OUR PHILOSOPHY

Good campus design supports the mission of the institution. More than a collection of buildings, roads, parking lots and fields, a campus is a place where people live, work, and relate to a context of built and natural environments and social structures. The visual image of the campus also helps to present the institution to the world beyond its boundaries. Campus planning is helpful to schools, hospitals, extended care communities, resorts, government buildings, and other public and private organizations.

Each campus has different needs. BRR has completed a number of campus planning and design projects that each meet the needs and desires of the campus community. Landscape design creates the overall campus setting, unifying buildings, spaces, paths, and landmarks in a clear pattern, and it is imperative to create a welcoming first impression for all visitors.

Brown, Richardson + Rowe completed the landscape design for Sheehan Hall at Worcester State University. This LEED Plus 400 bed residence hall includes a dining facility on the central campus for 500 students. A new plaza between Sheehan Hall and Wayslean Hall provides a welcome gathering space for students along the central pedestrian core of the campus. Members of the university community are now enjoying the spectacular views over Coughlin Athletic Field to the hills of Worcester from the dining hall. The building opened in the fall of 2014.

BRR designed the Smith College main campus entry and the universally accessible President’s Garden. Two new brick and limestone pillars and two walls with limestone panels flank the entry to College Lane. They help guide visitors and students to the Admissions Office, the Lyman Conservatory, the Boathouse and Conference Center overlooking Paradise Pond. After dark, LED fixtures light engraved limestone panels. Curved walls provide seating along Elm Street.

The President’s Happy Chace Garden overlooks Paradise Pond. New walls, paths, additional garden space and a complete regrading have made the garden accessible for all students, faculty and visitors. A new summer house provides seating in a shaded place with lovely views to the garden, the house and the pond. Seat walls and benches provide a variety of places for people to enjoy the space.

UMASS AMHERST NORTH AND ISB CHILLER PLANT UPGRADES

AMHERST, MA

CLIENT: University of Massachusetts at Amherst

COMPLETION: 2018

AWARDS: Honor Award, 2019, Boston Society of Architects

Brown, Richardson + Rowe worked with RMF Engineering and Leers Weinzapfel Architects on the landscape design for the North and ISB Chiller Plants Upgrade at the UMass Amherst campus completed in the fall of 2018. The North and ISB Chiller Plants and new utility routings through the campus affected existing plantings, walkways, parking lots and roadways. BRR completed a tree impact study, developed maintenance guidelines, and performed mitigation with replacement plantings. The design maintained trees in regraded areas with stone retaining walls. BRR also provided a low maintenance, all season color planting design around the new glass walled North Chiller building using tree species consistent with the University’s goals for species diversity. BRR closely coordinated with the UMass Arboretum Committee who had an active role in all phases of the project.

BOSTON COLLEGE GASSON HALL

CHESTNUT HILL, MA

CLIENT: Boston College

COMPLETION: 2011

The view to this fine Maginnis and Walsh English Collegiate Gothic building and the eagle perched on a column in front of it communicate the quality of the school to the first time visitor. Trees frame the entry and façade, windows and tower. The College has restored the building for the Centennial Celebration. Brown, Richardson + Rowe designed two unobtrusive accessible ways to the ground floor that preserve the marvelous stairs, the eagle and the facade. The new walls, railings and planting are appropriate to the style of Gasson Hall.
