A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO
Spend Your Summer with BPL This summer, Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) has a terrific line-up of programs to keep people of all ages engaged and entertained. One of our biggest events of the year—our Summer Reading Kickoff—will take place on Thursday, June 6 at 10:30 am at Central Library. It will feature Bubbles the Clown, music by Elizabeth Mitchell, puppets from Making Books Sing and a thrilling performance by the production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway. We hope you will also join us on Wednesdays for Lunchapalooza!, a lunchtime concert series on Central Library’s Plaza. Every Wednesday from May 22 to June 26, food trucks will sell lunch on the Plaza from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. From 11:30 am to 12:15 pm we will offer storytelling for children, and from 12:30 to 2 pm we will have family-friendly music for adults. Acts range in style from samba and klezmer to hip hop and American traditional. The concert series will give everyone a chance to experience new foods and music while enjoying the beautiful summer weather outdoors on our Plaza. While we continue to look forward to the summertime, we are hard at work rebuilding from the hurricane. I am pleased to report that we have reopened four of the six libraries closed because of damage from Hurricane Sandy. Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach and Gravesend libraries reopened in January, and Red Hook Library in April. Library service is incredibly important for all communities, but even more in those neighborhoods recovering from the hurricane. The two remaining libraries that are closed, Gerritsen Beach and Coney Island, are scheduled to reopen this fall. If you appreciate BPL and all the Library offers, I encourage you to donate to our Support the Branches campaign, which runs through June 30. With your help, we will be able to purchase new books, DVDs and other items for all 60 of our branches, and offer the technology, services and programs Brooklynites need and deserve. Please donate today at https://apps.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/donate. Finally, thanks to everyone who participated in our first annual Bike the Branches fundraiser. It was a wonderful celebration of the reach of the library system and the sense of community our branches engender in every Brooklyn neighborhood. We are extremely grateful for your support! Very truly,
Linda E. Johnson
Thank You Champion Supporters! Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is proud to partner with our Champion Supporters. Champion Supporters generously give BPL a gift of $25,000 or more. These contributions support programs and services that help Brooklynites achieve their goals at every life stage. If you are interested in supporting BPL as a Champion Supporter or would like more information, please contact Dana Elmquist at 718.230.2718 or d.elmquist@brooklynpubliclibrary.org.
Every day, people visit BPL’s libraries to attend workshops, story times and concerts, borrow books, learn computer skills and apply for jobs online. But these critical offerings require financial support. Our goal through Support the Branches, our spring fundraising campaign, is to raise $500,000 to help us continue to serve Brooklynites throughout the borough. Please do your part by donating to BPL today! To make a contribution, visit https://apps.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/donate. Thank you for your support!
Speak Up for BPL! The threat of a 36% budget cut from the city is upon us once again, so we’re asking you to tell your elected officials how important Brooklyn Public Library is to you and your community.

FEATURED STORIES
Red Hook Library Reopens and Welcomes Spaceworks Collaboration In April, Red Hook Library reopened to the community five months after being severely flooded during Hurricane Sandy. The extensive renovations included repairing damaged floors, mechanical equipment, furniture and replacing thousands of books. While the Library—and local community—recovered from Sandy, BPL opened the branch as a Warming Center, and through a Bookmobile distributed books and essentials like water, clothing and charging stations.
Artist’s rendition of Red Hook Library’s reading room and stacks.
Red Hook Library’s reopening was also marked by the exciting news that the branch will undergo an overhaul in 2014. As part of the effort to create a more inspiring and welcome Library, BPL is partnering with Spaceworks, a nonprofit that creates affordable workspaces for local artists. Taking advantage of underutilized space at the branch, BPL will focus on connecting neighborhood artists with creative resources and collaborating to offer arts programming for Library patrons. Keep an eye on our website for regular updates.

Bike the Branches Thank You, Bike Enthusiasts! Hundreds of Brooklynites braved the rain and took to the streets on Saturday, May 11 to Bike the Branches and help raise $20,000 for Brooklyn Public Library. The fundraiser—which promoted awareness of the Library’s importance in the community—included mini tours of Brooklyn and BPL branches, read alouds by local elected officials and other fun programs for all ages. A special appearance was made by actress Debi Mazar (the Cooking Channel’s Extra Virgin), NY1’s Errol Louis and City Council Members Brad Lander and Vincent Gentile, who led story times and read alouds.
The day culminated in a Finish Line Celebration at Central Library with a performance from Brooklyn-based rockers The Skins and prize giveaways including tickets to the Great GoogaMooga and a kid’s BMX bike.
Missed out on the fun? Our annual Support the Branches campaign runs through June 30 so there’s still time to give to BPL and help us provide critical programming and resources within our network of 60 neighborhood libraries.
Thank you to our sponsors Consolidated Edison Company of New York (Con Edison), NYC Department of Transportation, Transportation Alternatives, Bike New York, Citi Bike, Powerade, as well as Brooklyn Boulders, Ride Brooklyn, Bike Ahead, Dixon’s Bike Shop, the Great GoogaMooga and Cycles & Recycles for supporting Bike the Branches.

“I’ve been working at the Library for ten years or so, using the Society, Sciences & Technology division upstairs all through grad school and more recently as an urban sociology professor to grade papers and do research. The Information Commons seems better equipped and more amenable to my type of work. The meeting rooms are great too—I plan to meet with students and collaborators here.”

“I noticed the Information Commons when I walked into the Library this morning. I love it. The meeting rooms are a great idea…I can see them being used for book clubs. Right now, I’ve got my own laptop with me and I’m sending resumes out for federal jobs in Charlotte, NC. I’m moving there soon.”
Nick L.
“I’m done here for the day and now I’m heading to work. I spent some time this morning editing Wikipedia. I’m a frequent user of the Library so I saw the construction. I live close enough that I’ll use this space often.”
