Director

Greetings!

Winter is on the way, and with it comes the annual November celebrations of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. First and foremost, these are special times to honor heroes and gather with loved ones, but I hope you find time to drop by and celebrate with us at the library as well. It wouldn’t be a party without you!

Join us for a Veterans Day weekend tribute at Lauderhill Towne Centre Library with a free, live concert of jazz from around the world. Check out this and other holiday events on our calendar as we make some noise in November.

We celebrate the service of our veterans, which has made us a free nation. In recognition of their role as world history makers, BCL is committed to preserving the past with our ongoing Veterans History Project, where vets and their families record and hand down their stories to future generations.

BCL invites veterans to be interviewed via video recording at the Main Library. Gold Star Family members, defined as the immediate family of veterans who died as a result of active service during a period of war, are also welcome to participate in this free project. Completed video recordings will be preserved in BCL’s Special Collections. In addition, recordings may potentially become a part of the Veterans History Project (VHP) of the Library of Congress.

Events Calendar

In honor of the several national holidays this month for novel writing, Authors Day, Indie Author’s Day, Nonfiction Day and I Love to Write Day, we’ll be holding a Local Authors Book Fair at Main Library. This is an opportunity for free workshops on self-publishing, editing, writing and for networking opportunities. More good news for your inner wordsmith: through BCL, you can create, edit, format and generate print-ready and eBook formats for your book at no charge using BiblioBoard. Try your hand -- all great works begin with a first word. And remember to express yourself in another format as well: the voting booth.

Early Voting for the November 5, 2024, General Election takes place from October 21st to November 3rd, and many libraries are polling places and precincts. Please call any Broward County library or the Broward County Supervisor of Elections if you have questions. Your vote is all-powerful, but only if you cast it.

We’ve got a whole lot of how-to for you this month, to sharpen your skills and spice up your life. Get ready to learn screenwriting with a producer, drawing with an artist, cookie decorating with a baker, storytelling for your non-profit with a public relations professional and ghost hunting from a worldfamous paranormal investigator, parapsychologist and demonologist. There’s clearly something for everyone on our Events calendar!

Wishing you a memorable and marvelous November!

Sincerely,

The Sentence by Louise Erdrich DIRECTOR’S BOOK CLUB

Join Broward County Library Director Allison Grubbs in discussing thought-provoking books. Read the book or listen to the audiobook, then get together with Allison to talk about it.

An exploration of life, death and the power of words through a haunted independent bookstore, where a recently deceased customer and a newly hired ex-convict must unravel a year of grief, social unrest, and the mysterious ties between the living and the dead.

One of Broward County Library’s many veterans is former Marine Staff

Sergeant Bill Fritz, who is the Librarian Senior at Hallandale Beach Branch.

Bill spent 21 years as a librarian, retired for two years, and then returned to the library job he thrives on.

“It’s really nice when you get to know your customers so that whenever they come in, they’re looking to see you because you’re part of their day now, and they like conversing with you, catching up on different things,” explains Bill.

“They’ve developed a trust with you, they know that this is their person they can go to when they have questions, and they’re going to get an answer.”

Bill credits eight and a half years spent in the Marines as a naval gunfire spotter, which took him to Denmark, Lebanon, Rome and Japan, for developing the confidence and people skills that made him a success in

life and his library career. “I can’t imagine where I would be today if I hadn’t joined the Marine Corps,” says Bill.

“Working in the library, a lot of times different situations will remind me of things that I had experienced while I was in the Marine Corps, especially when I hear languages that I’m not familiar with,” Bill says. “And it always a good memory because with all those experiences, I learned constantly.”

Bill enjoys uncovering information and interacting

Librarian Bill Fritz spent more than eight years in the U.S. Marines.

Florida, you have so many different cultures,” notes Bill. “But when customers you value them and their culture, and that you’re

same as you would help anybody else, that makes them feel comfortable as well as welcome. We just need to continue to get the message out: That’s
