Full Circle
In some ways, it doesn't seem so long ago that the last in-person ABMA Convention was winding down back in March of 2020 in St. Petersburg, Fla. In other ways, it seems like a lifetime. At the time, no one likely suspected that the COVID-19 topic would still be the central issue 24 months later. The recent Omicron surge was certainly another lesson in trying to predict the end of the pandemic. However, against my better judgment, I keep looking for signs to get beyond pandemic life and look forward to some predictability and routine. So as we now approach March, the ABMA is set to host the real-live, in-person version of the ABMA Convention in Bonita Springs, Fla., and it feels like a nice step toward something familiar. I’d like to think that returning to begin again so close to where we ended, that it’s a sign we’re coming full circle on this thing. At least, that’s what I hope. The headlines change so fast now, but running through the economic reports for this issue, it is refreshing to hear signs of supply chain improvement for certain regions. Additionally, it seems some of the labor issues are easing slightly as Omicron cases are subsiding in many areas. It has taken a while, but Brushware finally has been directly impacted as we were a little short-staffed on this one due to COVID-19. But, there’s always a way forward and we’re pleased to present our biggest ABMA Preview issue since we took over ownership. We’ve expanded the Global Brush Directory and we’re now well over 350 brushware manufacturers worldwide. Of course, we have full coverage of the convention complete with a brief guide on things to do in Bonita Springs. And as always, we are proud to present the expanded end-of-the-year 2021 US import-export industry data with a five-year chart history to highlight the ongoing trends. Also, be sure to check out the profile on ABMA Emerging Leader chair Kevin White from the Industrial Brush Company. Plus, Lisa Anderson offers her column on the advantages and opportunities in structured planning and strategy that should get business leaders thinking. We hope you find this to be a great issue and for those that can make it, I look forward to seeing you in Bonita Springs ... maybe even at the beach!

Boucherie Launches New Website
ZAHORANSKY Exits Interbrush
On December 8, 2021, ZAHORANSKY’s Ulrich Roth and Robert Dous released a statement indicating that the company would not be participating in the Interbrush tradeshow going forward. The statement cited several reasons for the decision including the four-year interval cycle, limited benefit relative to the cost for ZAHORANSKY and the short duration of the show.
Boucherie has been building brush-making machinery for nearly 100 years. Nevertheless, innovating and developing new technologies for customers has always been at the heart of the company’s approach. It seemed only logical that the drive to stay up to speed should also be reflected in Boucherie's corporate identity and online presence. In December of 2021, Boucherie introduced new branding and a new website. This revamped look and feel, with fresh colors and finetuned graphics, underlines Boucherie's commitment for the future as a world leader in brush-making machinery. Boucherie designs and produces cutting-edge engineering solutions for the manufacture of oral care, personal care and household brushes. Looking for specific brush-making equipment? On the new website, one can easily navigate through a broad range of machines by category and machine type. Of course, Boucherie is available to advise on the perfect machinery for any project. ZAHORANSKY plans to shift their budget and manpower to “develop our products and solutions even more consistently in line with customer requirements and to launch them to the market in a timely manner.” And with that new approach, ZAHORANSKY is working on a concept for an event on their premises. In reaction to the announcement, Daniel Strowitzki, CEO of Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik and Messe GmbH & Co. (FWTM) responded with a statement saying, “We deeply regret the decision of our longstanding exhibitor and business partner. However, as a company that knows what it means to weigh financial aspects and take strategic decisions, we respect it. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks for 43 years of excellent collaboration and a relationship built on trust.” He went on to say the loss of ZAHORANSKY had prompted the organization to initiate an in-depth dialog with associations and exhibitors to determine the future content strategy of Interbrush. Additionally, extensive preparations continue for the next Interbrush, and he expressed confidence that in 2024, Interbrush would offer “a first-rate event to all participants.”
Franklin Automation Now Part of Neyret
On September 27, 2021, after 31 years of operating as a family business, the Kigyos family sold a majority share of Franklin Automation to the Neyret Group of France. Neyret Group is also a family-owned business and one of the world’s premier suppliers of advanced automation systems. Specifically, Neyret is known as a highly successful supplier of high-speed intermittent and continuous motion assembly and testing systems with two modern machine-building operations in France, a sales office in China and now a third machine building operation in North America.
FEIBP’S 2021 Q4 SURVEY REPORT The FEIBP released their European Brush Industry Survey Report for the fourth quarter of 2021 in early February. The latest report is based on input from 37 completed surveys out of total of 292 invitations. Industry firms surveyed were asked about performance in both domestic and export markets and technical brushes led the way at home with more than 52 percent reporting five percent or more growth in the segment versus the same quarter in 2020. On the export side, the hygiene brush segment was the strongest as 42 percent reported growth above five percent in the quarter. The weakest product category in both the domestic and export markets was the art brush sector reported at just over 11 percent for growth (domestic and export).
2021 Q4 PRODUCT SALES VS 2020 Q4 (DOMESTIC)
The company works closely with many industries including medical devices and pharmaceuticals. It was due to the significant growth in these particular customer segments that made it imperative they find the right domestic partner to bolster their sales and service offerings in the region. Going forward, Frank Kigyos and his brother Kevin Kigyos have both retained minority shares in Franklin and will continue managing its operations. Furthermore, they will participate in all corporate decision-making at the board level. This is a significant development for Franklin Automation as it continues offering the personal service and price points of a smaller automation house while still providing the financial security and collaborative advanced engineering strength of a world-class, multi-national automation group.
2021 Q4 PRODUCT SALES VS 2020 Q4 (EXPORTS)
As for the loyal customers in the brush, broom and mop industry, Franklin Automation will continue its representation of the Wohler, Roth and Giori companies in the US and Canada.

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS DUPONT FILAMENTS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS For more than 80 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.
HEALTH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - TOOTHBRUSH FILAMENTS The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, DuPont Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of DuPont™ Tynex®(nylon 612) and DuPont™ Herox®(nylon 610) . Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using DuPont filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, DuPont Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio BEAUTY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - FINE FILAMENTS DuPont™ Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from DuPont’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair. EFFICIENCY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – ABRASIVE FILAMENTS Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking for
ways to increase productivity. The emphasis is on getting more square feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extremes of the PH scale. The technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range that these filaments can be used in. Brushes made with these filaments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. DuPont™ Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need. CREATIVITY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – PAINTBRUSH FILAMENTS When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.
YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS
Recognition for being the global leader in filaments comes from our customers. You inspire us to make a difference in the world. We will continue to advance our innovations because we believe your BRUSH deserves the best FILAMENTS. 1-833-338-7668 | www.dupont.com

machinery SPOTLIGHT
AEOLA: A New Chapter In Brush Manufacturing Technology With the Aeola, Boucherie has developed a totally different machine concept for household and personal care brush manufacturing: compact, simple and extremely efficient. Traditional double header machines of today take up lots of floor space, and often run at less than their full potential because operators can’t keep up. An extremely fast running single tool machine is more compact, will run at a higher efficiency and will be much simpler to maintain. This machine uses Boucherie’s most innovative technology, which allows the combination of a very high tufting speed with a maximum of trimming/flagging time. This is possible because the independent brush holders only spend as much time as required in each station, and the time savings can be used to obtain a better product finish. Aeola is laid out as a compact carrousel with very good accessibility for maintenance and change-over. There is one filling tool that runs at a very high speed, without stopping between consecutive brushes. Drilling is done by means of several drill units to have an extended drill life. Optional electronic trimming, flagging and beating are arranged around the same carrousel, so that brushes always stay in the same clamp throughout the whole process. The brush holders have 5 axes of movement, all controlled by servomotors. With the full 180° of tuft flare possible in both directions, this machine is extremely versatile and quick to change over with a minimum of mechanical changes. Special brush holder fixtures for full round toilet brushes, full round hair brushes and Scandinavian style dish brushes are available.
14 | www.brushwaremag.com
The filling tool is of a completely new and simple design, with extremely few parts, derived from the most recent toothbrush manufacturing technology. There is no housing and there is no sliding of the tool, because the main tool parts are bolted directly to sturdy levers, eliminating any need for lubrication. The extremely rigid construction and smart design of the drive systems allow very high tufting speeds. Eliminating the start/stop cycles of the main motor, and equipped with the newest generation of electronics and handling systems, Aeola is also very energy efficient. The Aeola is available in different degrees of automation: from a drill and fill machine with manual loading up to a fully automatic brush manufacturing cell with automatic loading and integrated trimming. supply CHAIN
Proactive Planning to Grow and Scale By Lisa Anderson According to FactSet Insight, revenue growth is predicted at 7.5 percent for 2022 which is substantial when considering it is following record-breaking growth in 2021. Clients and colleagues are seeing record increases in sales revenues and pricing. The companies that have product and can satisfy customer needs are continuing to grow faster than the average as they take market share from the competition, whereas the companies struggling and waiting for supply chain disruptions to ease are deteriorating. The strong are getting stronger, and the weak are getting weaker. There are several operational and supply chain priorities required to be ready to absorb additional sales. A critical one is to have base planning and scheduling processes with an eye to collaborative and concurrent planning processes with programs such as SIOP/ S&OP (sales, inventory and operations planning), what-if scenario planning and advanced insights into down-the-line impacts. In essence, the best way to say “yes” to profitable revenue growth is to have the ability to rapidly assess capabilities and impacts and be assured of your ability to execute. Base planning processes include demand (forecasting), capacity (machinery, equipment, resources, suppliers, storage, transportation), production, inventory, replenishment, material and logistics planning. These positions are often seen as analyst level and are underappreciated given the gravity of the impact on the ability to successfully grow and scale. Clients start to appreciate the relevance of these processes as the strategic aspects are incorporated with SIOP and IBP (integrated business planning processes). As executives realize that when they create a predictable revenue forecast (at a product or customer group level) and determine the best and most profitable way to fulfill it, their service levels increase, lead times decrease, profitability and efficiencies soar, working capital accelerates, and team engagement increases, their interest is peaked. It is no longer enough to plan in a bubble. As supply chain disruptions occur, material shortages and extended lead times impact production schedules. As COVID causes absence rates
16 | www.brushwaremag.com
to peak or the Great Resignation impacts the production workforce, production schedules change, customers are prioritized, and logistics plans are thwarted. The base planning processes cannot work in silos. Instead, immediate what-if scenarios should be reviewed, down-the-line impacts should be evaluated, and options assessed (offloading volume to a supply chain partner or using a backup supplier). Planning has become strategic and should go from customers to suppliers and include the links in between the two. For example, a building products client recently ran out of a critical material. They quickly assessed which products and customers would be impacted and were able to determine the degree to which they should pivot to a more expensive alternate material that would meet customer specs. Based on this what-if scenario, they were able to reallocate manufacturing resources, replan trucks to replenish their service centers, adjust orders with customers to make sure priority needs were met and evaluate storage impacts so that they could divert loads to nearby branches as needed. They served their strategic customers when the competition couldn’t, thereby gaining customer loyalty and expanding sweet spot business. By having a monthly focus on strategy with a SIOP process, the executive team is agile and able to pivot quickly with changing customer needs and end-to-end supply chain impacts. In addition, by focusing on a solid planning base, the right product is delivered at the right location at the right time at the right profit margin. The strategic and tactical are constantly realigning, optimized and in sync. The strong grow and scale, and the weak shrink. Lisa Anderson is the founder and president of LMA Consulting Group Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in manufacturing strategy and end-to-end supply chain transformation that maximizes the customer experience and enables profitable, scalable, dramatic business growth. She recently released a new “Emerging Above & Beyond” eBook download that offers 21 insights from experts in manufacturing, supply chain and technology. KEVIN B. WHITE
COMPANY: The Industrial Brush Company, Inc. LOCATION: Fairfield, New Jersey JOB TITLE: Mechanical Engineer
18 | www.brushwaremag.com
What year did you start in the industry and how did you get started? I started with Industrial Brush in 2019 after deciding to move back to New Jersey from South Carolina, where I had completed a master’s program in Automotive Engineering at Clemson University. I had always had an interest in being a part of a small company after being in much larger companies in both the aerospace and automotive engineering world. From what I have seen, I believe there to be a much greater chance of innovation and growth within smaller companies. When my thengirlfriend, now fiancé (I guess she hasn’t tired of me yet) mentioned that Industrial Brush was looking for a new engineer, I jumped at the opportunity!
Favorite part of working in the brushware industry? I find the number of industries we serve and processes that brushes are involved in to be staggering. It’s certainly a larger number than I would have thought before entering the industry. The infinite amount of subtle variations to a product allows for so much creativity. The unique challenges that this presents for things like the design, manufacturing, logistics and organization keep me engaged as an engineer.
What is your proudest career or company accomplishment? It’s not something I’ve thought about in all honesty. I’m not sure I have any one moment specifically that stands above the rest to be proud of but I don’t seem to get tired of being able to work with different teams within the organization on various projects that continue our improvement process.
Key challenges presented by the pandemic and how is the Industrial Brush Company solving for those challenges? I think the biggest challenges came from the side effects of the pandemic (no pun intended). The reality of dealing with the pandemic from a personnel standpoint is that leaders within companies were forced to make quick decisions without all of the information at hand.
Anyone who had to make these decisions had to hope it was the best one for the employees and the business and keep chugging along. A unique challenge to our industry and manufacturing at large is how supply chains have been affected as a side effect. We have had to dedicate a significant amount more time to allocating the raw materials needed and we’ve had to get creative with some of the raw materials used. As we continue this, I think we will be able to have enough information to use big data technologies to further automate the procurement process. Leveraging the creative solutions that we’ve been forced to come up with can benefit lean manufacturing processes. Automation in general has been a hot topic in the industry to the point of almost becoming a buzzword. That being said, during the pandemic we saw new ways to cross-train employees through automation so the team can more effectively rely on each other or fill in for different roles as needed. One of the ways we’ve been able to achieve this has been through evaluating how we interact with our jobs and machinery, from computer software to CNC machinery, to hand tools. We identified pain points in jobs and processes across the company and applied automation principles where we could. Automating certain tasks has allowed the team time to learn new things and to be able to spend more of their collective time performing value-added tasks.
Are there any new products or initiatives for the Industrial Brush Company that you would like to share? We make brushes!
Recruiting skilled workers overall and also young workers has been stated as a concern in the industry. How do you think that is best addressed? All workers are skilled workers and they all add value to the companies they work within. Generally speaking, the attitudes have shifted through the generations and I feel that companies need to make concerted efforts to truly invest in the employees. Putting effort into investing in the development of employees will in my opinion yield substantial long-term benefits. It’s hard to imagine not capturing prospects when they see that a company offers competitive pay, benefits and a legitimate no-stringsattached growth opportunity. The other part of that

equation is retention. Safe to say, most everyone wants to feel like they are contributing. A key way that can be achieved is by allowing for open dialogue for twoway idea-sharing. The best machining ideas I’ve seen implemented have come from a machinist on the floor and not an engineering book.
Do you have any key leadership tips out there for younger people in the industry looking to ascend to a leadership role? A key piece of advice I received from a mentor was to start asking questions and never stop asking questions. It’s one of the most effective ways to facilitate a conversation, actively engage all participants and learn. The danger of that is it’s a very fine line between progress and learning and semantic debate.
Launching the ABMA Emerging Leaders group during the pandemic must have been challenging. Are you feeling good about the progress of the initiative? I’m someone whose aspirations often outpace my abilities, personally and professionally. I have a harder time focusing on the minutia and being a taskmaster than I do thinking about the long-term aspect of things. Because of that, I think that I expected to see the group flourishing with dozens of active members at this point. Leadership in ABMA has done a fantastic job of identifying a problem, then creating and supporting a great group of people to work on the solution. The active membership in the Emerging Leader’s program is doing an amazing job of developing the group. All that to say: While I was hoping for more rapid growth, I’m tremendously hopeful for the future of the group because of the talented people involved who I’m fortunate to learn from.
What can we expect to see from the EL at the convention in March and do you envision in-person events for the group in the future? Speaking to your previous question regarding employee recruitment and retention, the Emerging Leaders will be facilitating a round table on the “future of industry and the workplace 2.0.” This will be a meeting open to all ABMA members and is intended to be our in-person
20 | www.brushwaremag.com
kickoff. The ABMA website has an article detailing the round table discussion topics and we believe that topics will generate lots of interesting discussion. Outside of that, the Emerging Leaders will be having its own small “welcome/meet and greet” at the start of the convention for new, eligible members. Our future plans do involve more in-person meetings but we think that the most widely reaching benefits will come from programs that are accessible to all employees within the industry and not just those who are able to attend conventions.
What do you like to do outside of work? I love working on my cars, watches, computers and anything else mechanical. I spend a lot of time tinkering with engineering projects or watching and learning about new things in the mechanical engineering world. I enjoy playing chess and video games, watching sports or watching YouTube videos that run the gamut from educational like Engineering Explained to entertainment like Linus Tech Tips or highlights of It’s Always Sunny. I spend most afternoons hanging out with my fiancé Lindsey, our two pit bulls Charles Barkley and Archer, and our cat Luke Skywhiskers, who is usually busy trying to make the dogs his minions.
Are there sports and/or teams that you follow? I’m not sure I should admit this in public, but the New York Giants. Lindsey and I are also big fans of Gritty, so I guess we root for the Flyers by proxy? I loved playing basketball growing up but I missed seeing MJ play and I never got to see Kobe play in person so I’m hoping I’ll be able to see a talent like Lebron play in person before he retires. Being a golfer, I admittedly love seeing Tiger get to play golf with Charlie.

WEDNESDAY: Meet The Pros Roundtable The ABMA’s Educational Institute roundtable session is titled Workplace 2.0 – We Are All In This Together and is sponsored and led by the ABMA Emerging Leaders group. It will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at the Hyatt Coconut Point at 3:00 p.m. local time in the CALUSA meeting room. Envision a room with six tables and an opportunity for shared discussion over a 90-minute window. Each discussion lasts 13 minutes followed by a two-minute passing period. The format is completely open and participants are encouraged to bring their best ideas and best practices to share. Visit one table or all six. Our “pros” come from within our industry and are all members of the ABMA Emerging Leaders, a group of dedicated young brush industry professionals. The “pros” will come prepared with a short 1-2 minute presentation on their topic to get the discussion started. Topics are not related to specific products or machinery, but for 2022 are focused on current demographic and age-related issues that are industry-wide and affect everyone.

THURSDAY: FUNDAMISM KEYNOTE Paul J. Long is a motivational speaker and consultant that has challenged the corporate landscape for over a decade while engaging audiences around the globe. As the 2016 Fan of the Year for the Kansas City Royals, Long’s shenanigans have been featured in media outlets like ESPN, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. Through his concept of “Fundamism,” infectious spirit and unique take on F.U.N. in the workplace, Long has provided memorable experiences at hundreds of events while championing pediatric cancer research. Long will stretch everyone in your organization to think differently about how they approach business and life. In one of his YouTube videos, Long says we all know someone that walks into a room and brightens it up. To the contrary, we all know someone that leaves the room and brightens it up! The question is which one are you and with whom do your surround yourself? His fundamism philosophy can be defined as the fundamentals of a F.U.N. and optimistic lifestyle. He believes strongly that gravitating more toward the things that give you strength, as opposed to the things that don’t will provide you more F.U.N., joy and fulfillment in life. In practice, his F.U.N .philosophy is “F” for Foundation, “U” for Understanding Other’s Perspectives and “N” for Next Steps. The Foundation is the first step in maximizing workplace or personal fulfillment is through self-reflection and identifying

New Risks in
Workers’ Compensation
By Phillip M. Perry Employers find themselves navigating a more complex regulatory environment as they try to reduce their workers’ compensation premiums and claim costs. States are introducing legislation that expands coverage to a greater spectrum of conditions and presumes workplace origination for COVID infections. Businesses are responding by reaching out to workers to preempt problems and bolster safety programs.
32 | www.brushwaremag.com
Just as many employers are getting workers’ compensation premiums and related costs under control, the COVID pandemic is introducing new hazards to the regulatory terrain. While claims are increasing for mental distress and pandemicrelated accidents, state regulatory agencies are expanding coverage to the presumption of the workplace as the origination of infections, medical marijuana use and other novel areas. “Workers’ compensation law is becoming more complicated for employers in many states,” says Jeffrey M. Adelson, General Counsel at Adelson McLean (www.AdelsonMcLean.com). “The regulations are undergoing change all the time.” Adelson and other attorneys cite these areas of concern: • • • • • • • • • •
Presumption laws for COVID infections Costly “long COVID” care Mental health treatments Medical marijuana coverage Opioid effect on accidents Injuries by inexperienced replacement workers Independent contractor coverage Ergonomic injuries by home workers Comorbidities Mega claims

Many of the above concerns arise from, or are worsened by, the pandemic. “Recent regulatory and legislative trends at the state level continue to be led by COVID,” says Randy Sieberg, president of Workers Compensation Consultants (www.workcompconsultant.com). “Some states have enacted so-called presumption legislation, to the effect that workers are presumed to have contracted their COVID cases at the workplace.” Prior to COVID, he adds, the burden of proof was always on the injured worker for a workers’ comp claim. Now it is often up to the employer to prove an infection happened somewhere other than the workplace.
Long COVID Also looming are costly claims for so-called “long haul COVID,” a term referring to illnesses that linger for years. “I think it’s too early to tell what injuries or disease may ultimately result from COVID,” said Daniel C. Free, President and General Counsel, Insurance Audit & Inspection Co (www.insuranceaudit.com). “The infections could have long-tail effects. Consider what happened with asbestosis or black lung disease. There are still cases out there materializing even though the basic exposure was eliminated a generation ago. So I’m not sure I’m ready to close the door on COVID even if we vaccinate everybody.” On the plus side of the COVID equation, claims are not as common as feared. “All the piles and piles of COVID claims
people were expecting, never really happened,” says James J. Moore, president of J&L Risk Management Consultants, Raleigh, N.C. (www.cutcompcosts.com). “We were expecting six or seven times as many claims as we got in or that we know occurred.” A big reason that claims haven’t mushroomed is that most employers have gone out of their way to protect their employees. And many employees are still working from home, reducing their chances of exposure. “Most employees are covered by some form of health insurance so even if they can’t establish that it happened at work, they’re still covered,” says Free. Another plus: Claims to date have not been all that costly. “The average cost on COVID claims is less than $5,000,” says Dennis Tierney, National Director of Workers’ Compensation Claims for Marsh, the insurance broker and risk advisory firm. “In contrast, the average cost for a typical workers’ comp claim—combining medical and lost time—is about $20,000.” However, Tierney says it remains to be seen what the effect of costly COVID hospitalizations will be, noting that while recently hospitalizations were running at 5% of cases, 20% of that 5% took place in ICUs with costly 12-day average stays.
Mental Health COVID has led to other social conditions that affect workers’ comp. Among them is mental distress. Sieberg points out that some states have started to add workers’ comp coverage for post-traumatic stress disorder on the part of employees who were put into work environments that were never expected to be very hazardous but turned out to be so because of COVID. Examples of such jobs are those for which the worker interfaces with the public, but the regulations may embrace a larger universe as time passes. Long absences from the traditional work environment can also lead to medical conditions. “Mental health issues may increase among people who have been working from home for a long time without social interaction,” says Moore. “Facebook and LinkedIn only go so far. That may lead to the greater need for treatment and higher workers’ comp rates.” A related problem: Employees who have migrated to home offices tend to grab the nearest desk and chair regardless of ergonomic concerns. Injuries result. “Employees who work from home can have workers’ comp claims,” says Free. “If they can show that an injury was in the course and scope of their employment, it would be compensable. I could see an employer disputing it, but I don’t think it would go very far.”
34 | www.brushwaremag.com
What to do? Employers are taking action such as conducting virtual ergonomic reviews and providing cash allowances for better quality chairs and furniture with adjustable keyboard and monitor positions. “Safety and risk management budgets have become very large,” says Moore. “Safety investment has increased exponentially for home offices because employers don’t want to end up paying out claims.”
Drug Abuse Pandemic stresses have also led to a growing use of marijuana— and that can lead to impairment and workplace accidents. Yet proving impairment can be difficult. “If somebody gets hurt at work, to dispute a worker’s comp claim, you’d have to establish that somehow there was a nexus between the person’s use of marijuana and the injury,” says Free. “You’d have to show they were high at the time they got hurt.” The topic is more complicated if marijuana is being used to treat a medical condition in a state where it has been legalized for such purposes. “Some state legislatures and courts are struggling with the marijuana issue as it relates to workers’ comp,” says Sieberg. “If marijuana is used in a treatment program and has a positive effect on an injured employee, should it be covered? In many cases, the answer is still unclear.” Employers need to consult with their attorneys for insight into the nexus between regulation and workplace practices. Addiction to opioids, as well as the usage of other drugs, can lead to workplace absences and illnesses that require medical attention. Employers are responding by introducing zerotolerance workplace drug policies. “Many companies have pretty strict rules about drug use today,” says Free. “They don’t care what you do out of work, but if you come to work high or drunk or on drugs, they have the right to kick you off campus right away.”
Some employers are introducing wellness initiatives to mitigate the growth of comorbidities. A recent report from The Horton Group, an insurance, employee benefits and risk advisory firm, recommended addressing chronic health conditions and improving overall staff well-being to “reduce the severity of workers’ compensation claims and maintain low comorbidity rates.”
Mega Claims Closely affiliated with comorbidities are another workers’ comp headache: mega claims that typically incur losses of $3 million or more. “In the context of workers’ compensation, a mega claim is typically a seven figure-claim resulting from some sort of fall or motor vehicle accident resulting in injury to the central nervous system or multiple injured body parts,” says Tierney. “We have seen an uptick in these ‘mega’ workers’ compensation claims over the last number of years for a number of reasons, and we continue to watch and see if COVID will add to this trend.” “I would say technology and medical advancements are the main reasons why we are seeing an uptick in mega claims,” says Tierney. “Not only are injured workers more likely to survive severe injuries today due to these advancements, but they also often require more medical interventions, like organ
Supervisors are also being trained in the difficult skill of spotting possible drug use. “Somebody can be an addict, but they don’t look wasted or like a drunk or stoned person,” says Free. “They look normal. You don’t even know until they have an overdose.” A related issue is that of over-treatment with drugs. The poor handling of workers’ comp claims can lead to drug addiction, so more employers are taking a hands-on approach to monitoring the prescriptions given to their personnel. “You have to see where the money’s going and keep tight control of it,” says Adelson. “Every employer needs to ask, ‘If one of my people gets hurt, what process will we use to monitor the medical treatment?’ You want to have the best control you can.”

COVID-produced stress has also sparked an increase in long-term health complications called comorbidities: the simultaneous presence of two or more medical diagnoses. Combinations of anxiety, substance abuse, hypertension, depression, obesity, diabetes and other conditions can lead to costly treatments that last for months or years. A recent study from the NCCI found that workers’ comp claims involving comorbidities have nearly tripled since 2000 and can be twice as costly as other claims.

The medical costs associated with injury care continue to climb and will, in turn, continue to drive up the cost of workers’ comp claims.” Another reason for the spike in mega claims: treatment delays. “People are finally getting medical treatment they need after avoiding going to the doctor’s office for so long,” says Moore. “I’ve been seeing quite a few mega claims because people are delaying treatment for something like back surgery for 18 months. By the time they get treatment the condition is worse.” Mega claims can develop slowly when they arise from delayed treatment. From the employer’s point of view, mega claims are expensive, complex and lengthy, noted the Horton report. “Such claims can leave lasting impacts on your organization by way of hefty costs, lost time, and the potential for severe reputational damage.” The danger, though, may be largely avoidable. “It’s critical to ramp up your safety efforts to combat such claims— particularly when it comes to preventing falls, motor vehicle accidents, and struck-by incidents.” Claims management can also play a crucial role. “Advances in analytics and predictive modeling have helped insureds and insurers identify claims that have the potential to be ‘mega’ a lot earlier on in the process than in years past,” notes Tierney. “As a result, claims are being managed and reserved for at a lot higher thresholds earlier in the claim lifecycle.”
Inexperienced Workers
The pandemic has created one more headache for workers’ compensation administrators: The Great Resignation has created a vacuum in the nation’s work roles. “People not coming back to work can contribute to lower workers’ comp costs in the short run but higher costs later on as employers hire replacements more susceptible to injury,” says Free. “When employers restaff, they often take on new and inexperienced people. Because they lack the required skills and training, they end up getting hurt.” The problem of unskilled workers escalates when the scarcity of individuals to train new recruits leads to instruction by Zoom. And that is exactly what is happening now. “We are seeing rashes
of claims from people who are operating a certain machine for the first time,” says Moore. “The old rule of thumb tells us that 90% of accidents happen during the first week a person uses a machine. So we’re seeing a rash of claims because of the learning curves.” According to a recent survey from the Golden Triangle Business Roundtable in Texas, employees with less than five years of experience contribute to 43% of overall workplace injuries. Such accidents can be particularly costly in riskier environments. “The construction and manufacturing industries have the most problematic workers’ comp claims experience,” says Sieberg. “Many of the claims tend to be larger ones, and some are at the catastrophic level. A carpenter falling off a roof will likely incur significant injuries. Such a claim may cost the employer 20 or 25 points in experience rating. And that will continue on for a typical three-year experience period.”
Positive Trends
Despite greater challenges in the workers’ comp environment, there is good news. A growing use of outpatient services is helping to reduce costs. So is the employment of telehealth and telemedicine—technologies that received tremendous boosts from the COVID pandemic. “I expect telemedicine to become more and more common with employers,” says Sieberg. “It allows for faster response time for injured workers to get in front of qualified medical providers without having to make appointments or travel to physician offices. It also helps with remote case management, easier access to medication, and a quicker return to work by injured employees. The net effect can be a reduction in medical costs and ultimately in overall claims.” And then there is a favorable trend in safety conditions. Employers have made great strides in reducing the risk of trips and falls, and boosting ergonomics and increasing the safety of machinery. “Workplace safety and claim management continue to be the two areas that an individual employer has the greatest control over when it comes to putting a cap on workers’ comp costs,” says Sieberg. “Good practices in both areas can save money.”

US Factory Activity Dips for Second Straight Month
Germany Ends Five-Month Decline with a 2.4 percent PMI Increase in January
Despite a 20-month streak of growth for the overall economy, ISM’s® January Report On Business® showed a 1.2 percent drop to a PMI of 57.6 percent for US manufacturers. While still in positive territory, the figure was the second straight month to register a decline and it also represented the lowest mark since November 2020. “Manufacturing performed well for the 20th straight month, with demand and consumption registering month-overmonth growth,” says Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “Meeting demand remains a challenge, due to hiring difficulties and labor turnover at all tiers. For the third month in a row, Business Survey Committee panelists’ comments suggest month-over-month improvement on hiring, offset by backfilling required to address employee turnover at a higher rate, supplier performance and improvements in the transportation sector.”
materials, difficulties in transporting products and lack of direct labor on factory floors due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant. Notably, quit rates and early retirements are hindering reliable consumption.
ISM® REPORT COMMENTS (US Manufacturers) Panel sentiment remains strongly optimistic, with seven positive growth comments for every cautious comment, up from December’s ratio of 6-to-1.
According to the report, the US manufacturing sector remains in a demand-driven, supply chain-constrained environment, but January was the third straight month with indications of improvements in labor resources and supplier delivery performance. Still, there were shortages of critical intermediate
• “Transportation restrictions and a lack of supplier manpower continue to create significant shortages that limit our production. This, in turn, limits what we can supply to customers, as well as on-time delivery.” Machinery • “Transportation, labor and inflation issues continue to hamper our supply chain and ability to service our customers. Fortunately, it’s also hampering our competition as well. Ultimately, the biggest impact is at the consumer level, as (price increases) continue to get passed through.” Transportation Equipment

• “Integrated circuit availability is really causing issues. Shortages of raw materials and other electronic materials continue to hamper deliveries to our customers.” Miscellaneous Manufacturing • “The supply chain crunch may be loosening a bit; however, specific original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts and equipment now have lead times that we have not experienced before.” Nonmetallic Mineral Products“We are experiencing massive interruptions to our production due to supplier COVID-19 problems limiting their manufacturing of key raw (materials) like steel cans and chemicals.” Chemical Products • “Lack of skilled production personnel, either from missing work due to (COVID-19) variants or leaving for better opportunities, making it more difficult to complete work. Working off a backlog.” Fabricated Metal Products • “While there has been some improvement in materials making it to our factories and logistics centers, we are still constrained by (a lack of ) qualified labor. Orders so far are not being cancelled, but we are concerned that customers may be losing patience.” Computer and Electronic Products • “Our suppliers are having difficulty meeting scheduled releases as their suppliers experience delays and shortages, so lead times and inventories are struggling, resulting in lost production.” Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products • “Strong backlog of orders coming into the new year. Potential to beat target revenue, depending on availability of purchased product.” Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components • “Bookings continue to increase as we are still dealing with a shortage of labor and supply chain issues.” Furniture and Related Products

GLOBAL MANUFACTURING EUROZONE: IHS Markit reported a Eurozone Manufacturing PMI of 58.7 percent for January. This was up 0.7 percent from the previous month and the data also showed significant increases in production, new orders and employment for manufacturing activity in the region. According to IHS, manufacturers in the region are coping with the current Omicron surge better than previous COVID-19 waves. Supply chain delays seem to be on the decline and manufacturers are expressing optimism on the future business outlook. GERMANY: IHS Markit/BME reported a good bump for German manufacturers in January with a 2.4 percent monthover-month increase to record a PMI reading of 59.8 percent. The new figure ended five months of decline as factory activity improved due to increases in new orders and improvements in supply. Employment followed to increase for a second straight month. Business optimism improved for a third straight month. ITALY: IHS Markit reported a January PMI of 58.3 percent for Italian manufacturers – off 3.7 percent from December and the lowest mark since February of 2021. The drop was driven by slower growth in output and new orders. Supply chain delays and labor issues were cited as the big issues, but on the plus side, domestic and foreign markets both saw strong demand. UNITED KINGDOM: According to IHS Markit/CIPS, UK manufacturing register a 57.3 percent PMI for January, down from 57.9 percent in the previous month. New orders slowed, but output and employment increased for manufacturers. Delays in the supply chain continue to put a drag on manufacturing activity, but signs of improvement in that area are starting to manifest. INDIA: IHS Markit reported a 54.0 percent PMI for Indian manufacturers in January. This was down 1.5 percent from the previous month and represented a second straight month of decline. Disruptions due to the pandemic had the biggest impact on the region as output and new orders slowed. Still, manufacturing for India remains strong from a historical perspective. Confidence in the business outlook fell to a 19-month low based on concerns about inflation and COVID-19 uncertainty. CHINA: The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI dropped to 49.1 percent for January – well below expectations and the lowest mark since February 2020. This is third time in the last six months that Chinese manufacturing has dipped into contraction territory. The COVID surge and strict government restrictions had the biggest impact as output and new orders saw steep declines. New export orders also dove along with employment levels. However, inflation and selling prices showed signs of a peak. Despite the troubling figures, business optimism improved based on projected improvement in market conditions and positive signs that supply chain issues were improving. www.brushwaremag.com | 61
