Director’ s MESSAGE
Greetings!
Right about now a lot of folks, perhaps you, are wondering what to be for Halloween. I love the fun of slipping into another persona, another reality, for a few hours. That must be why I love reading so much, which works the same way. Anything we read about becomes absorbed in our consciousness and whisks us away to another place and time. I like reading on a wide variety of subjects…but I had a favorite thing to read about as a kid that became my costume. Can you guess what my mom dressed me up as? (Read on!)
We also get to play at experiencing other lives when we delve into foreign cultures and become part of those worlds. We love being everybody’s library and delight in all ethnic expression. October 24 is United Nations Day, but year-round at Broward County Library (BCL), we consider our library system as the United Nations of entertainment and enlightenment!
Some of the multi-cultural events we have going on this October include performances by the Peruvian group Marinera en el Mundo Florida; Navrati Beats for Indian music and dance; an “Italian Americans Behind the Lens” cinema series; Mexican folk dance from the Ameyal Mexican Cultural Academy; Afro-Latino music and dance with Positively Africa; and an Andean music concert with Paco Moreno.
Let’s continue culture sharing with language learning. Did you know we offer free weekly language instruction for kids in Albanian? For adults, we’re offering a program on “Three Quick Rules for Learning Any Language” with an international entrepreneur who is fluent in seven languages. Pick from among 30 languages you’d like to learn with one of the library’s free online language resources, Rosetta Stone, and master the language of your choice from anywhere.
Whatever your language, we have books and other materials for you. Discover items in a multitude of languages by going to our catalog and clicking on Advanced Search to get a dropdown list of choices from Afrikaans to Zuni.
The Friends of the Library also have foreign language material available among the book fair items that they sell inexpensively to support library programs which you enjoy every day. If you haven’t already joined your local branch’s Friends group, please do so and become one of the volunteers who are the cornerstone of this library. We are great because of the loyal backing, enthusiasm and efforts of our Friends! We appreciate them greatly and offer special kudos during National Friends of Libraries Week, October 20 to 26.
One of the special things about all our libraries is that they are safe spaces for every child and teen. BCL cares and offers resources in all formats to equip families with a response. We encourage any family contending with bullying to ask a librarian for contact information for agencies and elected officials because this is one problem that should never be ignored. Get started addressing it by joining us for a Bullying Prevention Month movie based on a bestselling book that shows ways to confront bullying.
By interesting coincidence, my Director’s Book Club selection is Mother-Daughter Murder Night by Nina Simon, a thrilling novel about protecting family. The plot of this wild tale takes many turns when a grandmother battling cancer bands together with her daughter and granddaughter to solve a murder. I can’t wait to team up with you as we meet online and in person to delve into this hot New York Times bestseller and Reese’s Book Club pick.
I’ll close by sharing the program that delighted me: Howl-O-Ween: Dog Costume Contest and Family Fur-tastic Event. Promenade your pup in a comfortable, light-weight Halloween costume in an outdoor show at Hollywood Branch. Miss Capri Sun will emcee the event and, best treat of all, you get to meet the adoptable fur babies from local shelters.
Come party all month with us for a high-octane October. We are doing Halloween events for the little ones with scavenger hunts, magicians and storytellers, plus scary movies for adults.
This October, step out of yourself and into a getup that reveals a secret side of you. My childhood Halloween costume, inspired by my reading? A dinosaur!

Meet Megan!
The name selected for the Broward County Library Manatee was submitted by Megan, a 28-year-old Coconut Creek library customer, as a tribute to her late cat and reading buddy of 14 years, Sunny, “as a nice way to remember her.” Megan affectionately recalls, “She was just very naughty, but she was very cute about it.”
No stranger to living with cats or visiting the library, Megan says, “I am a lifelong library customer. I’ve been coming here since I was five years old. That’s when I got a library card because my mom thought that it was important that we kids had our own.” Adding, “It was the first time I ever had to sign my name on anything, and that made me feel very special and grown up.”
Manatee-loving Megan, a graduate student at the University of Florida, is planning a career in land stewardship or wildlife conservation.
“I do think the manatee is a good choice for the card, because they’re the quintessential Florida wildlife,” says Megan.
MEGAN LIBRARY CUSTOMER
Meet Sunny!
In celebration of Library Card Sign-up Month in September, Broward County Library debuted a new card design featuring Sunny, a native Florida manatee with a happy smile and an open book.
Earlier this summer, we asked for your suggestions on what to name our new manatee mascot and received hundreds of responses, from which we chose “Sunny.”
We liked the name Sunny for a variety of reasons, including the manatee’s cheerful expression and the design of our BCL logo, which contains a sun that’s bright yellow and orange, like the book Sunny is reading.
While Sunny will certainly appeal to young readers, the card is available and intended for Broward County Library customers of all ages.
New library customers can select this design at no charge when registering for their first card, and existing library card holders may switch their current card to a Sunny the Manatee card, also at no charge. To switch cards, please bring your valid picture ID to any Broward County Library location.
