UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF GAP PLANS

In the complex landscape that exists within healthcare, individuals often encounter unforeseen expenses that can put a substantial strain on their financial well-being. To help their workers better prepare for these situations, employers can install GAP health insurance options as a valuable component of their employee benefit package.

As its name implies, GAP plans can help fill the gaps left by traditional health insurance plans. While traditional plans typically cover a portion of medical expenses, individuals are often responsible for deductibles, copayments, and other out-of-pocket costs. GAP insurance steps in to alleviate this financial burden by providing additional coverage for expenses not fully covered by primary health insurance. Typically purchased alongside high deductible health plans (HDHPs), GAP policies allow

individuals to receive coverage on medical expenses before their deductible has been met. For many individuals with these high deductible plans, paying a small monthly premium for GAP insurance can potentially lead to significantly lower medical expenses.

To understand how GAP health insurance operates, it may be helpful to consider a scenario where an individual has been hospitalized due to a medical emergency. Their primary insurance covers a majority of eligible expenses, but leaves roughly 20% of total costs, which includes deductibles and copayments, as out-ofpocket expenses. By having GAP insurance plans in place, some if not all of the outof-pocket costs could be covered, reducing the individual’s financial liability.

As healthcare costs continue to rise, an investment in GAP health insurance can provide invaluable security and peace

of mind, ensuring that individuals are adequately protected against unforeseen medical expenses. However, although very beneficial to supplement an existing comprehensive medical program, it is important to realize that GAP plans do not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and as such should not be used as the sole source of medical coverage for an individual.

The Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce offers its members access to My Benefit Advisor as a solution for employee benefits, including voluntary offerings. For more information about My Benefit Advisor, visit our website at cbcc.mybenefitadvisor.com or contact Christopher Sloane at (610) 684-6933.

STRUGGLING TO CLOSE THE GENERATION GAP IN YOUR OFFICE?

True story. Over the holiday weekend, my father-inlaw was trying to create a Zoom account for a meeting with a new networking group he recently joined. After a few stops and starts (mainly stops), he was in. Of course, I couldn’t help but listen; I was invested.

Everyone started by introducing themselves, what they currently do, and possible career changes they were contemplating. As I was listening, I knew what was going through his head: “Who are these people?”, “I was a partner at a global consulting firm!”, “What can I possibly learn from them?” Well, how to use Zoom as a start…

But there’s more to learn from these new perspectives than just Zoom.

If you haven’t heard of Professor Megan Gerhardt, you need to. In her book, “Gentellignce: The Revolutionary Approach To Leading A Intergenerational Workforce,” she talks about rejecting stereotypes we assign to generations, accepting their differences, and embracing the value each one brings. When we look at potentially five generations in the workplace, they are more diverse than ever before.

Who makes up these generations?

The Silent Generation (1928-1945)

Respect for authority and hard work. Most have since retired.

The Baby Boomers (1946-1964) Fiercely loyal. They prefer traditional workplaces that value structure and rules. They may be planning to retire, stay in the workforce, or start something new. Remember my father-in-law?

Generation X (1965-1980). Talking ’bout my generation. Technology was new, and we learned the hard way that work-life balance is needed, especially for first latch-key kids. (Me) Ta

Millennials (1981-1996): Having grown up with technology, they are comfortable with digital tools and expect their workplaces to be up-to-date with the latest technology. They look for jobs that provide a sense of purpose and align with their values. You might also observe a sense of entitlement here.

Generation Z (1997-2010), also known as Zoomers, is more forward-thinking and probably the most progressive generation. However, they also have increased screen time, which may hinder building strong relationships. (I have two daughters in this category: one is a recent college graduate (through the pandemic), and another is a sophomore in high school.) They communicate mostly in acronyms and the thought of actually making a phone call? Well…

Here are a few strategies for managing a multigenerational workforce:

Challenge Stereotypes: We’re all guilty of this. It’s important to recognize and challenge our own biases and to value the experiences, opinions, and ideas of others, even when they differ from ours. This is how we build trust and foster an open-minded work environment.

Set clear expectations: Everyone operates differently. To ensure everyone is in alignment, clearly outline job roles and responsibilities and emphasize how they contribute to the overall goal.

Recognize communication styles: From my experience, this can be the most challenging for managers. Younger generations prefer text, team tools, and voice memos, while older employees might favor face-to-face or phone calls. Understand your employee’s preferred medium and use multiple communication platforms to cater to different preferences.

Provide flexible work options: Offer flexible work arrangements such as remote work, flexible hours, and part-time options. Generations may have different needs, such as childcare for younger workers or phased retirement for older employees. Ensure that flexible policies are clearly communicated and available to all employees.

Promote knowledge sharing and mentoring: Each generation brings experiences, preferences, and skills to the team. Create mentoring programs (like mine and my father-in-law’s) where older employees can share their expertise and institutional knowledge while younger employees can provide insights into new technologies and more modern approaches.

Managing a multigenerational workforce can be challenging but also highly rewarding. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, but understanding and respecting differences is critical. Bringing together diverse perspectives, skills, and experiences where everyone can learn from each other’s success? That is a win-win.

BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP by: Scott R. Little, VP, Harleysville Bank

Are you aware that your small business may need to file Beneficial Ownership reporting information with the U.S. Department of Treasury by January 2025? Starting January 1, 2024, the Reporting Rule went into effect for the Corporate Transparency Act. Congress passed legislation in 2021 to make it harder for bad actors to hide or benefit from their ill-gotten gains through shell companies or other opaque ownership structures. Failure to file by the deadline could result in fines and penalties.

If your company has fewer than 20 employees and it’s not on the exempt list, you will need to file. The government requires information on two categories of individuals involved with each business, Beneficial Owners and Company Applicants. A Beneficial Owner is an individual who owns or controls 25% or more of a company or has substantial control over a company. For firms with absentee owners with a manager making

business decisions, that manager information will need to be included.

A Company Applicant is an individual who directly files or is primarily responsible for the filing of the document that creates or registers the company, such as an attorney or accountant registering a company, and they will need to include their information. A Company Applicant is only needed for entities filed in 2024 and beyond.

An initial visit to the website makes it seem daunting to register, but a business owner I know said it took her fewer than five minutes to register her single member Limited Liability Company on the website. She added that one helpful tip before going online to file is to have a digital copy of your Driver’s License or Passport on your computer because it is required to upload to the site. The Beneficial Ownership registration only needs to be completed once unless there are significant changes to your business ownership and management structure.

There is a lawsuit pending in the Northern District of Alabama brought about by the

National Small Business Association (NSBA) which ruled the law unconstitutional. While this is being litigated all businesses not in the NSBA are still required to register by December 31, 2024.

To file the new report prior to the year-end deadline, business owners will need to visit the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FINCEN) website and choose the link “file a BOIR.” At the bottom of this article is the link to support “How to Report Beneficial Ownership Information” along with a link to the guide “BOI Small Business Compliance Guide.”
