Nurturing an informed society CERTIFICATES PRESENTATION A Certificate Presentation Ceremony for participants who completed courses TO1 and T05 in Cataloguing and Indexing and T02 Dewey Decimal Classification System was held on 27 May 2010 at the DBP Lambak Kanan Library, Jalan 99. On hand to present the certificates was Nellie BLA President. Before the ceremony the President addressed the participants and presented a briefing on Professional Development Scheme, on becoming a BLA member, contributuion of articles in Wadah Perpustakaan, communcating with BLA through BLA website and email and CONSAL XV Conference in 2012 in Bali. Also present were Awg Hj Abdullah, Dyg Hjh Rosnani, Dyg Hjh Pusparaini and course facilitators Awg Hj Abd Talip and Pg Hj Mohd Shahminan. BLA wishes to congratulate the participants for completing the courses successfully.

T05 COURSE: CATALOGUING AND INDEXING T05 Cataloguing and Indexing was held from 24-27 May 2010 at the DBP Lambak Kanan Library, Jalan 99. It was conducted by Awg Hj Abd Talip Hj Tassim, Library Officer from Library DBP Brunei. Due to the overwhelming response, this is a repeat of course TO1, held earlier. In this course the participants learnt about cataloguing and use of cataloguing tools such as AACR2, MARC, the library catalogue and products such as OPAC. In Indexing they learnt about the principles of indexing, its processes, controlled vocabulary, subject analysis and indexing policies followed by plenty of practical exercises.
BLA / CONSAL PUBLICATIONS BLA President presented three books to Mr R. Ramachandran, Executive Director National Book Development Council Singapore cum AFCC Festival Director, on 7 May 2010 in Singapore, namely the Directory of CONSAL Executive Board Members, Directory of Islamic Libraries, Resource & Cultural Centres and the Handbook on Librarian & Library Awards in CONSAL Member Countries. The books were produced under the BLA/CONSAL Regional Project and printed with funding from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei. The titles were among seven rd titles launched by BLA in Hanoi during the 3 CONSAL IV Executive Board Meeting on 20 April 2009. Mr Rama formerly of NLB Singapore, was the first CONSAL Secretary General (2000-2004) and IFLA Secretary General (2004).

ASIAN FESTIVAL OF CHILDREN’S CONTENT
The Asian Festival of Chidren’s Content (AFCC) “Asian Content for the World’s Children” organised by the National Book Development Council of Singapore and the Arts House, was a 4 day festival, the first of its kind in the region and was held on 6-9 May 2010 at the Arts House Singapore. It attracted some 400 participants from 19 countries, comprising authors, book illustrators, publishers, librarians, teachers, parents, media specialists, literary agents, translators and vendors of educational products and services. Its objective is to promote writing, publishing and production as well as access to Asian children’s content worldwide. There were 7 tracks: New Media Technologies and Children’s Content Alchemy of writing Illustrators Palette Librarian’s Menu Publishers Daily Bread. Go to page 5.

From page 4 Marketing and Distribution ACWIC Highlights 4 main conferences, 70 expert speakers, 84 sessions: Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference (ACWIC) Asian Children’s Publishers Symposium Asian Primary & Preschool Teachers Congress Asian Parents Forum There were forums, workshops, talks and book launches, Book Illustrators Gallery and an Asian Tapestry musical extravaganza for the family. Two awards were given namely the Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award cash prize of $10,000. ( biennial ) and Scholastic Asian Book Award cash prize of $10,000. ( annual ). The festival is widely published on print media as well as on the cyberspace. It garners positive feedbacks from all that attended the festival. The inaugural Meeting of AFCC Board of Advisors was held on 7 May 2010 and was chaired by Ms Claire Chiang Senior Vice President of Banyan Tree Holdings and Brunei Darussalam was represented by Nellie Dato Paduka Haji Sunny. The Brunei Darussalam Library Association is a supporter of AFCC and has been honoured with the appointment of its President Nellie as an Advisory Board Member. The Organising Committee has already met to plan for next year’s festival. We are hoping more Bruneian participants will attend the conference next year.
