The State of your Brownsburg Parks

Dear Reader, As we power through the last part of winter, I hope the 2019 Spring/ Summer edition of The Adventurer gives you something to look forward to as we await the arrival of spring in the parks. In addition to the many recreational programs and special events listed in this guide, your parks department staff continues to oversee a flurry of activities geared toward planning, developing and improving your park system throughout this year. I want to thank the many residents and park users who took the time to provide input during our strategic master planning process last year. Whether you completed an online survey, attended a public meeting or had a parks volunteer request you to complete a survey at one of our events, your feedback proved crucial to helping guide the development of our 2019-2023 Strategic Master Plan. Our staff is eager to dig into this work to address the unmet needs that are important to park users. On the following pages you’ll find information ranging from how you can have a voice in future site planning for two new parks to learning about the vision to link three parks – Arbuckle Acres, the current Tague property and Williams Park – using the proposed White Lick Creek Greenway. We’ve also included a pull-out page of summer activities your family won’t want to miss! I encourage you to stay plugged in to all of our parks and recreation news by following @brownsburgparks on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or checking out our Parks Buzz blog at brownsburgparks.com. On behalf of the Park Board and Brownsburg Parks staff, I thank you for your ongoing support of Brownsburg’s growing park system. Thank you for choosing Brownsburg Parks for your family’s recreational activities!

Travis Tranbarger Parks and Recreation Director

In the future, the classroom will include a sensory playground.

TRAILHEAD PROPERTY

STEPHENS Park 610 Stephens Drive Stephens Park is a four-acre neighborhood park that has one picnic shelter and a playground. Future amenities include pickle ball courts, an expanded play area and restrooms.

300 CR N/900 CR E This 6.67 acre parcel of land is located in the southeast portion of Brownsburg south of CR 300N and just east of CR 900E. This property will be developed in 2019 to provide additional parking for B&O Trail users, a small playground, a shelter and a restroom facility. The majority of the property will feature natural elements that maintain the integrity of the wetlands already on the land.

315 W. MAIN ST PROPERTY The Town of Brownsburg purchased this 51-acre property from the Tague family in June 2018. Located just west of the intersection of Green and Main Streets, the expansive acreage has the potential to house multiuse fields along with a wetlands area. The former family home also could potentially serve as a nature center. The community will assist in future design of the park.

Arbuckle Acres Park 200 N. Green Street Arbuckle Acres Park is the oldest park in Brownsburg. It boasts beautiful mature shade trees on its 54 acres. Amenities include baseball fields, lighted basketball and tennis courts, 1.3 miles of trails, seven shelters, and a playground shielded with a canopy of trees. B&O TRAIL CARDINAL PARK 3432 N CR800 E Parking and a trailhead were completed in 2018. This spring, the Town’s first dog park will be installed on the 14-acre site. When completed in 2020, the park will include a playground, shelter and restroom.

SR 267 across from Frazee Gardens Brownsburg Parks is proud to manage the three-mile stretch of the popular B&O Trail from SR 267 (Green St.) to Ronald Reagan Parkway. The trail is open 5 a.m. to dusk. From the B&O Trail at CR 300 N you can access the Bicentennial Trail, which connects Brownsburg to Avon.

Help Us Determine the Amenities to Include in Our Newest Parks We’ve heard a lot of excitement from residents about the prospect of a new park at the former Tague residence at 315 W. Main. St. Did you know that as a park user, you have a voice in determining which features will be included at the park? Gathering public input is a huge piece of the park site master planning process. (Site planning is a separate task from our recently completed 2019-2023 Strategic Master Planning Process, which established priorities to be completed by Brownsburg Parks over the next five years for the entire park system.) Brownsburg Parks’ staff doesn’t make decisions on park facilities in a bubble; we ask residents and those who visit our parks for input. We gather that feedback through a variety of methods, from online surveys to public meetings. Our goal is to guide the process by sharing data and the best practices in park management to help predict future trends and patterns of use to make sure the site meets both current and future needs.

Using a site master planning process to develop our parks helps us to determine financial needs for startup and maintenance costs and ensures program features (playgrounds, flexible recreational spaces) meet the community’s needs. Planning also helps determine priorities and timelines. Thanks to public feedback, Brownsburg Parks is able to create parks and facilities that reflect the Town’s strong commitment to high-quality recreational opportunities. In 2019, Brownsburg Parks will create site master plans for the Tague property and our West Wynne Farms property, which is located just south of the B&O Trail and east of Green Street adjacent to the Bersot Crossing housing addition. We hope you will participate in the meetings to program these important park facilities. Keep an eye on our website and social media pages for meeting dates and times.

Big improvements are coming to Brownsburg's smallest park Big improvements are coming to Brownsburg’s smallest park. Stephens Park is located at 610 Stephens Drive, not far from the intersection of Tilden Drive and Green Street. Currently, the four-acre space features a shelter, a small playground and a field for a variety of sports. But the park will have a new look soon. The gravel park entrance will be paved and sectioned into 28 parking spaces. Brownsburg Parks will continue to champion green environmental practices by capturing water runoff in a bioswale. This natural feature doesn’t depend on pipes to drain water runoff from the hard surface of the parking lot into sewers. Instead, its sloped sides drain water into vegetation that can absorb the runoff. The plants also can withstand drought, making them low maintenance. One-quarter of the park will feature pickleball courts. One of the fastest-growing sports in America, pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton and ping pong. It’s a great activity for all ages. A year-round restroom will be built nearby. (Those

who want to give the game a try before these courts are constructed can use the tennis courts currently located at Arbuckle Acres Park, which are striped for pickleball.) The current playground will be upgraded and separated into two distinct areas. One area will include play features for children ages 5 to 12 years old, while the adjoining play area will provide sensory play for children 2 to 5 years old. These play elements will help children develop their fine and gross motor skills while stimulating their sense of touch, sight and sound. Along with the playgrounds, a natural playscape will be created on the north side of the park. A playscape provides children with opportunities for unstructured play by using natural elements, such as tree logs or rocks, for climbing and dirt or sand for digging. Finally, visitors can enjoy a stroll around a trail that will encircle the park. Construction is expected to begin in 2020.

Town's First Dog Park Scheduled to Open in 2019 Off-leash dog parks are one of the fastest growing types of parks across the nation, according to the National Recreation and Park Association. That’s why Brownsburg Parks is excited to unveil the town’s first dog park at Cardinal Park in 2019. Based on an estimate by the American Veterinary Medical Association, nearly 4,000 Brownsburg households include dogs. But that isn’t why Brownsburg Parks is building the dog park. The decision was based on the results of two statistically valid surveys completed by residents in 2012 and 2017. The results showed: • When asked to rank the facilities residents felt were most important for Brownsburg, dog parks came in #7 out of 26 options in 2012, and #6 out of 26 options in 2017. • In 2017, 53 percent of respondents were very or somewhat supportive of building a dog park. That was up from 45 percent in 2012.

Every year, Brownsburg Parks staff are approached by park visitors who share concerns about dogs that are allowed to run off-leash by their owners. Providing a safe, enclosed space for dogs to run free can reduce these incidents, making park visits more enjoyable for everyone. We’re also pleased to create another gathering space for community members. Among those we believe will benefit greatly from a dog park are older adults. About 9,400 Brownsburg residents are age 50 or over, and many are pet owners. A dog park offers a great way for people of all ages to leave their homes and meet others with a similar interest. The Park Board will approve the design of the dog park sometime this spring. Keep an eye on our social media sites to find out when we’ll host our ribbon-cutting ceremony at the dog park. And be sure to bring your four-pawed friend with you!

White Lick Creek Greenway Will Connect Brownsburg to AvON Have you ever wondered why there is a greenroofed shelter on Green Street by I-74? It’s because that is a trailhead for the White Lick Creek Greenway. The trailhead marks the start of an almost three-mile segment of greenway between Northfield Drive and Williams Park. Currently, you can walk from Brownsburg’s northern neighborhoods using a trail connection under I-74 on the east side of Green Street to access the trailhead. From there, you can follow the trail to the Walmart parking lot. Brownsburg Parks is currently in the midst of acquiring property to continue the trail around the back side of the businesses in the Northfield Commons Shopping Center. Because much of this property is considered wetlands, the trail will be constructed on an elevated boardwalk. Once complete, trail users will be able to walk, run or bike from the north side of I-74 to Arbuckle Acres Park. The goal is to have the design portion of the trail completed this year.

But the long-term plan for the White Lick Creek Greenway is what’s really exciting! Thanks to the 2018 purchase of the Tague property near the intersection of Main and Green Streets, Brownsburg Parks plans to link three park properties – Arbuckle Acres Park, the Tague property and Williams Park – using the White Lick Creek trail. The projected completion date for this project is 2024. Ultimately, the trail will connect Brownsburg to Avon at US Highway 36. The towns are working together on solutions to complete this project. Brownsburg Parks also is seeking grants to secure additional funding. All of this work ties back to the Town of Brownsburg’s 2008 Greenways Master Plan and the 2014 Brownsburg Active Transportation Plan.
