Brooklyn Public Library • CALENDAR OF EVENTS • September, October & November 2012
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO
New Reasons to Visit BPL The coming months are filled with really exciting initiatives, openings and exhibitions. Our innovative programs, renovated spaces and improved technology are designed to encourage you to spend lots of time at the Library this autumn. I am very pleased to report that the Park Slope Library will reopen this September. Thank you for your patience throughout the renovation process. We have transformed the interior to accommodate many new spaces and amenities, including a quiet reading room on the mezzanine, a children’s reading room and an adult reading room on the first floor, and a renovated multipurpose room for the public to use for meetings and programs, all while maintaining and restoring the historic elements of this treasured Carnegie library. We are thrilled to be able to welcome the Park Slope community back to their neighborhood library.
Find it Faster! BPL’s New Online Catalog Brooklyn Public Library is set to launch a new online catalog! Expect enhanced searching, easier browsing and quicker, more refined results. Explore the new social sharing functions, which allow users to post reviews and ratings, create tags, and store wish lists and a reading history. Book reviews and comments will soon be shared by library systems across the entire continent, from Vancouver to Brooklyn. And for the first time ever, BPL’s online catalog will include text translated in Spanish, Russian, Chinese and French.
Later this fall, the new Kensington Library (4211 18th Avenue, between Second and Third streets), which replaces the existing building several blocks away, will open to the public. The multilevel, 18,500-square-foot LEED-certified building is BPL’s first “green” library, built to conserve energy. A skylight allows sun to flood the first and second floors of the building, and the library is equipped with many technological enhancements, including new computers, printers, iPads and self-check machines. BPL is also unveiling a faster, more interactive and user-friendly online catalog. You will be able to connect with other readers, share book reviews and keep track of your reading history. The catalog will also feature text translated in Spanish, Chinese, French and Russian. From September 6 through December 1, Central and Brooklyn Heights libraries will showcase the work of an array of local and well-known fashion illustrators in an exhibition entitled “Fashion Illustration: A Contemporary Look.” Panel discussions, a film series, free fashion illustration classes and author events have already been scheduled. For more information, see page 9 or visit the Events Calendar online. Finally, thank you for your incredible support over the past few months. We exceeded our goal for the Support Our Shelves fundraising campaign, and thanks in large part to your advocacy, the majority of our City funding was restored for fiscal year 2013. As a result of your efforts, we will be able to continue to deliver essential services and resources to communities all across the borough.
The new catalog will be accessible via desktop and from mobile devices*. Keep an eye on
catalog.brooklynpubliclibrary.org for up-to-date information.

Brooklyn’s First Green Library Debuts The borough’s first green, eco-friendly library is coming this fall. For the first time in 40 years, Brooklyn Public Library is set to open a newly-built branch this October. The new Kensington Library, which was constructed with sustainable materials and completed using environmentally-friendly finishes, also holds the distinction of earning a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. The multilevel building on 18th Avenue, which replaces the previous location on Ditmas Avenue, houses 18,500 square feet of public space, multipurpose rooms, new computers, iPads and self-check machines. Thanks to its top-lit atrium and wall of windows, it has abundant natural light, and conserves energy with efficient skylights, glazing and heating/cooling systems. Additional features include built-in storybook shelves on the second floor and a children’s reading room on the upper floor equipped with age-specialized furniture, materials and technology.
Now Open: New Lots Learning Center Literacy, ESOL and GED preparation classes are now available for the East New York community. Brooklyn Public Library was pleased to mark the 35th anniversary of its Literacy Program with the July 2 opening of the New Lots Learning Center. The new space is the borough’s first Learning Center to be built in 10 years, and is part of BPL’s commitment to making its libraries welcoming and engaging, educational spaces. The facility opened to address the need for free literacy and adult education services in this community. BPL’s Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs are offered at the New Lots Learning Center, and include GED preparation and ESOL classes. ABE programs annually serve more than 1,800 adults, participating in over 150,000 combined hours of educational instruction.
Be on the lookout for more information as Kensington Library’s opening day nears! Thank you to Con Edison and the National Grid Green Cinderella Grant program for their support.

Thousands of ‘Big Dreamers’ Participate in Summer Reading A season of Summer Reading came to a close on August 31 after successfully providing Brooklyn readers of all ages with programs and book suggestions to encourage the dreamer in all of us! BPL registrations on SummerReading.org more than doubled this year as Brooklynites signed up for a chance to win an iPad and a number of other exciting prizes. The kick-off event on June 7 welcomed hundreds of families on Central Library’s Plaza. The festivities included a visit from Bullseye, the mascot of lead sponsor Target, a reading by special guest Adrienne Bailon (The Cheetah Girls), the Itty Biddies, presentations of Zumbatonic ® and Wildlife Theater, and featured a cozy reading nook designed by Target.
