The Road Ahead for Asia

HT MintAsia Leadership Summit, Singapore Reputed Regional leaders present ideas and discuss issues of relevance to Asia and the world

H

T Media hosted the inaugural edition of ‘HT – MintAsia Leadership Summit’ in Singapore on April 13, 2018. The Summit, an extension of the highly successful Hindustan Times Leadership Summit that HT Media hosts in New Delhi since 15 years, marked the first time that such an event was held by an Indian company abroad. The theme for the one-day Summit, ‘The Road Ahead for Asia’ aimed to provide a platform for exchange of ideas between leaders of Singapore, the ASEAN region, India and other

countries. Reputed leaders from varied fields presented ideas and discussed issues relevant to Asia and the world to a packed house comprising a, by-invitation, audience of senior political and business leaders, diplomats, academia, analysts and commentators and public affairs professionals. Informal discussions continued over lunch that was specially curated by the globally renowned Chef Manish Mehrotra of ‘Indian Accent.’ Speaking at the Summit, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy PM,

Singapore, stressed the need for Asian nations to play a vital role to combat protectionism in the latest trade friction between the US and China. He said Asia must focus on investing in human capital and technology to create jobs and consistently strive to interact, learn and look outward at the global market. “There is an imbalance in many parts of Asia. There is too much regulation and protection and not enough investment in human capital and education at the most basic levels, tertiary levels, skill development and in healthcare,” he said. In discussion with Hindustan Times editor, R. Sukumar, Tharman also underscored

the need to create more winners in Asian economies, sharply focus on globalization and technological changes, and the need for each economy to calibrate for capital flows. Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh, said he aims to build the state capital – Amravati – bigger and better than Singapore and into India’s best capital. Naidu acknowledged Singapore’s role in making the new city hightech and world class. “We are benchmarking and I’m confident that we will build the best capital in India,” he said. By 2029, the final phase of the project is expected to 2018 july

leadership summit be completed with technology firms already operating in the city. Tata Sons Chairman, N. Chandrasekaran, said the conglomerate was focusing on “simplification, synergy and scale” that may eventually lead to the creation of 32 holding companies. The group is consolidating its businesses across aerospace and defense verticals, expanding the capacity of Tata Steel, also setting up a JV with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp, and cleaning up balance sheets of some businesses. “Our biggest strength is our brands. Every company has its own verticals… We are trying to see how we can bring all these together,” he said. We have to create a nation that is willing to deal with the world outside.” Panelist, Jyotiraditya Scindia, MP, INC, s t r e s s e d o n sustainable growth as a major challenge India would face in the next decade. He also called for a robust foreign policy based on international relations “where you made nations believe that their progress was part of our goal.” Pavan Varma, National General Secretary of the JD (United), said India already exercises global influence and the challenge in the next 10 years would be to determine how to promote not just sustainable economic growth but also social justice. In his session, iconic

He also suggested improving ODIs by having four quarters, with teams alternating innings, a move that could render redundant the toss advantage and the dew factor. “Most changes in the game, such as better bats and

After the UK’s Brexit vote in 2016, and two decades after his landslide general election win, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has returned to reshape the centre of British politics. In his session, Blair said Brexit brought him back and he strongly believed it would do much damage to the UK’s economy and politics. “Brexit and Trump are a result of mainstream centrist parties that have failed because they are afraid to speak uncomfortable truths to the public. He said, he wanted to

reinvigorate a “progressive and pragmatic centre” in UK politics “that has been vanquished with disastrous consequences like Brexit.” Blair wishes to shape the future of UK and EU with a focus on finding solutions to complex issues such as immigration and job losses that led to Brexit. He envisions the new centre addressing the cause of “millions of disenfranchised people right down at the bottom of the heap who are getting excluded from society’s mainstream.” Although he opposed it, Blair believes Brexit will happen, adding that he will “continue to do what I can to oppose it.” In his session with eminent

historian Wang Gungwu, former Foreign Secretary of India, S . Jaishankar hoped that China and India would come together but cautioned that it wouldn’t be easy. He said although both countries had commonalities, the two economic giants had not been able to reconcile their ambitions, values, and interests adequately. Jaishankar said it was important for larger countries, even as they competed, to find some common grounds and set rules. Professor Gungwu felt that South-East Asia countries could play a big role in enabling China and India to rebuild their relationship and bring the region to a new order. “…That sense of responsibility must grow within the region… countries in SouthEast Asia must… play that big role in enabling India and China to rebuild a relationship that is modern, progressive and future-oriented.” Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister, Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, 2018 july

leadership summit River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, India, said that finding a solution to water woes in large parts of India was a big priority. He added that the Indian government had a plan to double the income of farmers by 2022 which could not be achieved without water management. “River connectivity is a challenge for me. I am even ready to offer them (investors) hydropower by which they can give make profit,” he said. The minister stressed, however, that in areas like land transport and shipping, there was no dearth of required funding. “In our ministry, I don’t have any problem in terms of fund resources. We have monetized nine projects for national highways and we are expecting `6,000 crores from that.” Panelists of the “Opportunities in the Emerging Business Ecosystems” session, believe that succeeding in the emerging business ecosystem would depend not just on who had the latest technology,

but on the ability of companies and players to collaborate with each other to reach their target market. Arthur Lang, CEO, International at SingTel, said that the business ecosystem was emerging in such a way that everyone would become part of a much bigger thing. He added, “No one really controls it, but everyone is coming together with one common objective, and that is to provide what the customer wants. It’s really about finding what the customers want and what the customer wants sometimes can be many different things.” Brad Loiselle, Founder, President and CEO of education technology start-up, BetterU, said that collaboration cannot be done by just one institution. BetterU has built an ecosystem that brought together global education leaders on a platform where they were not competitors but represented their brands. Robert Yap, Executive Chairman of logistics firm, YCH Group, said

collaboration and innovation are key to success in the current business space. While technology was one factor that propelled his company to growth, “innovation is key for survival.” Actor-Producer, Aamir Khan said his formula of success was to take messaging in its pure form and make it creatively interesting. “Whether it’s individual or political, I want us to look inward. To not point fingers and find a villain. Let’s find an answer instead,” he said. Khan’s movies have found resonance in neighboring China. He attributed his growing popularity there to “the openness of Chinese audience to stories and characters rooted overseas.” He added that, “the success of my movies reveals that the

emotional keys that unlock Chinese hearts and minds are very similar to those that strike a chord in Indians.” Speaking on, “Insight: The DNA of Success”, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Founder of Isha Foundation said: “Insight essentially means being able to see things other people are not able to see. This is the hallmark of leadership. If it is combined with inspiration and integrity, success is guaranteed for both individual and society.” He added, “Integrity is about pursuing bigger goals that are beyond your personal success. If people see you only for yourself, they will not trust you. And, withMrs. Bhartia & Sadhguru

out trust, no growth and success are possible.” Highlighting the third critical ingredient of success, he said: “If everybody around you can be made to do the best they can do, that is an inspiration.” The Summit was highly appreciated by speakers and guests. An e-mail from one of the guests encapsulates the feedback of many of the guests: “Thanks for the invite for the above summit… It was one of the best conferences I have attended in recent times in Singapore – it stuck to its agenda faithfully, had an excellent line up of speakers and what was to be lauded was the strict adherence to time schedules – which is rare in India related conferences. Well done and congratulations on a great summit.” We celebrated the success of the conference with cocktails and dinner. 2018 july

The Journey of a Newspaper The unsung, behind the scene, heroes who relentlessly work through the night to ensure that newspapers are delivered on time. They are the (K)Night Riders!

T

he journey of a newspaper, after journalists have filed their stories, cleared by copy editors, and sent for the printing of the edition after which it travels through the meandering, remote, widely-spread destinations across several states to make it to your doorstep at the crack of dawn, is an amazing one. What you read has gone through manifold steps. We bring to you a snapshot of what happens in the life of a newspaper after, it has, in editorial parlance, “been put to bed.” By then, most of us are comfortably ensconced in our beds, asleep. That’s

10

JULY 2018

when a disciplined force of people is awake and working, right through the night and until sunrise to ensure that we get our daily newsfeed on time, accompanied with our favourite beverage. Pan-India, HT Media has 28 printing press, including franchisees. For illustration, however, let’s take Delhi/NCR circle. HT Media has 2 printing presses in Noida and Greater Noida that print The Hindustan Times (HT) Hindi Hindustan (HH) and Mint. Printing 3 newspapers with several editions is a mammoth task, particularly given the paucity of time, the various complex steps and

operations involved and the distance papers must travel before reaching their final destinations. The Noida press prints HH editions for Noida, Ghaziabad and trans-Hindon, The Greater Noida press handles a more complex operation and prints HT and Mint editions for Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Western UP, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Haryana and Gwalior, in addition to supplements and special insertions, that need to, not just get off the press but, be ready for transportation within a few hours for timely delivery. Printing schedules are meticulously planned and editions carefully

Printing newspapers with several editions is a mammoth task, particularly given the paucity of time separated and compiled to reach their right destinations. The Chandigarh edition must reach Chandigarh! What good would it be for a reader in Gwalior? Materials, comprising news, articles, advertisements and supplements of HT, HH and Mint, are received at printing presses at different times and printed according to a carefully crafted time schedule, right up to minutes. Any delay in receiving one edition to be printed can derail the entire process and cause spiralling hiccups right up the supply chain. The newspaper business is very time-sensitive. The final product has an extremely short shelf life that has been further shortened by the fact that people receive their news through various sources and on the go,

including via phones, television, Radio and online. Additionally, most households, particularly in urban areas, have both spouses working, so mornings are rushed. Within this short span of precious hours, the newspaper must be delivered punctually with some time to spare for them to read it. Delays as little

as 10 minutes can upset the consumer’s schedule and deny them time to read HT. This has a percolating negative, wasted impact on the effort of all, including the editorial team and the supply chain that handles the last leg delivery. At best, readers carry the newspaper with them and read it while commuting. The logistics team of HT, including drivers and the labour force of these two presses comprise around 200 members. Their work starts soon after the main newspaper is off the press. That basically includes national and international news common to all editions. Post that, they must manually insert the city-specific pages (LIVES), the supplements and the insertions, including sticking samples of products that come glued to the advertisement of the product (coffee, shampoo and cream sachets that form part of the advertisement!) in respective editions. This must be done very methodically as huge revenues ride on their back. All that done, the editions are segregated and loaded in vans and embark on their penultimate stop. 2018 July

11

Lead Story The dispatched editions are deposited with agents, depots or vendors at over 350 drop points. This number is steadily increasing as cities expand and delivery points must keep up to ensure timely delivery. From here, the agents pick up the copies and separate them according to location and demand and have their staff, most of whom ride bicycles, deliver HT, HH and Mint to the reader. Now, that’s for retail deliveries that most agents take care of. There is, however, another whole segment that the logistics team has to handle, independent of agent, or direct deliveries—the institutional supplies. There are 13 packing centres that handle this for schools (grade-wise), B-schools, (a special edition that goes to over 600 in Delhi/ NCR), hospitals, hotels, airports and railway stations! These are 180 drop points that must be synchronised, timed and coordinated. That requires quite a bit of logistical work and planning! So, while this work has evolved and is now run on a daily, well-planned schedule, the back-end team faces some challenges. It’s a high performing, demanding and tense job that must be performed perfectly in one shot, within the given time. As Devinder Singh, Head of Logistics put it: “There is no room for error because there is no time to rectify your mistakes.” To ensure un-interrupted functioning, coordination with the editorial and production team is imperative. Every step and stage must happen when it is meant to. He recalls a time when one of the presses was malfunctioning and dumping copies. His staff had to quickly shift focus from handling dispatches to help rectify the dumping problem. In spite of all hands being on deck, the edition was delayed by an hour. Quick decisions also have to be made in case of unforeseen 12

Delays as little as 10 minutes can upset the consumer’s schedule, and the effort of all… would be wasted

problems. On another occasion, one of the machines, that prints 32 pages, stopped functioning. That required a fast turn around and swift coordination with the editorial and circulation teams. The newspaper had to be brought down to 24 pages for it to be printed and dispatched on time. “All editions had to be remade before the printing could start. The pressure during those crucial hours was tremendous, but we pulled it off,” recalls Devinder. Another factor that has complicated the business is the increasing number of editions. “Earlier, we had just one loading point and vehicles went and picked up newspapers there. Now we have 3, and a vehicle has to go to each one of them, further complicating the process,” Devinder added. In spite of the challenges, Devinder loves his job because, “the learning curve is very high. I have to be

This operation is non-glamorous and quite hidden from the limelight. The expansion of editions and the territorial distribution scope has further exacerbated the problem. Said Ashish Aggarwal, Head Circulation and Commercial, “It is becoming increasingly difficult to find people who want to do this job.” He also pointed out to the fact that because of the low cost of the newspaper and the slow increase in circulation numbers, the margin has been static which makes this job unattractive for vendors who are in any case struggling to find people to deliver newspapers. “Gurgaon has

on my toes all the time.” He’s been doing his job for over 8 years now and believes that this job is like no other he has done. The Circulation Department works closely with logistics through the night to ensure that newspapers are delivered at depots, or drop-points, as per schedule. Their work starts between 3-3:30 am and continues into the wee hours of the morning. Post the drop, they must coordinate with vendors and distributors to ensure that the last lap of the journey is on schedule. The Circulation Department of not just HT, but the newspaper industry in general, is facing some challenges, not least being that this is a high intensity, night-shift job, done day after day, irrespective of holidays and even with some disregard to domestic emergencies.

grown vertically and exponentially, so a deliveryman must climb many more floors to deliver newspapers at each apartment. His workload has increased but his salary not so much. All of this has added to complicating the logistics of delivery and to deliver on time. To mitigate the challenges and ensure on-time delivery, the number of depots, has been substantially increased. Additionally, to provide a focused approach, residential societies have an allocated vendor who focuses on delivering to households living

there. It’s another matter, and to the discomfort of the customer, that the residents then are totally dependent on one vendor and his services. Keeping the vendor on track and ensuring that he is efficient has its own set of problems. The Circulation Department also relies on vendors and distributors to help increase the newspaper’s circulation figures and improve market share since they are directly in touch with the final consumer. It is, however, a difficult job to make them understand. Said Sanjiv Virmani, City Head, Gurgaon, Faridabad, North and South Delhi: “Most vendors are uneducated and it’s quite difficult to explain the nuances and ways to them to help us achieve this.” Additionally, as mentioned earlier, there are fewer people opting to do this work, given its unearthly hours and static margins that have impacted their remunerations that have not even kept up with the annual inflation. It’s a tough competitive world out there. And it takes every bit of the step, with precise punctuality and coordination for the physical copy of a newspaper to be delivered. The fact is that at least for the time being, there are several Indians, and given our population, it’s a substantial number, who look forward to reading newspapers in the morning. The circulation and logistics team work hard to ensure this. They are the unsung heroes called out to when things go wrong. But they are behind ensuring that each important story reaches the reader. Stories Emanate from

Transformations in Cities that Impact People Vinay Kamat, Editor, Mint, has over 30 years of journalistic experience in various cities; he discusses how cities influenced his journey and redefined his vision Do share some highlights of your professional journey... I’ve been an accidental journalist. But then one gets a high trying to figure out (hidden) things. The quest is worth it. Call it the mystery of the unstoppable pen. The curiosity quotient that infects journalism bit me, and since then it’s been rollercoaster curiosity. Every day is a day of learning. It’s a profession that humbles you and makes you a student rather than an expert. Fortunately, I have traveled through journalism to diverse cities, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, then Bangalore, Dubai, and Delhi. It’s been a fascinating journey across cities, learning how cities have changed and the unique things they reveal. As journalists, we often think that cities are about investigative stories. They are also about causes to celebrate. Human-interest stories make cities. Bangalore, which was once a very public-sector town, had its own lifestyles, and was laidback. Then, it grew into an IT power, the workforce changed—a pub culture emerged. In Delhi, journalism first changed with liberalization. Then the market grew, demographics got sliced, creating spaces for multimedia. Journalism was reborn. Now, internet has

As journalists, we often think cities are about investigative stories. They are also about causes to celebrate

upended journalism, digitalizing the profession with greater emphasis on social media. Cities too have changed the profession, hyper-locally. Cities keep changing its growth engines (startups are powering Bangalore today). We’ve seen that happening over the last few years, and it’s happening quickly now. In Dubai, for instance, journalism is defined by the mobile screens. Interesting. How do you visualize your career trajectory through the evolution and changes in cities. It’s all about cities and how they have changed. Take Gurgaon. It’s a modern start-up city today. Delhi grew into Gurgaon, triggered by its location as an aerocity. Corporates moved there. Now, many start-ups have led to new lifestyles. This has had a deep and profound impact on the way journalism is covered. How you cover news in Delhi is very different from how you cover news in Gurgaon and Bangalore. Delhi is very politics-centric, Gurgaon is more startup-centric like Bangalore. There are a lot more intersections between IT and lifestyles in newer cities like Gurgaon and Bangalore. Journalism is being redefined by these intersections, these are breeding grounds of newer and younger audiences.

Mint edit team bustling with action

How do you visualize Mint covering what you describe, particularly given the very limited attentionspan of the reader? Every move is a strategic move to mop up extra seconds, in fact extra nanoseconds, from the reader, whether print or mobile. We need to keep pace with the reader by marrying intuition and experience. Now add data to the equation. And you are better poised to take intuitive leaps. So, have you found what does or does not work? There are patterns that give you some answers. The rest depends on the kind of experiments you do to feed the patterns or create new ones. Mint has capitalized on rigor, insight—and credibility. It’s our job to capitalize on those strengths and laser-target audiences. There’s a perception that women and the youth do not really read financial dallies. Are you doing something to lure this segment?

It’s basically a fight to get those extra seconds, in fact extra nanoseconds, from the reader, whether its print or mobile It’s a very aspirational group—the millennial woman. We consider them a very important segment of our readership. Today, women are redefining businesses, workplaces and lifestyles. Our Business of Life section and our weekend brand Lounge reflect the intersections of business and work. So, how would you really define your readership? You cannot define readership or audience engagement unless you look at the way three key apps are defining the way we live, read, and enjoy: Whatsapp, Netflix, and Instagram. Can you find anything stickier?

What do you most enjoy about your job and what areas do you find monotonous? It’s about getting the reader excited about what you have produced. It is a constant endeavor to refocus a story, improve it, format it, and put it on the right platform. The challenge is enormous and there’s a race to figure out the right answers. That’s thrilling. I think we are also getting back to telling stories the way they should be told. We are slowly rediscovering the art of telling a story. If a story is not beautifully written, the reader will not read you. Ultimately, quality and content are important. What do you do when you are not working? It’s great to soak in the culture that each city throws up. The idea of celebrating a city and soaking in its curiosity keep you glued to a city and its lifestyles. But, then, you are always competing with Whatsapp, Netflix and Instagram. 2018 july

He was accompanied by his writer-former actor-producer wife Twinkle Khanna. Thousands of fans waited outside the HT building to get a glimpse of and hear Akshay speak. Talking about what makes him accept a film and whether he chooses subjects keeping his star status in mind, Akshay said, “I don’t think that because I am star, I should play certain kind of roles. When I am working on or making a film, I throw the star thing out of the window. For me, what matters is that I should play different characters and that it should inspire me.” While Akshay has been a part of ‘Stars In The City’ before, this was the first time Twinkle attended the event. The star couple highlighted how, besides their film, they are working toward making

Narrating a funny incident, she recalled: "Once when we were driving together, he said ‘Mom you have been very cranky you must have got your periods.’ And I said don’t be sexist, don’t stereotype. Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal floored their fans Actors Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, accompanied by director Meghna Gulzar, promoted their film ‘Raazi,’ interacted with the winners of HT City Stars In The City contest. They were at their candid best. There were ample revelations — behind the scene stories during the making of the film and anecdotes about each other — that had the audience captivated. Vicky revealed his love for Maths and how, while pursuing Engineering, he soon realised that acting was his true calling. “I was in my second year and our faculty took us for an industry visit, “humey aapna future dikhane ke liye aur sach mein mujhe aapna future dikh gaya... met. “If you hear ‘ooh, aah, ouch’ on the set you know Alia is here. Also, her favourite word keeps changing, from ‘yes’ to ‘nice’… Right now, it’s ‘tots’ (totally). If you ask her ‘Alia, do you like this?’, she’ll say, ‘Tots, love it,” he smiled. Alia agreed. A die-hard Alia fan asked her about what motivates her and she replied, “I love movies and love being an actor. Also, I just want to be better than what I did last.” We also discovered that Meghna is very particular about the way her characters speak the language in her films. “There is a reason for that. I have a father (Gulzar), whom I have to answer to at home and he has taken a promise from me that whenever I am associated with a project I should ensure the sanctity of the language. Because he knows that hamari jo generation hain unki zubaan itni saaf nahi hain jitni honi chahaiye. Gaaney mein bhi hum itna dhyan nahi detey hain and it hurts people like him,” she added. On popular demand, Alia sang Ae Watan from ‘Raazi’ and her mellifluous rendition left everyone asking for more.

Demystifying Financial Planning

Start with listing your goals and your current net worth—the sooner you start financial planning, the higher corpus you can accumulate

W

hen it comes to financial planning, you need to follow some general rules. Irrespective of what stage of life stage you are at, these rules remain relevant. New investors need a lot of guidance on where and how to begin. For investors with considerable experience who are occasionally confused, these financial planning rules are appropriate. These rules, however, should be adjusted, when required, to meet specific needs of individuals.

JULY 2018

Have a goal-based plan A financial plan comprises working to achieve your short and long-term goals and the money required to achieve these. The goals are time-bound and specific and your risk appetite will determine the investment havens you choose to grow your money. The chances of achieving your goals increases when you have a detailed financial plan. This doesn’t mean that you may not face hardships and hurdles along your financial journey. But a plan helps you to stay focused and overcome temporary

upheavals. It also helps you check losses, maximize returns and avoid panic exits when the markets are turbulent. Making a plan is a simple exercise. Start with listing your goals and your current net worth. Then, calculate the amount needed to attain each goal and the time duration in which you plan to achieve them. Finally, based on your risk-appetite, make a well-diversified investment portfolio balancing the debt, equity and cash component. The sooner you start, the higher corpus you can accumulate.

Ensure coverage of risks Sometimes, our busy schedules do no allow us to build wealth that is necessary to cover risks. It is imperative to factor in that your family might face financial jeopardy in case of your untimely demise or loss of income due to poor health or disability. Prolonged illnesses, leading to expensive hospitalization, may drain your finances. Therefore, in addition to an investment portfolio, you need to also have an insurance portfolio. An insurance portfolio may include risk coverage for premature death of the breadwinner (i.e. a term insurance), medical expenses (i.e. health insurance) and loss of income due to disability. The amount of risk cover can be determined by your stage of life, annual income, number of dependents and other factors. While buying an insurance policy keep your end-financial goals in mind and try to align both things accordingly. Look for a term plan which gives a higher sum assured at a reasonably low premium. Reduce impact of taxes on your returns Taxes are an unavoidable component of any financial plan. Improper tax planning can have lasting impact on your take-home returns and on the success of financial goals. You cannot ignore taxes but you can take steps to reduce their impact. In fact, you can use them tactfully to maximize your returns and minimize your losses. You may categorize your tax-planning as saving taxes, taxes payable and returns filing. As the financial year starts, think of ways to use exemptions and deductions to reduce your overall tax liability. In addition to availing Section 80C deductions, you

may also use exemptions under other provisions like health insurance premium under Section 80D. It is better to plan for your exemptions at the beginning of financial year. In this way, you will be able to invest in assets which align with your tax planning and overall financial goals. Procrastination would result in last minute purchase of irrelevant insurance plans or illiquid assets. You must also be aware of taxation on assets you own and implications of buying and selling on the taxation of capital gains. Track your investment portfolio Tracking your investments is as important as building the portfolio. A regular review of your portfolio helps you to keep track of how you are progressing toward your goals and take corrective measures in case

The chances of achieving your goals increases when you have a detailed financial plan

of any digressions. You may choose to rebalance your portfolio on a quarterly basis for short term goals and annually for long-term ones. Refrain, however, from constantly checking your portfolio. Re-balancing your portfolio enables you to bring the skewed asset allocation in line with the original asset allocation. You need to buy low and sell high. Impulsively redeeming investments in the short run might be detrimental to your goals. Irrespective of market movements, your actions need to be based on your financial goals. Additionally, remember is to weed out inferior assets that are lowering the portfolio performance. You may sell stocks and redeem units of consistently underperforming mutual fund investments. Stay away from being defrauded An ideal financial plan not only helps in goals achievement but also prevents you from being vulnerable to frauds. Several times, you might discover money-doubling schemes, or ponzi schemes, that promise unreasonably high returns in a short period of time. You need to be wary of such schemes and stay away from them. It is not possible to make quick returns without bearing associated risks. Additionally, get rid of elements that can drill a hole in your financial plan. Eliminate unnecessary expenditure and clear credit card bills in full. You may even reduce your credit card usage and postpone your wants to match your income. Finally, ensure you invest only in those instruments whose investment mechanism you understand. 2018 July
