Back to Work

Any time you get a chance to pause during 2020, you pretty much look around and ask, “What just happened?” The news cycle is like nothing we’ve ever seen. And then, because the world doesn’t really stop, you realize you better just get back to work. And that is what I think many of us are thinking now – can we just get back to normal? Of course, prevailing opinion seems to indicate that our world is changed going forward. With that in mind, I think most of us shift to the question – can we at least get back to business? Fortunately, a pass through the Economic Dashboard on page 57 supports the notion that the engine is trying to crank up again. And, with a lot of financial stimulus out there, hopefully, most businesses can bridge the gap to the next growth cycle. In the meantime, for my team, this is our second time through for the Annual Brushware Buyers’ Guide. I’ve found that I really enjoy the chance to do a deep dive into all of the companies that appear in the guide. As we were also launching our new “beta” version of the online directory that drives the issue during this cycle, I’ve spent a lot of time passing through company websites, sifting through categories (capabilities) and through digital maps, getting a look at the actual locations of all the companies in the directory. It was a whirlwind tour, but a fun way to learn a little bit more about the industry. Our directory website migration and build wasn’t quite as smooth as last year’s brushwaremag.com 2.0 rebuild, but we have launched the new online directory to the public and out of the gate you should notice an improved, modern search functionality and a fresh look for all company listings. We’re happy to have the new structural foundation in place and all listings manually ported over from the old directory, but we are still going full-on to continue to add functionality and populate fields. And, in the spirit of looking forward, I know I enjoyed the coverage from Bob Lawrence on 3D printing (page 16) and I hope it triggers some new ideas and initiatives for companies in and around the brush industry. There is so much going on with technology and manufacturing right now – it’s a fascinating trend to follow and at Brushware we are excited to get a chance to present this story. Enjoy this issue and feel free to contact me with any feedback. Most importantly, stay safe and healthy and cheers to everyone out there grinding it out, working to get us all back to a better place.

Perlon Provides Fire Service with Protective Masks

Stainless Steel Products Now Offering Reusable Masks Stainless Steel Products has joined the fight against the coronavirus by offering reusable non-medical protection masks to employers. Information on the masks and ordering can be found at www.stainlesswires.com/masks. Reusable masks are a cost-effective way for employers to continue operating their businesses and keep employees safe and aligned with health protocols. Masks can be machine washed and can get more than 100 uses by hand washing. According to Ralph Rosenbaum, president of Stainless Steel Products: “Stainless Steel Products is committed to assisting in the fight to keep manufacturing employees safe until a COVID-19 vaccine is found and made available to everyone.

Perlon® Group CEO Florian Kisling, who has been the voluntary community fire inspector for Münster in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district for many years, hands over KN 95 masks to deputy district fire inspector Matthias Maurer-Hardt.

Through its global network, the Perlon® Group supported the procurement measures for the volunteer fire service in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district south of Hesse, Germany, by donating 2,400 KN 95 protective masks in April. The volunteer service covers 23 towns and communities in the area and the masks offer protection for fire brigade personnel to ensure the firemen and women are able to carry out their duties safely while also protecting the inhabitants in the district and anyone else in the area who may be involved in a rescue from potential contamination of the coronavirus. As a wire manufacturer and distributor, when one of our overseas suppliers informed us of their joint venture with a mask manufacturer to make certified anti-bacterial masks, using stainless steel wire, we felt compelled to act. They sent us a box of masks for free, which all of our working employees have been using for over three weeks now. They have cotton cloth on one side, are multilayered and have stainless steel mesh on the outside. These are very comfortable to wear all day long. And the best part is that they are machine washable. The payback is very quick versus disposable masks. And the headache of where to keep buying disposables is also gone. We gave out two masks for each employee and said more were available if needed; however, since we began using them three weeks ago, no one has requested any more masks. I wear them for two days at a time and throw them in the washing machine on the weekends. Then we hang them to air dry so the elastic will not get ruined in the dryer.” Stainless Steel Products is providing the masks at a low cost starting at $12.75 each, with price reductions for bulk orders. Visit www.stainlesswires.com to get your masks today.

US Congress Passes PPP Amendment Bill With broad bipartisan support, the US Congress passed a bill amending the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which eases conditions for small businesses through a loan process originally established in March. President Donald Trump signed the new bill into law on June 5, 2020. The bill makes the following amendments to the PPP to provide relief to business borrowers: Loan repayment extension: The minimum loan term for unforgiven PPP loans has been extended from two years to five. Payroll costs vs. non-payroll costs: Relative to eligibility for forgiveness, the new bill reduces the ratio of PPP funds to 60 percent versus 40 percent for non-payroll costs. Previously, the requirement was 75 percent to 25 percent. Extension for the coverage period: The period during which borrowers must spend the PPP funds has been extended from eight weeks to 24 weeks (from origination) to be eligible for forgiveness. Payroll tax deferment: Borrowers can defer payroll taxes without being penalized and remain eligible for loan forgiveness. Extension of rehiring safe harbor: The rehiring safe harbor end date has been extended by six months to provide borrowers with additional time to restore payroll levels or rehire employees without a reduction in the amount of forgiveness. The new date has been extended to December 31, 2020. Rehire/replacement exemptions: The bill also provides loan forgiveness eligibility exemptions for companies not able to rehire or replace an employee. Level of business: Additional loan forgiveness eligibility exemptions have been added for borrowers that are not able to return to the same level of business due to complying with COVID-19-related orders.

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS DUPONT FILAMENTS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS For more than 70 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.

HEALTH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - TOOTHBRUSH FILAMENTS The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, DuPont Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of DuPont™ Tynex®(nylon 612) and DuPont™ Herox®(nylon 610) . Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using DuPont filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, DuPont Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio BEAUTY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - FINE FILAMENTS DuPont™ Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from DuPont’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair. EFFICIENCY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – ABRASIVE FILAMENTS Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking for

ways to increase productivity. The emphasis is on getting more square feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extremes of the PH scale. The technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range that these filaments can be used in. Brushes made with these filaments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. DuPont™ Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need. CREATIVITY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – PAINTBRUSH FILAMENTS When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS

Recognition for being the global leader in filaments comes from our customers. You inspire us to make a difference in the world. We will continue to advance our innovations because we believe your BRUSH deserves the best FILAMENTS. filaments.dupont.com

“Monahan Partners had a very aggressive timeline,” says Mimi Bertram, VP of Professional Services at Acumatica. Within three months, Monahan Partners went through an onsite discovery process, extensive training that included end-users testing the system for an hour a day for several weeks, and a “go-live” date that would be challenged by the coronavirus. At the time of the planned launch date in early April, office employees were asked to work from home, but Monahan Partners managed to “go live” without causing any disruption in customer service. Bertram says, “Monahan Partners aced it. They worked exceptionally hard to ensure the most stress-free ‘go-live’ in my memory and the first fully remote ‘go-live’ we’ve ever done.” Among the many advantages, Monahan Partners now enjoys ease of use, automatic inventory replenishment, remote access, data visibility and a customized dashboard. VP Matt Short, the lead on the project says, “Among other benefits, the system reduces the risk of over/under stocking items, quickly exports data to Excel for easy analysis, gives a clear picture of high-level KPI and performance trends and allows us to make quicker and better-informed decisions on issues such as manpower and overtime.” President Kevin Monahan adds, “We spend so much time focusing on physical movements in the plant to produce in the most efficient ways, the same rules apply here. This is just another way to address the question we constantly ask ourselves: ‘Do we have the equipment and tools necessary to do our very best?’” Monahan Partners celebrates this important advancement by offering a virtual high five to all customers and suppliers. “We’re In This Together.” To learn more about Monahan Partners, visit their website at www.monahanpartners.com.

Tai Hing: International Trade, Acquisition Cost

An Interview with Tai Hing Purchasing Manager Elina Qian

W

ith many countries offering more transparent trade policies and the ease of sourcing raw materials throughout the world, global trade is now the standard. However, recent volatility in material and energy price, rising protectionism and the US-China trade war is making acquisition riskier and adding uncertainty to the trade market. Many enterprises no longer set their sights on countries offering low labor costs, but instead, now look for countries offering lower prices in resources. Reducing acquisition cost and risk is now the foremost mission for enterprises performing international trades. Tai Hing has been utilizing Hong Kong-based firms funded mainland factories to reduce acquisition costs and customer concerns. With more than 30 years of experience in servicing different brands and manufacturers throughout the world, Tai Hing’s purchasing manager Elina Qian answered the following questions on how best to increase the cost-effectiveness of procurement.

What is Tai Hing’s current point of view on the world’s resource distribution? Filament raw materials can be sourced throughout the world. During the screening process, in order to obtain the latest information and pricing forecast, it is essential to further evaluate the supply chain and demand to strategize purchase and inform clients on potential pricing for future purchasing. By utilizing Hong Kong-based firms, Tai Hing’s supply list proves to be larger in comparison to other suppliers. For example, Tai Hing’s nylon filament can be a Chinese brand, foreign brand or a foreign brand manufactured in China. It is also possible to obtain from US-known manufacturers.

As the purchasing process becomes more complicated, how is that affecting material quality and what is Tai Hing’s action towards the challenge? Through regular communication and visits, we always position ourselves to have good relationships with our suppliers, thus ensuring the best quality materials and prices for our client’s interests. Sourced materials need to comply with ROSH, REACH and FDA and certified documentation is required. All raw materials will be tested and qualified prior to manufacturing, which further ensures product quality and trustworthiness towards our end clients. Through a mainland China-funded and Hong Kong-based

firm, if international procurement happens to be down, Tai Hing is able to ensure the supply chain will stay intact by temporarily re-allocating the procurement of materials from mainland China.

What is the difference between a China firm and a Hong Kong-based firm? In China and Hong Kong, Tai Hing has different firms to handle different businesses. With years of experience in both national and international trade, business can be allocated to firms to tailor the best solution for our clients relative to their situation. Tai Hing’s capability of trading through different windows ensures both national and international demands are able to cover each other as required at the lowest costs for material procurement, tariffs, taxation, manufacturing, transportation, export and resell.

How does Tai Hing assist in improving a client’s cost-effectiveness? Knowledge and experiences in different trades are Tai Hing’s strong point. Our ability to analyze and strategize a trade plan in a client’s best interest with consideration of the current situation and market demand and pricing. For mainland businesses, our Jiangmen manufacturer is able to provide delivery services around the Pearl River Delta area. Delivery outside the area will be done through different freight services at their best pricing to different regions. For exporting, we’ll assist our client in the documentation required for international trade including the customs declaration of export/ import items. We are determined to take another step in our client’s interest to deliver the best trade experience and minimize any risks that may occur.

WOMAtec: Wood Products Are On The Rise Again Flexible production with the WOMAtec copy shaping machine

W

here injection molding prevailed for the brush industry a few years ago, wood is on the rise again as it is now increasingly used as a renewable raw material. This trend is particularly noticeable in the household, cosmetic and oral hygiene sectors. With the automatic copying shaper “ROTARY,” German machine builder WOMAtec has implemented the CNCcontrolled manufacturing process for the first time and the result is optimization for both quality and efficiency. With an output of up to 10 pieces per minute (the multiple for batch processing), milling with a turntable is now also efficient for products that need to be manufactured in high-batch sizes, like wooden toothbrushes, which are becoming more and more popular on the market. To meet that increasing demand, WOMAtec currently has four machines for shaping and drilling toothbrush handles in production. Thanks to solid construction and high-quality production, “ROTARY” is precise enough for delicate items, yet still offers extreme flexibility. A DXF drawing transferred via USB stick can be converted into the contour to be produced in seconds using the WOMAtec CNC control. Different contours, e.g. for different radii, can also be used for both cutters. With a speed of up to 12,000 rotations per minute, the milling cutters leave a perfect surface and, thanks to the rotating plate, never work against the wood fiber, making subsequent sanding unnecessary. And that is a key benefit, as a good smooth feel is particularly important for hairbrushes, toothbrushes, knife

All of these and many more wooden items can be produced on the WOMAtec copying shaper.

handles, etc. In addition, all imaginable types of wood and bamboo can be processed and with various adjustment options for feed and milling speed, a flawless milling result is always ensured. A CE-compliant solid housing ensures safety and protects the operator from dust and noise. The WOMAtec copying shaper is not only a pioneer in terms of safety, it also embodies the company philosophy of sustainability. Solid construction and the utilization of widely available spare parts is the standard approach for all WOMAtec machines. With a high level of vertical integration, the machines are almost 100 percent manufactured in-house and purchased parts come from well-known manufacturers, such as Beckhoff, Festo or SEW. Plus, WOMAtec uses existing copying shapers from companies such as Hempel/Hemco, Boucherie (as well as brush drilling and filling machines) for overhauls and retrofits with new CNC controls, which saves on both resources and costs. In addition to the “ROTARY” machine, WOMAtec also manufactures the “LINEAR” model, in which two milling cutters, independently controlled, process the wooden part in a continuous process, ideal for the efficient production of brush handles, hand brushes, etc. Learn more about WOMAtec at www.womatec.com.

3D PRINTING:

THE NEXT REVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENT IN MANUFACTURING?

Wire clips 3D printed at Braun Brush used in manufacturing a specialized brush

By Bob Lawrence

16 | www.brushwaremag.com

In the past three centuries, half a dozen significant developments in manufacturing have occurred that historians have termed revolutionary. Bridging over from the early 1980s to the 21st century is the phenomenal development and use of additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing. This process of building three-dimensional parts, prototypes, products and structures layer-by-layer has enjoyed extraordinary exponential growth since its invention four decades ago. Forbes Magazine projects that 2020 will mark the year “3D printing will confirm its role as one of the most transformational and consequential technologies in the fourth industrial revolution.

If so, it would rank among the following revolutionary manufacturing breakthroughs and give 3D printing’s inventor a place among these ingenious predecessors: Eli Whitney, whom historians credit as being the father of modern manufacturing, invented the cotton gin in 1794, thus eliminating a huge amount of manual labor while vastly speeding up the removal of seeds from cotton fiber. Whitney invented the milling machine in 1818, another time- and labor-saving machine, to speed up the manufacture of gun parts. The next major advancement came in 1913 when Henry Ford introduced the first moving assembly line to mass-produce automobiles and reduce the time to build each car. In 1949, John Parsons invented the first Numerical Control (NC) machine to replicate precise machine parts. It was further refined using magnetic tape readers, leading to the development in 1957 of a computer-controlled CNC machine for making precision parts. Four years later, at General Motors, George Devol unveiled the first industrial robot for spot-welding and diecasting handling. If Forbes and others are correct, the next revolutionary breakthrough in manufacturing originated in 1983 when Colorado native Chuck Hull invented stereolithography, a process he used to create the world’s first three-dimensional printed object, a small eye-wash cup. His machine, the stereolithograph apparatus (SLA), used a computer-controlled beam of ultraviolet light to instantly solidify liquid photopolymer in successive layers to build the cup.

Globally, 1.42 million units of 3D printers were shipped in 2018, the report says. It projected that number will reach 8.04 million units by 2027.

After being granted a patent in 1986, Hull co-founded 3D Systems and rolled out the world’s first SLA 3D printer that fast-tracked the production of plastic prototypes and parts. The company’s first major buyer was the automotive industry, which saw the time and money-saving advantages of using 3D printers. Other industries, including aerospace, soon began to take notice. This propelled Hull’s South Carolina-based company’s rapid rise, not only as the first major manufacturer of 3D printers, but also as a leader in providing printing materials and printing solutions. In the decades since then, Hull’s invention evolved into a plethora of powerful 3D printing machines with powerful heat sources. At the same time, a host of startup companies entered the market, emulating 3D Systems in producing printers, offering services and raw materials. As for the latter, the availability has moved beyond plastics and resins to include metals, glass, ceramics and carbon fiber.

The Players and 3D Printing Advantages Other than aerospace and automotive, industries using 3D printing for a variety of purposes include biomedical, defense, robotics, healthcare, construction, pharmaceutical, medical, dental, food, jewelry, fashion and architecture. Among the advantages of 3D printing, according to the US Department of Energy, are material and energy savings as well as enabling manufacturers to create new shapes and lighter parts that require fewer manufacturing steps. Additionally, this technology enables manufacturers to create tools and spare parts on-demand. 3D printing can also decentralize manufacturing via cloud-based servers accessed over the Internet. By using software and databases that run on cloud servers, products and parts developed in one location can be printed out anywhere on Earth. With its closed channels, the US military not only has that same capability, but its forces equipped with 3D printers can produce parts on land and sea. NASA has 3D printers aboard the International Space Station to investigate how additively-manufactured materials perform in space. In one aspect, this is key because moon dust is considered to be an additive material that will be used to print buildings to establish a permanent US base on the lunar surface.

Price Tags and An Alternative Way To Get In As for 3D printer price tags, the range for professional and performance grade printers is $1,000 to $10,000, and for business and industrial 3D printers, it’s $10,000 and up. Given the exponential growth of 3D printing in users, machine manufacturers and sales, industry projections are for printer prices to drop over time just as they did for microwaves, TVs and computers. For now, those who want to take advantage of the technology without investing in printers can access via a growing number of printing companies that have followed 3D Systems’ model and will produce parts, prototypes and products on demand. Companies large and small have taken this approach including Boston-based Gillette, which outsources personalized razor handle production to Formlabs, a professional 3D printing service in Somerville, Mass. Among brush companies taking that same route is Hillbush Ltd., of the United Kingdom, a manufacturer of brushes for the agricultural, domestic, industrial, janitorial, trade and food processing sectors. Company Chairman Philip Coward says that while Hillbrush has sophisticated engineering equipment for making machine parts from CAD, it no longer machines any prototypes.“We have used a third-party company with high-quality 3D printing machines to do our prototypes for proposed new products because we didn’t think we could justify having our own printer since it would not be used all of the time,” Coward says. “However, we are now at a stage where we are looking again at possibly buying our own 3D printer, which could be used for very small production runs as well as prototyping. Obviously, 3D printers have come down a lot in cost in recent years and buying a good quality printer is not such a large outlay.”

Big Names Late Getting In A notable aspect of the 3D printing industry’s growth is that while a number of startup companies eventually followed 3D Systems in developing printers, big-name brands in paper printers were slow to jump into the market. Hewlett Packard (HP) and Ricoh (based in Tokyo) both produced their first 3D printers in 2014. Tokyo-based Canon finally entered the field in 2017 and made a significant advancement the following year in introducing the first-of-itskind printer that produces parts and products from ceramic material. Just how big is the 3D market in US dollars? Globally, it reached $11.58 billion last year with expectations for it to expand at a compound annual growth rate exceeding 14 percent from 2020 to 2027, according to a report by Grand View Research of San Francisco, Calif. Globally, 1.42 million units of 3D printers were shipped in 2018, the report says. It projected that number will reach 8.04 million units by 2027. Factors expected to drive the market’s growth include demand for more prototyping applications from various industries such as healthcare, automotive, aerospace and defense, as well as growth in the software segment. Both Grand View Research and Maharashtra, India-based Acumen Research and Consulting agree that North America makes up the largest portion of the 3D printing market by region. Acumen also forecasts robust growth for the 3D printing industry with expectations that the global 3D printing market will reach $41 billion by 2026.

Education Along with the explosive growth in 3D printing, demand for professionals educated in all facets of additive manufacturing including design, materials and software has increased. To fulfill the need, a growing number of colleges and universities globally not only offer courses but also post-graduate degrees in the profession. Among them is Pennsylvania State University, which, along with its partner 3D Systems, operates the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D). There, students get hands-on experience in conjunction with courses leading to either a residential Master of Science in Additive Manufacturing degree or an online Master of Engineering in Additive Manufacturing degree. At the high school level, 3D printing is taught along with traditional shop classes.

RECENT 3D PRINTING ADVANCEMENTS IN MANUFACTURING March 3: Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, England, announced a $10 million project to transform thousands of tons of singleuse plastic waste to make new products. This will occur at the university’s 3D additive and digital manufacturing center known as PrintCity where projects will move from concept to finished product using a variety of resins, fiber-reinforced nylon, metal alloys and gypsum. April 2: Aprecia Pharmaceuticals of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Purdue University’s College of Pharmacy in West Lafayette, Ind., announced a collaborative effort to advance the technology and science of 3D pharmaceutical printing. In 2015, Aprecia became the first company to receive FDA approval for a 3D printed medication. According to Aprecia, it is the first and only company in the world to utilize 3D printing technology to develop and manufacture pharmaceutical products on a commercial scale. April 27: Automated construction of concrete residential, commercial, industrial and government buildings in the US is the goal of a partnership between Atlanta-based Quikrete and Los Angeles-based Contour Crafting Corporation (CC-CORP), a pioneer in large-scale 3D printing construction. Quikrete will develop a proprietary concrete for use with CC Corp’s concrete 3D printers that will result in faster and cheaper building construction. ON THE CUTTING EDGE:

BRAUN BRUSH COMPANY by Bob Lawrence

When a subcontractor for the US Department of Defense (DOD) asked Braun Brush Company based in Albertson, N.Y., to make a precise series of technical brushes, CEO Lance Cheney knew 3D printing would assure success. As Cheney put it, the technology provided “a low-cost way to make these very complex brushes and provided the ability to make modifications on the fly. Additionally, 3D printing allowed for a very short turn-around time from concept to physical product.”

20 | www.brushwaremag.com

The 145-year old company’s venture into additive manufacturing began in July 2017 with the purchase of its first 3D printer instead of outsourcing the project to a 3D printing company. Cheney says he did so because “the cost of entry was so cheap and we already had the CAD skills in-house, and the secretive nature of the DOD project dictated that all work be done in-house.” Although Braun has made many high-tech brushes, including one for the Mars Rover, he said the DOD project was “definitely the most technologically advanced set of brushes we have ever made. I have never seen anything else like it. It would have taken a great deal longer and cost a great deal more if we did not have the 3D printer.” This does not mean that the company totally abandoned the machine shop because “there is a place for both,” he says. “However, there are intricacies of design that can be accomplished with a 3D printer that simply cannot be machined. The internal structure of a 3D-printed part is native to the technology, just for starters. We make internal parts for complex brushes with our 3D printers that are relatively disposable that would have been way too costly to make any other way.”

LEFT: 3D printing in action at Braun Brush RIGHT: Braun Brush 3D printed this prototype of a robotic gripper to be used in production

Of the many industries the family-owned company serves, 3D printing is most useful for producing brushes for its aerospace, defense, pharmaceutical and food processing clients, according to Cheney. In addition to manufacturing its line of industrial brushes, Braun is a custom maker with the ability to “quickly turn around a proof of concept or a prototype” using its printers. The company also employs printers to produce finished products, machine set-ups, work-in-progress components and research and development projects. In addition to being a timesaver, Cheney says 3D printing saves on raw material costs and uses no more electricity than standard machining. Nor did his first printer require a substantial investment. “It was a very fast payback, just two months,” he says. While Braun’s printers have the capability of producing products by the hundreds, he foresees the day when the technology will advance to the point where that number will increase 10 fold because “speed and accuracy will increase as costs decrease at the same time.” However, even with the

exponential advances in 3D printing technology, Cheney does not believe it will become the manufacturing process across many or all industries in the future. Even so, he thinks “it will become an integral part of all manufacturing, similar to robotics.” Braun currently operates three standard dual extrusion 3D printers that use plastic, and as more materials become cheaper to print, Cheney says he “will be adding metal and other types of printers in the near future.” As for operating the printers, Braun’s expertise came from the manufacturer and YouTube videos. Asked if he agrees with futurist Jack Uldrich who says, “If you’re not already employing 3D printing technology or not thinking about it, you’re behind the curve,” Cheney replies, “Yes and no. There are plenty of industries and even companies in our industry that will never have a use for 3D printers, just like there are many brush companies that have little interest in making highly technical brushes. It depends largely on your market and how you define yourself within it.”

Historic Lows for April PMI Numbers China and Italy Showcase the May PMI® Bounceback

While the Institute for Supply Management® reported only a slight uptick to a 43.1 percent PMI® for US manufacturers in May, there were more positive signs overseas. Italy saw a strong rebound from an all-time low of 31.1 in April with a 45.4 percent figure in May. That actually pushed Italy above its six-month PMI® moving average. In addition, China bumped up to growth territory with a Caixin Manufacturing PMI of 50.7 percent in May, which represented a correction after a slight, unexpected drop in April. It also represents China’s highest PMI® since January, with the report noting that May data signaled a further increase in output following February’s record decline, with Chinese firms citing the resumption of work after easing COVID-19 restrictions as the key factor. Looking at the US manufacturing scene, the report from ISM® says the upward movement for the PMI® indicates expansion in the overall economy after the severe contraction in April (which ended 113 consecutive months of growth). “The coronavirus pandemic impacted all manufacturing sectors for the third straight month. May appears to be a transition month, as many panelists and their suppliers returned to work late in the month,” says Timothy R. Fiore, Chair for the ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “However, demand remains uncertain, likely impacting inventories, customer inventories, employment, imports and backlog of orders. Among the six biggest industry sectors, Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products remains the only industry in expansion. Transportation Equipment; Petroleum and Coal Products; and Fabricated Metal Products continue to contract at strong levels.”

MAY SECTOR GROWTH RATIO: 6/11 APRIL RATIO: 2/15 US GROWTH SECTORS (6): Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Furniture and Related Products; Apparel, Leather and Allied Products; Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products; Paper Products; and Wood Products. US CONTRACTION SECTORS (11): Printing and Related Support Activities; Primary Metals; Transportation Equipment; Petroleum and Coal Products; Fabricated Metal Products; Machinery; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components; Chemical Products; Computer and Electronic Products; and Plastics and Rubber Products.

EUROPEAN PMI® Looking at Europe overall, the new figure of 39.4 percent reported by IHS Markit was up from the April low of 33.4, but it still represents a major contraction for European manufacturing. Government restrictions related to COVID-19 were still impacting the sector in May, but confidence in the year ahead reached a threemonth high. Germany’s May PMI® moved up to 36.6 percent, but that was only up 2.1 percentage points from a low of 34.5 in April. Outputs and new orders continued to decline even after the record drop for both in April and the rate of job losses accelerated for Germany. Italy’s jump to 45.4 is a good sign for Europe but that figure is still in contraction territory. Notably, though, the 14.3-percent-point improvement from April was well above the expectation of 37.1.

ISM PANEL COMMENTS Current conditions in the automotive, construction, oil and gas, agriculture equipment and tube/pipe markets are all adversely impacting our business results. (Chemical Products) We see an issue with suppliers that are affecting production. At the same time, social distancing measures in [the] manufacturing plant and customer demand are impacting the rate of production. (Transportation Equipment) Increased COVID-19 sales in the food business have really stressed our production capabilities. (Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products) Returning to full production for automotive. Ramp-up will still depend on the speed of automotive startups. We have built up inventory to stock. Ready to ship. (Fabricated Metal Products) Business activity remains strong for consumable applications and very weak in durable segments. (Plastics and Rubber Products) We have been fortunate that most of our customer base is considered to be a part of the critical workforce, so we have been running at around 80 percent of our normal production volume. (Primary Metals) Getting out from under several suppliers being closed worldwide. Also, looking at what really needs to be in China. (Machinery) We see a lot of positive signs, despite what’s going on. People seem to continue to be building and looking to projects for the fall of 2020 and beyond. There is good optimism out there. (Nonmetallic Mineral Products)
