Building the Community
We are pleased to once again present the Annual Brushware Buyers’ Guide and Supplier & Manufacturer Directory. This is our fourth edition since Goodwin World Media took over Brushware magazine back in 2019. This is my favorite edition to work on as I enjoy seeing the scope of companies, products, materials and machines available. I’m a bit of a data nerd and I like to sometimes take a look at the macro view. And of course, I am always pleased to see the list of companies in our directory continue to grow each year. That growth is key as Brushware endeavors to support the overall brush, broom, mop and paint products industry and build the community. The print directory is a vital resource in itself, but we also package all listings with the online page profiles. Our traffic and engagement on the www.brushwaremag.com website and our social channels continue to trend upward. Additionally, the number of valid inquiries we get really started to accelerate in early 2021. We of course enjoy receiving new subscription requests, on-boarding new advertisers and certainly pushing leads out to our family of companies. Beyond that, we are always happy to answer any questions and hopefully get people interested in the industry pointed in the right direction. That is core to our mission — Brushware is here to support and build the community. And along those lines, there is one easy way all of our readers can help us in that goal. Building our overall presence is best assisted by linkbacks, so if you have a website, we appreciate it if you can take the time to have your website developer link to www.brushwaremag.com as an industry resource. We are always happy to post relevant industry press releases and provide those vital links, so we welcome your support in promoting Brushware on your site as well. Overall, we have a great issue, with a lot of information on dealing with the current inflationary conditions as our feature from Phillip M. Perry details the landscape and offers practical advice to navigate. Doubling down, columnist Lisa Anderson offers a specific strategy on the same topic with great real world examples. Thank you for your readership and please enjoy this issue of Brushware. As always, I welcome your feedback.

Interclean Amsterdam 2022 Celebrates Successful Return Interclean Amsterdam came to an end on May 13, 2022, after four sun-drenched days. After a four-year break, an international ensemble of 669 exhibitors and 25,886 visitors from 125 countries came together at RAI Amsterdam for the return to a live event. Apart from the focus on a reunion for the industry, there were plenty of opportunities to do business, experience product innovations and attend the extensive knowledge program. Particular attention was paid to young talent, cleaning in the healthcare sector and updates for facility managers. Anyone who wishes to relive the experience can do so by re-watching various keynote speaker sessions via Clean Connect. “We can look back on four very successful days, with a positive vibe in the exhibition halls. Everyone was extremely happy to finally meet each other again in person,” says Robert Stelling, Director Interclean Global Events. “We received many positive responses, from business contacts who were pleasantly surprised about the international nature of the exhibition, exhibitors who were able to make many more new contacts or close new orders and speakers who talked enthusiastically about the large audiences and their willingness to interact. This week has demonstrated that the power of personal interaction is extremely valuable. I am also proud of the Healthcare Cleaning Forum where we bridged the gap between infection prevention and cleaning. It was also fantastic to see how our sector is dealing with sustainability. On top of all that we learned that robotization has now really taken off. We cannot wait until 2024!" Looking to next year’s event, Interclean Amsterdam 2024 will take place May 14-17, 2024. RAI Amsterdam will once again be transformed into the global capital of cleaning and hygiene with four days of knowledge sharing, the opportunity to conduct business with leading manufacturers and opportunities to meet industry professionals from all over the world. In addition, Interclean China 2022 will be held in Hangzho from November 23-25, 2022. The event offers attendees the opportunity to discover the endless possibilities of the cleaning and hygiene industry in China. To learn more about Interclean events, visit www.intercleanshow.com.

The re-designed Hillbrush products, all featured in the company’s new catalog, include an Ergonomic Grippy Scrub which is an update of the existing Hillbrush scrubbing brush. The new-look brush has a much wider gap for the user’s hand and can be used in either direction making it much more versatile. The curved handle also means that pressure can be applied in multiple directions without compromising the grip, giving a far better cleaning result. Hillbrush has also added a new design Hand Scoop — which is showcased in the catalog for the first time — to its range of scoops. The streamlined design features a handle over the center of the scoop, creating a much more comfortable weight distribution as the center of gravity is now balanced to where the load will be its heaviest, reducing strain on the user’s wrist. Removing the rear extending handle to create a more compact design also allows greater maneuverability in smaller vats and containers to make scooping material much more efficient.

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS DUPONT FILAMENTS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS For more than 80 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.
HEALTH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - TOOTHBRUSH FILAMENTS The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, DuPont Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of DuPont™ Tynex®(nylon 612) and DuPont™ Herox®(nylon 610) . Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using DuPont filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, DuPont Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio BEAUTY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - FINE FILAMENTS DuPont™ Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from DuPont’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair. EFFICIENCY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – ABRASIVE FILAMENTS Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking for
ways to increase productivity. The emphasis is on getting more square feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extremes of the PH scale. The technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range that these filaments can be used in. Brushes made with these filaments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. DuPont™ Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need. CREATIVITY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – PAINTBRUSH FILAMENTS When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.
YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS
Recognition for being the global leader in filaments comes from our customers. You inspire us to make a difference in the world. We will continue to advance our innovations because we believe your BRUSH deserves the best FILAMENTS. 1-800-635-9695 | www.dupont.com

Hillbrush Invests in Three New Machines Hillbrush, the UK's largest manufacturer of brushes and specialist cleaning tools has made a £1.3 million investment in three new automated brush-making machines at its production site in Mere, Wiltshire. The investment secures Hillbrush’s manufacturing capability long into the future, with quicker outputs and reduced workloads for operators, as well as offering an even better quality finished product. Hillbrush has added a custom-built, first of its kind, Boucherie Aeola T from Belgium that will increase output for the majority of the company’s traditional yard brooms. Previously, broom manufacturing was undertaken by a separate manually fed machine. This has now been replaced by this one integrated, automated machine, making the operator’s workload easier and removing the inefficiency of transporting from one machine to another. In addition, Hillbrush has added the German-produced Zahoransky Z Lion machine which was designed and purchased with productivity and efficiencies in mind. The new kit is being used explicitly for manufacturing hygiene brushes, used in food and beverage production environments, freeing up Hillbrush’s smaller Boucherie machines which are being utilized for shorter product runs. The equipment trio is completed with another Zahoransky machine, the Z.Tiger. This machine has been purchased solely to manufacture vacuum cleaner brushes and will ensure continuity of supply, freeing up current machinery to manufacture other products as well. Charlie Coward, managing director of Hillbrush says, “In its centenary year, Hillbrush is committed to investing in the latest technology to not only provide our customers with the best quality products but to ensure that the Hillbrush business is fast and agile (and) ready to meet the challenges of the next generation.”
IHA Reviews 2022 Show, Works on Future Strategy After a review of International Houseware Association (IHA) activities over the last two years, results of The Inspired Home Show 2022 and feedback from the Show’s Exhibitor Trade Show Advisory Committee and three Retail Advisory Councils, the IHA Board of Directors unanimously agreed that rebuilding The Inspired Home Show back to pre-pandemic levels will be the primary focus of the Association. “We were one of the brands that sat out of The Inspired Home Show 2022,” says Rob Michelson, president and CCO, Bradshaw Home and an IHA Board member. “Although COVID concerns made our participation impossible this past year, we are very excited and enthusiastic to get back to the Show in 2023 and rebuild those face-to-face engagements that are critical to our success.” The meeting began with a thorough review of the 2022 Show, which ended with an approximate 50% turnout from exhibitors and buyers when compared to previous Shows. Although the total number of US buyers was down from previous years, the quality of key retailers in attendance remained very high. Having done a thorough analysis of the buying audience in attendance, IHA staff provided the Board with the following statistics, which further support the high quality of traffic seen at the Show: • 97.3% of 2022 Verified Retailers have Purchase Authority • 87.3% of 2022 Verified Retailers are Buyers and/or Executives • 25% of 2022 Verified Retailers represent more than $100MM in annual sales • More than 33% of Verified Retailers represent 50+ stores • More than 25% of Verified Retailers represent 100+ stores IHA’s Board then turned its attention to strategic planning and broke into three distinct groups focusing on in-depth discussions: • The Inspired Home Show 2023, focused on topics including exhibitor recruitment and retention, buyer recruitment and attention and international participation. • IHA Member Services, focused on identifying and developing appropriate activities and events that would increase the member value equation outside of the Show. • The Inspired Home Show 2024 & Beyond, focused on strategic partnership opportunities, location, Show length and day pattern. Feedback from each small group was then presented to the entire Board for further review and discussion. In order for IHA to be best positioned to meet the needs of the industry moving forward, appropriate direction was also provided to IHA staff so that IHA’s Strategic Plan can be further refined and developed over the coming months.

Discover Boucherie’s Newest Brush Machine Creation: NM
The End of Vertical Double Headers? Vertical brush machines were introduced 130 years ago. We believe it is time for something new! How about a machine having pretty much the same output as a doubleheader vertical machine, but with only three sets of clamps instead of six or even 12? With only one drill instead of three? Or with even only one filling tool instead of two? And wouldn’t you like the ability to continue to load the blocks in a horizontal clamp, as you are used to? How about being able to do that without having to reach dangerously in between filling tools and drills? Probably you wouldn’t mind such a machine using only half the floor space you are used to? And on top of that it, how about a machine with an energy efficiency which is unheard of? Not possible you think? Not any longer!
Introducing NM: Another Example of Boucherie’s Heart for Technology NM uses Boucherie’s most innovative technology, which combines a super high tufting speed with a continuously running filling tool that doesn’t stop between consecutive brushes. The machine is laid out as a compact horizontal

carrousel with only three clamping stations, and with extremely good accessibility for maintenance and changeover. Eliminating the start/stop cycles of the main motor, and equipped with the newest generation of electronics, NM saves energy and goes big with only a small footprint. With the NM, Boucherie has developed an extremely fast running single tool machine that is more compact, more energyefficient and much safer to run than the traditional vertical double headers. Fast Track ERP Implementation from Global Shop Solutions Global Shop Solutions, a leading provider of ERP software with more than 3,000 successful implementations around the globe, has launched a new Fast Track ERP Implementation to reduce the time it takes manufacturers to Go Live with ERP software and achieve a quicker return on investment. Developed after analysis of why some companies lose momentum during implementation, the Fast Track ERP Implementation process provides a blueprint based on best practices for helping manufacturers stay on course and go live faster. “The time it takes to go live with an ERP system can vary depending on the customer’s goals, time frame, available resources and other factors,” says Chris Pinaire, Director of Consulting & Implementation for Global Shop Solutions. “Our data shows implementations completed within three to four months generally produce the best results for customers that meet certain criteria. Based on that data, we developed the Fast Track ERP Implementation process to help new customers roll out the implementation process, stay on track and go live with Global Shop Solutions in 120 days or less.” This simplified process focuses on the fundamentals every new ERP user needs to know to get started. No customization, no advanced functionality — just the basic, core processes that facilitate a smooth transition from the company’s previous business management system to Global Shop Solutions. New customers that don’t meet the requirements and prefer to launch their ERP system with more capabilities can opt for Global Shop Solutions’ standard implementation process. These implementations require more preparation and often include advanced functionality and customizations, which can take additional time and resources for a successful go live. Fast Track ERP Implementation overcomes obstacles by focusing on the core functionality of the system and using a detailed training schedule to keep the implementation moving forward. Taking the manufacturer’s business requirements into account, the Global Shop Solutions implementation team strategically aligns the training schedule to coincide with specific goals and milestones that need to be met during implementation.

supply CHAIN
Supply Chain Collaboration and VMI to Get Ahead of Economic Challenges By Lisa Anderson With record-breaking price increases and lack of material availability, manufacturers are experiencing increasing threats to profit margins and maintaining strong customer service. To add fuel to the fire, they are also now having to consider plans to prepare for a potential recession. It is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate these volatile times, and the most successful are not doing it alone. Instead, they are pursuing collaborative programs with supply chain partners. What is clear is that there will be more winners and losers created than at any other time in history. Thus, it is worth figuring out how to work with your supply chain partners to ensure mutual success rather than mutual demise. First, it makes sense to evaluate your supply chain partners – both customers and suppliers. Most executives are reshoring, nearshoring and reallocating capacity in their supply chain, which means the supply chain will continue to evolve. However, as the pandemic has proven, companies are only as strong as our weakest link, so firms must be vigilant in selecting supply chain partners and make a change if needed. Companies shouldn’t simply assume that current partners are prepared for what’s ahead. Navigating both inflation and deflation is not for the faint of heart. Only the most action-oriented, innovative and collaborative will thrive. Companies should take the time now to assess their specific situation and be deliberate in making choices. Once strong partners are in place, attention should be directed to how to work together to achieve dramatic results. One successful approach is to roll out a collaborative ordering process, also known as vendor-managed inventory (VMI). For example, when working with an aerospace and defense company that supplied controls for the cockpit, we partnered with our client to implement and upgrade VMI. We partnered with our client’s customers (such as Boeing) to determine what to send to their locations for them. We were able to improve service to Boeing and maintain high OTIF (on-timein-full) levels while eliminating their cost of ordering and achieving their inventory level targets. From the manufacturer’s perspective, they were able to expand business by achieving the top supplier status. Additionally, they were able to improve
14 | www.brushwaremag.com
margins and working capital by better managing inventory and costs with visibility into their supply chain. In another example, a specialized distributor of bearings used VMI to manage their customer’s inventory for them. Their customer was a steel manufacturer, and so although bearings were not significant in price as compared with the rest of their raw materials, they were critical in keeping the steel mill running. Thus, this value-added service became the key reason the steel manufacturer considered the bearing supplier as strategic and vital through both inflationary and deflationary times. From the supplier point-of-view, an outdoor lighting manufacturer used a vendor-managed inventory program with its suppliers. Instead of hiring planners to determine how many components to keep on hand with limited space, they asked their supplier to manage it for them. The manufacturer always had the appropriate stock to supply the line, and they never ran out. Their suppliers became integral links in the supply chain and part of a collaborative S&OP process (Sales & Operations Planning, also known as SIOP for Sales, Inventory, Operations planning), resulting in mutual business growth and success. As manufacturers focus on collaborative supply chain partnerships and programs such as VMI, they are creating unique value in their supply chain. To thrive during inflation and deflationary times, it is important to be ready to pivot quickly with changing conditions. Additionally, by partnering with their end-to-end supply chain, these manufacturers create sustainable, profitable growth for mutual success. Lisa Anderson is the founder and president of LMA Consulting Group Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in manufacturing strategy and end-to-end supply chain transformation that maximizes the customer experience and enables profitable, scalable, dramatic business growth. Protecting Profits As Costs Rise
By Phillip M. Perry
Inflation is rising faster than any time in recent memory. Businesses must deal with rapid cost increases by managing cash flow efficiently and communicating effectively with customers and suppliers. The benefits of inventory reduction must be balanced against the need to maintain critical stock for top customers.

Inflation has taken root. Businesses everywhere are dealing with annualized cost increases of nearly 7 percent — the fastest pace in 40 years and significantly higher than the 1.8 percent average of the past decade. The resulting upticks in operating costs can cause serious damage to the bottom line. “We’re in a very unfortunate situation now,” says Bill Conerly, Principal of his own consulting firm in Lake Oswego, Oregon (www.conerlyconsulting.com). “Businesses that have always devoted their efforts to serving customers and being productive must also start worrying about covering their costs in the most effective way. That means they need to shift some of their focus to coping with inflation.” The challenge is all the greater for its unfamiliarity: It’s been 30 years since inflation was much of a player in company planning. Experts don’t see relief any time soon. They point to a number of root causes, one of which is energy. “With the cost of oil baked into so many things, it seems we are going to see more significant inflation in the months ahead,” says John McQuaig, managing partner of McQuaig & Welk, the Wenatchee, Wash., based management consulting firm (www. mcqw.com). He points to a continuing global disruption in the delivery of goods and services as yet another cause. “Supply chain issues tend to create opportunities to raise prices because

of the effect of supply and demand. When the former is crunched, prices go up by the nature of the market.” And there’s yet a third driver of higher costs: a wage spiral resulting from the pandemic’s softening effect on the labor supply.
Forecasting Cash Flow Of all the steps businesses can take to mitigate the bottomline effects of inflation, the most important is better management of cash flow. Inflation tends to accelerate the drain of money from company coffers, and throttle the flow that comes in. If left unaddressed, these battling trends can gut profits and threaten business survival. Experts advise looking at the coming months with an eye toward estimating what will happen to cash balances. “Proactively managing cash flow is critical right now,” says Lisa Anderson, president of LMA Consulting Group, Claremont, Calif. (www.lma-consultinggroup.com). This can be done by running periodic forecasts. “What I would recommend is looking at your demand side and asking, ‘What are we really going to need here?’ And then looking at your supply side and asking, ‘What will I have to make?’ And then determining what the answers mean for cash flow. If it’s going to be negative, you better borrow some money.” Such analysis, of course, involves estimates of future revenues — a practice tainted by uncertainty. “Having a sales forecast is great, but that doesn’t mean you will collect all the money you think you will,” says Scott Beaver, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Oracle NetSuite. “And even if your sales forecast is a hundred percent accurate, will the expected timeframe be met?”
Faster Receipts Historic data, of course, may provide a less than reliable foundation for future forecasts. Whatever the estimates for what lies ahead, businesses can obviate cash squeezes by accelerating accounts receivable and stretching accounts payable. For the former, experts advise running regular aging reports. How much do customers owe in increments of two weeks, 30 days and 60 Days? Any growth in the numbers over time might indicate a steady deterioration of cash flow.
“Having a sales forecast is great, but that doesn’t mean you will collect all the money you think you will,” says Scott Beaver, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Oracle NetSuite. “And even if your sales forecast is a hundred percent accurate, will the expected timeframe be met?”
What determines cash on hand is not sales but collections, and history shows that during inflationary times customers start paying slower as a result of their own cash squeezes. Planning must reflect the reality of cash flow uncertainty. “Growing accounts receivable can put serious strain on smaller businesses that may not have the cash reserves to absorb delays in receipts,” says Beaver. “For most companies, cash flow forecasts are less than 75 percent accurate.” One approach to anticipating likely variables is to look at historical performance. What percentage of receivables is usually collected during slower seasons? That figure can be applied to open receivables to help estimate the likely pace of receipts.
Keeping in close touch with customers can also help accelerate receipts by providing opportunities to request timely payments and helping spot nascent issues that may grow into future roadblocks. “Maintain a good handle on what customers are doing,” says Anderson. “What are their future sales activities? Are they encountering problems that may affect operations?”
Not all customers are of equal importance, and it’s smart to concentrate efforts on the most profitable. Account reviews can identify which customers should receive the most attention. “So much of the important information required to monitor cash flow is tied to a selling cycle which varies by customer,” says Frank Cespedes, Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School. “Some buyers say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ when you make a call; others require multiple iterations of proposals. Some buy what you have in inventory; others require customized items. Those things affect the time to receive cash and the cost to fulfill orders. Good account reviews unearth that information.” Companies might also explore requiring bigger deposits from customers, says McQuaig. Sweeten the increase by emphasizing customer benefits. Maybe you already have some needed

materials or product in inventory, that the customer can actually come and see. Or offer free early delivery. Emphasize that earlier payment helps the customer avoid higher prices later. As for the outward flow of cash, a tried-and-true tactic is delaying the payment of monies owed. “Good financial management on the buy side has always stretched out payables,” says Cespedes. “This is particularly so in an inflationary environment where businesses must pay a lot more attention to the payment cycle.”
INFLATION QUIZ
HOW WELL ARE YOU BATTLING INFLATION? Are you taking the right steps to mitigate the costly effects of inflation? Find out by taking this quiz. Score 10 points for each “yes” answer. Then total your score and check your rating at the bottom of the chart. Have you instituted the following practices? 1. Running periodic cash flow forecasts
Stretching payables can, of course, backfire. For starters, it can mean the loss of the five percent or 10 percent discounts many companies offer customers that pay before their due dates. It can also result in higher prices for goods and services. “Extending too far makes you more of a risk,” says Beaver. “And suppliers tend to give better prices to customers that are less risky.”
2. Maintaining accounts receivable aging reports
And there’s also the dependability of deliveries to consider: Ongoing supply chain disruptions will cause vendors to favor deliveries to customers that pay on time or early. The cost of not having essential materials can be greater than the interest cost required to borrow money to bridge cash gaps.
8. Ensuring the compliance of any loan covenants
Mitigating Costs In an inflationary environment, suppliers of goods and services tend to raise their prices. And higher rates of inflation tend to make the increases bigger. “When inflation is two percent everything tends to increase by that amount, plus or minus a little bit,” says Conerly. “But at seven percent inflation, say, prices tend to increase by that amount plus or minus a lot.” Businesses should try to get readings on anticipated future increases and shortages. This can be done by maintaining close contact with vendors. “Work closely with suppliers and develop good relationships with them,” says McQuaig. “What do they see ahead in terms of product availability and price?” There’s another advantage to close contact, notes McQuaig. The suppliers may give you a little more favorable treatment. For example, you might leverage any significant volume you’re doing by asking the vendor to hold inventory you would normally keep in stock. You can also ask if a price commitment now will remain firm for the duration of the season. Another cost-saving move is to pursue less expensive alternatives to pricier goods and services. “Domestic inflation has been higher than in most of the world,” says Conerly. “Some businesses are shifting sourcing to other countries.” Finally, dig deeper into the reasons for suppliers’ price hikes.
3. Accelerating account collections 4. Stretching accounts payable, if appropriate 5. Keeping in close touch with customers 6. Identified the most valuable customers 7. Increasing productive communications with suppliers 9. Trimming inventory while bolstering critical items 10. Raising prices judiciously What’s your score? 80 or more: Congratulations. You have gone a long way toward protecting your business from costly inflation. Between 60 and 80: It’s time to fine-tune your financial management. Below 60: Your business is at risk. Take action on the suggestions in the accompanying story.
“Are goods and delivery cost increases in line with inflation?” poses Beaver. “Or are suppliers trying to pad their own margins a little bit, just because they see inflation as an opportunity? That sometimes happens.”
Trimming Inventory Before inflation appeared on the horizon, businesses responded to supply chain disruptions by purchasing and holding whatever they could get their hands on. Any step to avoid running out of product seemed like a good thing. Times have changed. Now too many warehouse goods can tie up cash at a time when company treasuries need more liquidity. “Businesses need to be thinking about how to manage their inventory better,” said Anderson. “They need to make the right decisions on what, when, how and where to buy it, as well as where to store it. And they need to manage their supply chain network to maintain strategic inventory stockpiles.” Also relegated to history is the unmodulated “just in time” (JIT) delivery paradigm seen as a strategic hallmark after the great recession of 2008. While JIT helped companies maintain good cash flow by trimming inventory investment, the supply www.brushwaremag.com | 19

chain debacle highlighted the importance of moderation. “Businesses have to ask whether it’s better to have too much inventory or to run your customers out,” says Anderson. Given that neither situation is ideal, Anderson advises maintaining sufficient inventory stockpiles to support key customers while maintaining JIT stock for others. Beefing up stock of critical items can be a smart move even in these inventory-cutting times, says McQuaig. Given the continuing supply chain issues, stocking out of a needed item can result in the loss of important customers. “In construction, for example, even getting the right size water heater can be very difficult right now,” he says. “A lot of plumbers are having to stock units ahead of time, so they have them available.” The decision on overstocking key items must be made on a case-by-case basis. “Generally speaking, it’s a good idea,” says McQuaig. “The danger is the possibility of running out of cash if you do not have enough working capital.” McQuaig gives the example of a company installing irrigation systems. “If they know pipe is going to go up in price because oil is a big component, and they see supply might get pinched, they might stock all the pipe they need for a year. But they won’t get back the money tied up in pipe until they receive it from their customer. They might end up in a situation in which they can’t meet their payroll.” Companies can obviate such difficulties by running monthly or weekly cash flow forecasts.
20 | www.brushwaremag.com
Raising Prices Asking more for goods and services is another way to adjust cash inflows. “Businesses are very hesitant to raise prices when they don’t have to,” says Conerly. “And they often get push back from their salespeople. But the fact is, buyers are accustomed to seeing price increases in inflationary times.” The amount of increase can be based on the components of production, noted McQuaig. “If you are a builder of custom homes, do you have an inflation index in there in case your costs go up? Prices for lumber and other significant items have been varying all over the map. If the time frame is a year to build a house, how did you price it at the front end to make sure that you were covered for inflation on the back end?” Price changes must be carefully communicated. “Give the white-glove treatment to tier one customers by reaching out and explaining how your costs are rising,” says Beaver. “Communicate to them that the price rise is only temporary.” One approach is to tell your most important customers that you are absorbing 20 percent of the price increases and passing along the other 80 percent. Another is to separate out any fuel charge increases from the delivery costs and explain you are only passing them along. “A company will have more leverage to raise prices if it has offered great service and maintained inventory.”
Above all, avoid delay. “Businesses are most successful at raising prices when they do so quickly,” says Anderson. “Customers are more willing to absorb increases during inflationary times when they can see it makes sense in the marketplace.” Waiting too long risks losing the opportunity, especially if inflation leads to a serious economic downturn. “No one wants to absorb a price increase during a recession.”
New Rules Today’s unexpected return of inflation has changed the operating paradigm for businesses large and small. The Great Recession of 2008 had sparked the habit of relying too much on just-in-time delivery of supplies to trim cash investments. Further, the recent willingness of customers to accept price increases was exacerbated by supply chain disruptions. Now businesses must modify their cash flow management, inventory practices and pricing policies to reflect both rising costs and supply chain disruptions. “The booming economy of recent times has allowed companies to pay less attention to market developments and still be fine,” says Anderson. “But now in a time of inflationary price increases, they have to do better. The job of managing is tougher than ever before.”
DEALING WITH BANKS
By carefully managing cash flow, businesses can alleviate the profit erosion caused by inflation. In the accompanying article, experts describe how accelerating receivables, delaying payables, raising prices and fine-tuning inventory can help preserve the bottom line. Left unattended, a decline in profits can result in a dangerous financial condition: a breach of the terms required by loan agreements. “Banks look at covenant violations closely, so borrowers need to ensure that any squeeze in the relevant ratios — such as income to debt — will not create problems,” says John McQuaig, managing partner of McQuaig & Welk, the Wenatchee, Wash., based management consulting firm (www.mcqw.com). “Sometimes there is no quick fix for resolving them.” It’s smart to be proactive. “If you know you’re going to have a covenant violation, you’re better off informing the bank and explaining to them how you’re going to work your way out of it,” says McQuaig. “On occasion, they might change a ratio on a line of credit if you’ve been in good performance and they can see this is not going to remain a problem.” McQuaig gives an example: Suppose a company experiences an increase in interest rates because of inflation. As a result, they break even in a year in which they would normally make a profit. The company could inform the bank that their inflation-savvy customers are now willing to accept price increases. As a result, the business can increase its pricing over the coming year to resolve the covenant violation.

US Manufacturing Pushes Up In May
Chinese Lockdowns Have Impacted Manufacturing for Several Regions The May PMI for US Manufacturers was reported at 56.1 percent in the latest ISM® Report On Business®. The figure was up from the April reading of 55.4 percent and ended a three-month downward trend. The figure also indicates a 24th straight month of expansion for the overall US economy after the contraction in 2020 sparked by the pandemic.
period, with a combined minus 0.7-percentage point change to the Manufacturing PMI® calculation. The Employment Index contracted after expanding for eight straight months, but panelists indicated improvement in the ability to hire in May compared to April. Challenges with turnover (quits and retirements) and resulting backfilling continue to plague efforts to adequately staff organizations, but to a slightly lesser extent compared to April. Inputs — expressed as supplier deliveries, inventories and imports — continued to constrain production expansion. The Supplier Deliveries Index indicated deliveries slowed at a slower rate, which was supported by the Inventories Index increase in May. The Imports Index contracted in May after six consecutive months of expansion, reflecting the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns in China. The Prices Index increased for the 24th consecutive month, at a slower rate compared to April.
“The US manufacturing sector remains in a demand-driven, supply chain-constrained environment,” says Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “Despite the Employment Index contracting in May, companies improved their progress on addressing moderate-term labor shortages at all tiers of the supply chain, according to Business Survey Committee respondents’ comments. Panelists reported slightly lower rates of quits compared to April. May was a second straight month of slight easing of prices expansion, but instability in global energy markets continues.” The report says panelists continue to note supply chain and pricing issues as their biggest concerns. Demand expanded, with the (1) New Orders Index improving, supported by stronger growth of new export orders, (2) Customers’ Inventories Index remaining at a very low level and (3) Backlog of Orders Index increasing. Consumption (measured by the Production and Employment indexes) was mixed during the
“Manufacturing performed well for the 24th straight month, with demand registering faster month-over-month growth and consumption softening due to labor force constraints,” says Fiore. “Overseas partners’ disruptions are beginning to impact US manufacturing, creating a near-term headwind for factory output growth. Ten percent of panelists’ general comments expressed difficulty obtaining material from their Asian partners, which will impact reliable deliveries in the summer months.”

economic DASHBOARD GLOBAL MANUFACTURING GERMANY: S&P Global/BME reported a May PMI of 54.8 percent for German manufacturers. The new reading was up slightly from April’s mark of 54.6 percent and ended a three-month slide. Despite the improvement, the figure is below last year’s reading for the same month as demand is weakening due to inflation. Additionally, COVID-19 restrictions in China have impacted new orders. Employment has moved up and there are some reports of material availability improvement. EUROZONE: S&P Global reported a 54.6 percent PMI for Eurozone manufacturers representing a fourth straight month of decline for the index and down from April’s PMI of 55.5 percent. That is well below the May 2021 figure of 63.1 percent and business confidence for the region reached a two-year low. Headwinds include rising prices, weakening demand and continuing supply chain issues, though some bright spots have been reported in that area. UNITED KINGDOM: The S&P Global/CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI for May was reported as 54.6 percent, down from 55.8 percent in April. The key issues pushing the figure down included weaker domestic demand, supply chain challenges, Chinese lockdowns, exchange rate issues and the impact of the war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions. Business confidence reached a 17-month low. INDIA: S&P Global reported a May PMI of 54.6 percent for Indian manufacturers, which was just under the April reading of 54.7 percent. In fact, Indian manufacturing has remained in a relatively tight range of 54.0 to 55.5 percent since December of 2021. Output and new orders were steady, but new export orders showed strong improvement in May. Input costs rose and supplier delivery times extended. Employment improved but business confidence was near a two-year low. ITALY: S&P Global reported a 2.5 percent drop for the Italian Manufacturing PMI with a figure of 51.9 percent for May versus 54.5 percent in April. Lower levels of output and new orders were cited as the key reasons for the one-month dropoff, which represented a fourth straight month of decline for the country’s PMI reading. Employment did move up and business confidence improved based on an expectation of improvements in the supply chain. CHINA: The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI was reported at 49.1 percent for May to jump up 3.1 percent from April’s 26-month low of 46.0 percent. Manufacturers have struggled to cope with China’s strict COVID-19 restrictions, which has resulted in rising backlogs of work. Companies cut purchases and reduced stock. Business outlook was pessimistic and reached a five-month low.

ISM® REPORT COMMENTS (US Manufacturers) “Our order books are still strong. Material prices continue to rise, with energy and freight noted as the underlying influences on increased costs.” Machinery “Supply chain issues are causing us to dramatically extend our lead times. Our production lines have (run) low on or out of parts needed to complete rates every week this month.” Miscellaneous Manufacturing “Price increases haven’t let up. I thought 2022 was going to be better, but it hasn’t been. Shortages (among other issues) are still disrupting the supply chain.” Plastics and Rubber Products “While orders remain strong and backlogs exist, there’s a softening in forecasted orders for leading indicator-type customers and business units.” Chemical Products “Shanghai has been shut down since mid-March. All of the (population) is in lockdown, with no production or port activities. Steel remains in allocation. Electronics lead times are more than 12 months.” Fabricated Metal Products “Input costs, particularly grain, oil, dairy and protein, are rising faster than can be passed along at retail and food service, with no relief in sight.” Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products “Suppliers are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel for restoration of (semiconductor) component supply. Second-quarter and Q3 supply appears to be loosening.” Computer and Electronic Products “The challenge with semiconductors hasn’t softened; the situation is worsening due to Chinese COVID-19 lockdowns.” Transportation Equipment Credit: Institute for Supply Management®, ISM®, PMI®, Report On Business®.
