Cup. Uruguay won the first World Cup, and they were the first and only team to win and not try to defend their title the next year. The World Cup became popular over the years with more countries participating and more fans supporting, but with more dedicated fans, until it became arguably the most supported and watched in history.
World Cup qualification in today’s World
The first world cup had 13 teams. In the 1934, World Cup raised it to 16 teams except there was no group stage. Since World War II happened the 1942 and 1946 world cups were skipped. In 1950 they had the group stage and still had 16 teams- the first world cup to do this. In the 1982 world cup, they brought in 24 teams. In 1998 they used a format with 32 teams, a group stage, and a knockout round. They have used this format in every world cup since then. But FIFA is thinking about changing the format from 32 teams to 40 teams in 2026 as soccer’s increase in popularity worldwide has led to more interest.
against another country’s .5 team to de-
Cup, but only 32 teams participate in the World Cup. Each region of continents has a certain number of teams that can be in the World Cup. Europe has 13 teams that can be in it. South America has 4.5 places that can be in it. CONCACAF which is the Caribbean and North America. The CONCACAF has 3.5 teams that can compete in the World Cup. Africa has 5 teams that can compete. Asia has 4.5 teams that can compete. Oceania has .5 teams that can compete. A .5 means that if you are the last team in that country you have to compete cide if you get in or not. To decide which teams get in for each continent you have to play a good number of games against other teams and then they do a point system which is a win is 3 points a tie is 1 point and a loss is 0 points. After all the teams play an equal amount of games they look at the points and the teams with the most points either get 1 more game for a chance to the World Cup or an automatic trip to the World Cup.
World Cup Process After you get into the World Cup the rankings you finished in do not matter. Because to decide the groups they do a random draw out of a hat. The number 1 team could t be put in a group with the number 2 3 and 4 team or with the number 30 31 and 32 team. As you can tell it is completely random. There are 8 different groups. They are the A,B,C,D,E,F,G, and H groups. Only 2 teams from each group plays in the knockout stage. Every team plays every other team in the group with the same point system of 3 points per win, 1 point per tie, and 0 points per loss. The 2 teams with the highest points go to the knockout stage. The knockout stage is where 16 teams are put in tournament format and play each other. The spot you finish in your group decides if you have a easier match in the first round. You have to win or lose. If it is a tie then it goes to extra time. If it is still a tie after that, it goes into penalty kicks. You keep moving on in the bracket until you lose or reach the final and win. Whoever wins the final is the World Cup champion of those 4 years until the next World Cup.
