Treasures Hidden

Greetings!

The holiday season is here! The sight of beautiful decorations and the smell of cinnamon and nutmeg in the air get me in the holiday spirit. For me, it’s time to relax with loved ones and reflect on the past year.

As Broward County Library finishes up our 50th anniversary, I look back on a year filled with celebration, growth and community engagement. Now it’s time to finish out 2024 with a host of festive holiday events.

In the mood for some holiday music? Check out the Broward Women’s chorus on December 12 at the North Regional/Broward College Library.

We also can’t wait to see you at our annual Soulful Christmas event on December 14 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. It’s a full day of celebration with festivities and fun for the entire community.

Don’t miss an amazing holiday train exhibit at the Southwest Regional Library throughout the entire month of December. This fun and interactive experience was created by the Florida Citrus Model Train Society.

While you’re traveling or enjoying yourself

at home, be sure to take advantage of our Hoopla BingePass that gives you seven days of unlimited streaming movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and more. It’s the perfect way to relax and unwind during the holidays. You’ll find passes for Hallmark Movies, The Great Courses, Pokémon and more! A one-week BingePass only counts as one of your eight monthly Hoopla borrows. As always, there’s no commercials and no waiting with Hoopla.

I hope you’ve had the opportunity to visit one or several of our libraries during our anniversary year. If not, there’s no time like the present. Remember, your library is more than just a building. It’s a place to learn, grow, and connect. Whether you’re a bookworm, a tech enthusiast, or a history buff, we have something for you.

From quiet study spaces to engaging programs, we’re committed to providing you with the resources and services you need to thrive. So come visit us, explore our collections, and discover the magic of your local library. Be sure to check out our online calendar to see all we have in store for you.

From all of us at Broward County Libraries, we wish you a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

P.S. Be sure to check out your copy of To Live by Yu Hua for next month’s NEA Big Read. The audiobook is available now on Hoopla.

Sincerely,

DIRECTOR’S BOOK CLUB

Welcome to the Bienes Museum!

We’re in the reading room for the rare book collection and the Broward County Historical Archives at the Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Researchers from all over the world are able to come here, visit us, and look extensively at unique and original materials.

Rare books and archives involve discovering treasures and secrets. You can walk through aisles, pull an item. Touch it. Notice its age. Read the content and see things and feel things that you couldn’t do if you were simply searching online. There are books, objects, photographs and more, where past comes to life.

POP UP BOOK, 1940

This 1961 pop up book by Kubašta is about Hansel and Gretel, and it was printed in Prague. Children are able to open the pages and see surprises. Beautifully engineered illustrations come to life.

TOY COACH (1935-1942)

This little coach was handmade during the Great Depression. Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted the WPA Works Progress Administration Museum Extension Project. This project employed artists all over the country by the government to create models of transportation that were used in schools as educational tools.

THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF SANTA CLAUS, 1902

Everyone knows the story of Santa Claus. But did you know that the author of The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum, wrote a book called The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus? This was a very popular story, illustrated by a woman artist named Mary Cowles Clarke. The cover of this book is what’s called a publisher’s binding in cloth and colors.
