Climate Brownsville has a humid subtropical climate just outside of a hot semi-arid climate. Yet the nearby waters of the Gulf of Mexico help keep Brownsville cooler during the summer relative to cities further inland such as Laredo and McAllen. History & Heritage Many events that took place in Brownsville have profoundly influenced the development of Texas and the United States The Brownsville Heritage Trail The Brownsville Heritage Trail is a series of trails organized to take you past Brownsville’s most important historic homes and buildings. Each walking tour takes about ten to twenty minutes to complete. Many locations will have official markers with text descriptions, to interpret the significance of these historic sites and events. A good place to begin is the Stillman House Museum or the Historic Brownsville Museum. A second part of the Heritage Trail is a driving tour provided by the Brownsville Historical Association. This guide also provides reference points and direc-
tions to other historical sites and battlefields such as the Palo Alto National Historical Site and the Battle of Palmito Ranch. In addition other attractions such as the hangar of the Commemorative Air Force Museum and Costumes of the Americas can be found in the city.
Palo Alto National Historical Site The course Mexico and United States was forever changed by the opening battles of the Mexican-American War at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma in 1846. At the end of the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and the area where Brownsville is now located was confirmed as being American territory. 8

Travel Itineraries Cont. Battle of Palmito Ranch With the onset of the Civil War, Confederate cotton exports left via neutral Mexico from the Port of Bagdad, at the Mouth of the Rio Grande, to evade the Union blockade. Brownsville traders and intriguers prospered as part of the lifeline of survival for the Confederacy. The last battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Hill Ranch was fought May 13, 1856, five weeks after the Union surrendered at Appomatox. Visiting these
important historical landmarks, will give you a deep understanding of the vast history that Brownsville has to offer.
Historic Brownsville Museum Brownsville has attained a notable record for its adaptive use of old structures that resemble nineteenth century MexicanSpanish Colonial architectural traditions with formal and folk building practices from Texas to forge a unique, Rio Grande Valley architecture style as seen in the reuse of the Southern Pacific Depot, which now serves as the Historic Brownsville Museum.
Stillman House Museum & Heritage Complex Built in 1850 for Henry Miller, the Stillman House Musuem is a brick Greek Revival structure reputedly occupied by Brownsville’s founder Charles Stillman. Additionally , the Heritage Complex next to the Stillman House Museum provides a broad perspective of the history of the areas.
Commemorative Air Force Museum Visit the Commemorative Air Force Museum and take an exciting and educating tour through United States WW-II history. Watch the events unfold, from the preludes to war in Asia and Europe to the fall of the Third Reich 10

South Texas Tropics Nested in the banks of the once mighty Rio Grande, the city offers visitors many ways to enjoy the sunshine with an excellent array of outdoor recreational opportunities. Gladys Porter Zoo
Visit Gladys Porter Zoo and enjoy the lush gardens of this oasis filled with exotic plants and animals from around the world. The animal collection at the zoo was assembled to reflect the diversity of wildlife, with an emphasis on breeding rare and endangered species. Opened in 1971 as one of the first zoos in the country with no barred cages, most animal species are displayed in settings that closely resemble their own natural habitats. Visitors will encounter a diverse ensemble of 337 species of animals and 225 species of plants. The park is divided into four zoo-geographic areas: Africa, Asia, Tropical Americas and Indo-Australia.
Boca Chica Beach Relax in the pristine shores of one of Texas last undeveloped beaches. Bordered by the Brazos Santiago Pass Jetties and the mouth of the Rio Grande River, Boca Chica Beach has no paved streets, hotels or amenities; just beautiful white sand where you can enjoy a day of fishing, surfing or camping. 12
Resaca de la Palma State Park Brownsville’s Resaca de la Palma State Park boasts the largest tract of native habitat in the World Birding Center network. With more than 1,200 acres of trails and local wildlife this beautiful paradise is the perfect location for biking, hiking, and birdwatching.
Sabal Palm Sanctuary For birders and nature-lovers, no visit to South Texas is complete without a stop at the Sabal Palm Audubon Center. The Center is home to many native species of plants and animals that reach the northernmost limit of their Mexican range here and do not occur elsewhere in the U.S.

Always Festive Infused by the culture of two great nations, Brownsville festive ambience, flavorful food and friendly attitude provide a relaxed setting for all. Charro Days, a week-long fiesta, celebrates the long-time friendship between Brownsville and its sister city, Matamoros, Mexico. Charro Days is held the last week of February and features folkloric dancing, mariachis, food and parades. With the concurrent Sombrero Festival and Mr. Amigo Association activities, fiesta-goers have live concerts with popular and Tejano music, a Jalape単o Eating Contest, Grito Contest, Tortilla Toss, local food, dances, and loads of fun. The CAF Air Fiesta brings vintage and military aircraft to the skies over Brownsville in March. A signature event in Brownsville is the annual Latin Jazz Festival in October, which features some of the best regional and national acts. The arts continue to expand their offerings with the help of many Brownsville organizations. The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Arts & Entertainment Season is filled with opera, Latin dance, Russian ballet, stage productions and other classic performances. The UTB-TSC Patron of the Arts Series offers numerous 14
artistic and musical presentations throughout the academic year. The Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts brings special, world-class musical concerts to town throughout the year. One of their more popular events is the annual Guitar Ensemble Festival. The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art stages major events including two international shows in March and April. The Camille Lightner Playhouse presents an ongoing schedule of live productions, about every six weeks, with special youth theatre productions throughout the year. The Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale showcases their talent at a number of performances in Brownsville.

Just across the Rio Grande from Brownsville is a beautiful glimpse into Matamoros, Mexico.
