Tagus River
2km . 1h30 - 2h Our starting point is Gare do Oriente. The intermodal station of Lisbon is a jewel of the Portuguese rail network. The station is the home of 11 public art pieces made of ceramic tiles by Abdoulaye Konaté, António Segui, Arthur Boy, Erró, Hundertwasser, Raza, Sean Scully,Yayoi Kussama, Zao Wou-Ki, Joaquim Rodrigo and an impressive bronze sculpture by Madalena Abakanowicz (1A). Leave towards Vasco da Gama shopping centre and look back to the station. The iron and glass cover is a masterpiece of the Catalan architect Santiago Calatrava (1). Cross the mall into Alameda dos Oceanos and take a few minutes on the first floor to enjoy the Portuguese pavement designed by Rigo. (14) The Water Ways printed in the stone spread through the Alameda where the sea waves are replicated by the Water Volcanoes, a piece by Wet Design/ Risco (4). Get inspired by the Tagus river and leave by the Sun Gate. In front of you the Sun Man statue by Jorge Vieira (3) raises from the floor, signaling the universal knowledge path inherited by
EXPO’98. Take your right and admire the Portugal Pavilion (5). A small detour under the suspended roof is mandatory to contemplate the elegance and lightness of this architecture and engineering masterpiece by Siza Vieira. Find Rossio dos Olivais (8) with the water mirror cutting through the flags of the participating countries at the International Exhibition of 1998. By their side a mysterious iron figure, the “Rizoma” by Antony Gormley, (7) symbol the union among men. Follow the flow to the river walk by Tágides Walkway and admire MEO Arena (12), the biggest venue in Portugal and a landmark of EXPO’98 with its inverted caravel shape. Having the opportunity to attend a show inside don’t miss the wood ceiling by Regino Cruz. At Tágides Lake, designed and built by João Cutileiro, (10) one can admire the Singing of the Mermaids, the temptation of the sailors, in beautiful marble statues. Build your own music at the Music Garden (11). Finally, enjoy the beauty of the Tagus river, the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Nations Park and the unforgettable light of Lisbon.
