We’re in for some exciting March moments celebrating Women’s History Month throughout the library system and the Africana Arts and Humanities Festival at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC).
Come into March like a lion – or lioness - with a Women’s Power film and discussion afternoon at Main Library, examining female leadership, creativity, wisdom and courage through the centuries.
From the dawn of time, women have been recognized as creators and weavers. Ancient Egyptians had a goddess whom they believed wove the world into existence, as did the Sumerians and the Native Americans, whose stories tell of Grandmother Spider. Two programs that speak to the theme are Black Beauty as an Act of Resistance! at the Pompano Beach Library and The History of Weaving and Women, where tweens and teens will create a Circle Woven Craft at the Jan Moran Collier City Learning Library.
As someone who avidly enjoys good stories, I am thrilled that our branches will have book discussions on a variety of titles – some with special guests! Author Lisa See will join the discussion of her novel Lady Tan’s Circle of Women via Zoom at Davie-Cooper City Branch. Novelist Linda Rosen will host Jewelry & the Art of the Story where you will craft a story with

Linda about your jewelry item at the North Regional/Broward College Library. Come meet other creatives and readers!
Speaking of readers, I’d love for you to join me at my Director’s Book Club to talk about The Women by Kristin Hannah. This engaging novel follows a nursing student venturing forth from a sheltered life to enter the Army Nurse Corps and follow a brother departing to serve in Vietnam.
Get your markers out! A big red circle is drawn on my calendar around the dates March 13 to 15. I’ve waited all year to be entertained and enlightened at the second annual 2025 Africana Arts & Humanities Festival. Delve into the art, culture and history of the 1920s and 1930s Harlem Renaissance with an incredible threeday lineup of programs, beginning with a free Nicole Yarling Jazz Concert on Thursday night; the over-21, ticketed Speak Easy Edition of Eat, Drink, Read on Friday night; and four fascinating scholars on Saturday.
I’m going to close by letting you in on a secret: some of the library’s best services are online. Are you are currently using Hoopla? Imagine being able to enjoy audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines or music everywhere you have a screen. You can use your computer, your phone, and even your TV with just your library card! Try Hoopla and tell me how much money you save.
Wishing you a March full of triumphs and new discoveries!
Sincerely,
Allison Grubbs
