VISITORS FROM JAPAN By Hjh Pusparaini Hj Thani, Library Officer, Institut Teknologi Brunei
Two librarians from Japan Ms Tomoko Kamiya from Nagoya University Library and Ms Asami Tanaka from Rissho University Library were at the ITB Library on Tuesday 16 August 2011 for a visit. They were met upon arrival by Dyg Hjh Pusparaini. The aim of their visit was to learn about the academic library services in Brunei Darussalam specifically on e-library services and management of the library. They learnt about the RFID tagging used in the collections which they found to be interesting and also the digitising works for the eRIS collection. eRIS was launched in ITB Library on 9 April 2008 and was an e-government project. A web based library management system called Digital Media Collection Management System was implemented to ease searching, cataloguing viewing and archiving of digitized ITB products and materials and access the library collection.

VISIT TO SILICON VALLEY
Pn Nellie attending the APEC Women and the Economy Summit in San Francisco, California from 13-16 Sept 2011 together with other delegates had the opportunity of visiting three important facilities, namely Google, Intel and Marvell. The visitors were welcomed by Dr. Patrick Ryan at Google, visited the Intel Museum and at Marvell we were welcomed by Ms. Weili Dai, Co-Founder and Ms. Renu Bhatia, VP of Sales, Strategic Accounts. Marvell hosted a sumptuous sushi reception and visitors were entertained to live music. Marvell is the top three semiconductors producers in the world.

APEC WOMEN AND THE ECONOMY SUMMIT (WES) Pn Nellie (BLA President) as Women Business Council’s Secretary attended WES which was held on 13-16 Sept 2011 at Westin San Francis, San Francisco. It was attended by women leaders from the 21 APEC economies and equally notable leaders both men and women spoke at the Summit. The programme included Keynote Addresses, Plenary, Breakfast and luncheon talks, break out sessions, receptions and visits. Five women innovators were also honoured during this time. On the 16 Sept 2011, the U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a Keynote Address ‘Some Leaders are born Women’ in which she outlined a vision for a fundamental transformation of our economies. She also called for more and better data to measure our results and drive our policy-making.
For the first time a Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE) was formed followed by a High Level Policy Dialogue chaired by Hillary Clinton. Puan Haslina Taib, CEO Bag Networks delivered a luncheon talk on the cause of e-Bunda Free Learning and Education for Women and launched the new look of e-Bunda with links to WBC Brunei website as a collaborative partnership in driving e-learning initiatives. The summit ended with the San Francisco Declaration which called for promoting greater access to financial services for women entrepreneurs, improving women’s access to markets by identifying networks and associations, encouraging the empowerment of women and removing discriminatory practices and working to support the rise of women leaders-in both the public and private sectors..
A Pre-Summit study visit to the Silicon Valley was arranged with visits to Google, Intel and Marvell.
