CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN
by: Kevin S. Putman, Jr. CBCC Chairman of the Board
COLLABORATION lies at the heart of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce, driving progress, prosperity, and resilience within our business community. It promotes growth, innovation, and sustainability, while creating relationships and partnerships that are a necessity for success. Success is not a solo journey, but a collective effort nurtured by collaboration.
One may think of collaboration as simply working together. However, it embodies a partnership where individuals, businesses, and organizations combine their strengths, resources, and expertise to achieve common goals. It fosters creativity and cultivates a sense of community that moves businesses forward.
ABOUT THE COVER…
At the core of every Chamber of Commerce is the belief that, together, businesses can achieve more. It’s a belief rooted in the power of COLLABORATION — the exchange of ideas, the pooling of resources, and the collective pursuit of prosperity.
In the four photographs featured on our cover, we spotlight events that epitomize collaboration with the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce through entrepreneurship, mentorship, and partnership.
Innovation thrives in collaborative environments where ideas converge, collide, and evolve. Whether through strategic partnerships, cross-industry collaborations, or co-created initiatives, we unlock new pathways for innovation that propel our businesses to the forefront of change.
One of the most valuable assets of collaboration is the expansion of networks. By connecting with fellow Members and forging strategic alliances, we broaden our reach, access new markets, and uncover untapped opportunities. Networking through collaboration not only enhances visibility and credibility but also creates long-term relationships that fuel sustainable growth and prosperity.
Businesses can nurture the next generation of leaders, foster a culture of learning, and cultivate an environment where talent
The Central and Lower Bucks Chambers of Commerce allied together to execute the WOMEN IN BUSINESS LEADERSHIP SUMMIT for the second year. The fullday event featured prominent women (and one man) from Bucks County and beyond, sharing inspirational stories and strategies for professional growth. It was a highly successful, thought-provoking day of empowerment and insights from extraordinary leaders in business.
Our popular BUCKS FEVER FESTIVAL, a celebration of the region’s artistic, cultural, and historical heritage, is being presented for the first time in partnership with Peddler’s Village! The Arts and Sculpture Exhibition, Talent Show, and Brown Bag-It concerts, which span over 40 years, have found a beautiful new home in which to showcase talent from Bucks County and beyond. A portion of the Sponsorship proceeds benefits the Chamber’s Charitable Foundation Business Cares a 501 C-3
In partnership with the Central Bucks School District, the two-day BUSINESS SIMULATION event welcomes 60 AP economics and business students from all
flourishes by participating in collaborative projects, mentorship programs, and skillsharing initiatives.
Ultimately, embracing collaboration unlocks infinite possibilities, forges partnerships, and charts a course towards a brighter future together. Our vibrant business community exudes incredible support, camaraderie, and a shared vision for success. I encourage you to utilize the wealth of knowledge and experience that is prominent in our local region. Together, we are stronger, Empowering Businesses and Uniting Communities!

three CBSD high schools to gather with more than a dozen mentors. They manage a simulated for-profit student company, engaging in varied exercises and friendly competition. Students practice the actual operation of their own business for the equivalent of three years (12 quarters) and compete to see which is most profitable.
Lastly, SPARK BOWL, a “Shark Tank”like competition, invites entrepreneurs, innovative businesses, and nonprofit organizations to address social, consumer, and business-oriented challenges in and around Bucks County with problem-solving ideas to support the economic growth and prosperity of our communities. The event is hosted in collaboration with Delaware Valley University’s Small Business & Entrepreneurship Center and Startup Bucks

Friday at noon on the picturesque Village Green through September 13. Likewise, The Art & Sculpture Exhibition and Talent Show, both debuted at Peddler’s Village in June. We had an overwhelming response to each event with a record-number of submissions. It truly was a dynamic showcase of contemporary art, sculpture, and diverse talent. Joining a committee is one of the best ways to take advantage of your Chamber Membership, promote your business, and lend a helping hand to other businesses and neighbors. Committees offer many ways to get involved and work with fellow Chamber Members and the community at large. You’ll see what our Architectural & Environmental Committee, Women In Business Committee, and Young Professionals Committee have all been up to in the past months. From touring Doylestown to educational seminars to fun-filled axe throwing and a backyard bbq, our committees plan diverse events providing plenty of opportunities for engagement. Our Emergency Service Awards Committee had an incredibly successful dinner for 250 people to
honor the First Responders of Bucks County who save lives and property every day. We applaud and thank these heroic individuals for their courage and commitment to our community.
We are also grateful to all of YOU, our Members, for your willingness to always COLLABORATE with our team. We look forward to continuing to build bridges, forge connections, and shape the future of our Chamber and community together.

Featuring Michael Grover of Merck Sharp & Dohme Federal Credit Union
1.) Tell us a briefly about your professional life and who you work for.
I am the Business Development Officer for Merck Sharp & Dohme Federal Credit Union. The Credit Union is the Credit Union for the Pharmaceutical Company Merck as well as hundreds of other local companies and organizations. I am responsible for maintaining and developing relationships with all the businesses and organizations that partner with the Credit Union
2.) What is your favorite thing about the work you do?
My favorite thing about my job is that I can objectively help the employees of large and small companies with their financial wellness. I am a graduate of Central Bucks West and I feel very fortunate to live and work in the community where I grew up. I am also active in the Chamber and other Community organizations and meet many interesting people as well as Community leaders.
3.) What is the worst job you ever had?
I worked construction in college and performed various labor-intensive tasks. This included digging ditches, moving cinderblocks, landscaping, and carpentry.
4.) What’s the best advice you received from your parents?
The best advice I received from my parents was that I should always strive to perform to the best of my abilities. They always instilled that if I always gave 100 percent effort and performed to the best of my abilities the results were a success. It was also important that I never compromise my integrity to obtain better results, honesty was the
most important policy for me from my parents.
5.) What’s your favorite vacation spot?
I love vacationing in the islands but over the past 15years my family has enjoyed cruising. I usually go on a few cruises each year to the Caribbean and am looking forward to starting to visit European cities on cruises. I also enjoy vacationing in North Myrtle beach and Avalon NJ. I also enjoy golf trips with friends and Pinehurst NC was my favorite recent outing.
6.) What new skill would you like to learn?
I would like to learn how to play the guitar. I had lessons when I was younger, but I don’t think I had the patience or musical ability at a young age to become proficient.
7.) When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be the President of a Bank. One of my childhood role models was Milburn Drysdale, the President of Commerce Bank in Beverly Hills CA. I was always impressed, even as a child, how he was always willing to help his demanding customers with their finance and family issues. He was also always willing to go above and beyond his banking duties to help his customers with any of life’s challenging situations.
8.) What book has had a profound impact on you and why?
One of my favorite books is “Who moved my Cheese”. One thing in life that is constant is that things are always changing. The rate of change has increased dramatically as technology and society are moving at the speed of light, business needs to adapt and keep up with a constantly evolving environment. The pandemic was something that no one could have anticipated, and everyone was forced to adapt and change the way they conduct business overnight. It was a catalyst
that forced change and there were many businesses that adapted and are thriving more than they were before the pandemic. I think the book illustrates that change is imminent and that you must embrace change to grow personally and professionally.
9.) What is your pet peeve?
I could have more patience with people that take too long to make decisions and are indecisive. I especially do not like people that take too long to play 18 holes of golf and delay reaching the 19th hole.
10.) What is your favorite music genre? Favorite musical performer?
I was recently on a road trip and found a station that was continuously playing songs I enjoyed, and I asked my wife what the station we were listening to. She said it was the “oldies” station and I was very surprised because I remember the oldies station being Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. I tend to have my sirrus tuned to Classic Rock, now the oldies channel. I always enjoyed listening the guitar playing of Jimi Hendrix and believe that he would be my favorite musical performer.
11.) Who is the one person you would like to meet (dead or alive)?
Benjamin Franklin would be the person I would have liked to have met. He had such a diverse skill set including being a Scientist, Inventor, Writer, Political philosopher, Statesman, I believe that he was one of the most interesting and accomplished people in Philadelphia history.
12.) What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
When I was younger, I was the owner of a local family business. The business imported and manufactured decorative floral accessories that were sold in major grocery stores from Delaware to New England.

JAMES A. MICHENER ART MUSEUM
Welcomes New Executive Director
The James A. Michener Art Museum is pleased to announce that its board of trustees has selected a dynamic new executive director, Anne Corso, to lead the museum into its next exciting chapter of growth.
An educator, museum professional, and arts leader with several decades of leadership experience, Corso comes to the Michener after having served as the executive director of Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester for the past five years.
“We are thrilled to welcome Anne Corso to the Michener Art Museum,” said Bob Byers, chair of the Michener’s board of trustees. “With her past success at other art museums, we are confident she is the right leader to strengthen community ties and build upon the strong foundation of this institution, which was created to celebrate the artistic tradition in Bucks County.”
An innovative and visionary leader, Corso has helped museums develop into vibrant cultural spaces that resonate with and enrich their local communities. As the executive director of Southern Vermont Arts Center, Corso led the transformation of the multi-disciplinary organization into an active, engaging institution that now is a cultural hub of the community and the leading arts institution in Vermont.
“I am elated to join the incredible team at the Michener Art Museum with its talented staff, dedicated board, and deep connections to the Bucks County community,” said Corso. “I have been privileged to make my career in art museums and art institutions that bring people and art together, often in new and exciting ways. I am honored to be able to continue and expand on that
trajectory with all the dedicated partners of the Michener. Together, we will work to develop a bright path forward while honoring the museum’s legacy and looking to its future.”
During her tenure at Southern Vermont Arts Center, Corso doubled the institution’s membership and annual fund, grew the education programs fivefold, and spearheaded millions of dollars in capital improvements that included launching a destination restaurant in its historic mansion, renovating its museum galleries, and implementing numerous critical infrastructure projects.
She also spearheaded the center’s long-range planning process, established a grants program that included securing funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, oversaw the creation of nationally and internally relevant exhibitions such as “The Red Dress” and “Ashley Bryan: The Spirit of Joy,” and developed an extensive network of community partnerships within the region. With Corso’s sound fiscal management and nimble fundraising, the center thrived during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to that, Corso served as the director of education at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. As part of the museum’s leadership team, she oversaw the education department, the museum’s Perry Glass Studio, and the Jean Outland Chrysler Library. Under her leadership, the education department garnered national recognition for the museum’s programming and partnerships with underserved communities, led a reinterpretation effort in the museum’s major renovation and reinstallation, and created and secured funding for the Wonder Studio, the museum’s first interactive gallery for families. Corso also has held leadership positions at the Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pennsylvania, and the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, Delaware.
The arts have been Corso’s profession for 20 years. In addition to her museum career, she has worked in a private art gallery, a regional art center, and a contemporary art center. She holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from Rosemont College in Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in museum education from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She completed the Executive Education Program for Museum Leaders at the Museum Leadership Institute. Corso was honored as a Woman of Distinction in the arts category from the YWCA of Hampton Roads in 2017 for her commitment to community engagement. In Vermont, Corso served as the president of the board of the Manchester Business Association.
The James A. Michener Art Museum collects, preserves, interprets, and exhibits art, primarily American art, and promotes the Delaware River Valley region’s rich artistic and cultural heritage, with a particular focus on Bucks County. The museum presents exhibitions that explore a variety of artistic expressions and offers diverse educational programs that develop a lifelong involvement in the arts. Grant from Art Bridges Foundation allows Bucks County museum to offer free admission second Sundays and extended hours on first Thursdays
Guests will be able to visit the James A. Michener Art Museum for free on the second Sunday of each month and enjoy extended hours on the first Thursday of the month thanks to grant funding from the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.
MICHENER ART MUSEUM Hosts Retrospective of the Work of Bucks County Sculptor George Anthonisen
‘Meditations on the Human Condition’ celebrates the arc of Anthonisen’s 65-year artistic career
The James A. Michener Art Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition celebrating the work of figurative sculptor George Anthonisen, whose 65-year artistic career creates visual dialogues between the past and the present. “George R. Anthonisen: Meditations on the Human Condition” opened April 20, 2024, and runs through October 13, 2024.
Perfect for a spring visit, George R. Anthonisen: Meditations on the Human Condition features more than 40 bronze sculptures, maquettes, and frescoes on view both in the galleries and the museum’s outdoor garden sculpture. Well-versed in history and current events, Anthonisen creates sculptures that investigate the human condition and people’s capacity to destroy, create, question, and make noble choices (and some that are not-so-noble). Working primarily in bronze, Anthonisen is known for his thoughtful and sometimes haunting content and for championing the elegance and strength of the female form. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue that recognizes the sculptor’s significant career and presence in the regional arts community.
Lisa Tremper Hanover, a past executive director of the museum, is the guest curator of the exhibition. On July 10, the Michener will host a Curator Conversation between Anthonisen and Hanover in which they discuss the themes and ideas Anthonisen has explored over the course of his prolific career.
“We are thrilled to feature George’s thought-provoking work in our new exhibition,” said Anne Corso, Executive Director of Michener Art Museum.
“For decades, George’s sculptures have
encouraged us to contemplate the essence of the human being in a changing world, and we look forward to sharing his expansive work with our visitors. He is an excellent example of the kind of artist we aim to highlight at the Michener: A Bucks County artist whose work explores universal themes and has global impact.”
Anthonisen’s career highlights include service as sculptor in residence at the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, and exhibitions at Dartmouth College, the National Academy of Design, the Woodmere Art Museum, the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, Yale University, and the James A. Michener Art Museum. In the 1970s, Anthonisen won a national competition to execute a sculpture of Senator Ernest Gruening for the United States Capitol and Ursinus College commissioned a monumental World War II diptych from the artist. His sculpture, Death and Starvation, was installed at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland in 1985.
Born in Boston in 1936, Anthonisen spent his early years in Vermont, and he was tutored by Elizabeth Calrk Gunther, a landscape architect and daughter of the Director of the American Academy in Rome. Her husband, John F. Gunther, was an architect and painter. It was during this time that young Anthonisen was introduced to the world of art.
In 1955, while stationed in Europe with the U.S. Army, Anthonisen visited the Louvre for the first time where he saw iconic sculptures like the Nike of Samothrace (Winged Victory), Venus de Milo, and Michelangelo’s Two Slaves, which left indelible impressions on him. After military service, he studied at the University of Vermont. He moved to New York in 1961 to master traditional art skills at the National Academy of Design and later at the Art Students League. Anthonisen returned
to New Hampshire in 1967 to attend Dartmouth College of Medical School where he studied human anatomy and he has lived and worked in Solebury, Bucks County since 1971.
Michener Art Museum in Doylestown is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting the art and cultural heritage of the Bucks County region. Home to the largest public collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings, the Michener is named for Doylestown’s most famous son James A. Michener, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who first dreamed of a regional art museum in the early 1960s. The Museum was originally home to the 19th-century Bucks County Prison and is surrounded by the historic stone prison walls which are part of the Patricia D. Pfundt Sculpture Garden, terraces, and a landscaped courtyard. The Museum features nationally touring special exhibitions, work from regional artists in distinctive galleries, and the quiet and serene Nakashima Reading Room.

The Bucks County Women’s Journal seeks to educate and inform women and their families in meaningful ways. We challenge our contributors to demonstrate their expertise, insight, and enthusiasm for their professions and businesses by writing objective and educational articles.
Our publication format allows readers to gain an understanding of “who” the contributor is prior to making the first phone call. This is paramount to businesses that rely on the “personal touch.” In addition to our readers being able to make educated and informed choices, our contributors benefit by having access to a savvy and discerning readership – the dynamic women of Bucks County.
ID THEFT AND MITIGATION OF RISK
With the widespread acceptance of the remote work environment, identity theft has become a greater concern than perhaps ever before. In spite of heightened levels of awareness and implementation of improved technologies aimed at prevention and protection, identity theft continues to increase at an alarming rate, putting both employees and employers at significant risk.
The issue has become serious enough that many employers are including an identity theft protection program in their employee benefit package. A quality ID protection program will include credit monitoring and credit change notifications, unauthorized account access alerts, compromised password warnings and communication regarding address changes, fund transfers, public record alerts and more.
The following represent some of the more commonly utilized methods whereby criminals seek to gain access to an individual’s personal information and what someone can do to mitigate the risk:
• Lost Wallet or Purse: Logins, passwords, Social Security cards and excess credit cards should not be kept in a wallet or purse. Copies of the front and back of all credit cards should be made and card issuers should be called as soon as possible after a loss.
• Mailbox Theft: Secure mailbox, pick up mail promptly and sign up for USPS Informed Delivery which will provide an email containing images of the i items that should be delivered so the recipient will know if anything is missing.
• Through Public Wi-Fi: Avoid using public Wi-Fi for anything where personal information may be used, like for shopping, banking, or other sensitive transactions. VPNs (virtual private networks) can create a secure connection.
• Database breaches: Assume that personal data has already been accessed and take appropriate precautions. Monitor credit scores and reports routinely, watch for unexpected changes, and read financial and insurance statements carefully.
• Phishing: Don’t give out personal data in response to an email or call but instead look up contact information from a trusted source, such as the institution’s website to verify the legitimacy of the call or email.
• Gas Pump Skimming: Use credit cards with chip protection or pay inside the station to decrease risk. Detect fraudulent activity early by setting email or text alerts that let you know when your credit cards are used. If a card is used without your authorization, call the issuer immediately.
• Phone Scams: Be alert for scams… don’t give personal information to callers over the phone. Most legitimate institutions will not ask for personal information on the phone.
• Eying Code/Pin Entry: To avoid having someone watch you enter a password or pin, be aware of surroundings and block others from seeing sensitive data. Don’t leave information where others can view or access it.
• Malware: Caution should be used when visiting websites, and before clicking on attachments or links in emails. Use of a password manager is a good idea.

USING WORK-CULTURE BENEFITS TO PRODUCE POSITIVE RESULTS
In the fast paced and dynamic professional landscape we find ourselves in today, work culture plays a pivotal role in shaping an employee’s experience, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. A positive work culture encompasses various aspects that contribute to a supportive, collaborative, and engaging environment in the workplace.
By creating a positive work culture, business owners and company leaders can foster an environment where employees feel valued, recognized, and appreciated. When employees see their contributions acknowledged and are encouraged to voice their opinions, they tend to derive a higher sense of job satisfaction. A workplace that respects diverse perspectives and empowers individuals to take ownership of their tasks can significantly boost morale and engagement.
A healthy work culture also emphasizes the importance of a work/life balance. Employers that prioritize flexible work hours, remote work options and policies that encourage employees to disconnect from work outside of business hours can create an atmosphere where employees can better manage their personal and professional commitments. This, in turn, leads to reduced burnout, improved mental health, and increased levels of productivity.
Finally, successful businesses understand that collaboration is the cornerstone of a positive work culture. When teamwork is encouraged and nurtured, employees are more likely to share knowledge, support one another, and collectively achieve goals. A collaborative environment not only enhances the quality of work but also contributes to a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among employees
