Orthopedic Surgery Orthopedic Surgery is a common field of medicine that deals with the musculoskeletal system. They use surgery and other methods to help heal injuries that may have come from sports, aging, over usage, trauma and other causes. How to become an orthopedic surgeon? In order to become an orthopedic surgeon, one must have a high school diploma, a college degree and a medical degree. So one must go to three different schools and complete at least 4 years of medical school, 4 years of college and the complete the full 6 years of middle/ high school. In college, one will need to major in pre-medicine or biology which will help prepare them for medical school and their career ahead. This will help prepare one for medical school and give one a expectation of what is to come. Then one must go a hospital to complete the residency program which usually last 4-5 years. In the residency program, one is payed but not very much. It usually averages $40,000 to $50,000 a year. Next, a doctor must go through their fellowship which does not last long. It usually last around a year. It is the last training before one becomes an official orthopedic surgeon. One becomes known as a fellow during this time. A lot of hard training must be gone through before one can become a surgeon because of all the responsibilities that come with this job. There are peoples lives at stake so it is very important that one has enough training so that one know what to do in any circumstance. After you complete all of this, one must find a hospital to work at that has this open position. On average an orthopedic surgeon can be paid 450,000 dollars a year. This what must be done before becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

What does an orthopedic surgeon do? An orthopedic surgeon treats patients with problems in their musculoskeletal system which includes nerves, tendons, bones, muscles, joints and ligaments. First the surgeons will examine you and get a physical report to help them decide what is wrong. Most of the time they will be the ones to diagnose you and decide what the choice of action should be. Orthopedic surgeons can choose lots of different focuses since orthopedic surgery is such a large field. However, some can just focus on orthopedic surgery in general. Orthopedic surgeons must work long hours that can be around 60 hours per week and can include urgent night calls. Since they deal with all 206 bones in the body there is a lot for them to do. Once they finish the surgery or mechanical fix process they must have the research done of what the patient needs to do in the rehabilitation project to go back to having full strength of the limb, tendon, muscle or whatever was hurt. Often times, an orthopedic surgeon will be a consult for other doctors because of their knowledge of the body. Orthopedic surgeons sometimes perform replacements like knee replacements, hip replacements and shoulder replacements. Other common surgeries are ankle replacements, patellar tendonitis surgery, ACL reconstruction, spine surgery, arthroscopic surgery, and rotator cuff repair. Orthopedic surgeons have very busy schedules and have a lot of work and consults that they must do. They are very important in hospitals because of their in depth knowledge of the musculoskeletal system.


What types of specialties can you go into as an orthopedic surgeon? There are many different specialties that an orthopedic surgeon can go into. These include sports medicine, trauma surgeons, hand surgeons, shoulder and elbow surgery, spine surgery, hip and knee surgery, orthopedic oncology, pediatric orthopedic surgery, foot and ankle surgery, and orthopedic general surgery. In sports medicine, surgeons deal with injuries that have to do with sports for all different types of athletes. Trauma surgeons deal with musculoskeletal injuries that are urgent and need someone who can think fast and can provide care for their patients quickly. Next, hand surgeons deal with the injuries of bones in your hand and wrist. These surgeons deal with adults and pediatric cases. Shoulder and Elbow surgeons deal with the bones in the shoulder and elbow of patient like the name implies. These surgeons deal with people who have injuries from overuse, sports or traumas. Spine surgeons deal with the spinal cord and have to deal with very serious injuries. Hip and knee surgeons usually perform joint replacement surgeries. Orthopedic oncologists are cancer doctors. They deal with cancer and tumors in the musculoskeletal system. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons deal with kids with injuries that have to do with the musculoskeletal system. They must work well with children and have the ability to show comfort to the family. Foot and ankle surgeons deal with injuries, trauma, deformities, and fractures. Lastly, general orthopedic surgeons deal with patients with a variety of musculoskeletal injuries. They diagnose them, and treat them. There is a wide variety of fields that one can go into if you choose to take this career path.

What are the leading medical schools that have good training programs for orthopedic surgery? All around America there are very prestigious medical schools that can give you the best education on orthopedic surgery and the study of medicine in general. The top three, according to Start Class Medical Schools will be named and basic information regarding the cost, acceptance rate, overall ranking and more will be shared. First on the list is The University of San Francisco School of Medicine. This is located in San Francisco, California. It is ranked 2nd overall in the national ranking of medical schools. The acceptance rate is very low at a stunning 2.2 percent. It is very difficult to get into. You must have a MCAT score of around 36 out of 45. You GPA should be around 3.85. It is a very expensive college like it is very hard to get into. The in-state tuition is $32,365 per year and out of state tuition is $44,610 per year. Next, the number two for best orthopedic schools is Johns Hopkins school of medicine. It is ranked 3rd overall. Johns Hopkins has a very expensive in-state and out of state tuition. The in state and out of state tuition is $47,284. The acceptance rate for this schools is 1.8%. It is a very hard school to get into as they only have around 480 students currently enrolled. The average GPA is 3.91 and the average MCAT score is 36 out of 45. It is located in Baltimore, Maryland.. Lastly, the third school that we will be talking about is Perelman School of Medicine. This school is ranked 4th out of every school in the nation. The yearly tuition for in-state and out of state students is $52,478. The acceptance rate is 2.9%. The average GPA is 3.88 and the average MCAT score is 38 out of 45. It is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These are very great medical schools that are a good goal to shoot for when deciding which .

Throughout the nation, there are very great hospitals that can give you the best chance to show you talent in orthopedic surgery. I will be taking you through the top three hospitals according to US News: Health that feature the specialty orthopedic surgery. The three that I will be talking about are Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio. Next, Mayo Clinic is ranked second in the national rankings of best orthopedic surgery program. They had around 62,00 admissions in the last year they reported. This hospital is highly ranked in other specialties as well. It is a well rounded hospital. It is a general and surgical hospital. Lastly, Cleveland Clinic located in Cleveland, Ohio. It is a general and surgical hospital and does not have a trauma center. It had around 55,000 patients admitted in the last year reported.
