A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

Dream Big This Summer! Every day, people visit Brooklyn Public Library to take part in a wealth of educational and cultural programming and to access our rich collection of books, DVDs and other materials. “Dream Big” is the theme of this year’s Summer Reading program but it could just as aptly be the theme of Brooklyn Public Library itself. Through our extensive resources, we encourage countless Brooklynites to aspire to achieve extraordinary goals. Many new Americans dream of learning English to help them advance their careers and further their educations. In fact, over 45% of Brooklyn residents speak a language other than English at home. The Library is committed to providing all Brooklynites with the tools needed to gain English proficiency. In addition to bilingual family programming and a multilingual center, we offer free ESOL classes and English conversation groups at neighborhood libraries throughout Brooklyn. For more information about these resources, please speak with your local librarian. We also provide invaluable services for people interested in opening small businesses. Aspiring entrepreneurs can visit the Business & Career Library for help arranging one-on-one business counseling sessions with volunteers from SCORE, a nonprofit organization supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Furthermore, over the past eight years, our PowerUP! Business Plan Competition has taught hundreds of people how to write business plans. Since its inception, the contest has awarded over $225,000 in seed capital and has helped launch 32 businesses in the borough. Similarly, the Library encourages seniors to pursue new interests by providing a diverse range of instructive programming. We offer classes and workshops that run the gamut from computer basics and watercolor painting to choral singing and Zumba dancing.

Did You Remember to

Through June 30

Brooklyn Public Library’s 2012 Support Our Shelves campaign is coming to a close. Thank you to everyone who already contributed. Special thanks go to our lead sponsor, AT&T, and corporate sponsors, the Durst Organization and M&T Bank. We still need your help! From now through June 30 you can make a tax-deductible contribution to Support our Shelves and enable the library to remain a vital source of information and empowerment for all Brooklynites. Time is running out so please give today! Donate online at https://bpl.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/donate or visit your local library to donate at an ABC kiosk or speak to a librarian. AT&T is a proud supporter of Brooklyn Public Library.

Perhaps most importantly, we provide all Brooklynites with equal access to our vast collection of materials, empowering them to accomplish a near infinite number of goals, from mastering a foreign language to learning calculus. If the Library has ever helped you broaden your mind and discover new opportunities, then I urge you to pay it forward with a donation to Support Our Shelves, our annual fundraising campaign. With your contribution, we will be able to purchase new books, DVDs and other materials to benefit all 60 libraries. Your generous gift will help ensure that many more Brooklynites will be inspired to dream big and fulfill their potentials. Also, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who voted for Brooklyn Public Library in the Partners in Preservation program. We appreciate your commitment to our cause! Very truly,

Linda E. Johnson

Public school students: You probably received this card at your school. Bring it to your local library with ID to activate, start borrowing books, eBooks, DVDs and CDs, and access online resources exclusively for cardholders. If you are age 12 or under you need a parent or guardian’s signature on the activation form. If you are a student at a non-public school, you can apply for this card at your local library.

Brooklyn Public Library • CALENDAR OF EVENTS • June, July & August 2012

Very truly,

Linda E. Johnson
