Convocation

2011

We would like to thank the following organizations for their thoughtful generosity: The Northeastern Ohio Healthcare Foundation for providing funding for this Convocation and White Coat Ceremony;

The Ohio Osteopathic Foundation for providing the white coats; and

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation for providing “humanism in medicine lapel pins.

Dean’s Message Congratulations on becoming a student at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Just getting here is a major accomplishment of which you should be very proud. You were chosen over a large number of other outstanding candidates because we know that you have the potential to be an exceptional osteopathic physician or surgeon. Practicing as a physician is an honor and privilege that few achieve. Today, however, the process of becoming a physician is changing. You will be learning in an exciting atmosphere that requires your participation in many different ways. When I was a medical student, I examined my first patient when I was going into my third year of medical school. In contrast, you will be an active participant in medical care starting in your first quarter of medical school. You will participate in an innovative program that we refer to as “the anatomy immersion.” In this innovative curriculum, you will gain a deep understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy in your first month of medical school. You will use new video technologies in our state-of-the-art anatomy lab that emphasize and demonstrate the clinical application of anatomy. This curriculum has been a tremendous success. You will be well prepared for your early clinical experiences. To maximize these early experiences, soon you will begin learning physical diagnosis on simulated patients in our new and also state-of-the-art Heritage Clinical Assessment and Training Center. Additionally, as a participant in small group learning experiences, you will share information with, and learn from, your colleagues. Your exams will be specially crafted to test your clinical reasoning ability. Basic sciences, once considered by many physicians to be a rite of passage, will be integral in your ability to diagnose and treat disease and will be reinforced throughout your training. Finally, you will be the first class to experience all four years at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, so named in honor of the historic $105 million gift to the college from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. This is the largest gift ever given to any institution of higher education in Ohio. This remarkable award will have a transformational and profound impact on this college’s future, and you will witness the beginning of this transformation as a student then as an alumnus. By the time you graduate, there will be a new extension campus in central Ohio that will train an additional 50 OU-HCOM students. Here in Athens we’ll build a new diabetes clinical training and research center and a neuromuscular research center by 2018. Eventually, there will be new master’s and Ph.D. programs tailored for medical students, new clinical and basic science researchers, many new scholarships, and innovative curricula designed to make OU-HCOM the nation’s leader in primary care medical education and rural health research. While doing all of this, we will expand low cost or free health care to uninsured, underinsured and low-income Ohio residents. We are grateful that you have chosen a profession dedicated to the improvement of human lives. There is no better place to learn the skills you’ll need than at OU-HCOM. I thank you for the privilege of watching you grow into outstanding osteopathic physicians and surgeons. My best wishes for your continued success.

The Phillips Medal of Public Service The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine determined in 1976 that a continuing recognition of the men and women involved in health care, education and public service was long overdue. Therefore, the Phillips Medal was established to be awarded annually. The Phillips Medal of Public Service is named for the late J. Wallace Phillips and Jody Galbreath Phillips, longtime friends of Ohio University. Mr. Phillips was the attorney for John W. Galbreath and Co., Columbus, Ohio. During his distinguished career, he also served as president of the Board of Trustees of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, member of the Board of Trustees at Franklin University and trustee of Vanderbilt University. In addition, he was a past president of the Columbus Rotary Club, a 33rd degree Mason, and a member of The Jockey Club and the Columbus and Ohio bar associations. Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of Ohio University, a member and chairman of the Ohio University Board of Trustees, a member of the college’s advisory board, and past president or board member of such groups as Twig 99 of Children’s Hospital, First Community Church, Junior League, Buckeye Boys Ranch, Childhood League, Columbus Association of the Performing Arts, the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and the Board of Trustees of Doctors Hospital North.

2011 Phillips Medal of Public Service Award Recipients Robert S. Juhasz, D.O. Dr. Juhasz is the medical director at the Cleveland Clinic’s Willoughby Hills Family Health Center. He is an associate clinical professor at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) and an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. For the past five years, Dr. Juhasz has served as the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Board of Trustees liaison to OU-HCOM and has enjoyed being a mentor to many students and residents. In 2006, he was named an honorary alumnus of OU-HCOM. Dr. Juhasz serves on the Board of Trustees for the AOA, and is the chair of the AOA’s Education and Procedure Review Committee III. Dr. Juhasz’s counsel is often sought on issues concerning the implementation of electronic health records; in 2005, he participated in a panel that was interviewed by former President George W. Bush about electronic health records. He has served as a member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Electronic Health Records Workgroup and served as a member of what is now known as the National eHealth Collaborative. Dr. Juhasz graduated from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences-College of Osteopathic Medicine and is a fellow and former board member of the American College of Osteopathic Internists.

Lois M. Nora, M.D., J.D., M.B.A. Dr. Nora joined The Commonwealth Medical College in May 2011, as interim president and dean, serving as both chief executive officer and chief academic officer of the college. She also holds the rank of President Emeritus and Dean of Medicine Emeritus at Northeast Ohio Medical University, formerly known as Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. She is nationally recognized leader in physician workforce issues as well as for her research in gender equity, health professions education and academic medicine. Much of Dr. Nora’s scholarly work is focused on issues where law and medicine intersect in medical education. A board-certified neurologist, Dr. Nora is fellowship trained in electromyography and neuromuscular disease and holds certificates in clinical medical ethics and medical management. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine and has served as the latter organization’s president. Dr. Nora also holds the distinction of being the first female neurologist chosen to be dean of and president of an American medical school.
