KOLEJ UNIVERSITI PERGURUAN UGAMA SERI BEGAWAN FIRST CONVOCATION A total of 452 graduates of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) received their certificates from His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of KUPU SB on 18 Oct 2011, at college's first convocation ceremony, held at the International Convention Centre, Berakas His Majesty's received the Honorary Doctor of Letters (Islamic Education) in recognition of His Majesty's role of leadership and governance in carrying out the execution of the laws and teachings of the religion of Islam, emphasising the mastery of Islamic education and maintaining the life experiences as a Muslim for the country's prosperity through education. REPORT ON THE APEC CONFERENCE ON INNOVATION TRADE AND TECHNOLOGY AND THE APEC STUDY CENTERS CONFERENCE, 19-23 SEPT 2011, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA by Dyg Hjh Pusparaini Hj Thani, Library Officer Institut Teknologi Brunei
I was very privileged and honoured for being invited due to my involvement with CIPTA, to join the delegation to attend the APEC Conference on Innovation Trade and Technology and the APEC Study Conference in San Francisco, California. This was my first visit to the United States and I wish to share my experiences through this brief report. The San Francisco events were organised around the APEC Third Senior Officials Meeting and related ministerial and high-level meetings. These meetings included dialogue on Energy, Transportation, Women & the Economy, Digital Prosperity, Healthcare Innovation, and many other topics. APEC Conference on Innovation Trade and Technology The conference took place on the 19- 20 September 2011 at the The Bently Reserve and Westin St Francis Hotel. The programme included keynote remarks, CEO Conversation, Breakout Sessions (Concurrent Sessions) and Panel Discussions. 19 September 2011 High-Level Conference on Innovation, Trade and Technology: keynote address: “Crossroads of Innovation, Trade and Technology” 20 September 2011 High-Level Conference on Innovation, Trade and Technology: CEO conversation: “The Transformational Nature of ICT Usage & Its Impact on Innovation and Economic Growth” High-Level Conference on Innovation, Trade and Technology: lunch keynote addresses: “Getting Innovation Policy Right – Essential Ingredients” High-Level Conference on Innovation, Trade and Technology: panel discussions: - Shaping Innovation Policy to Drive Efficient and Prosperous Global Markets - Shaping Policies to Drive Innovation at Home High-Level Conference on Innovation, Trade and Technology: keynote remarks: “The Challenge – What APEC Can Do to Advance Innovation”
Keynote speaker at the APEC High-level Conference on Innovation, Trade and Technology. The U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra discussed on where APEC economies are urged to discuss data sharing. Other topics included the role of IT in helping Trade and Economic Growth, Shaping Policies to drive Innovation, Fostering Innovation through Open Trade and investment, SMEs and Start up and so on.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT LIBRARY By Nellie Sunny The BLA President in continuing with her library visits, paid a visit to the Curriculum Development Department Library, MOE on 22 October 2011 and met with Cikgu Pg Hjh Rosini Pg Hj Mahmud, Senior Education Officer in charge of the Library and Educational Resources Unit. The Curriculum Development Department (CDD) was formed in 1984 under the Ministry of Education. Its aim is to: Plan and develop quality school curriculum, in keeping with national needs and aspirations as well as to enhance teaching and learning through the diversification of curriculum materials. Formerly it was known as the Curriculum Development Centre in 1978 and in 1981 was renamed the Curriculum and Textbooks Unit. The Unit’s library is located on two sites within the Ministry, namely the Gallery and the Library and Educational Resources. The Gallery This is on the first floor of the new block, MOE. Visitors are brought here to view a display of text books that are being used by schools under the SPN21 and books and SPN21 frameworks produced by the Department and also special subject CDs produced by schools. There are also selected Bruneiana materials and main reference materials for officer’s reference use. It has VILIS and internet access and a tv viewing area.

From page 4 Library and Educational Resources This library is located on the second floor of Block A, MOE. It is a spacious library equipped with ample reading places, theses collection by students under the Brunei Government Scholarship Scheme, Bruneiana Collection, multimedia collection, ASEAN Collection, Reports and Working Papers, General Reading materials, educational information and newspaper collection. The library can also accommodate 80 persons at any one time for any workshops or briefings. It provides advisory services to teachers and primary school librarians on the planning and implementing of activities and in the use of libraries and teaching aids.

The Brunei Online was held for the first time on Fri 21 October 2011 in Bandar Seri Begawan. It was organised by the Asia Inc Forum in cooperation with TelBru. It was attended by bloggers, and the social media community. KUPU SB LAUNCHED NEW TITLES Ten publications of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) were launched on 17 Oct 2011 in a ceremony held to mark the university college's first convocation. INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT AT UNISSA LIBRARY Four Information and Library Management Course (NDILM) students from Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College on 30 Sept 2011 completed a three months industrial attachment at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Library. They were Mohamad Khairul Syazwan bin Othman, Adizza Rehannizzan binti Anuar, Rosnah binti Abdul Rahman and Zaimah binti Haji Tamit. Also benefitting from a one month industrial attachment at UNISSA Library from 20 June to 20 July 2011 was Dk Hjh Mas Diana Pg Hj Damit who is currently studying BSc Economics in Information and Library Studies at Aberystwyth University, Wales. During their attachment, the students had hands on experience working at the service counter interacting with academics, students and other library users. They learnt about acquisition of library materials and the use of SPYDUS library system.
From page 3 The APEC Study Centers Conference The APEC Study Centers Consortium meets regularly for an annual conference. This year, the meeting was on 22-23 Sept 2011 in San Francisco, California, at the Hyatt Regency hotel located at the Embarcadero Center as part of activities hosted by the United States. The conference is jointly organised by the Berkeley APEC Study Center and the University of California San Diego APEC Study Center on behalf of the US Consortium of APEC Study Centers, directed by Professors Vinod Aggarwal and Richard Feinberg. The main Keynote Address was delivered by Ambassador Muhamad Noor Yacob, APEC Secretariat Executive Director. The conference was divided into 5 sessions (panel) with specific themes. The themes were Sustainable Growth in East and Southeast Asia, Multilateral Institutions and Sustainable Growth, Regulatory Efficiency, Economic Integration in Asia and Latin America, APEC and Trans-Pacific Partnership, Trade and Economic Integration, Regional Trade Institution, and Issues in APEC Integration. Conclusion The two conferences provided me with insights into APEC and its activities particularly in promoting economic growth and at the same time ensuring environmental sustainability in the region.
