Alcatel at Expo 92

Alcatel had made important investments in the sponsorship of the Space Cinema (whose budget amounted to more than one billion pesetas) and in the Planetarium of the Pavilion of the Universe , two of the great stars of the Expo in terms of audiovisual attractions. Eureka! The passion to know was the title of the spectacular lm production, sponsored by this company, which recreated important milestones of the discovery adventure from ve hundred years ago to the present day.

The inclined seats gave an effect of greater reality to the image. The future came to this innovative cinema with its space theaters, as projected in this semicircular room, equipped with the revolutionary Omnimax system. The Space Cinema combined a large hemispherical screen, inscribed in a dome about 24 meters high, with a powerful digital sound equipment.

Alcatel Space Cinema Plane. Its perforated aluminum screen had 180 degrees, which made the visitor believe that it was inside the images that were being viewed. The seats were another of the attractions of this room, since they were arranged on an inclined plane that allowed viewers to contemplate the images on a 24 meter diameter screen. Alcatel was also present in the pavilion of the Universe with a surprising show under the title << The cosmic adventure >>. This digital planetarium was placed in the Plaza del Futuro of the site and used the Digistar system, which could simulate the movement of space itself, travel through the stars, contemplate the effects when changing their position, understand their evolution in the time, etc. save

Honor Day of the Spanish Navy at Expo 92. Posted on May 1, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 01, 1992.

Interestingly, the day of honor of the Spanish Navy at the Expo coincided in the date with the celebration in Spain of the May Day festival. The Spanish Navy celebrated that day its day of honor at Expo 92, a day of honor devoid of acts, performances, speeches and press conferences that went unnoticed by the public, since everything was in a reception of the Spanish Government to the high Navy commanders of thirteen South American countries, who arrived at the Universal Exposition invited by the admiral chief of the Defense Staff, Carlos Vila Miranda .

Spanish Navy The reception was given by the Minister of Defense, JuliĂĄn GarcĂa Vargas , on behalf of the Spanish Government, the Commissioner of the Expo, Emilio Cassinello and Carlos Vila himself . This reception took place in front of the door of the Royal Pavilion and after greetings and pictures of rigor, the delegation entered the pavilion to proceed to the signing in the honor book of the Expo that opened His Majesty the King on April 20 of 1992, day of the inauguration of the sample. The thirteen South American countries, whose top managers were received by the Expo and the Spanish Government were Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Five hundred years after an admiral arrived for the rst time in America, the Spanish Armada had at the beginning of the 90s a leading role lost in the last years of the last century. He had recovered it mainly because of his participation in numerous exercises of the Atlantic Alliance and his presence within the international coalition during the Gulf War. In this way the Spanish Armada celebrated its day of honor at the Expo, linking to the Armada of the American countries. save

The National Day of Monaco is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 16, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 16, 1992.

Royal Family of Monaco during his visit to the Expo 92. That day was celebrated the national day of the Principality of Monaco in the precincts of the Universal Exhibition of Seville. The events were attended by the sovereign Prince Rainier III, Crown Prince Albert and Princess Carolina . Despite being the state of Monaco one of the smallest in Europe, the Monaco Pavilion had given the bell at the Expo, arousing the most enthusiastic attention of the public.

Flag of the Principality of Monaco. The Pavilion of the Principality of Monaco counted during Expo 92 with a capacity of 10,000 people a day, attracted mainly by a giant aquarium that reproduced during the Universal Exhibition the ora and fauna of the Monegasque coast.

Interior of the Pavilion Aquarium. To give the aquarium more verismo during the six months of the exhibition had arti cial waves, remains of submerged amphoras in the bottom of the sea and divers who were submerged.

Diver in the interior of the Monaco Pavilion Aquarium. Other exhibition elements of the pavilion were the mannequins dressed in opera costumes from the turn of the century, the racing car that won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1991 under Carlos Sainz and a Bugatti from 1924.

Race car that won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1991. The main facade of the pavilion of the Principality of Monaco reproduces the Monte Carlo Casino and the Oceanographic Museum , two of the most characteristic architectural monuments of Monaco.

Main facade Pavilion of the Principality of Monaco. The seafaring vocation of this country was represented, externally, by the statue of Prince Albert I, called the Wise Prince, an authentic sea lion who made a total of twenty-eight scienti c expeditions, from the Azores to Norway.

Statue of Prince Albert I next to the side facade of the pavilion. At the entrance to the pavilion you were greeted by two palace guards, who, although papier-mâchÊ, from far and in the queue, gave the appearance of being real. The aquarium is crossed by a tunnel of thirteen meters that gave the sensation of jumping into the depths of the sea. The decoration reproduces an underwater cave, where the fauna and ora of the coral reefs have been reconstructed as in their natural environment. The aquarium contains 400 cubic meters of water, with a height and a diameter of 4 and 12 meters respectively. During the Universal Exhibition in 1992 it was the largest aquarium in Europe made of methacrylate and synthetic water.

Royal Family of Monaco during his visit on the national day of his country (ABC Photography). Although Monaco celebrated that day its national day in the Isla de la Cartuja, the focal point of the day was the Grimaldi family, it moves to the Expo 92 to pay homage to the Principality of their country. The royal family of Monaco moved from the rst hour of the morning to the precinct of the Isla de la Cartuja in a ceremonial caravan from a central hotel in the capital of Seville to the Camino Real that gave access to the Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas where they signed in the Honor Book of the Universal Exhibition.

Royal Family of Monaco at the main door of the Royal Pavilion. The Palenque, was the second scenario by antonomasia that took importance in the celebration of the festive days in the Expo with the sign of no localities from very early hour in the national day of Monaco. The sympathy that caused the Grimaldi family among the Spaniards would be evident by the reaction of the queues presented by the Spanish pavilion, a must for of cial visits. Applause and cheers accompanied the entrance of the three members of the Royal Family to the Spanish pavilion, where they were presented with a porcelain commemorating the event that hosted Spain during that 1992. save

The National Day of Russia is celebrated at the Universal Exposition of Seville. Posted on May 12, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 12, 1992.

Pavilion of Russia. The date we remember today was reserved for the Soviet Union, then the Confederation of Independent States (CIS), and nally Russia . The famous << perestroika staircase Âťof the pavilion designed by the Latvian architect Juris Poga had survived the regime that illuminated it, and with its continuous changes of colors and letters could be symbolized perfectly the variations of political color that were lived in the last years before the Exhibition in the shadow of the Kremlin.

Russia ag. Of the right or of the reverse, the pavilion located in the Way of the Acacias had been one of the great unknowns of the Expo, and an example of which the creation and development of the Universal Exhibitions were totally determined by the avatars of the history, because History is what gives reason to these events.

Logo Pavilion of Russia. When the excavator machines began to work in the Cartuja, it was planned that we would attend an Expo starring the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, with large buildings, cutting-edge technology and abundant cultural offer. However, the crisis suffered both had also moved to Seville, where the miniature geopolitics of visitors was highlighted by Japan and Canada, or even by Monaco and Chile, rather than by the two giants.

Interior Russian Pavilion. Yuri Denisenkov was the current Russian commissar for the Show replacing Nikolai Filippov , who presented in 1988 the building that was to represent the USSR. After the disappearance of the URRS at the end of 1991, the former Soviet republics showed no interest in participating in Expo 92, fully occupied in remedying a disastrous political and economic situation.

Russian Pavilion during Expo 92. Russia gradually assumed the commitments acquired by the Soviet Union, through the Embassy in Spain. Located in the Universal Exhibition of Seville, on Avenue 4, in front of the Canada and Monaco pavilion, that of Russia had an area of 5,000 square meters, of which 3,000 had been allocated to exhibition area and the remaining thousand were divided between the restaurant and a show room, with capacity for 400 people.

Avenue where the Russian Pavilion stood in front of the Monaco Pavilion and Canada Pavilion. The exhibition consisted of three different sections: << The man discovers the earth >>, << The man discovers the Cosmos >> and << The man discovers himself >>. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Mikhail Nikilforovich highlighted during the national day of Russia the importance of the Expo for the peaceful world coexistence of his country. He also warned that Russia, after removing the garb of totalitarianism, is a nation that wanted to open up to the world and prosperity.

The Aragón Honor Day is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 5, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 05, 1992.

Pabellón de Aragón. That May 5, 1992 was nally the date on which the Day of Honor of Aragon was celebrated at the Universal Exposition of Seville, with the presence of its president, Emilio Eiroa . At rst, the date of honor coincided with the feast of his employer, San Jorge, on April 23, but he was transferred to this day that we remember today. Aragon lived during that 1992 a great rise of its autonomic consciousness, its day of honor in the Island of the Cartuja was endorsed by an ample representation of institutions and social sectors Aragonese that moved until Seville to enhance with his presence the day of honor.

Pabellón de Aragón. Those responsible for their participation in Expo 92, led by José Ángel Biel , counselor of the Presidency, and Javier Mateo , director of the pavilion, had made a great effort to convince Aragonese institutions, town councils and companies to invest and be present in the Expo 92 could be pro table in the long term. For this reason, in the pavilion of Aragón there was a business center, which the Aragonese Government offered to the companies of its region. The <<Aragón 176 >> program intended that each day of the Expo had an Aragonese institution or town as the protagonist of its pavilion.

Pabellón de Aragón. The budget of Aragon in Expo 92 amounted to 2,000 million pesetas, of which a thousand had been contributed by the Diputación General de Aragón, ve hundred by local institutions and the rest by private initiative. Among the cultural activities that Aragón organized during the six months of the exhibition, it is worth mentioning the participation of this community in the opening day of the Itálica Festival, with a star gala that honored María de Ávila.

Pabellón de Aragón with ags. Those who were interested in crafts had in the pavilion ceramic tiles framed in wood from Salas Altas (Huesca), candelabra and traditional forger of Albarracín (Teruel) forge, and the ceramic vase and ceramic baptismal font from Muel (Zaragoza) .

Structure of the pavilion. On the rst oor of the building, visitors could watch a video-wall with 48 28-inch screens, a six-and-a-half-minute lm directed by Agustín Sánchez Vidal, Espejo de España Award (1988), where the territory was treated , folklore, tradition and customs of this autonomous community.

Video-Wall of 48 screens inside the pavilion. In addition to the exhibition of works by Goya, the contents of the pavilion were centered, for example, on Mudejar art, whose beauty had made Teruel considered by Unesco world heritage. The day of honor of Aragon at the Expo would end with a typical Aragonese drum that had made Calanda popular and that could be heard throughout the walk of regional pavilions. save

The day of Honor of the Basque Country is celebrated. Posted on April 21, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - April 21, 1992.

Pavilion of the Basque Country. That day of 1992 the Basque Country opened the successive turn of days of honor and nationals that developed throughout the Universal Exhibition of Seville . The day was dressed for Basque music and dances that ooded the venue with their music while the of cial events scheduled for that reason happened. The Lehendakari, José Antonio Ardanza , presided, accompanied by the Minister of the Interior, José Luis Corcuera , and the Commissioner of the Expo, Emilio Cassinello , the inauguration of the Basque pavilion in the exhibition.

Interior plan Pavilion of the Basque Country. After the formal ceremony that was closed by the sounds of the Agur Jaunak, (goodbye sir), a traditional Basque anthem, the delegation went to the pavilion of the Basque Country where the lendakari proceeded to hoist the ikurriña and uttered a few words, rst in Euskera and then in Spanish, in which he stressed that the Basque people were present at this Universal Exhibition because they actively participated in the American adventure.

Night illumination of the pavilion. After the visit to the pavilion, Ardanza pointed out that this pavilion responded to what the Basque people wanted it to answer, a pavilion where it was combined on the one hand a historical reference of the presence of the Basques in all that was the American adventure.

Detail of the facade of the pavilion of the Basque Country. From the pavilion of the Basque Country we also highlight a very unique cinema that gave an image of the current Euskadi, and then showed itself, the industrial and technological Euskadi betting on the future in that combination of progress of progress, discovery and technology and modernity. The slogan of the presence of Euskadi in the Universal Exhibition of Seville was << Euskadi Herría >>, the country of the Basques, around which all its interesting programmed contents revolved. The structure of its pavilion was designed by Luis Angoloti and Apolinario Fernández de Sousa and reminded of the typical Basque villages, especially on its characteristic roof. The façade evoked, with national pride, the tricolor and bicrucífera teaches of the territories that integrate the community, with continuous glass that at night became reddish with the stone of Mañaria apiconada and the molding, with green illumination, it offered a unmistakable character. save

The route continued along the << ramp of disasters >>, named for the continuous bombardment of images of droughts, earthquakes, oods, eruptions of volcanoes and even of Omayra , the girl who was trapped in the foothills of the volcano of Nevado del Ruiz de Colombia, when it erupts.

Members of the Red Cross help in the last moments of life of Omayra Sรกnchez who was a Colombian girl of 13 years, victim of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano during the eruption that devastated the town of Armero. In the room, which remained completely dark as in the rest of the route, the symbols of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent and the phrase " A Light in the Darkness" translated into four languages were illuminated for a moment. . The visit to the pavilion ended in an open space where, in daylight, the visitor was taken to an amphitheater where, through various screens, they were informed of the performance of the International Movement of the Red Cross. Also on the outside, on a wall there were placed still photographs with what constitutes the daily life of the Red Cross volunteers.

This pavilion, despite becoming one of the least visited pavilions, only about two thousand people daily, was considered by TIME magazine as one of the most interesting of the Expo. The general commissioner of the Expo 92, Emilio Cassinello highlighted in his speech the well-deserved tribute to the volunteers who were working on the international misfortunes that occurred at every moment.

This community celebrated the 10th anniversary of its autonomy in 1992, coinciding with Expo 92 and the 500 years of the Discovery of America, to which the Castilian-La Mancha ancestors were so closely related. The aim of Castilla-La Mancha was to present the most ingrained of the classical cultural heritage, combining it with the presence of contemporary art and the main supporters of this century. Among the contents of the pavilion, the tradition, folklore, culture and the future vocation of the region were highlighted.

Castilla-La Mancha Pavilion. That day on the occasion of the Day of Honor of Castilla-La Mancha, there was a large number of cultural performances, among whose groups include the Drums of Hellín and Tobarra, Mazantini of Ciudad Real, Danzantes and Pecados de Camuñas, Rondalla de Tendilla de Puebla of the Aljibe and dances La Cotilla and the Dancers of Isso de Méntrida. These groups acted throughout that day at the different entrance gates to the Expo site, Palenque and the Castilla-La Mancha Pavilion. One of the highlights of the day was the performance of the theater group "Núcleo", which represented the play "Don Quixote" next to the lake. Castilla-La Mancha celebrated its day surrounded by celebrities such as Sara Montiel, Pepe Tous, Luis Cobos, José Luis Perales, Palomo Linares and Marina Danko, the bull ghter Manuel Caballero, the painters Rafael Canogar and Manuel López Villaseñor, the sculptor Gustavo Torner and politicians of the region .

Thousands of people could contemplate the wonderful works of art that were created in these lands Castilian-La Mancha, guarded by Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, on the horse "Clavileño" The contents of the pavilion went back to the reign of Alfonso X, whose most important events were summarized in a ten-minute documentary about the School of Translators of Toledo; the visitor continued the tour of the "Routes and People" of this land. Contemporary artists were also present in a hall of the pavilion and on the ground oor with traveling exhibitions.

On the eastern edge of Lake Cartuja, the visitor observed a building dominated by wood and a material in vogue among the architects, the Cortez steel. This pavilion occupied an extension of land of 2,166 square meters, under whose ósca and neutral appearance prevailed clear, clear and serene interiors, where it had wanted to re ect above all, the manchego character. The route passed through an interior courtyard that divided the pavilion into two modules, with translucent glass walls that provided great luminosity to all the interior rooms. The building had two oors; At the patio level there was an information-reception desk, attended by two hostesses.

The visitor was taken to a projection room, with capacity for sixty people, where he could contemplate in multivisión during seven minutes, the advances obtained during the reign of Alfonso X "The Wise person", centered mainly in the School of Translators in Toledo. The most relevant of Castilla-La Mancha represented in its pavilion with photographs of monuments, castles, villages, landscapes, faces, parties, ora, nature, folklore, etc., which were among the photographs displayed in the pavilion.

The Honorary Day of the Banco Central Hispano is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on April 29, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - April 29, 1992.

Banco Central Hispano of cial sponsor of Expo 92. To begin our Expo-hemeroteca of today, it is necessary to say like curiosity that the Central Hispanic Bank was the unique participant in Expo'92 that counted on two days of honor since when the program of the Sample, the Central Bank and the Banco Hispano Americano were separate sponsor banks of the Expo, today April 29 we remember the rst day of honor, and on October 5 the second day would be celebrated. The merger had allowed it to be the bank with the most of ces in the room (eight). In Seville they wanted to record their links with Andalusia, especially through regional entities, such as the Bank of Granada and the Bank of Jerez.

The posters with the logo of the Central Hispano were distributed throughout the monorail train route. The Central Bank of Spain took advantage of the occasion to organize in Seville a meeting of the councils of ten of its societies at that time (Dragados, Cepsa, Aumar, Azucarera, Vallehermoso, Central Hispano Generali, Banco de Granada, Bank of Jerez and the Bank itself Central Hispano), this summit would constitute the Central Hispanic Foundation. The Central Hispano was the sponsor of the theater that took during the Expo the name of this nancial institution, the Central Hispano Theater , built on the Island of the Cartuja and thought for the new scenic tendencies, being the most modern of those existing in Spain during 1992

Central Theater during Expo 92 (Photography Architects Ayala). One billion pesetas was the cost of this sponsorship for a room that was reused after the Expo as the headquarters of the Centro Andaluz de Teatro (Central Theater). The Bank paid the premiere of << La Gallarda >>, a show that inaugurated the theater, with a beautiful book that contained the full text of the work of Rafael Alberti and articles by writers such as Octavio Paz and Ernesto Sábato. The theater was designed by Gerardo Ayala and hosted during the Expo 92 the most rabidly contemporary programming, with a room and stage that allowed to place the works and the public where appropriate. In addition, it has a rehearsal room that also served to represent shows of less technical complexity. During the six months of the Expo, international artists such as Bob Wilson, William Forsythe, Jean Claude Gallotta, the Ballet Rosas, Laurie Anderson, Jan Fabre, Salvador Távora and Francisco Nieva , among others, performed during the six months of the Expo .

Banco Central Hispano sponsored the Central Hispano Theater and the restoration works of the Monastery of La Cartuja. The restoration of the Cartuja de Santa María de las Cuevas, emblematic building of the Exhibition, had also been sponsored by the Banco Central Hispano. The Banco Hispano Americano was the rst to be linked to Expo 92, opening an of ce on Isla de la Cartuja, and could use a logo related to the monastery as a symbol of its activities in the Exhibition. His sponsorship was also made in support of the Pavilion of the XV Century and the exhibition << Art and culture around 1492 >>.

The ILO's Honor Day, UNHCR and the Human Rights Committee are celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on April 24, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - April 24, 1992.

Pavilion of the UN. That day was celebrated in the UN Pavilion (Organization of the United Nations) on Labor Day and on the human rights of immigrant workers, under the theme "Migration, Right to Work and Right to Asylum". There are three organizations that look after the interests of these workers: the ILO, UNHCR and the United Nations Center for Human Rights .

International Labor Organization (ILO). This was the rst of the ve days of honor that the UN Pavilion planned to hold during the six months of the Universal Exhibition. For the ceremony of honor day came, among others, Sahrawi children, refugees in Spain, so our country was playing an important role within these international organizations and should be because Spain had not forgotten its history of migration.

For Manuel Simรณn Velasco, director of the ILO in Spain, the philosophy of the Organization was added in three sections: struggle because there is a union between the unions, employers and administrations; a policy of economic development towards the countries that were in the process of development: and a social recovery of them. The motto of the Pavilion of the United Nations in the Universal Exhibition, of which UNESCO assumed the coordination to create a better world. The pavilion opened its doors the next day to the public.

Human Rights Committee. An extraterrestrial served as guide to the visitor, who after descending to the planet earth joined in the sadness before the extension of the human misery, for later, to later recover the hope when seeing the work that the organizations of the UN were carrying out.

The International Olympic Committee Honor Day is celebrated at Expo 92 in Seville. Posted on May 10, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 10, 1992.

Poster International Olympic Committee Seville'92. Both the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), and the General Commissioner of the Pavilion, Carlos Ferret Salat , and the president of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch , had shown their support for the Universal Exhibition of Seville re ected in the construction of a pavilion , where its main objective was, among other activities, to link sports to culture. In the decision to take the International Olympic Committee to Expo 92 with its own pavilion, the personal efforts of Samaranch and Ferret Salat were decisive. It was not just a question of overcoming the idea of taking the IOC out of its usual environment, but of approving the investment necessary to lift the building and ll it with content.

Pavilion of the International Olympic Committee on the Island of the Cartuja. The construction had cost about four hundred million of the old pesetas and the contents and activities raised this gure to add the eight hundred. For the rst time in its history, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was represented at a Universal Exposition. And also, for the rst time, the Olympic ame during some Games burned in a city other than the headquarters.

Olympic ag. During the six months of the Universal Exhibition, the pavilion aimed to show the connection between sport and culture, exhibiting works of art by Salvador Dalí, Tapies, Rodin and the Andalusian sculptor Miguel Berrocal . The Olympic Games of antiquity, the renewal and evolution of the modern, the Summer and Winter Games, with samples of which were to be held since then, Barcelona 92, Lillehammer 94, Atlanta 96 and Nagano 98 , were some of their content

Main entrance of the IOC Pavilion at Expo 92. The pavilion of the International Olympic Committee was designed by the Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez , it was located between the lake and the Guadalquivir Gardens, a pavilion inspired by a Greek temple, as an allusion to the origins of Olympism, which combined the classical forms with elements avant-garde. At the entrance to the pavilion was placed a sculpture of an athlete's torso, work of the Andalusian artist, Miguel Berrocal . << Citius, altius, fortius >>, the motto of Olympism, was the name that had been given to sculpture.

Juan Antonio Samaranch next to the work of the sculptor Berrocal at the entrance of the pavilion. Also on the outskirts of the pavilion, in the middle of a garden and before a large staircase, the cauldron was placed where the Olympic ame burned.

Olympic cauldron during Expo 92. (It is currently in the Olympic roundabout next to the Alamillo bridge). The rst exhibition hall of the pavilion was devoted, almost exclusively, to the exhibition of works of art. As soon as the interior of the building was accessed, the public could contemplate a mural by Antoni Tapies representing an Olympic allegory.

Mural by Antoni Tapies. On the left side a Roman mosaic with chariot scenes was placed, from the Archaeological Museum of Barcelona . The Archaeological Museum of Seville provided an athlete's torso, a fragment of a Roman sculpture from the 2nd century from Italica. And nally, from the Olympic Museum in Lausanne two Greek vases decorated with black gures and a collection of torches from 1936 to 1988 had been exhibited.

Pieces of the Archaeological Museums of Seville and Barcelona. On the right side of the pavilion was symbolized the Olympism and its projection to the future with the oil of Salvador DalĂ << The Cosmic Athlete >>, while the second section of the pavilion was dedicated to the next venues of the Summer and Winter Games.

Salvador DalĂ <> inside the IOC Pavilion at Expo 92. Barcelona 92 , had installed an exhibition on both sides where he showed the preparation of the Olympic Games that took place in Spain that year, as well as projecting through this exhibition the impact, development and spirit of the city in the organization of these Games.

Barcelona 92 shows inside the pavilion. The gure of Cobi , the model of the entrance of the Montjuic stadium and photographs of the Palace of Sant Jordi, were also part of the exhibition. The last exhibition area of the pavilion was dedicated to Coca Cola , the sponsor company linked to the Olympic Games since the 20th century and which offered in the pavilion through 25 three-minute audiovisual screens on different sports events, in addition to the most important events held at the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Interior International Olympic pavilion. Both the IOC president, Juan Antonio Samaranch, and the general curator of Expo 92, Emilio Cassinello, highlighted on the IOC Honor Day that it was the rst time that the high-level body participated in a universal exhibition the Sevillian Samaranch stressed that with the IOC pavilion in the venue, they joined the Barcelona Games with the Expo in Seville, as the start of the centennial celebrations of the movement that would culminate in 1994.

The Olympic rings crowned the roof of the pavilion during Expo 92.

For Samaranch, Expo 92 was the best example of the indispensable union of all peoples, so necessary for the progress of humanity, in the same way that the Olympic movement tends to favor education and the peaceful development of society. save

The National Day of Belgium is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 14, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 14, 1992.

Belgium Pavilion. Belgium , in its presence at Expo 92, put great emphasis on its historical link with Spain, which dated back to the reign of Charles V and continued in our days through Queen Fabiola, a Spanish national, and King Baldwin, great lovers of our country. On the occasion of that National Day of Belgium , the Princes of Liège had moved to Seville to preside over the ceremonial events of this day that we remember.

Views of the Belgium Pavilion. The Belgian pavilion was located on the Avenue of Europe, where Belgium was presented and, speci cally, Brussels as a communications center and seat of the government of the European Community which justi ed its position as the capital of Europe. The presence of Belgium at the Expo was a great adventure that had been possible thanks to the efforts of seven of cial sponsors and more than thirty European companies from which they had received support.

Flag of Belgium. The building of the pavilion was distinguished by its immaculate awnings, only adorned by the colors, black, red and yellow of the ag of Belgium. Under the closed and motionless appearance of this building, consisting of its four sides of blades covered with a parasol fabric to combat the high temperatures of this city, there was a large open space that highlighted the materials of this country.

Belgium in Expo 92. Through the main entrance, the visitor found himself with the courtyard of three thousand six hundred square meters, where they were greeted by beautiful Belgian hostesses dressed in colorful blouses and orange skirts. On the threshold of the patio there was a ower festival, a stage and an example of works of art, with an installation by Marie-Jo La Fontaine .

Interior Belgian ag. At a RTT kiosk, Belgian participation in the development of telecommunications was shown, reminding everyone that telephone calls between Moscow and Washington were traveling through Brussels. This tour was a circuit for visitors who wanted to know in twenty minutes the typical Belgian products such as pralines, glass, lace, and go out to observe " the ear of Servais " animation documentary. But the treasures of this pavilion were inside a black box that was accessed by climbing an escalator twenty- ve meters long and fourteen meters of altitude. The visitor entered a blue universe, designed to enhance the works exhibited in the showcases, decorated by interior designer Frans Van Praet. The National Day of Bulgaria is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 24, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 24, 1992.

Bulgarian pavilion. For the third time in its history, Bulgaria participated in a Universal Exhibition. The rst was that of Chicago, in 1893, and the second that of Osaka, in 1970. Bulgaria celebrated that day its national day at the Universal Exposition of Seville with the presence of its Bulgarian president, Yelio Yelev . This country despite the vicissitudes it had suffered throughout its thirteen centuries of history, had managed to preserve and develop its culture without detaching itself from European and world civilization. To record this, Expo 92 presented the best of its historical development, from the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet by the hands of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the years 855-860 until the discoveries in 1972 of the oldest gold in the world in the Necropolis of Varna and in 1924 the golden treasure of Valchitran, one of the most valuable of Thrace.

Flag of Bulgaria. The Spanish government nanced the construction of the Bulgarian pavilion that was presented in Seville under the slogans: << Bulgaria as a country of civilizations >> and << Bulgaria, a country with an unbreakable spirit >>, which had the purpose of demonstrating to the whole world that It was a country that had managed to keep its idiosyncrasy intact despite the vicissitudes it has had to from the beginning of its existence. The Bulgarian pavilion was located near Avenue 5, between the pavilions of Poland and Chile, with an exhibition area of about 300 square meters. It showed the oldest gold in the world, discovered in the necropolis of Varna: part of the golden treasure of Valchitrรกn; original icons belonging to the Orthodox school; a collection of thirteen oil paintings by Vladimir Dimitrov , the master, Bulgarian painter of the 20th century and ten panels with Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabets.

Bulgaria shared pavilion with Poland. The exhibition site was visited by some 4,000 people a day, was continuously attended by two archaeologists, one in charge of the icons and another of the treasures, which offered information about the exhibitions to anyone who required it. To the left of the exhibition hall was a collection of 16 orthodox icons from ancient Bulgaria, representing different periods and artistic schools. The tour of the Bulgarian pavilion was complemented by a display of ten panels with Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabets. Presiding this sample was an icon of the saints Cyril and Methodius , creators of the Slavic script. The tour through the exhibition area ended with a screening of a video every two hours about life in Bulgaria: its customs, folklore and tourism. The commissioner of the Universal Exhibition of Seville, Emilio Cassinello, received before the road that led to the Royal pavilion the Bulgarian delegation, headed by the president of this Republic, Yelio Yelev, who signed in the honor book of the Royal pavilion. The Bulgarian president said during his speeches at the Palenque during the national day of his country, that the presence of Bulgaria at the Expo 92 in Seville was nothing causal. It was an expression of the well-deserved place of the Bulgarian people in the community of the towns and a sample of the contribution of the Bulgarian genius to the palette of the human culture and civilization.

Bulgarian Pavilion at Expo 92. Yelev stressed that the day of Bulgaria at the Expo coincided with the celebration in his country of the national day of Slavic writing and Bulgarian culture and with the day of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The day of Bulgaria in the Universal Exhibition ended with various shows that went from the folkloric dances in the Palenque to the performances of mimes and a Bulgarian dance on embers in the 4th avenue of the enclosure. save

The National Day of Czechoslovakia is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 20, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 20, 1992.

Czechoslovakia Pavilion. Czechoslovakia was living that day in Seville the commemoration of its National Day, chaired by the Vice President of the Czechoslovak Government, Jozef Miklosko . The countries of Eastern Europe, after ending communist totalitarianism lived during that 1992 the rst years of democracy, with a regime of the Federal Republic. Those in charge of the Czechoslovak pavilion at Expo 92 saw from the beginning the need for the political, economic and cultural problems and objectives that the country was experiencing not to be the main one of their participation.

Flag of Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic. The Czech and Slovak Federal Republic (as it could be read at the entrance of the pavilion), decided to be in Seville with a typical and traditional product, such as glass, which they can represent successfully, without having to pretend. Everyone has ever heard of the Bohemian crystal . The glass of Czechoslovakia represented contemporary creation a precious set of values. The unique way of treatment and design of the work is the unmistakable stamp of this country of origin. A group of writers, artists and plastics worked on the artistic presentation of the contents of the pavilion, under the orders of Professor Vratislav Novรกk.

Czechoslovakia Pavilion during Expo 92. Czech and Slovak artists were also present beyond their pavilion, with two exhibitions in the Arts pavilion. The exhibition presented works of different plastic genres signed by authors of different opinions and belonging to different generations. The exhibition in its entirety allowed to understand the variety of artistic programs on the one hand and, on the other, the af nity of contemporary Czech and Slovak artistic art. The exhibition included the most outstanding gures of contemporary Czech art, among them Olbram Zoubeck , Vรกclav Bostik , Vladimir Maly , etc.

Detail of the gate of the Czechoslovak pavilion years after the Universal Exhibition. The Czechoslovak pavilion at the Expo was located on Avenida de las Palmeras, next to the Palenque, its outer cover was formed by layers of wire cloth separated horizontally by wooden elements. The pavilion had the shape of a prism, with a plane of twenty- ve by thirty-nine meters, based on a project of neofunctionalist conception. Martin Nemec and Jan Stempel, architects of the pavilion, conceived a building that offered traits related to the traditions of poetic functionalism, an important and exceptional style in the ante-war history of Czechoslovak architecture. The visitor climbed the escalator located in large letters where you could read "Czech and Slovak Federative Republic"; next to the entrance of what was going to make an authentic spiritual temple.

The Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. The motto of the pavilion was Man, stop! Where you could live a few minutes in a deep emotional impression. The Czechoslovaks invited the visitor to live with them for a few minutes the inner feeling of having been distracted from real life, thanks to a show of lights, shadows and sounds. The exhibition space was an enclosure with a viewpoint that housed the spectacle of day and night, symbol of the eternal cycle of life where the protagonist is glass in motion. The exhibition offered the abstract and suggestive representation of the life of the human being, through extensive sculptures of glass, crystal tables, sound, lights, effects of colors, metal structures, strings and candles, under the melody of Michal Pavlicek . At the entrance of the pavilion the tourist of ce was located where it offered the visitor a variety of information about the wonders of Czechoslovakia.

Exterior view Czechoslovakia pavilion. In the welcome speech of the national day of Czechoslovakia, the Commissioner of the Exhibition, Emilo Cassinello highlighted the new image of this country and said that Czechoslovakia today would not be the same as that of October 13. The events were chaired by the Czech Vice President Josef Miklosko . The general commissar of Expo'92 expressed in his words of welcome in the strict sense of the Czechoslovakian people, that he had managed to stand up against the pressures of the powers that surrounded them. Cassinello also highlighted the contents of this pavilion, which he said that creativity had been fully manifested in the game that had been given to the glass of Bohemia himself responsible for the pavilion of Czechoslovakia, Miroslav Galuska, commented in the Palenque that Spaniards are for us the great spiritual power of the world, therefore, what this country had achieved meant a way of union between Spain and Czechoslovakia. save

Pavilion of France. France celebrated its National Day at the Expo, marked mainly by the visit of the President of the French Republic, Francois Mitterrand , to Seville. This country had achieved with its pavilion and its programs of cultural activities inside and outside the enclosure, to be one of the great protagonists of the Universal Exposition of 1992. Seville lived that day a French day, thanks to artistic performances, concerts, lm screenings, ballets and paintings that were held on the occasion of the national day of our neighbors, border and also with its pavilion on the premises.

Flag of France. France is one of the nations that have more experience in the eld of exhibitions, not in vain its most emblematic building, the Eiffel Tower, was built for a universal exhibition. In Seville they left as a permanent legacy a building that surprises at rst sight even 25 years after the Sevillian Exhibition, a building without walls, since under its << Sky >> you have to go down to the << well >> of images to nd its content.

Well of the images. The day of honor of France began with the passage of the French Air Patrol and its Spanish counterpart, the Patrol Eagle, who drew in the sky of Seville the colors of the two national ags: blue, white, red and yellow. The of cial ceremony began around 11:00 in the Palenque, decorated with veils of blue, red and white colors by the artist Olivier OrĂŠ ce. The Orchester de Paris performed three excerpts from Hector Berlioz's Fantastic Symphony, directed by Seymon Bychkov.

Pavilion of France. The president of the French Republic, Francois Mitterrand, visited the pavilion around twelve o'clock in the morning, at which time 100 people who worked in the pavilion were at the President's disposal. Throughout the national day of France at Expo 92, a vertical dance performance created for the occasion by the Roc in Lichen Company was repeated in front of the mirror building. Everything reminded France on that National Day in the enclosure, or the French themselves were in charge of remembering it, Mitterrand's tour of the Expo continued with a visit to the French pavilion.

Pavilion of France. Both the general commissioner of the Expo 92 and the head of the French delegation in the Show, Emilio Cassinello and Gerard Delage, respectively, paid tribute to France as the alma mater of the universal exhibitions in their of cial speeches at the Palenque, the only ones pronounced on the honor day of the neighboring country.

Pavilion of France. The reference of Cassinello was explicit and emphatic from the rst line of his speech in which he would af rm that all those who have had the audacity to organize a universal exhibition have learned the arts of a model created in France. save

The National Day of Germany is celebrated at the Universal Exhibition of Seville. Posted on May 23, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 23, 1992.

German pavilion at Expo 92. Germany celebrated that day its National Day at the Universal Exposition of 1992, where it was presented to the world, after fty-two years, as a single country. The president of the Federal Republic of Germany, Richard Von Weizsacker , arrived in Seville that day to represent his country in ceremonial and cultural events to commemorate his Day of Honor on the Island of the Cartuja. In the message from the President of the Federal Republic of Germany that was included in the pavilion's of cial book, Weizsacker highlighted the special responsibility of Germany, together with the other countries, to maintain peace and future progress in the world in which we live.

Flag of Germany. "We hope that the Expo 92 will contribute to deepen the peaceful cooperation of all humanity and constitute a new step towards mutual understanding of the peoples," said Weizsacker. The president also made reference to the fact that the contribution of the RFA amortized the new idea that we have today about the purpose of the universal exhibitions of the present and that Seville would lead later in all the following Exhibitions models. The Spanish-German relations had a long and positive tradition, dating back to the era of the Discoveries, when in the kingdom of Charles V, where the sun never set, both countries were part of a community for some time.

German pavilion at nightfall.

The German pavilion offered in Seville an overview of the German reality in all its diversity, re ecting the past, the present and the future. One of the claims of the German pavilion was the memory of the famous Berlin Wall, since it was not necessary to travel to this city to see the remains of the wall that at the end of the Second War broke the heart of the city in two and divided families and shocked the whole world. There was no visitor at the Expo who did not pass through the German pavilion without taking a photo in front of this already symbolic wall of discord.

Berlin Wall in the German Pavilion, now you can visit it in Magic Island Park. The German pavilion was one of the biggest attractions of the Avenida de Europa at Expo 92, since its pavilion was formed by an elliptical roof with dimensions similar to those of a football eld. Leaning on a mast fty- ve meters high and covering the surface of the pavilion, extended the ellipse of the roof of shadow, which protected the pavilion of the Sevillian sun. The faรงade was highlighted by its transparent curtain, a network of corrugated steel ropes, on which polycarbonate plates had been xed. This glass curtain served as a link between the exterior and interior, and let pass the light that prevails in Seville. In the outer space of the pavilion was a gigantic merry-go-round of buffoons, rogues and adventurers, representing gures of German literature: Don Juan, Dr. Fausto, Don Quixote, Sancho Panza, Mother Courage and Till Eulenspiegel. This merry-go-round had been made by an artistic group from Berlin, who managed to capture the attention of the visitors by forming a carefree chorus of puppets that moved mixing different eras and cultures.

Merry-go-rounds of buffoons, rogues and adventurers. << Visions and Impressions >> was the theme chosen by the German pavilion, with which he wanted to underline the past, present and the conjugated future in an entertaining way, under four different themes: City and urban life, Nature and the environment, Discoveries and inventions and The dream of ying.

Detail of the facade of the Germany pavilion. Just at the entrance of the pavilion the visitor could nd one of his biggest attractions of the contents of this pavilion: the original remains of the Berlin Wall. Among the thousands of graf ti and graf ti of the Wall highlighted one with blue and white letters where you could read << No Europe Whitout Berlin >>, emphasizing the importance of uni ed Germany in the European Community.

Brandenburg in Expo 92. The visitor continued on his way to the Brandenburg Gate, dis gured by expressive means that made it almost transparent. Through it could be seen a circular horizon with collages representing towers like Babel, the Giralda, and skyscrapers. In the German pavilion, the topic of environmental protection, symbolized by a tree, was treated with special relevance, transforming it from a radiant green to a sad gray that made it languish.

Detail of the German ag tree. The tree, made of cardboard, buried its roots in the garbage of the cities. It was inside a ten meter high glass cube, totally hermetic, that symbolized our environment that needed to be protected. Â Before going to the area that housed the exhibition of Discoveries and inventions, the visitor had to keep a small queue to enter the Box of illusions, where he could see images projected on all the walls of the cube. Â In the exhibition of the Discoveries and Inventions, the visitors went crossing a footbridge that went underneath the airplane of Lienthal and other ying objects of the past. The visitor entered the Zeppelin LZ 127, which on its inaugural ight of the airline between Germany and South America stopped in Seville, on the occasion of the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929.

German ight contraption. This area showed four simultaneous projection surfaces that showed the historical facets of German aviation.

Terrace detail of the Germany pavilion. The route continued through a ramp leading to the restaurant terrace << Berlin >> where the visitor could taste a varied selection of dishes à la carte, which highlighted the Frankfurter Sausages. save

The National Day of Guatemala is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 27, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 27, 1992.

Guatemala was located in the Plaza de AmĂŠrica Pavilion. Guatemala , a country where caudillismo has traditionally prevailed, and which sought the path of freedom like other countries in the Americas, celebrated that day its national day at the Universal Exposition of Seville. Its president, Jorge Serrano ElĂas , moved to Seville to commemorate it. The Land of Eternal Spring, Guatemala, transported the visitor at Expo 92 through the time tunnel to the Mayan civilization. A tour of the Guatemalan pavilion showed how this enigmatic town was born, developed and advanced scienti cally and culturally. The Mayans developed a civilization based on complex social and political structures, used a system of hieroglyphic writing and entered the eld of science, especially in mathematics and astronomy.

Flag of Guatemala. The facade of a Mayan temple constituted the entrance of the Guatemala pavilion. The right end of the facade represented the structure that it had when it was built in its origins. The left side appeared deteriorated and the stones interlaced with vegetation. In this way it was intended to symbolize the passage of time. As a testimony to the worship of the gods that kept the Mayan people crowned the temple great masks of the god Shack, << God of rain >>.

Guatemalan Pavilion The rst vision of the visitor to reach the pavilion of Guatemala, located in the joint pavilion of Plaza de América, was a signi cant dedication of the country's president, Jorge Serrano Elías: << Peace is not only the absence of war but the whole of conditions that allow man to live with dignity without anguish and fear >>.

Entrance pavilion of Guatemala. No less interesting were the stelae, stone monoliths carved with inscriptions about the most important events in the history of the Mayan civilization. The stelas were part of the contents of the Guatemalan pavilion. Mayan mathematics had a reserved space in the Guatemalan pavilion. The Mayans counted in scores, that is, twenty in twenty, instead of one in one. They performed mathematical operations through points, bars and heads of deities, placed in ascending columns. Maize, a fundamental food in the life of the Maya, had also been given a space, as well as writing and astronomy. The Maya knew the most visible stars and calculated their cycles, thus constructing the solar calendar and the ritual. The 365-day solar year is one of the greatest achievements of this civilization. In the center of the Guatemalan pavilion was a collection of pieces from the archaeological museum of Guatemala: vessels, plates and jade objects. The tour of the rst oor of the pavilion ended with a display of hand-made articles by Guatemalan artisans with baked clay, bread crumbs, wood or waist looms. The president of Guatemala, Jorge Serrano, described the Universal Exhibition of Seville as the universal engine of technological and cultural development.

Interior Pabellón de Guatemala. The general curator of Expo 92, Emilio Cassinello stressed that Spain, in the Universal Exposition, recognized the merit and value of indigenous culture, not as a museum piece but as a living voice that demanded a collective response in respect and in the dialogue. save

The National Day of Haiti is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 18, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 18, 1992.

Haiti Pavilion in Plaza de América. The Republic of Haiti is one of the thirteen countries that form the Insular America, Antilles or Islands of the Caribbean Sea, one of the thirty- ve of the American continent. Its capital and most populated city is Port-au-Prince . Haiti celebrated that day its national day at Expo 92, a country located in the central zone of the Antilles, in the western third of the island of Hispaniola, bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by the Dominican Republic, the other country located on the island of Hispaniola, on the south by the Caribbean Sea and on the west by Paso de los Vientos, which separates Cuba.

Flag of Haiti. The name of Haiti comes from Arawak, the language of the native inhabitants of the island, and means << mountain land >>. This name was given to the western part of the island by the ancient Taíno settlers, which is where this republic is located. When Columbus took possession of the island in 1492, he called it " The Spanish Island" . The name Haiti was adopted by the Haitian revolutionary Jean-Jacques Dessalines as the of cial name after the independence of Saint-Domingue, as a tribute to the indigenous ancestors.

Plaza of America. Haiti showed within its pavilion in Plaza de America the three cultural groups that forged its history, African, European and pre-Columbian cultures. The central axis of his exhibitions was the anchor of the caravel << Santa María >>, from the Museum of Port-au-Prince. The rites of voodoo were also a demonstration in this pavilion, initiatory rites, voodoo with dance samples.

Plaza of America. The Haiti Pavilion had an area of 250 square meters and was located on the ground oor of Plaza de América, the commissioner of the Haitian participation was Jean Claude Gaston Volcy. save

The National Day of Holland is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 7, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 07, 1992.

Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of Holland in the honors of her country (ABC Photography). With the presence of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of Holland , that day was celebrated at the Universal Exhibition of Seville on National Day of Holland . She was the rst representative of the European Monarchies that went through the Expo. To participate in the Universal Exhibition, the Holland-Seville Foundation 1992 was constituted in 1988. It was nanced in two thirds by the Government and the rest by private sponsors. The Dutch budget was about nineteen hundred million pesetas old.

Netherland's ag. The most striking element of the Dutch participation was its own building, which presented an innovative cooling system called << desert cooling >>. The team formed by Peter Trimp, Fred Temme, Moshe Zwarts and Rein Jansma had designed it.

Holland Pavilion (Photography Stefaan & Eric). The building was completely transparent and looked, from inside and from outside, an open place with several oors of height. The coating was made of a synthetic fabric, on the outside of which water slid continually to such an extent that the stewardesses covered the visitors on many occasions with umbrellas when they entered and left. The evaporation of the water demanded heat energy from the interior, cooling it. The system caused a drop in temperature of about ve degrees. The walls of this unique pavilion were joined with the fabric that covered the upper part to form air pockets.

Holland pavilion. After the Expo, the Dutch pavilion was moved and used for several years as part of the headquarters of Archeon Archaeological Theme Park, in the town of Alphen aan der Rijn. Visitors roamed the pavilion by automatic staircases. The connection with the upper platforms was made by three multimedia tunnels, in which it was necessary to move with mechanical tapes while numerous messages were received in unison through television monitors.

Interior Netherlands Pavilion. (Photography Stefaan & Eric). The contents were divided into three sections: water , as an inseparable element to the country; the earth , which gives way to economy and technology, and culture . The pavilion received twice a week fresh owers brought from the Netherlands. The Dutch pavilion also had spaces reserved for beer and its famous cheeses. Queen Beatriz de Holanda said during her visit to Expo 92 that the exhibition was a constant surprise, after touring an area of the site during the rst part of her visit to mark the celebration of her country's honor day, who came accompanied by Prince Claus and by the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Yvonne van Rooy, who would be in charge of the of cial presentation of the activities organized by the Dutch pavilion on the national day.

Entrance to the Netherlands Pavilion. The general commissioner, Emilio Cassinello , praised the simplicity of the Dutch Royal House that throughout the National Day of the country toured accompanied by a small delegation, in which there was no member of the Spanish royal house. Cassinello commented on the Queen of Holland, who is a quiet Majesty with whom it was nice to visit the site. The commissioner did not hide the satisfaction for the sense of tolerance and few demands of the Dutch Royal House that toured his pavilion giving samples of complacency and courtesy to all who were in the room.

The National Day of Israel is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 11, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 11, 1992.

Pavilion of Israel. On this day the national day of Israel was celebrated , a state of special connotations. After several doubts about his presence in the Show, the Israeli government had built for the event a tent or " hoel" , which evoked the origin of the Jewish people and its shape reminded the Shrine of the Book of Jerusalem , which contains the scrolls of the Dead Sea. Upon entering the Israel Pavilion, an audiovisual projection, accompanied by a system of light and sound, envelops the visitor, who forced him to become an integral part of the experience and guided him during the sixteen minutes of the program. The projection re ected 4,000 years of history of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.

Flag of Israel. The year of the Discovery of America was also characterized by the end of the coexistence of three cultures, motivated by the conquest of the kingdom of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs and the decision of these to expel the Jews who did not want to convert to the Christian faith. The richness of the culture of the Spanish Jews marked the guidelines of life for the entire Jewish world and left a deep mark still in force.

Entrance Pavilion of Israel. The most important Jewish community was founded in Sefarad, which established a model of life where there was self-government and the interpretation of Talmudic laws. The Jewish neighborhoods in Spain became important.

Pavilion of Israel. In our country lived and worked writers, thinkers, talmudistas and men of science that contributed to enrich the universal culture of his time.

Visitors wait to enter the pavilion. Once introduced inside the pavilion the visitor, after passing a rigorous security control, was immersed in the Israeli "hoel"; Jewish music, and a space in gloom, was the environment that each visitor received, with a projection of about three thousand slides for fty projectors on the different screens, some in the form of candles, in which a vision was offered of this town, with references to its past and its vision of the future.

Israel Pavilion during Expo 92. Israel, pointed from its pavilion, that pursued with this presence at the Expo, an essential objective, << show the journey of an ancient people, with a legacy, to become a modern and young, very dynamic, aspiring to peace >>. But the Israeli presence in the Universal Exposition of Seville did not end with this pavilion. The day of honor to this country had a series of of cial events with members of the Jewish Government. Throughout this day, it was possible to see, through the enclosure of the Island of the Cartuja, Israeli dances and dances that was present in this day with two dance groups that were present both in the Palenque stage and in different streets of the enclosure during all the national day Among the events organized by Israel on the occasion of its national day, highlighted the performance of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jerusalem , led by Zubin Mehta , at the Teatro de la Maestranza. save

The National Day of Jordan is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 25, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 25, 1992.

Prince Hassan bin Talal and Princess Sarvath on their arrival at the Island of the Cartuja. SAR Hassan bin Talal , who during those years occupied the position of Crown Prince of Jordan and Princess Sarvath were in Seville that day to preside over the ceremonial and cultural events in honor of Jordan on its national day at the Universal Exposition of Seville. The wish of Jordan, one of the rst countries to accept the invitation to participate in the Expo, came from the rm conviction that cultural exchange not only enriched cultures, but also would help peace by allowing people they went through cultural barriers, which sometimes were obstacles to mutual understanding.

Flag of Jordan Jordan is the place where the East begins. It is the crossing between the Middle East and the three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. Its geographical position is a factor that has conditioned its history; Jordan always existed as a commercial center and communication of the great cultures of the Old World; Egyptian, Assyrian, Mesopotamian, Byzantine and the Islamic kingdom. Jordan is a unique and blessed country of the Old and New Testaments, as well as the early days of Islam. The visitor on his tour of the Jordanian pavilion would nd a copy of the mosaic that represents the oldest map of the Holy Land and on the other side a huge model that reproduced the city of Petra.

Arabic Countries Pavilion. One of the attractions of the pavilion was the pink city almost as old as time. Petra is a Nabataean city that was carved into the cliffs of pink rocks in an almost inaccessible area. The rst inhabitants of this tourist center were an Arab-Semitic tribe from the north of Arabia, which settled there in 800 BC. Among the mosaics exhibited in the pavilion, an original one, from the Church of the Apostles, decorated in 578 AD by the musiravian artist Salamanios, stood out. This mosaic presents the personi cation of the sea: the marine goddess Thalassa, according to the inscription in Greek.

Jordan in the Pavilion of the Arab Countries. Jordan is a country full of sites, monuments and tools that represent millennia of civilizations and cultures that enriched these lands, which date back to the beginning of Humanity, more than a million years ago. The tools present the rst art. The tour of the pavilion of Jordan at the Expo was a compendium of these cultures and civilizations that settled in the northeastern and southern Jordan, brewing rock art, trade, the domain of ceramics. A display case showed ceramic objects and their history of this technique, which was invented in the Middle East around 5,500 BC; Among the objects were examples of ancient ceramics from Jordan, from the rst produced by the Neolithic man, to the bronze age, to the ultra- ne Nabatean, Roman and Byzantine pottery.

Pavilion of the Arab Countries during Expo 92. In the Jordan pavilion there was a typical store of any Jordanian city, made of wood, where any visitor could buy bronze jars for Jordanian coffee, colored glassware, ornaments, bags, etc. The clothing characteristic of the Jordanian people was also present in the pavilion with six mannequins dressed in silk embroidery, shiny striped satins or Arab tunics. The Commissioner of the Expo, Emilio Cassinello said that day during the national day of Jordan, that this country was getting a rich record for the active search for peace, also called the celebration of 92 a good re ection of all changes.

Postcard and stamp from Jordan during Expo 92. The Prince of Jordan, Hassan Bin Talal, whose speech began and ended in Spanish, had words of encouragement for those responsible for the Show of 92 << It is important to know how to do good things in bad and dif cult times >>. Also, the representative of the Jordanian royal house opened his speech making reference to the Spanish poet Antonio Machado, stating that if the traveler makes the way to walk, at the Universal Exhibition of Seville has begun a new and beautiful journey to the future. save

The National Day of Luxembourg is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 13, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 13, 1992.

Luxembourg Pavilion during Expo 92. The national day of Luxembourg , small central European country, was marked by the presence of their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke John and the Grand Duchess Jose na-Carlota . The Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo 92 was located at the con uence of Avenida de Europa and Paseo Oeste. A structure in the shape of a cube, made of steel and glass, nineteen meters high and removable, made up one of the smallest pavilions of the Exhibition (a thousand square meters), as a small state that it represents.

Flag of Luxembourg. The space was dominated by an armillary sphere in movement, a video that explains the importance of the steel industry and a cafeteria where typical tapas of the nation could be tasted. To combine tradition and modernity had been the purpose of the contents presented by Luxembourg. The Luxembourg pavilion tried to show a country halfway between the Latin and the Germanic world. It offered a portrait of its landscapes and its inhabitants. The pavilion recalled its European vocation, its steel tradition and its importance in the audiovisual eld.

Logo Pavilion of Luxembourg. At the entrance surprised, in addition to diffuse lights, a large rotating armillary sphere that gave off a faint light and bluish color. This sphere symbolized the state of Luxembourg as a place of con uence of a multitude of roads and cultures.

Armillary sphere inside the Luxembourg Pavilion. The visit to the pavilion began on the second oor, which was accessed by a transparent elevator that allowed to see the great sphere in all its dimension. In the highest part was the cafeteria, a place conceived as a futuristic scenario. The tables and stools, in the shape of an inverted cone, allowed to have a drink while a video was projected. The images left the tables showed luxemburgueses landscapes that were rolled from a balloon and that could be contemplated as if one were in the heights.

Cafeteria tables Pavilion of Luxembourg. It began the descent of the pavilion through a ramp following a snaking line of green phosphorescent. The road was dotted with small lights that simulated the stars. The rest, tenebrous darkness, the rst thing that was seen was a representation of an illumination of the old abbey of Echternach, contrasted with images of today.

Interior Luxembourg Pavilion. At the exit was the shop, where you could buy, if you wished, a tea set or any other piece of porcelain from Villeroy et Boch and have the same dishes at home as some of the best Sevillian restaurants.

Shop area of the Luxembourg Pavilion. The visit of the pavilion lasted ten minutes, which lasted twenty- ve minutes if one counted the time spent in viewing the contents of the computers. The Greater County of Luxembourg tried to offer its ag, at the gates of a Europe without borders, a clear idea of its culture as a country that had brought together the different elements of its identity in contact with foreigners, in the Spanish Renaissance or the Austrian presence, but that took its own charter of nature and played an important role in the con guration of modern Europe.

Luxembourg pavilion during the night at Expo 92. The Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg highlighted during the national day of his country, that the Seville exhibition embodied the vision of the world of the year 2000, re ecting harmony, dynamism and creativity. The European representative stressed that with their modest contribution they had wanted to participate in this adventure of the world city that symbolized Expo'92.

The Grand Dukes of the Duchy of Luxembourg, Jean and Jose na Charlotte visiting the pavilion that day. The act of honor began with the meeting on the Royal Road of the representatives, who were received by the General Head of the Southern Military Region, Juan Pérez Crusell before the Grand Dukes of the Dukedom, Jean and Jose na Charlotte who attended the hoisting of the respective ags where later the delegation signed in the Book of Honor in the Royal Pavilion.

Signature in the Book of Honor of Expo 92 located in the royal chapel of the Monastery of La Cartuja. Immediately after, the delegation moved to Palenque, where the interventions of the national day of Luxembourg took place.

The National Day of Norway is celebrated at Expo 92. Posted on May 22, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 22, 1992.

Norwegian Pavilion at Expo 92. Norway celebrated its National Day in Expo with the presence of SS.MM, King Harald V and Queen Sonia . This was the third country to sign the formal contract for participation in Expo 92. The Commissioner-General, Haakon W. Freihow , pointed out from the beginning Norway's interest in showing the ability to be a large part of Europe. Norway was a serious contributor to the effort to ensure a better and cleaner world for our children. The Norwegian State allocated 1,500 million pesetas for the participation of its country in the Universal Exposition. Norway was present in Seville beyond its pavilion and the Expo. Seville was the tenth city that was twinned with Oslo thanks to the present of the Norwegian tree of the species << Picea Abies >>, planted and cared for in the Maria Luisa Park in December 1991.

Flag of Norway. The Norwegian pavilion was located on Avenida de las Palmeras, next to the Finnish pavilion, and was noted for its structure of its tube-shaped building. The course of this pavilion was thirteen minutes and focused on the multimedia show that explains the importance of water for Norway.

Logo Pavilion of Norway. The whole Norwegian enclosure was covered by a pond, simulating a huge aluminum receptacle, lled with water and raised one meter above the ground. The portico of ice emerged from the pond, in a marine environment, inside which the walls were covered with ice as bright as steel, the result of an advanced

freezing technique. The ice was mixed with salt, and was maintained thanks to a computer that watered it little by little at a temperature of thirty- ve degrees centigrade below zero, so that it would remain seventeen centimeters thick.

Interior Norway pavilion. The National Day of Paraguay is celebrated in Expo 92. Posted on May 15, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 15, 1992.

Pavilion of Paraguay in Expo 92. Paraguay was the rst of the Ibero-American countries that celebrated its national day festivity in the precincts of the Universal Exhibition of Seville, and also celebrated its declaration of independence on that date. His participation in Expo 92 was not very strong economically, like other American countries, which had counted on the help of the Spanish Government.

Paraguay Flag In the words of the deputy curator of the Paraguay Pavilion, Pilar Rodríguez , " our presence in the Universal Exposition symbolized our democratic transparency today after having left behind the many years of submission to a dictatorship that made it impossible for us to access the civilized world. It was necessary to recover the lost time and, nothing better for it than to be present in this Universal Exhibition >>.

Plaza of America. During those days, Paraguay offered a sample of its culture and folklore with the performances of Terceto Ñamandú , Vocal Dos group , Los Tres Sudamericanos , the folkloric folkloric dance and band , the South American Ballet of Helio Seraf ni , Nicolás Caballero , Gloria del Paraguay and Rolando Ojeda .

Interior Plaza de América. During the Exhibition, the visitor who went to the Paraguay Pavilion, located in Plaza de América , had the opportunity to learn about a mestizo culture developed with its own identity and adapted to the fusion of two original civilizations: the Guarani and the Hispanic. Divided into two natural regions through its rivers, the geographical, climatic, ora and fauna peculiarities of a country with undoubted features of the heritage of the indigenous culture, which did not abandon the roots of the Paraguayan people, were shown. Within the largest architectural complex of the site, Paraguay was presented to the world under the theme << Paraguay: pure and transparent nature >>. The Plaza America building hosted in its interior the great cultural richness of the sixteen Latin American countries that did not have their own pavilion within the exhibition. The harmonic and coherent composition of this set was based on a synthesis of bioclimatic and architectural variants that formed the favorable scenario to re ect the meeting of two worlds.

Plaza de América, where the Paraguay Pavilion was located in Expo 92. With an outlay of two hundred million pesetas, nanced in equal parts by the Government and some private entities, the pavilion of Paraguay occupied an area greater than three hundred square meters of the thirty- ve thousand square meters of the total surface of Plaza from America. save

Without great architectural boasts, this building, of sober lines and hermetic character, was, in the world of architectural symbolism, a transcript of the soul of that country, halfway between the Hellenistic culture and the Russian culture of the Urals, and, This is a symbiotic bridge between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. In terms of content, the central message of the Polish Pavilion was the ght against intellectual submission and for the freedom of thought of man, which has had so much in uence on the cultural independence of Poland throughout its history. He also treated the work of Nicolaus Copernicus, as well as that of the Warsaw School of Mathematics.

The National Day of Thailand is celebrated at the Universal Exhibition of Seville. Posted on May 30, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 30, 1992.

Thailand Pavilion at Expo 92. The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the acts of the National Day of Thailand , on the campus of the Isla de la Cartuja. In the Thailand Pavilion, it was an example of the traditional design of Thai architecture. Its construction was inspired by the "Golden Mountain" of Bangkok, located at the highest point of the city. The temple was built in the 19th century and is dedicated to the veneration of the Buddha's relics.

Flag of Thailand. With an area of 1,000 square meters, the building installed in the grounds of La Cartuja, evoked the atmosphere of the "Golden Mountain" and the wealth of the Thai Palace. Ascending spirally, sometimes by ramps, sometimes by stairs, there was a journey to four levels that led to the altar of the Golden Temple. The minaret was composed of the receptacle reserved for the deity, guarded by four turrets. In the light of the sun, the altar could not be contemplated. The golden color and its multiple mirrors in miniature, did not let the sight rest.

Pavilion of Thailand.

The acoustics produced by the scattered bells, had as its purpose the relaxation of the body, thanks to the powers of the wind, as the director of the Pavilion, Samroeng Sampantharak, stated. In the center of the temple, there was a table, made of the noble wood of << teak >>. The mural paintings occupied a prominent place in the decoration of the Thai temples, illustrating religious landscapes or scenes of daily life. A large representation, eighty murals of great dimensions, could be contemplated in the Pavilion of Thailand. Through them, a panoramic tour through the history of this town was offered; the transition from an agrarian to an industrialized society, without neglecting the ancestral traditions. The coexistence of the old and the new in Bangkok, was re ected in the exuberant nature, in the in uence of Buddhism. Likewise, scenes referring to details of ordinary life could be contemplated, or a journey through the evolution of navigation captured in ships of past, or current times.

Interior Pavilion of Thailand. All the layout of the contents was made taking into account the circular structure of the building. On the rst oor, the bow of an old ship had been placed on a sandy surface. Behind the bow, archaeological pieces of ceramics recovered from the bottom of the sea had been placed. The tour of the pavilion was completed with a video on the third oor entitled "The Discovery of Thailand", a tourist tour of Thailand in seven minutes, which could be viewed simultaneously on 16 screens. This screen was surrounded by murals made in clay.

Interior Pavilion of Thailand. In the vicinity of the entrance to the pavilion, had installed stands where you could buy products made in Thailand: wooden dolls, cushions, blouses and ties of silk, arti cial owers, paper umbrellas, earrings and rings, not forgetting the objects of ceramic The eldest daughter of the kings of Thailand, Princess Maha Chakri , visited during that day the Universal Exposition on the national day of her country, which was on the verge of not being held due to serious con icts that occurred in that 1992 in its territory.

Altar of the Golden Temple on the terrace of the Thailand Pavilion. Rosa Conde, the Minister Spokesperson, was on this occasion, the one in charge of doing the honors, accompanied as always by Commissioner Cassinello, who was the only one to give his speech at the Palenque a political touch by not forgetting the serious situation that Thailand was going through. during the Universal Exhibition.

Pavilion of Thailand. Next, the Princess Maha Chakri, addressed the audience from the stage in the Palenque, spoke of the history and culture of her country, and of the desire to show Thailand not only as a very ancient and beautiful civilization, but also as a modern nation, eager to renew itself to participate fully in the international future, but without losing its more valid ancient and national traditions.

Pavilion of Thailand. After the speeches, the Thais offered a complete show at the Palenque, which was also narrated by a voice-over that was explaining to the spectators, the sense of the show, its place of origin, and its history. While a small orchestra, of rare and beautiful instruments, began to interpret the melody, two couples of dancers came forward through the stage to lean to the Princess's box carrying symbolic presents. save

The National Day of the United Kingdom is celebrated at the Universal Exposition of Seville. Posted on May 21, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - May 21, 1992.

HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana at Expo 92 during National Day of the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom celebrated its day of honor at the Universal Exposition of Seville, chaired by HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana . In front of the Monastery of Santa MarĂa de las Cuevas, on the Camino Real that the high personalities crossed to stamp their signature on the Charter of Honor of the Charterhouse, Diana of Wales appeared in a luxurious car. The Prince Carlos de Inglaterra had words of encouragement and optimism for the organizer of the Universal Exhibition, which de ned exactly the word << change >>. Likewise, the heir of the British crown declared that the celebration of an event of this category represents that the technological advance could be linked to the traditions and the fundamental values, without losing the sense of the proportion and the amplitude of the humanity.

The singular design of the pavilion of the United Kingdom was characterized by its enormous structure of steel and glass and by the great arti cial waterfall, 70 meters wide by 25 high, which formed the facade, designed by the British sculptor William Pye .

Union Jack. The energy for the operation of the water pumps that supplied the waterfall was provided by a series of photoelectric solar panels located on the roof. Thanks to the evaporation of water from the waterfall, the air temperature in the surrounding area was reduced, providing fresh air to the queuing public. Through

this spectacular curtain of water the ag of the United Kingdom could be glimpsed.

Interior pavilion of the United Kingdom. The visitors were welcomed by the navigators, young people who guided and encouraged the public throughout their journey through the interior of the pavilion. The rst stop was the welcoming area where the visitor was invited to << Discover a New Britain >>.

Escalators of the pavilion where he transported visitors. Escalators led them to the upper oor of the building, dedicated to << Rediscovery of the world >>. The four elements of nature: Earth, Fire, Air and Water, were represented by four immense planes, of about sixteen meters, which extended from this oor to the lower oor. The most curious thing for most of the visitors was the space dedicated to the thinning of the ozone layer, symbolized by a big ball of the world with sunglasses.

World ball with sunglasses. The big attraction on the top oor was undoubtedly the theater performance, which at rst glance looked like a small movie theater that became a blink of an eye in a real special effects show, which transported the visitor to a three-dimensional experience.

Interior of the United Kingdom pavilion. From the theater, the visitors were driven, again through the escalators, to the second oor. << Out of the elements >> was the name of the exhibition that hosted this plant.

The abundant escalators were other attractions in the long wait for the little ones. The lower area had been used to host small exhibitions on the most important stores and brands in the United Kingdom. This country brought to the Expo a selection of its most typical items from the well-known British tea to true wonders of ne china and glass.

Bottom zone of the United Kingdom pavilion. The ship, which was located on one of the outer wings of the United Kingdom pavilion, was transported on a ship to Cรกdiz, from where it left for the port of Seville.

The ship of the United Kingdom was another element of this peculiar pavilion. Lady Diana Spencer , the European Princess who held the medal of the most admired of the reigning Monarchies who visited the Expo 92, was noted in the commemoration of the National Day of the United Kingdom.

Few people were surprised by the presence of Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales along the avenues of the Isle of la Cartuja, since the English pavilion was commissioned, announcing it well in advance that the honorary visitors would not go unnoticed. And, without a doubt, it was not. A tight program that left no room for improvisation allowed the popular couple to see each other in different parts of the exhibition space.

The Universal Exposition of Seville 1992 is inaugurated. Posted on April 20, 2017 Hemeroteca Expo - April 20, 1992. Opening day of Expo'92.

Inauguration of the Universal Exhibition of Seville. It was a Monday morning 25 years ago when the Universal Exhibition of Seville opened its doors , that under the slogan " The Age of Discovery ", showed the world the advances of humanity since the arrival of Columbus to America. For six months, the Expo'92 called on the island of La Cartuja a hundred countries, as well as international organizations, companies and the Spanish autonomous communities.

The central core was formed by four thematic pavilions, the Future, the XV Century, Navigation and Nature , and highlighted the Plaza de AmĂŠrica and the Pavilion of Spain . The last Universal Exhibition of the 20th Century exhibited the great treasures of world culture, showed what life would be like without energy or how man should respect the environment.

Royal Family during the Inauguration. Between concerts and horseback riding, each day was dedicated to a country and, already at night, it bewitched the " Spectacle of the Lake ", a colorful assembly of light and sound on the water. If for the history of Seville there will always be a before and after the Expo, also the friendly Curro , your pet, continues to be present in the memory of its people today.

Today we want to dedicate this special Expo-Hemeroteca to the people who were part of this Universal Exhibition and that thanks to them the whole world could be lived in the precincts of the Isla de la Cartuja.

Royal Family at the inauguration. The King not only had words for what has been done in the precincts of the Cartuja, but also referred during his speech to Seville as the ideal venue for the event and would pronounce the famous words to the city of Seville.

King Juan Carlos I giving his inaugural speech. << Few cities in the world are as appropriate as Seville to host a Universal Exhibition: the Roman Seville, the Arab Seville, Jewish, Christian, Indian, has produced the cultural heritage that this year we show the Spaniards have guests from all countries of the earth >>.

Guests and authorities at the inauguration of Expo'92.
