Director ’s MESSAGE

Greetings!

I trust everyone had a great summer at the library. Thanks for spending time with us -- we loved taking you on adventures and showing you a great time. Now get ready to burst into fall as we invite you back for more amazing experiences!

There’s excitement ahead with fall debuting on the autumnal equinox of September 22, along with Banned Books Week (September 22 - 28), an observance begun in 1982 in response to the sudden increase in challenges to books in libraries, schools and bookstores. As you are well aware, this trend has increased. In response, we’ve created Book Sanctuaries in all of our branches where endangered stories are protected and made accessible for exploration or checkout. At Broward County Library, we are passionate on the topic of banned books and will be hosting themed programs all month. Let’s watch

films, discuss books, match famous quotes, do storytimes and crafts for the little ones and compete in word search and trivia. I highly recommend attending Free Access: Libraries and the Bill of Rights to cut through the social media noise about your Constitutional freedoms and the role libraries play in protecting them.

Speaking of rights and freedoms, none is more pivotal than the right and privilege of voting. Learn more at Your Vote, Your Voice: A Guide to Informed Voting and Your Voice, Your Vote & Government 101. Brave men and women in the military and the Civil Rights Movement have given their lives to afford us that right, so let’s embrace it!

We’re up on our feet and dancing as September kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) with a salsa workshop and performances by the Ameyal Mexican Cultural Academy. The fiesta continues with a movie marathon, book discussion, lotería (Mexican Bingo Night), jewelry-making workshops, papel picado (Mexican paper craft) and storytimes.

It’s also time for the adults’ reading circle as my Director’s Book Club reconvenes to discuss The Wager by David Grann. This historical, nonfiction, true crime, #1 New York Times bestseller will keep you enthralled page after page with high seas intrigue and adventure. Pull up a chair and join us.

What really strikes me as I look over the program offerings for September is how the staff strives to make life easier at every juncture. We like to see you surmount challenges, raise capable kids and have fun along the way. No doubt about it -- we’re on a mission for your best life .

Some of the programs we are offering in September for their usefulness factor include U.S. citizenship & naturalization test prep classes, Broward County Property Appraiser outreach, exemption applications, an info session with Veterans Affairs, free courses on eating better on a budget, caregiver support groups and Coffee & Conversation, which brings helpful organizations and agencies into libraries to share their free resources and services.

We care about kids and want to hone their interests with an eye to future careers and life skills they will need as adults. From infancy to the teen years, we are touching base and getting them off to a good start with programs like Kids Club: Math and Literacy Games (ages 6 - 9), Scientist in Residence: Youth Environmental Alliance at the Creation Station Science (teens and adults), Reading with a State Park Ranger (ages 5 -13), and Making Cents: Financial Literacy for Teens workshop series. We also have in-person, free French and Albanian language classes for the kids.

Calling all fun seekers! Are you board game adventurers (ages 8-18), aromatherapy crafters (adults), high-intensity fitness buffs (teens and adults), gentle yogis (teens and adults), open mic creatives (all ages and spectators), wannabe podcasters (teens and adults)? Are you competitive, ready to join the LEGO Contest Club, play bingo for books, strut in the Tea Hat-a-Thon parade? We’re betting on you!

Fun is for everyone, so let’s include Sensory Story Time, which nurtures special needs preschoolers through songs, stories and activities, because being on the spectrum does not mean being out of the library. We accommodate customers of all ages.

DIRECTOR’S BOOK CLUB

Join Broward County Library Director Allison Grubbs in discussing thought-provoking books. Read the book or listen to the audiobook, then get together with Allison to talk about it.

Incidentally, an easy way to discover any program, including those I’ve mentioned, is to visit the Events Calendar, enter a key word in the search box, and select your date range via the calendar icon in the top right corner. Please feel free to ask for a program you’d like to have by talking to your friendly librarian or going to our online Suggestion Box.

Let’s never forget that libraries are joyful, social places. Show up for some fun!

Sincerely,

Allison Grubbs

LIBRARY DIRECTOR

The Wager by David Grann

Disaster struck the British warship HMS Wager in May 1741. Captained by David Cheap, the vessel met its end on a desolate island south of Chile.

Friction arose quickly amongst the crew. While some hoarded provisions for themselves, others faced starvation. This selfish act shattered any semblance of trust, leaving the men bitterly divided.

Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month

Traditionally, libraries were institutions for housing information. Now, libraries use their buildings for more than housing books, media and artifacts. Today, we display, create, invent, act, make music, dance, perform, film -- and in every sense, using every sense -- participate!

Libraries activate their spaces with events that promote conversation, well-being and exploration as new ways of becoming informed. I love being the Programmer at Main Library, where my job for the past four and a half years is to design these activities.

As Main Library Events Coordinator, my job is to provide new and exciting learning opportunities, while maintaining a link to our various cultures. My own Hispanic Heritage is Colombian. My parents are immigrants and my sisters and I are first generation Americans!

I came to Broward County Library with a background in art history and museum education and I invite visitors to the displays around the building and in gallery six, our primary exhibition space. We pride ourselves in reflecting the community through our programs and exhibitions. This Hispanic/LatinX Heritage Month, let us celebrate our humanity along with our ethnicity. Let’s think about what brings us to the library, what brings us together as people, and what comprises our common humanity.

For me, to be human means you are compassionate; it means you are faithful; it means you are spiritual; it means you are ancestral; it means you are infinite; it means you are capable; it means you are a creator; it means you are a dreamer; it means you are loved; it means you are one with nature; it means you are in community; it means you are celebrated; it means you are caring; it means you are intentional; it means you are kind. It means you are welcome accepted and valued at the library.
