A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO
A New Vision for Brooklyn Public Library Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is committed to providing the resources our patrons need to be competitive in school, work and life. As part of this commitment, we’ve recently made some exciting changes at BPL. This January, we opened the much-anticipated Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons at Central Library. Featuring seven public meeting rooms (one doubling as a recording studio), a 36-seat training lab, open workspace and innovative technology—including computers running advanced software such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop, GarageBand and Pro Tools, the flexible, technology-rich space is the cornerstone of our efforts to promote digital literacy throughout the borough. We also recently released a strategic plan, outlining our priorities and initiatives for the institution for the years to come. It highlights six main goals for the Library, centered on education, access, culture, inclusion, space and stewardship. For more information about the strategic plan and the many projects and programs we will be launching soon, please visit our website at bklynpubliclibrary.org. You may have also noticed our exciting new brand. The mark is clean, current and reflects a new way of thinking about the Library. Brooklynites have been coming to BPL to begin new journeys, such as opening new businesses, learning English and finding jobs. Our tagline, Start Here, embodies the Library’s role as a place where everyone can begin achieving their goals. As we embark on the next era of service for the Library, our logo will symbolize our renewed commitment to providing the best possible service to the public. And by rolling out our brand across all 60 of our libraries, we will provide a strong visual identity for the institution as a whole, raising awareness of the Library system and its ties to every neighborhood in our borough. As we strive to fulfill the current and anticipated needs of all Brooklynites, we hope you will join us. Please donate today to help us carry out our strategic plans and deliver the twenty-first century services our patrons deserve. You can make your gift online at bklynpubliclibrary.org/support or by calling 718.230.2738. Thank you, as always, for supporting BPL. We look forward to many more years of providing you with modern technology, resources, programs and classes.
Very truly,
Bike the Branches! Join Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) on Saturday, May 11 for Bike the Branches—a fun and adventurous one-day bike ride to benefit the Library. Experience the borough and BPL like never before, while connecting with family and fellow Brooklynites as you ride to and through our network of 60 neighborhood libraries. Sign up to ride as an individual or with friends and cruise through Brooklyn at your own pace. Get your “passport” stamped at as many branches as you can visit to be entered into a drawing to win exciting prizes. Take a tour of Brooklyn’s literary history, culinary highlights or architectural gems on one of our suggested routes, or create your own path to explore the borough and the neighborhood libraries that serve each community. Throughout the day, stop in at select branches to recharge and enjoy entertainment and fun activities, and top off the day at Central Library’s Finish Line Celebration—you won’t want to miss it! Register today to Bike the Branches and support Brooklyn Public Library with a rewarding day of wellness, literacy and community, and ask your friends and family to sponsor your ride for BPL. The first 100 people who register will be entered into a special drawing! Bike the Branches is a part of our annual Support the Branches spring campaign (formerly known as Support our Shelves). All proceeds from Support the Branches and Bike the Branches help BPL provide vital services, programs and resources to every neighborhood in Brooklyn.
