Dr. Ramona La Roche (Dr. Rae) African American Research Library and Cultural Center

Greetings!

February is a month of the heart and mind. Library folks are biased, of course, but we have a good feeling all over for National Library Lovers Month and Read to Your Child Day. They are a perfect February paring for Black History Month and Presidents’ Day, as our minds focus on appreciating our heritage.

The Big Read continues, with the emotional and thoughtful novel and NEA Big Read selection To Live by Yu Hua. Check out the eBook or get the audiobook on Hoopla to join us for some great discussions. This riveting work of fiction tells the story of a wealthy landowner’s son and his life in the wake of the Chinese Revolution.

Get ready: We have astonishing back-toback entertainment in a wow weekend with not one but two Broward County Library (BCL) signature programs. Hurry to sign up for the legendary Moonlight Tales: Asian American Stories on Friday night, February 7, and for ArtLit 2025,

ALLISON’S A-LIST

ArtLit 2025 RevealtheBeauty

a related community celebration of art, culture and stories of China, on the following day.

How are you doing with New Year’s resolutions? It’s about this time that our resolve starts to waiver and our willpower starts to wilt. This is especially true when that fancy Valentine’s Day chocolate assortment collides with a pledge to whittle the waistline. Forget the guilt and shame and head to your nearest BCL branch where we keep you motivated and on track for fitness and health year-round. If you have the desire, we have the tools. Hang in there!

If a sleek silhouette is on your list, we have in-person classes on nutrition, and classes with expert fitness instructors to guide you step-by-step with yoga, tai chi, EnerChi, Insanity workouts, Strength and Balance classes, and more. You can also log on to our website 24/7 to access BCL’s Online Resources. You’ll find hundreds of health and fitness eMagazines, and plenty of other related titles. You can also download the latest diet and exercise eBooks and eAudiobooks to your eReader, tablet, smartphone or computer to devise your perfect program.

Wishing you a healthy, successful and fascinating February!

Sincerely,

BOOK CLUB

Join Broward County Library Director Allison Grubbs in discussing thought-provoking books. Read the book or listen to the audiobook, then get together with Allison to talk about it.

My name is Dr. Ramona La Roche, and I serve as a supervisor of adult information services at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) here on Sistrunk Boulevard.

I arrived at Broward County Libraries in August of 2018. I came to the Broward County Library System to work at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center.

My life at AARLCC has been very full and rich. I moved here specifically to work at AARLCC. It’s very interesting to see just how flexible one can be under new leadership as roles and goals change and expand.

I think that Broward County Library has a wonderful way of connecting with all sorts of people. We reach so many pockets of communities, and I like that I’ve gone to some of the other libraries and planned some programs. It’s kind of nice to feel those cultural nuances as you move to different places.

I’m looking forward to continuing to create programs that operate from a global perspective.
