Expansion and New Website
It doesn’t seem that long ago we were on the show floor of the World Brush Expo in Bologna, but summer flew by, and it is already time to look forward to Ibiza, Spain, and the 64th FEIBP Congress in October. We are pleased to offer a full preview of this year’s Congress (page 14) provided by new correspondent Marion Keller. It’s always exciting to welcome a new member to the team and we look forward to seeing more articles from Marion in future editions.
In the spirit of looking ahead, I am also extremely pleased to announce two more additions to the Brushware team. First off, we welcome Lisa Ray as our new Chief of Staff, working across the entire Brushware suite of products with a special emphasis on our editorial workflow and improvements to our digital platforms. Rounding out our team expansion, Linda Blachly has joined us as our new web editor. She will be managing our incoming press releases and digital content flow for the website and the rapidly growing Brushware Digest e-newsletter.
Starting at the beginning of the year, we had a number of initiatives in mind and a further build-out of the Brushware editorial engine has always been key to our strategy. With all focus on the Expo in May for the first five months, we knew that expansion would have to wait until June, but getting these key members in place over the summer was a big step for the team and we are already seeing the benefits.

Going even further, investment in the team has run in parallel with another key upgrade for Brushware. Many of our readers may have already noticed that we quietly launched the new brushwaremag.com website just prior to World Brush. The new website continues to offer all of the latest news stories and informational content. But we also wanted to ensure the site sets a new standard as a portal for finding resources in the brush industry, whether it is brush manufacturers, machine makers or suppliers. The new focus should be clear when you visit as you will now find our online directory front and center on the home page with easy access to our top categories and new mapping capabilities.
Like all of our platforms, it is still a work in progress, but we invite you to check out the site. If your company is not yet listed, contact us as we are happy to walk you through becoming a part of the online buyers’ guide. In addition, we welcome your feedback. Just like the magazine, the website is a resource for the brush industry and your opinion counts in making it a vital tool for the overall community.
Please enjoy this issue of Brushware and have a wonderful fall season!

Boucherie Grateful to World Brush Expo Visitors
Boucherie extends its gratitude to all who visited their booth at the World Brush Expo in Bologna. The energy and the enthusiasm from visitors was a wonderful reward for the effort put into preparations for the show. It was great to spend time, talk business and leisure and have a beer and a bite with industry professionals. There was plenty to be seen and experienced in the booth:
The Hepta-FM/R is a conventional toothbrush manufacturing machine, but it has a special tufting unit that uses plastic anchor plates instead of metal ones. This way, it is possible to make completely recyclable brushes, and by choosing the materials carefully, to make brushes that are completely made of one type of plastic.
The PTt 2.0 machine for the production of anchorless toothbrushes had a complete upgrade with a new fibrebox, a faster filling tool and new tufting shuttles that will allow an output of up to 40 brushes per minute.
The Hepta-2-FM machine is a high-output toothbrush machine with two filling tools that each run at 1200 tufts per minute. It can be completely automated and gives the highest ratio of brushes per square meter of any machine available on the market.
The IDM machine for the production of interdental and mascara brushes is now available with a special spreading system for the filaments that give a much more consistent brush head, even when
working with thinly spread very fine filaments. The output is up to 100 high-quality brushes per minute.
The AVT-E machine is a very simple and compact toothbrush machine for anchorless toothbrushes, with a very high output for its size. The machine can be automated, and will manufacture electrical toothbrush heads of high quality at a very high speed.
The FRM machine is a high-precision cutting- and endrounding machine for toothbrush filaments. It produces the pucks of end-rounded filament that are used in the AVT machines.
The Illig range of packaging machines was presented as well. The HSU-35 is a compact and modular packaging machine for full-carton blisters. The HSU-650 makes full-carton blisters and is fast enough to process the products coming from several tufting machines. For both machines, Boucherie builds automatic infeed systems to boost the efficiency even more.
Boucherie is grateful for the opportunity to connect with industry peers and showcase their latest innovations. The positive feedback and interactions at the World Brush Expo inspire continued excellence and innovation.

Koelnmesse Extends Contract with Managing Director Oliver Frese
Koelnmesse GmbH announced in July that it will extend the contract with Oliver Frese, which runs until the end of 2024, by a further five years until December 31, 2029. Frese has been Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Koelnmesse since 2020.

“In recent years, Oliver Frese has not only led the Cologne event portfolio through the difficult phase of the corona pandemic but has also equipped the market-related areas of sales, services and marketing communication with a new operating model,” says Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse. "Together with the International division, he has also successfully implemented global portfolio responsibility in trade fair management in recent years. I would like to thank Oliver Frese for his very successful work and am convinced that Koelnmesse will continue on its growth path with him.”
After Frese held management positions at Deutsche Telekom and the energy group EnBW, among others and served on the board of Deutsche Messe AG for several years, Koelnmesse GmbH appointed the qualified social scientist to the management board in 2020.
“At the top of my agenda for the coming years is to develop and expand highly attractive trade fair formats and concepts for the Cologne location,” says Frese. “The aim is for Koelnmesse events to not only remain an indispensable date in the business calendar of the currently more than 50,000 exhibiting companies but also to become the ‘place to be’ for new exhibitors and partners.”
DeburringEXPO Merges into
the New 2025 PARTS FINISHING Tradeshow
Never before has the industry changed as quickly as it does today, and that trend is having an impact on the requirements of tradeshows. Accordingly, the DeburringEXPO organizers have announced that it will no longer be held as an independent event in the future but will be merged into the new PARTS FINISHING trade fair.
The first edition of this new event will be held November 12-13, 2025, and will combine the topics of deburring technologies, component cleaning and surface finishing, and will be held at the Karlsruhe Exhibition Center in Karlsruhe, Germany.
“After many discussions with exhibitors at DeburringEXPO and intensive observation of the development of DeburringEXPO for various trade fairs, we have decided to no longer hold the trade fair as an independent event,” says Hartmut Herdin, managing director of the private trade fair organizer fairXperts GmbH & Co. KG.
In the future, the topic of deburring technologies will be bundled with the areas of component cleaning and surface finishing in the new, two-day PARTS FINISHING trade fair. Surface finishing includes, among other things, the process steps of fine and ultra-fine grinding, polishing, honing, lapping, mass finishing, blasting and brushing.
Global Shop Solutions Digitally Transforms How Manufacturers Work With Dashboard Designer Feature
As the manufacturing industry continues to grow more complex, manufacturers are becoming more dependent on accessing operational and financial data the way they want to see it. Global Shop Solutions, a leading provider of ERP software, is improving transparency for manufacturers with the Dashboard Designer feature. This innovative feature makes it easy to design, customize, track and display data in formats that meet the unique business needs of manufacturers.
“Dashboard Designer is a no-code data analysis tool manufacturers can use across their organization,” says Dusty Alexander, President and CEO of Global Shop Solutions. “Manufacturers can tailor Dashboards to their own specifications by dragging and dropping features directly onto the screen. If they know Excel they can easily tailor just about anything they want to do in the Dashboard Designer.”
One of the newest Dashboard Designer features fulfills an urgent need for manufacturers by displaying shop floor metrics on interactive TV screens located on the shop floor. Personnel no longer have to search for production data because it is always in front of them. Five times faster than running a report, the interactive TV screens have proved so efficient that the Dashboard Designer team created a “sister” Report Designer to generate faster, more customized reports.
Global Shop Solutions also hosts a user community where companies with a Dashboard Designer license can download, implement and edit existing Dashboard designs at no cost.

Koelnmesse Expands Hardware Trading Presence to Colombia
With a strategic movement that enriches the panorama of industrial trade fairs in Latin America, Koelnmesse, in collaboration with Corferias and Concept2b, is now part of “El Gran Salón Ferretero,” a premier event in the hardware sector, which recently took place in Corferias, Bogotá on July 12-13, 2024. The event was held for the first time under this new alliance and welcomed more than 230 exhibitors and around 9,000 visitors.
This new chapter for the hardware industry in the region reinforces Koelnmesse’s leadership in the organization of international trade fairs.
“I am delighted to invest the expertise we have acquired with our successful Cologne model EISENWARENMESSE in this promising joint venture in Colombia,” says Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse. “This will enable us to support our customers in the Latin American market and create synergies between our events in Cologne and abroad. An absolute win-win situation for everyone involved.”
Some EISENWARENMESSE customers have already expressed their interest in the market. In addition to EISENWARENMESSE since 1971 and Asia-Pacific Sourcing since 2005 in Cologne,
TUBE BRUSHES REDEFINED
Germany, as well as the China International Hardware Show in Shanghai, China, Koelnmesse is now expanding its presence to the Americas. “The new joint venture is the sixth hardware event in our portfolio and an important milestone in our internationalization strategy,” says Böse.
In 2023, the International Hardware Fair Italy, in Bergamo, Italy and the International Hardware Fair India in New Delhi, India, also debuted as two satellite events.
Colombia stands out on the world stage as one of the 30 most attractive countries for foreign investment and is among the five largest economies in Latin America. In this position, it can offer privileged access to the Latin American and Caribbean markets. The country benefits from a complex port system that optimizes connectivity and access to a variety of operators and services. This environment is ideal for “El Gran Salón Ferretero” to capitalize on these geographical and economic advantages, serving as a vital meeting point for the sector.
According to Statista, the Colombian tool and hardware store market projects revenues that will reach 12.66 billion euros in 2024, with an annual growth rate of 2.68 percent until 2028. This sustained growth shows a clear trend: the growing interest of Colombian consumers in home improvement and building projects, which in turn drives demand for construction tools and materials.
In its ongoing journey of growth and expansion, El Gran Salón Ferretero will extend to three days in its next edition, to be held from November 6-8, 2025. This edition aims to create more opportunities for exhibitors and visitors, offering innovations and trends that will continue to pave the way for the hardware sector in Latin America and the Caribbean.

How the US Election Could Impact the Supply Chain
By Lisa Anderson
The economy is facing headwinds with high inflation, interest rates and concerning employment numbers. The world is on high-risk alert with the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war, which has expanded to Hezbollah. Iran backs Israel’s enemies as well as the Houthi rebels that have been attacking container ships in the Suez Canal. China has been threatening Taiwan and the South China Seas. In addition, there is a plethora of other issues such as CrowdStrike, aerospace challenges, the threat of strikes, shortages and weather events. The bottom line is that businesses are navigating volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA), and they are looking for stability. With this backdrop, will the election create calm or further disruption in the supply chain?
From an economic standpoint, Trump’s pro-growth policies are likely to stimulate business investment. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017, the largest corporate tax reduction in the history of the United States, resulted in a domestic investment increase of 20 percent. In essence, it resulted in more business investment, more growth and more wages for workers with little impact on government revenue since the taxes were offset by an expanding economy. Harris has not formally stated where she stands on taxes; however, common thinking is that she is unlikely to support the continuation of these tax cuts (that expire in 2025).
In terms of government spending, both parties will increase spending on infrastructure since it carries over from the current administration. Trump supports manufacturing in the U.S. and plans to incentivize that by expanding energy, thereby decreasing the price of energy to make the U.S. more competitive while extending corporate tax incentives. The Biden-Harris administration supports manufacturing in the U.S. and has provided incentives such as the CHIPS and Science Act to encourage investment in semiconductor manufacturing. Tariffs were ramped up under the Trump administration to incentivize fair trade and encourage domestic manufacturing, and Trump has said that he supports reciprocal tariffs in a second term. The Biden-Harris administration kept Trump’s tariffs in place and added EV tariffs. Thus, tariffs are likely to be used as a tool to support economic security.
Given the high risk associated with China, businesses are searching for alternatives. In addition to the need for economic security, with automation and advanced technologies lessening the impact of labor costs, a competitive tax rate, the availability of energy and natural resources and geographic proximity to customers, the United States has become more attractive. Thus, businesses are reshoring. According to the Reshoring Initiative, the 2023 job announcements due to reshoring and foreign direct investment was the second highest year on record. Nearshoring, locating manufacturing close to customers, is also rising with the focus on Mexico and Latin America especially for high labor-cost products. No matter who wins the election, regional manufacturing (reshoring and nearshoring) will increase. In fact, vertical integration is gaining momentum to further control success.
What does all this mean to the supply chain? There will be continued disruptions and supply chains will be on the move. Supplier diversification will continue to be of paramount importance. Manufacturing locations will be evaluated. Energy will remain a key driver, and the availability of natural resources and security will rise in importance. Smart companies will automate and digitize to enhance visibility, reduce costs and support flexibility. However, with supply chains on the move, disruptions will not dissipate. Volatility will be the new normal. Only the proactive that invest wisely, simplify, innovate and stay nimble will thrive. In fact, with the transformation of the talent landscape based on the retirement of the largest population in history, these proactive companies will have the opportunity to dominate their industries.
Lisa Anderson is the founder and president of LMA Consulting Group, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in manufacturing strategy and end-to-end supply chain transformation that maximizes the customer experience and enables profitable, scalable, dramatic business growth. She recently released “SIOP (Sales Inventory Operations Planning): Creating Predictable Revenue and EBITDA Growth,” an e-book on how to better navigate supply chain chaos and ensure profitable, scalable business growth. FEIBP 64th Congress Preview: Guide to Ibiza
By Marion Keller
What do brushware, beaches and books of poetry have in common? The answer can be found at the 2024 FEIBP Congress in Ibiza, Spain, on October 9-12, where attendees will delve into the many ways their companies are interconnected with one another, amid one of the most beautiful areas in Europe.
Been There, Donne That
Four centuries ago, the English poet and cleric John Donne wrote the immortal line, “No man is an island” in his “Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions.” Though the author intended his work to focus on religion, the statement has come to symbolize the many ways in which human culture is linked together. Now, “No man is an island” is the overarching theme of the 2023-25 annual FEIBP Congress meetings.
Alessandro Acquaderni, elected FEIBP President at last year’s Congress in Belfast, is looking forward to the opportunity to delve into the future of the brushware industry at this year’s meeting.
“In Belfast in 2023, we discussed how ‘No Company Leader Is an Island.’ We wanted to reflect on how the federation could be better in facilitating networking among leaders,” Acquaderni says. “In the end, a leadership decision sometimes is taken alone, and we wanted to investigate how this loneliness can be reframed in a different perspective.”
“This year, the perspective is raised to ‘No Company Is an Island.’ Companies are not alone, even if they sometimes feel like it, and they are not just competitors,” he says. “Companies belong to a Federation that brings benefits. Companies’ actions have effects on their environments and on the Federation as well.”
Into Connected Air
For this year’s keynote speaker, FEIBP wanted someone who could illustrate the idea of connectedness. The speaker selection, Araceli Segarra, is very familiar with the topic. She’s not just the first Spanish woman to climb Mount Everest — she assisted a rescue team that responded to the 1996 disaster on the mountain in which eight climbers caught in a blizzard died while trying to descend. Her efforts can be seen in the movie “Everest,” the highest-grossing IMAX documentary of all time.

Segarra’s first book, “Not That High and Not That Difficult,” uses her experience with the rescue team and with mountain climbing in general to provide guidance on key business topics such as: change management, struggles with uncertainty, determination, resilience, creativity and collaboration.
“Araceli will go into the path of a company leader — how companies can achieve the highest peaks and face the toughest difficulties only if working together and not considering themselves on the top of a peak alone,” Acquaderni says. “She will guide us through mastering the seemingly insurmountable. Her insights promise to inspire and elevate our perspectives on overcoming challenges and enhancing cooperation.”
Innovation and Flower Power
Hotel Information
Hotel Torre del Mar
The Congress will kick off on October 9 with registration and an opening cocktail party where attendees can mingle. The events on October 10 will include the announcement of the recipients of the 16th annual Innovation Awards honoring exciting new brushware technologies introduced after September 2023. Selection criteria involves originality, innovative character, practicality, profile for the consumer market, acceptability of the price level, availability of the product on the market and profitability. Products can be submitted for consideration until September 16, 2024.
During the general assemblies, FEIBP leadership will present data from the past year and a half on the industry’s presence and visibility on social media. “All the data that we gather show a growth of visibility across all of the players in our industries,” Acquaderni says. “In general, people are more aware of what a brush is and can do.”
In addition to Segarra’s keynote speech and multiple working group sessions, the day will include two team-building exercises that are being kept fairly hush-hush for now. The October 10 program will conclude with a barbecue dinner, DJ and open bar session.
Much of Friday, October 11, will be devoted to seeing more of Ibiza Town. After a Brush Forum and General Assembly followed by lunch, participants can transfer to the city center for a guided tour of the Old Town, followed by a “Flower Power-Brush Party” in one of the most fascinating beach clubs in Ibiza.
Back In Time
The choice of Ibiza for the 2024 Congress and Belfast for the 2023 Congress wasn’t just happenstance — while no man may be an island, actual islands provide a fitting backdrop for the overall theme. Ibiza in particular stands out as a draw for tourists from around the world looking to enjoy an environment famous for its beauty and fun.
A UNESCO World Heritage site “bringing together exceptional archaeological and historic sites … adjacent to a marine reserve of global importance,” Ibiza offers everything from splashy beaches to ancient ruins for visitors to enjoy. In October, temperatures on average range from 15° to 24° Celsius (59°-75° Farenheit).
One of the Balearic Islands located off of the eastern coast of Spain, Ibiza was first settled in 654 B.C. when Phoenician voyagers established a port on the island. The civilization later transitioned to the control of former Phoenician colony Carthage, serving as a major trading post in the Mediterranean. Over time, Ibiza came under the rule of the Roman Empire, Arab conquerors and the Crown of Aragon before King Philip V of Spain did away with the autonomy of the local government in 1715. Now, Ibiza, Formentera, Majorca and Menorca form the Balearic Autonomous Community.
Tourists seeking to explore Ibiza’s history have plenty of options. The Dalt Vila, Ibiza’s historic Old Town, sits on the hilltop of Puig de Vila overlooking the harbor. The site is surrounded by walls that enclose its many historical sites (along with very modern restaurants and shops) among cobbled streets.
The cathedral in the Dalt Vila, Catedral de Santa María de la Neu de Vila d’Eivissa, was first constructed in the 14th century, though the Baroque style it currently displays is the result of a restoration finished in 1728. Dalt Vila also includes the Ibiza Castle, Castell d’Eivissa, a collection of buildings constructed over centuries starting with the Phoenicians in 7th century B.C.
Venturing outside the Old Town, visitors can see one of the best-preserved — and largest — necropolises in the world, Puig des Molins. With nearly 3,000 tombs over five hectares, the site was the city’s cemetery from the time of the Phoenicians until approximately 700 A.D. To see how some of the residents of the necropolis lived back in the day, the Sa Caleta Phoenician Settlement, extending across 10 acres, contains the remnants of stone buildings dating back to 7th century B.C.
Moving forward in time a bit, tourists can explore Ibiza’s seven remaining pirate watchtowers, built starting in the 13th century A.D. — Torre des Carregador, Torre des Savinar, Torre d’en Rovira, Torre d’en Valls, Torre de Balansat, Torre de Portinatx and the Torre de Ses Portes.

Plenty To Do In Ibiza
Ibiza has much to offer from the 21st century as well. The island hosts quite a few “hippy markets,” dating back to the 1960s, when “hippies” often returned from wintering in Asia with brightly colored clothing and goods that they would sell in markets in Europe. Today, the hippy markets offer everything from handcrafted products to inexpensive clothing and jewelry. On Saturday, October 12, the Congress will end with a tour, shopping and lunch in the Hippy Market Las Dalias, allowing participants to take part in this iconic Ibizan activity.
For those seeking late-night fun, Ibiza is famed for its nightlife. Bars, restaurants, nightclubs — DJs flock to the island to make sure they don’t miss the party. “Super club” Hï Ibiza, voted the #1 club in the world for multiple years by readers of DJ Mag, and open-air venue Ushuaïa are both relatively close to the site of the FEIBP Congress and worth a visit for anyone looking for a true Ibizan celebration. Other clubs of note include Amnesia (aka the “temple of music”), DC10, Eden Ibiza and Pacha Ibiza. And, naturally, no discussion of Ibiza would be complete without some mention of the beaches. Iconic beach options include Las Salinas, Cala Gracioneta, Cala Gracio and many more. FEIBP attendees, however, don’t have to go far to enjoy the beach — the hotel hosting the Congress, the Hotel Torre del Mar, is located on the Playa d’en Bossa, Ibiza’s longest beach at three kilometers across (and one of its most beautiful). Visitors can enjoy the sand and surf or swim instead in the hotel’s outdoor pool that encircles a historic tower and provides views of the nearby island Formentera.
Looking Ahead
No man is an island. No leader is an island. No company is an island. At the 2024 Congress, attendees will find out the location of the 2025 Congress, which will also take place on an island in Europe and center around the theme of, “No Federation Is an Island.”
“Federations can work together to shape benefits and advantages for their members and see what type of values they can establish,” Acquaderni says. “We look forward to discussing all of the ways that FEIBP can work as a partner to support our industry and the many companies that make it so special.”

Promoting Business-Friendly Regulations
How to Work Productively with Town Officials
Legislation out of Washington can have a profound effect on businesses large and small. Despite the high profile of federal initiatives though, municipal ordinances very often have a more immediate impact on profits. Business owners need to cultivate productive relationships with town officials to promote “businessfriendly” regulations.
By Phillip M. Perry
It’s a Presidential election year, and everyone’s mind is on the November ballot box. What’s going to happen in Washington, and how will that affect the business operating environment? While federal laws and regulations are important, experts caution against getting distracted from events closer to home. Profits, after all, are more often affected by ordinances passed in the town hall than by what comes out of the White House and the United States Capitol.
“National politics tend to get all the headlines,” says Cliff Ennico, an attorney who counsels on business matters. “But the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of political decisions that affect businesses are local in nature.”
Municipal ordinances can touch business operations in a remarkable number of ways. A partial list includes taxation, business licensing, zoning laws, street and traffic patterns, parking regulations, building design and signage, environmental and health regulations and even the installation of unsightly utility poles and cell phone towers.
And that’s not all. “Local governments have been expanding their role into employee benefits and rights,” says Marc H. Pfeiffer, Assistant Director at the Bloustein Local Government Research Center. “In many cases, cities are establishing minimum wages.”
Speaking Up
Given the stakes involved, it’s important for every business to promote favorable local ordinances and protest damaging ones. Being an effective business ambassador, though, requires laying a bit of groundwork. And that means acquiring a solid grounding in a town’s political dynamics. “Business owners should get to know the structure of their

How Well Do You Promote Good Town Ordinances?
Does your business play a leading role in the theater of local politics? To see how effective you are in promoting business-friendly town ordinances, give yourself 10 points for each “Yes” answer to the questions below. Then total your score.
1. Are you knowledgeable about the structure of your town government?
2. Do you know which public officials are responsible for decisions that affect business operations?
3. Have you established an “early warning system” that issues alerts about proposed ordinances?
4. Are you on the mailing lists of public officials, “hyper-local” websites and civic organizations?
5. Have you developed a relationship with the city councilor responsible for your part of town?
6. Do you communicate how proposed ordinances may help or hurt the community at large as well as your business?
7. Do you support your positions with facts, figures and anecdotes?
8. Do you offer solutions to business and community problems?
9. Do you avoid offering gifts or doing favors such as paying for lunch?
10. In private meetings with public officials, do you confine your conversation to the provision of helpful information?
What’s your score? Over 80: You are an effective business ambassador. Between 60 and 80: Time to fine-tune your practices. Below 60: It’s a good idea to re-gear by instituting ideas from the accompanying story.
local government and who is responsible for making what decisions,” says Dr. John P. Pelissero, Director of Government Ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. “Knowing what each official’s duties are, and whether they have a role in regulating a certain area, will facilitate efficient interactions and the provision of useful information.”
Identifying the “movers and shakers” who should get the business perspective on a proposed ordinance is one thing. Reaching them in time is another. To get wind of proposed legislation in advance of its passage into law requires some kind of “early warning system” that issues an alert when controversial proposals first arise.
There are many ways to create such a system. One is to get on mailing lists maintained by local and state legislators, community and trade associations and towns themselves. “Local communities are required by law in most states to publish their calendars of events and information on what they’re doing,” says Ennico. “So find your town’s website, bookmark it and make a point to check in and see what’s going on at least once a week. What committees are meeting?”
Civic associations such as the Jaycees, Rotary, Lions Club and Kiwanis can also provide conduits to news about proposed regulations. “Local organizations are often made up of business owners and can provide a platform to discuss legislation,” says Nancy Bocskor, Development Director of Business For America. So-called “hyperlocal” websites, often maintained by weekly digital newspapers, also publish alerts about town proposals.
Reaching Out
Establishing an early dialog with politicians can facilitate effective communication down the road when controversial regulatory proposals arise. The good news is that local officials are a lot easier to deal with than their federal counterparts. “People who run for local office are very approachable, because most of them really do care about their communities,” says Ennico. “For most of them, politics is not a stepping stone to higher office. Many times, they are business owners themselves, so already you share some common interests. Other times, they are attorneys looking to expand their network.”
One way to get known among local representatives is to speak up at town meetings, where every effort should be made to shake hands and make a personal introduction. “Maybe it seems old-fashioned in this digital age, but in-person communication with local public officials can be a very powerful way to get things done,” says attorney Sean W. Hadley, a lecturer of public policy at Rutgers University.
Effective business ambassadors are knowledgeable about local affairs. “Business owners should be as knowledgeable and informed as possible about what’s going on in city government,” says Pelissero. “Members of the city council and county boards want to make sure the people that they’re interacting with are able to demonstrate awareness of current issues in local government and how they impact both the business and the broader communities.”
Once a dialog is established, experts advise setting up a regular meeting with legislators or local city council members. “You want to get to the point where the public officials view you as a trusted source of information,” says Hadley. “They may call you for your perspective on proposed resolutions. Keep in mind that these local politicians are not experts on everything. To make good laws, they need people in the community to offer unique perspectives.”
Offer Solutions
You may be convinced of the wisdom of your position for or against a certain ordinance. But how can you convince the public official?
Effective business ambassadors understand and address their town’s larger concerns. Maybe a certain proposal will promote trade. But how will it affect homeowners, schools and the public in general? “Public officials need to determine what regulations
are in the long-term public interest versus what may only satisfy the business community,” says Pelissero. “When speaking up against a proposed zoning change, for example, it’s important to show how it might negatively affect the local community as well as business profits.”
An effective presentation requires the support of facts, figures and stories. Do the math. Be able to show the official how a proposed regulation will affect employment, commercial enterprise or a certain industry. And then support your point with a powerful anecdote that illustrates the problem. Is parking bad in your area? Then tell how a local citizen needed to get to your business but couldn’t find a place to park.
Finally, drive your point home by offering a solution to a perceived problem. “A businessperson shouldn’t be just a complainer,” says Hadley. “Public officials want to hear from people who are community problem solvers.”
Doing Right
Promoting a point of view is good. Creating the impression of bribery is bad. “Many state and local governments have very clear codes of conduct for their public officials, which will restrict what they can and cannot do or accept from the public,” says Pelissero. “These are intended to limit the opportunities for something to occur that doesn’t appear to be proper. But even if there’s not a legal requirement or restriction, business owners should be mindful of ethical concerns when they interact with local public officials.”
It’s not a good idea, for example, to offer free tickets to some event while at the same time seeking something for your business. And avoid offering to spring for lunch. “In most cases, the politician can’t accept payment of meals,” says Pelissero. “They need to avoid doing anything that creates the appearance of a gift, for which something was expected in return.”
The trick here is to avoid both the reality and the appearance of shady conduct. “Business owners should find opportunities to speak to their representatives in ways that don’t appear compromising,” says Pelissero. Speaking up at city council meetings or public gatherings sponsored by civic organizations such as the Rotary Club is always acceptable. Those are good venues in which to interact with public officials and get to know them and maybe have a chance to talk with them about issues that are of concern to business.
“If you do happen to meet privately with a public official, make sure you are there to provide useful information to help them reach a decision,” says Pelissero. “You’re not there to find out what it is you can do to come to some arrangement about an issue, because that can be perceived as unethical.”
Bonus tip: It’s okay to send a thank you letter to a politician who has done a business-friendly action, and who may want to post your message on their website.
Keeping Perspective
Becoming an effective player in local politics can go a long way toward promoting business-friendly regulations. Local politicians want to hear from businesses, just as they want to hear from other area stakeholders. “Many small business owners think that no one will listen to them,” says Bocskor. “But that’s not true. Studies show that small businesses are among the most highly trusted entities in the nation.”
While speaking up in support of business-friendly regulations is important, the effective business ambassador moves slowly and carefully, sending out feelers while avoiding any step that might transcend ethical boundaries. “Keep things in perspective,” says Hadley. “This is a situation where you want to kind of crawl before you walk. Listen to your local public officials and learn about their perspectives, before you jump into local politics full force.”
At the end of the day, achieving a favorable business operating environment boils down to effective communication. While professionals advise treading carefully, they do encourage taking action. “Don’t wait until a law is passed and then write a letter to the editor complaining about it,” says Ennico. “That’s an absolute waste of time. Get involved. Go to meetings. Be part of the solution.”
Create the Shop Floor You Always Wanted with ERP
The world of modern manufacturing holds no room for error. Competition is fierce, margins are razor-thin, every process matters, every second counts, and every piece of data can have the potential to make or break your business. Accuracy is king, efficiency is queen, and with customers demanding faster turnaround times, real-time data is the ace up your sleeve.
By Adam Grabowski Director, Global Shop Solutions
Success in today’s rapidly evolving industry requires thriving, innovating and being a leader in your markets. It relies on having the right building blocks, technology and ERP partner to reimagine your business, starting with a better manufacturing shop floor. With the right tools at your disposal, you can simplify processes, boost productivity, and stay ahead of the curve.
Global Shop Solutions has been simplifying manufacturing for more than 45 years. During that time, history has shown that those with the best before-andafter stories have made the following 10 functions of ERP software the heartbeat of their business. If you’re ready to take your manufacturing shop floor to the next level, here’s where to begin.
1. Planning & Scheduling
Efficient planning and scheduling is the most important process in manufacturing because it lays the foundation for everything that follows. The Planning & Scheduling application from Global Shop Solutions leads the way in simplifying operations and maximizing productivity by providing real-time load visibility, accurate forecasting and trustworthy scheduling so employees know what to work on next and jobs get finished on time.
Among the software’s numerous standout features, finite/infinite scheduling and its drag-and-drop functionality make it easy to reschedule or reroute jobs to meet customer deadlines. Planners can easily view and schedule employees, work centers, materials and other various elements, including outside processes, to accurately estimate lead times.
2. Shop Floor Data Collection
There’s an old saying in business that you can’t manage what you don’t measure. The Shop Floor Data Collection application measures employee performance and other key metrics in real-time to increase accuracy, efficiency and control. The software automatically collects labor and production data when employees clock in and out of jobs, sequences, machines and facilities. It helps balance labor costs by shift, work order, project or department and guides employees with live dispatch lists. Real-time data provides more control by enabling the identification and resolution of production problems when they occur rather than after the job is complete.
3. Quality Control
It wasn’t too long ago that quality was measured with hand tools and the human eye. Now it’s managed with the ERP Quality Control application that ensures quality in all manufacturing processes. It provides features for managing rework, rejects and scrap. It allows quality personnel to isolate and measure the quality of manufactured or purchased parts based on scrap trends, cost, department, employee, workcenter and other parameters.
Engineers and machinists can create tailored records to meet internal and external quality control requirements, complete with electronic sign-off. For maximum control of part revisions, the software controls each step of the process, including sign-off, department communications and tracking. This feature-laden software captures real-time entry of non-conforming parts so jobs can be halted and a cause and corrective action can be created.
4. Inventory Management
Precise inventory management is a key element for shop floor efficiency. When you don’t have enough materials, jobs get delayed. When you overstock, carrying costs soar. The Inventory application ensures accurate physical inventory management by tracking every aspect of your material needs, including detailed inventory data, while controlling costs. It supports multi-location inventory, usage reports, cycle counting and product lines.
Automated purchasing based on material requirements, planning functions and purchase history helps prevent stockouts and excess purchasing. Easy access to jobs, sales, receivables and performance data further enhances effective shop floor management.
5. Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
Excellent service plays a vital role in building long-term customer relationships and increasing sales. CRM software built into your ERP helps grow sales by supporting on-time delivery and providing all sales order data in one screen. It connects all your data, providing real-time access to details on orders, shipping, job status and communications for customers, prospects and vendors. It also includes invoicing, shipping, quotes and more to streamline customer and prospect management. The CRM application includes tailored sales Dashboards that help organize and maintain the sales pipeline, empowering your sales force. Moreover, it seamlessly integrates with other software to stream data between platforms and enhance overall business efficiency.
6. Document Control
If you’re tired of hunting for paper documents that disappeared or were misfiled, Document Control software is for you. With this application, you can scan documents of any type into your ERP and they will be at your fingertips whenever you need them. This digital format application manages important documents, including process documentation, training materials, CAD files, labels and includes version management. It reduces paper usage on the shop floor by allowing personnel to scan and attach digital files to work orders, sales orders, inventory lists, purchase orders and more. It seamlessly prints a complete set of quality requirements and inspection plans for any job or order, maintains a historical record of changes made to each file and can roll back to previous versions if needed.
7. Tailored ERP
Your ERP software should be tailored to fit the unique needs of your industry and your business. Moreover, it should allow customization to modify standard screens by adding or removing functionality. Tailored screens help maximize efficiency by supporting the creation, scheduling and automation of reports or workflows that go beyond what is included in standard applications.
Tailored ERP software, known as the Global Application Builder (GAB) at our company, enables the creation of applications specific to your manufacturing processes. It optimizes operational efficiency by allowing you to create custom Dashboards to pull data and functionality from various screens into one for seamless work processes.
8. Integrations
The ability to connect ERP software with outside third-party software and other business applications is a game-changer for manufacturers. These types of applications enhance the interoperability of systems, reduce manual data entry and improve speed and accuracy to facilitate simplified and efficient operations across your organization.
Imagine using a CAD/CAM integration to automatically update bills of materials (BOMs) and job orders from CAD files rather than transferring the data manually. Think of the time and cost savings from using Nesting software to make the most efficient cuts on a piece of metal. Whether it’s CAD/CAM, banking, tooling or eHR/payroll integrations, you can expect huge increases in labor and machine efficiency.
9. Dashboards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
These analytics tools facilitate data-driven decisions by enabling you to track, analyze and improve the performance of specific metrics that align with your business goals. They also provide personnel with a single functional screen to manage daily tasks, including labor performance, purchasing, master scheduling and other functionalities. With these applications, you can gain valuable operational insights, identify areas for improvement and work the way you need to with flexible, searchable KPIs and tailored Dashboards that format data the way you need to see it.
10. Job Costing Accounting
This financial module helps guide strategic decisions by pinpointing the profitability of each job. It allows you to measure cost components by Freight, Labor, Overhead, Outside Services,
Other and Material (FLOOOM) and provides a breakdown of costs for inventory, work in progress (WIP) and cost of goods sold (COGS) using FLOOOM components. You can also view the history of finished goods (FG), including old quantities, current transactions, new quantities and the cost for each. From bigpicture summary information to data as simple as a single part number, the software lets you sort, filter and drill down for details that ensure you have the information you need when you need it.
Strive for Continuous Improvement
A well-managed shop floor is integral to meeting production targets, delivering high-quality products, satisfying customer demands and driving overall business growth. Mastering these 10 features will simplify operations, improve productivity and efficiency and make your shop floor a better place to work. However, continuing to make your ERP work for you requires upgrading the skills of your personnel on an ongoing basis. We recommend the following:
• Take the Manufacturing Health Test to identify the areas needing the most improvement (www.globalshopsolutions. com/manufacturing-health-test).
• Conduct a Process Audit to review current processes, pain points and inefficiencies and develop a tailored plan to achieve your desired future state.
• Simplify ERP training with an online Learning Management System to deliver, track and certify training for each user (www.globalshopsolutions.com/erp-software-learningmanagement-system).
• Develop at least one ERP “super user” in your business — someone who knows the ERP system inside and out and can train others throughout the company. Then build a team of employee experts knowledgeable about how ERP operates within their specific departments.
Make these a regular part of your continuous improvement plan and you’ll be amazed at the speed, productivity and innovation with which your workforce gets things done.

US PMI Falls to 46.8 Percent in July
Other Countries Follow the Trend, But the UK and India Continue to Soar
The ISM U.S. Manufacturing PMI® dropped to 46.8 percent in July as U.S. manufacturing saw a fourth straight month of decline and well below the June figure of 48.5 percent.
“Demand remains subdued, as companies show an unwillingness to invest in capital and inventory due to current federal monetary policy and other conditions,” says Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “Production execution was down compared to June, likely adding to revenue declines, putting additional pressure on profitability. Suppliers continue to have capacity, with lead times improving and shortages not as severe.”
According to the report from ISM, U.S. manufacturing activity entered deeper into contraction. Demand was weak again, output declined and inputs stayed generally accommodative. Other key highlights from the report included:
• The New Orders Index dropped further into contraction and the New Export Orders Index also continued in contraction territory.
• The Backlog of Orders Index remained in strong contraction territory
• The Customers’ Inventories Index moved lower to the higher end of ‘too low’.
• Output declined compared to June, with a combined 8.5-percentage point downward impact on the Manufacturing PMI® calculation.
• U.S. manufacturing firms reduced production levels month over month as head-count reductions continued in July.
• Inputs — defined as supplier deliveries, inventories, prices and imports — generally continued to accommodate future demand growth.
US SECTOR REPORT
ISM® GROWTH SECTORS (5): Printing and Related Support Activities; Petroleum and Coal Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Furniture and Related Products; and Nonmetallic Mineral Products.
ISM® CONTRACTION SECTORS (11): Primary Metals; Plastics and Rubber Products; Machinery; Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components; Transportation Equipment; Fabricated Metal Products; Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products; Wood Products; Paper Products; Chemical Products; and Computer and Electronic Products.
ISM® MANUFACTURING AT A GLANCE (US)
JULY 2024
GLOBAL MANUFACTURING
EUROZONE: The HCOB Eurozone Manufacturing PMI held steady at 45.8 percent in July, indicating a continued contraction with 14 consecutive months of declining new orders. Despite a slight upward revision, the sector remains sluggish, with firms cutting jobs and reducing purchasing due to weak demand and rising input costs.
CANADA: Canada’s S&P Global Manufacturing PMI dropped to 47.8 percent in July, marking the biggest decline since December 2023 as market uncertainties and supply chain delays weighed heavily on output and new orders. Employment growth was marginal. Firms faced solid but below-trend input price inflation, leading to modest price increases.
CHINA: China’s Caixin Manufacturing PMI fell to 49.8 percent in July, marking the first decline in factory activity since October 2023, driven by shrinking new orders and lower demand. Despite steady employment numbers, output grew at its slowest pace in nine months. Input cost inflation eased, and selling prices declined due to increased competition.
FRANCE: France’s HCOB Manufacturing PMI dropped to 44.0 percent in July, its sharpest contraction since January, driven by a significant decline in new orders and output. Firms faced rising input costs which resulted in output price increases, with business confidence weakening for the second consecutive month.
GERMANY: Germany’s HCOB Manufacturing PMI registered 43.2 percent in July, signaling a continuing decline in the sector, with accelerated drops in output, new orders, and employment. Input costs stabilized, though firms remain pessimistic about nearterm growth prospects.
INDIA: India’s HSBC Manufacturing PMI edged down to 58.1 percent in July, still showing robust demand and strong production volumes. Despite slowing growth, manufacturers continued to hire to increase employment. Rising input costs led to the biggest increase in output prices in 11 years. The business outlook remained optimistic.
ITALY: Italy’s HCOB Manufacturing PMI rose to 47.4 percent in July, suggesting an easing downturn as output and new orders declined at a more modest pace. Firms faced higher input costs but continued to reduce selling prices. Business outlook was positive but dipped to its lowest level this year.
UNITED KINGDOM: The UK’s S&P Global Manufacturing PMI was revised to 52.1 percent for July, marking the strongest expansion in two years, driven by strong production growth and signs of stability in the export market. Rising input costs led to higher output prices. Employment levels increased for the first time since September 2022.

JULY 2024 ISM® REPORT COMMENTS (US Manufacturers)
“Business is relatively flat — the same volume, but smaller orders.” Chemical Products
“Demand continued to soften into the second half of the year. Supply chain pipelines and inventories remain full, reducing the need for overtime. Geopolitical issues between China and Taiwan as well as the election in November remain weighing concerns.” Transportation Equipment
“Even though we are used to a seasonal reduction in business over the summer, consumer behavior is changing more than normal. Sales are lighter, and customer orders are coming in under forecasts. It seems consumers are starting to pull back on spending.” Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products
“Availability of parts is good, with small exceptions of missing materials here and there. Ordering is still well below typical levels as we continue to burn down inventory of raw goods, with ‘normal’ ordering trends expected to return sometime in the second half of 2024.” Computer and Electronic Products
“It seems that the economy is slowing down significantly. The number of sales calls received from new suppliers is increasing significantly. Our own order backlog is also diminishing. We are hoping for an increase in customer demand, or we will possibly need to make organizational changes.” Machinery
“Unfortunately, our business is experiencing the sharpest decline in order levels in a year. We were well below our budget target in June; as a result, it was the first month this year that we had negative net income.” Fabricated Metal Products
“Business is slowing, and we are taking cost actions.” Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components
“Some markets that are usually unwavering are showing weakness. Weather is the common factor, but only so much.” Nonmetallic Mineral Products
“Our sales forecast for July and August is slow, but we’re making every attempt to remedy that situation. Our medical end-user customers continue to meet their forecasts, which is promising.” Textile Mills
“Elevated financing costs have dampened demand for residential investment. This has reduced our need for component products and inventory.”
