As we embark on 2025, Broward County Libraries is buzzing with exciting initiatives. I encourage you to experience the power of community reading by participating in the Director’s Book Club and the NEA Big Read.

I am thrilled to announce my selections for the 2025 Director’s Book Club:

JANUARY: Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See: Inspired by true events, this novel explores the life of Tan Yunxian, a doctor from 15th-century China who finds her calling at odds with traditional duties of marriage and motherhood. (Fiction)

FEBRUARY: James: A Novel by Percival Everett: An action-packed retelling of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told from the viewpoint of Jim, Huck Finn’s enslaved traveling companion. (Fiction)

MARCH: The Women by Kristin Hannah: When nursing student Frankie McGrath’s brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she leaves her sheltered life, joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. (Fiction)

JULY: Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster by Adam Higginbotham: Based on extensive research, Challenger chronicles the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster and offers a detailed account of the tragedy and investigation afterward. (Non-fiction)

SEPTEMBER: Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe: An in-depth look at the Sackler family and how they made a fortune with the prescription drug Oxycontin while escaping accountability for the public health crisis it caused. (Non-fiction)

OCTOBER: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt: A widow working as a janitor at an aquarium befriends a giant octopus that helps her solve the mystery of her teenage son’s disappearance. (Fiction)

NOVEMBER: These Precious Days by Ann Patchett: In this collection of essays, New York Times bestselling author Ann Patchett reflects on home, family, friendships and writing. (Non-fiction)

The Nian Monster is back to wreak havoc on Shanghai! This fearsome beast, once scared off by loud noises and bright colors, is now immune to traditional New Year’s scares. Can quick-witted Xingling save the day? With the help of age-old traditions like long life noodles and sticky rice cakes, she’ll need to outsmart the Nian and protect her city.
