Summer Learning Matters! Summer Learning Matters!
Read and Track your fun from JUNE
The Broward County Library Summer Learning Program encourages children, teens and adults to continue to read over the summer months.
Carve out time for books and magazines that interest you and your family. Reading success in older children, teens and adults is connected to positive feelings about reading when they were younger. Summer learning matters – it inspires a love of reading and helps prevent students from falling behind when it is time to report back to school.
Beanstack online tracking software makes it easy for all ages to earn digital badges and chances to win grand prizes by keeping track of their reading and completing fun activities.

Greetings!
Summer is with us, and we’re here to keep you cool and entertained! You expect a lot from the staff at Broward County Library and have for the past 50 years. Happily, you won’t be disappointed with what’s on our Events calendar for an overthe-top, adventurous summer!
“Adventure Begins at Your Library!” That’s our theme this year and we invite you to do something exciting and try the unknown. What would you like to take on? What’s your pleasure? Sample the world with us and try something novel, from cosmic cupcakes to kimonos.
DIRECTOR’S
One of the great things about libraries is that we are a testing ground for what you can become when you challenge yourself. Best of all, it’s free, ready and waiting. At a library, it costs nothing to meet new people, learn new skills or taste new foods – we’ve got you covered.
I’d like to suggest that you make this your summer of discovery, your season of curiosity, your space to stretch. Let the next 70 days be your interlude of experimentation when you give yourself permission to try different things with us. Allow this to be the summer of surprise yourself!
Another terrific bonus of seeking out adventure at the library is that we are here to be your guides, introducing you to ideas, instructors and materials that you may sample with confidence. Have you always wanted to have a go at tai chi, free, with a reputable teacher? Now is the time.
DIRECTOR’S
Spend the summer with us for a joyful June, July, and August as we get up to all kinds of exploration. There is so much more than I can even begin to describe here. Each month has dozens of enticing programs, but to give you a tiny glimpse of what intrigues me.
Our summer program kicks off with a bang at th Annual Children’s BookFest. Turn up at the Northwest Regional Library on June 1 for festival fun that includes facepainting, virtual reality experiences, crafts and entertainment from Fantasy Theatre Factory, Double Dutch Over 40 Club, Catalina the Clown, Marci Poppins, Mockie Jockie Stilt Dancers, South Florida Cloggers, Coral Springs Charter School marching band and more. What a day!
June is jumping with a Juneteenth concert and multiple celebrations, including our iconic 23rd Blues and Sweet Potato
MESSAGE
Pie Festival at Northwest Branch. To that, add Positively Africa performances, Fushu Daiko Taiko Drummers, the Palm Beach Opera, Improv Jam, concerts with the Senior Moments Band and a sing-along with Max Green. Celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month with a steel pan concert, mini-festival and drumming lessons with Richia Dix. We’ve also got magic shows with the Amazing Mr. A, Brent Gregory and Jimmy C, as well as some other tricks up our sleeves.
In June we are starting classes in American Sign Language – a great life skill to learn for personal or professional enrichment. Learn coding, hiking, aromatherapy, dance, kitten care, steampunk-style crafting and more, with chances to do what you love or, I hope, something completely out of character!
July tickles my sense of fun with a stuffed animal vet clinic, chocolate Olympics, ukelele school and Florida Man trivia. Adventures in August bring a “Tribute to Whitney Houston” concert, terrarium gardens (supplies on us), an online murder mystery, a keyboard/sheet music class at Teen Studio, Android phone and tablet training, role playing in space – so much to absorb, so many memories to make!
The greatest way that I know of to take the mental leaps and flights of imagination is by reading. I agree with author George R.R. Martin who said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . .The man who never reads lives only one.” That said, I invite you to try on a new persona, sample new realities and enter new worlds with me by way of my Director’s Book Club. In June: Burn the Page by Danica Roem; in July: Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver; in August, we take a meeting break and read September’s book, The Wager by David Grann.
Let me close with a word on something that I am very passionate about: your hard-won right to vote. This summer, several libraries are designated polling places for early voting from Saturday, August 10 through Sunday, August 18. Nothing is more important than participating in our democracy, where “use it or lose it” fully applies. Easily check your voter registration status through “My Voter Info” with the Broward County Supervisor of Elections and make yourself heard.
Wishing you an adventurous summer you’ll always remember!
Sincerely,
Allison GrubbsBROWARD COUNTY LIBRARY DIRECTOR
