BRUNEI NEWSPAPERS PART II By Nellie Dato Paduka Haji Sunny This article briefly descibes Brunei Newspapers in alphabetical order. BERITA BRUNEI Berita Brunei which was first published in March 1957. It was printed in Malay and also partly in Jawi. It was a weekly publication and was published every Thursday and sold for about 10 cents each with a print run of about 5,000. By July 1958, the Jawi was dropped and by October 1959 it was renamed as Berita Borneo. However the newly named Berita Borneo only lasted for 5 editions and the last publication was in December 1958. BINTANG HARIAN / DAILY STAR The Bintang Harian/Daily Star published in both Malay and English first appeared in March 1966. It appeared everyday except Sunday and costed 15 cents each. More than 10,000 copies were printed daily as it was published not just for Brunei, but also for Sabah and Sarawak, West Malaysia and Singapore. More than 15,000 copies were printed in January 1971 before it stopped publication when the publishers The Star Press became a subsidiary of The Brunei Press. BORNEO BULLETIN For well over half a century the Borneo Bulletin has remained the leading local newspaper in this country. The Borneo Bulletin was first published in 7 November 1953 as a weekly news-sheet community English newspaper for expatriates working with British Malayan Petroleum Company later known as the Brunei Shell Petroleum in the Belait District and sold for 20 cents each. At first most of its news concentrated more on news in Borneo with special emphasis on Brunei and its first publication run of about 3,500 was the largest in Borneo then. Six years after its inception in 1959, the founders of the Borneo Bulletin sold the weekly newspaper of 12 pages with a mere 3,500 circulation to the Straits Times Singapore. The first bulletins were published with different covers for the three different editions for Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak. Its publication increased to about 10,000 by 1957 but was reduced to about 6,000 in 1970 as a result of both Sarawak and Sabah being incorporated in Malaysia. However by 1983, production had increased to about 30,000 before gradually reducing to about 10,000 by 1997. In 1985, Brunei Darussalam's first public listed company, QAF, took over part of the shares of Brunei Press from the Straits Times. In September 1990, the Borneo Bulletin became a full-fledged daily newspaper in Brunei Darussalam with QAF acquiring full ownership. The change saw remarkable growth in circulation with an average current readership of 100,000 readers daily while the Weekend and Sunday edition have an average of 125,000 readers. Today the Borneo Bulletin remains the foremost source of information, providing extensive coverage on local and foreign affairs, and the region’s business news, detailed stock market reports of the Singapore and Kuala Lumpur stock exchanges. In addition to the more serious news, sports, lifestyle and leisure pages are also included. BRUNEI DARUSSALAM DAILY DIGEST Brunei Darussalam Daily Digest was first published in January 1990 by the Information Department and had since 1993 ceased publication. Go to page 5

PELITA BRUNEI Pelita Brunei was first published in 15 February 1956 in cyclostyle by the government. It carried a Titah by the then His Highness Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien inaugurating the publication. In 1957, Pelita Brunei was produced twice monthly and was at first produced using A4 size paper before increasing in size to 9 inch by 14 inch in 1959. It was not until July 1965 that Pelita Brunei became a weekly Malay newspaper. About 3,000 copies were printed by the 1990s on every Wednesdays. The content of the newspaper increased from about 4 pages to about 24 pages now and with a second part ‘Aneka’ being added to it containing all the government job vacancies and tenders being awarded in the government as well as other interesting features and articles. Today it is published twice a week and about 16,000 copies of Pelita Brunei are distributed free to the public at government departments, shopping malls and some petrol stations.
