Happy Summer to all of our loyal Brushware readers! I am pleased to introduce the 2023 Annual Brushware Industry Buyers’ Guide and Supplier/Manufacturer Index. It’s pretty well-known that this is my favorite issue as I enjoy seeing the scale of brush industry products, services, materials and machine capabilities each year.
Brushware – a bi-monthly publication edited for key personnel in the brush, roller, broom, mop and applicator industry. Published continuously through the years, the one publication that is the spokesman for the brush and allied industries: 1898-1923, called Brooms, Brushes & Handles; 1924-1947, called Brooms, Brushes & Mops, 1948-today, called Brushware

Looking at the overall July/August edition article line-up, Phillip M. Perry’s "Winning the War for Workers" feature is a thought-provoking read as I do think we are in a fascinating period for labor overall. From where I sit as a media business covering the manufacturing industry, it's interesting to see how labor issues are now hitting the information sector — driven by changing perspectives related to the pandemic. Based on my experiences, the primary drag on productivity in the sector is related to a diminishing level of relevant skills and frankly a lack of interest in challenging work. That sounds vaguely similar to what I hear from the manufacturing sector as well. Ironically, the long-term answer points to automation and AI in both segments.
But for the present, Perry’s in-depth article should serve as a useful guide on how to get ahead in the labor market, which pretty much translates to getting ahead in business. No matter what, it certainly points to a major shift in how companies should approach recruiting and hiring.
From a more historical perspective, I enjoyed seeing our veteran correspondent Bob Lawrence in the answer seat for our 125th Anniversary Interview Series. I’ve learned a little something new from each one of these pieces and in this case, I really enjoyed the passion that Bob projects for Brushware in his responses. Working on something you truly believe in is a pretty good step toward a happy and full life.
That passion and the interview series overall have underscored for me that we are only caretakers for the magazine. It is an honor to work on each edition and the associated digital properties with the goal of being a vital resource to all individuals and companies in the brushware industry. So, thank you to the readers for your loyalty and feedback. Thank you to the advertisers for making Brushware possible, and thank you to our correspondents and our product and editorial staff for putting in the work.

Manufacturing and Supply Chain Expert Lisa Anderson has published a Special Report — The Road Ahead: Business, Supply Chain & The World Order. Anderson is president of LMA Consulting Group and works with manufacturers and distributors on strategy and end-to-end supply chain transformation to maximize the customer experience and enable profitable, scalable, dramatic business growth.
“While the visible signs of supply chain chaos have dissipated, business volatility and disruptions remain high. With the world order in a state of flux, risk is high. Yet because everything is interconnected, companies have an opportunity to stay ahead of their ideal customers’ needs. They can do this by reconfiguring their supply chains, leveraging technology and attracting and continually developing talent to leapfrog their competitors to secure a leadership position in their marketplace,” says Anderson.
The Road Ahead: Business, Supply Chain & The World Order is a special report that captures comments from trusted advisors and experts from various disciplines about what their most successful clients are doing and what companies should do to take advantage of opportunities in 2023 and beyond. “In talking with my colleagues, it became apparent that the same challenges, issues and opportunities resonate among business disciplines. Each discipline requires attention. Making required changes is not for the faint of heart. The opportunity in front of companies today is the greatest since the Great Depression,” she says.
The report includes insights from 27 trusted advisors and covers a wide variety of key topics impacting manufacturers, distributors, retail and healthcare. From cybersecurity, logistics, insurance and talent acquisition, to nearshoring, reshoring and friendshoring, the tasks are many, but the opportunity is significant.

For more than 80 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.
The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, DuPont Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of DuPont™ Tynex®(nylon 612) and DuPont™ Herox®(nylon 610) . Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using DuPont filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, DuPont Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio
DuPont™ Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from DuPont’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair.
Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking for
ways to increase productivity. The emphasis is on getting more square feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extremes of the PH scale. The technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range that these filaments can be used in. Brushes made with these filaments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. DuPont™ Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need.
When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.
Zahn Unique Brushes recently won two product awards at the Creative Impulse Awards 2023 announced at Creativeworld 2023 held in Frankfurt, Germany. Creativeworld ran February 4-7 and is the world’s most prestigious trade fair for the international hobby, craft and artist supply sector, described as “an inspiring treasure chest for the creative community.”
Zahn received second prize for this series of brushes in the Creative Impulse Award. The master class CASIN vegan watercolor brush series is the result of decades of development experience. The aim was to surpass the properties of highquality natural hair brushes with vegan synthetic hair. The art lies in the individual coordination of different geometries, diameters, tapers and lengths of the synthetic hair as well as a specially developed manufacturing process. The master class CASIN vegan watercolor brushes are characterized by a high liquid absorption capacity and previously unattainable dimensional stability.
More information on this brush series is available at: www.zahn-pinsel.com/aktuelles/news/ casin-vegan-aquarellmalpinselserie
Zahn’s Triangular Liner brush series won third prize in the Tool of the Year category at the Creative Impulse Awards 2023. The triangular liner enables fast work with the highest precision. The special triangular shape is ideal for achieving clean painting results in hard-to-reach corners. Precise, straight lines, corners and details are achieved in no time at all. For thicker colors, Zahn recommends the two-stage bicolor fiber. This is very robust and adapts perfectly to all surfaces. A solution for more fluid colors is the soft Falbex fiber, which adapts well to all surfaces and leaves no grooves.

The Inspired Home Show, set to be held next March in Chicago, will undergo several changes in 2024. Based on feedback from two industry-wide surveys and four special committees made up of both exhibitors and retailers, the IHA Board of Directors has decided to reduce the overall length and optimize the layout to create the most vibrant, productive and efficient trade show experience possible.
The Show will now open on Sunday, March 17, and close on Tuesday, March 19. According to Derek Miller, IHA president & CEO, the majority of exhibitors and retailers indicated on recent surveys and in discussions that three full days at the Show is sufficient with business being more concentrated over that timeframe.
“Making the move from four days to three full days will not only make the Show more productive and dynamic but will also reduce costs for both the exhibitor and retail audiences, something frequently cited throughout discussions,” Miller explained.
“I’m excited about the changes; it’s great for the industry,” Steve Greenspon, CEO, Honey-Can-Do International and IHA chairman told IHA’s HomePage News. “A three-day Show will help both retailers and exhibitors better control their expenses while getting a more fulfilling Show experience. Condensing the Show will make it much more efficient to see all the exhibits and displays.”
Changes to the Show layout include:
• The Wired + Well Expo will move from the Lakeside Center to the North Hall co-locating with the Clean + Contain Expo to create an active and dynamic destination at the Show.
• The North Hall will be divided into two halves with Wired + Well occupying the right-hand side and Clean + Contain continuing to occupy the left-hand side.
• The Discover Design Expo will be disbursed with current exhibitors being placed within their appropriate categories.
• The Travel Gear + Luggage category will move into the South Hall to give this new, exciting area room to grow and develop.
• The International Sourcing Expo will return to the Lower North Hall, a location previously occupied by that group of exhibitors in 2019. Exhibitors without branded products and U.S. distribution will be grouped in this area together to create product-sourcing opportunities for the industry.
• While the overall size of the Show will not decrease, with these re-location plans the Show will no longer occupy the Lakeside Center. Exhibits and displays located in the Lakeside Center Lobby, such as the Smart Home Pavilion and the Inventors Corner, will be relocated later in the year into the North and South Halls.
The Inspired Home Show 2024 will take place March 17-19 at McCormick Place in Chicago. Registration is currently open at https://app.theinspiredhomeshow.com/registration/.
Success in the highly-competitive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software market requires continual development of new tools and technology advancements that simplify manufacturing. Global Shop Solutions, a leader in ERP software for manufacturers around the globe, is proud to announce the promotion of Trent Maynard to Director of Product & Engineering.
“Our primary focus at Global Shop Solutions has always been to simplify manufacturing for our customers,” says Dusty Alexander, President & CEO. “From Trent’s first day with us, he demonstrated a relentless attitude for finding new product advancements and technology to make our customers’ lives easier. That’s exactly the kind of person I want leading our product into the future.”
Maynard began his career in the manufacturing industry working for a company that was a customer of Global Shop Solutions ERP software. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a position at Global Shop Solutions providing software implementation and training for new and existing customers. He then transitioned to the position of operations and technical consultant and business analyst, where he designed and created tailored solutions for existing and potential customer challenges. Prior to this promotion, Maynard served as an R&D Manager and created some of Global Shop Solutions’ most impactful product advancements in terms of meeting customer needs and positioning the company for new growth.
“My focus has been three-fold,” says Maynard. “Number one: hired and retained a team with some of our smartest people to position our ERP product as a technical leader in the industry. Number two: organized our base code to make our product run tighter, faster and more efficiently, while also enabling customers to implement customizations without having to change the underlying code. Number three: simplified the process for customers to upgrade to new versions.”
As Director of Product & Engineering, Maynard wants to make sure Global Shop Solutions creates an ERP product their customers love to use because it helps them do their jobs more effectively and efficiently. He also wants to attract new customers by offering a better product than they’re currently using.
“Ultimately, it’s all about making sure our product ticks all the boxes for our customers,” says Maynard. “Often they don’t know what is possible, so we have to listen and understand what they’re trying to accomplish and then figure out how the software can solve their pain points. We also want to build a product that appeals to our employees, that our engineers can enjoy working on and be proud of and that attracts top talent to Global Shop Solutions.”
One popular strength of ERP software is the ability to integrate with outside software and technologies. Maynard’s responsibilities will include implementing artificial intelligence (AI) testing tools and best practices and modernizing Global Shop Solutions’ software interfaces and tech stack.
“How we build our tech stack has significant implications for what happens downstream with our customers, and I can’t think of a better person to lead the way than Trent,” says Alexander.
Mike Melzer, VP of Operations & Service at Global Shop Solutions, agrees. “It’s rare to find someone so talented in the technical field who also has extensive shop experience. The one thing we’ve been outstanding about doing as a company is listening when our customers give us ideas on where we can get better. Trent is open to listening and then guiding the ship where we need to go. I trust his knowledge and experience, and his background gives us a huge advantage in our marketplace as our company continues to move forward.”
The National Association of Manufacturers has announced Brandon Farris as its new vice president of energy and resources policy.
“Brandon joins the NAM at a pivotal time in our country and for our industry,” says NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons. “Manufacturers across the United States face regulatory challenges that affect their ability to do what they do best: transform and deploy modern technologies to protect the environment, while creating jobs and strengthening the economy. Commonsense regulatory and permitting reform, along with energy security, are needed now more than ever. Brandon’s experience and expertise will help manufacturers accomplish these critical goals.”
Before joining the NAM, Farris was the head of federal government relations for The Chemours Company, where he played an integral role in securing passage of the AIM Act, designed to phase out refrigerants that contribute to climate change. He worked closely with the NAM to help secure bipartisan ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol during the 117th Congress. Along with these and other major legislative accomplishments, he was honored as a 2022 top lobbyist by the National Institute for Lobbying & Ethics.
Previously, Farris served as assistant general counsel for Arkema as well as senior counsel for government relations for the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation. After serving in the Marine Corps Reserve, he began his career in Washington as a Bryce Harlow Foundation Fellow at the George Washington University School of Law while working on the US House Agriculture Committee.

When independent accounting contractor JoAnn Agee closed the year-end books for Global Shop Solutions in 2007, she had no intention of going to work full-time for the global provider of ERP software for manufacturers. A few months later the company’s Chief Financial Officer invited her to do just that. This year Agee celebrated her 15th year as the company’s controller, adding another member to Global Shop Solutions’ growing cadre of employees who have achieved this milestone. “A skilled financial professional, Agee has a unique combination of accounting and people skills,” says Dusty Alexander, President and CEO of Global Shop Solutions. “Since day one, JoAnn has worked tirelessly to improve internal accounting processes to benefit the company, our employees, and our customers. Fifteen years later, and she is still pushing us to simplify our accounting processes, improve our accounting acumen and encourage a team of accounting professionals to be their best.”
Before joining Global Shop Solutions, Agee worked in a wide array of accounting capacities from accounting clerk to vice president of finance. As the company’s controller, she initially performed all financial functions including payroll, accounts receivable and payable, maintaining the general ledger and producing the monthly financials and year-end audits. Over time, Global Shop Solutions’ rapid growth tripled the size of the finance department requiring Agee to relinquish most day-to-day tasks and assume a leadership role, which includes finding ways to make accounting processes quicker and more
efficient, hiring new accounting personnel, ensuring her department can accommodate unique customer needs and creating an environment where her team works together as a cohesive unit.
“Global Shop Solutions is such a special company and culture. It seems hard to believe I’ve been here 15 years,” says Agee. “I love my job, the people I work with and the family environment. We keep growing and growing and the company remains a very close-knit organization. I can’t imagine working anywhere else but here. Global Shop Solutions is home for me.”

When did you start with Brushware and how did you get connected with the magazine?
I started writing for Brushware 38 years ago in 1985 after answering an ad in Editorial and Publishing Magazine seeking a writer placed by publisher Carl Wurzer, who along with his wife Andra, had taken the magazine from printing’s archaic age to the next level, meaning his quality throughout. Carl gave me carte blanche as far as deciding what to cover other than ABMA conventions and trade shows. Given a list of our subscribers, I traveled the nation to see and write about their companies whether they advertised or not. I particularly liked being at their facilities, meeting the personnel, taking photos and writing about the origin of the companies and their evolvement both in product and operation. In 1987, Brushware was one of the sponsors of my return to Vietnam when the communist nation allowed American journalists in for the first time after the war ended 12 years earlier. In Vietnam, I visited brush companies and wrote articles for Brushware. I did the same in Thailand, communist China and Hong Kong, ten years before the British returned the nation to China after 156 years of colonial rule.
As part of our 125th-anniversary celebration, Brushware is offering an article related to the history of the magazine in each edition for 2023. For our fourth installment in the series, we have the following interview with long-time Brushware correspondent, Bob Lawrence.
After a broadcasting career, first as a DJ on radio followed by managing two radio stations in South Georgia, I was drafted into the Army. After which I anchored radio and TV newscasts in Seoul, Korea and Saigon, South Vietnam. Following a career in civilian TV news, I taught journalism, mass communications, public relations, etc. at the college and university level. Later, I freelanced for a local newspaper, a statewide newspaper and several business magazines.
In the aftermath of that, I established a public relations firm specializing in economic development in the tri-state region of South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa. Throughout, I continued as a contributor for Brushware. When Carl and Andra retired, I was retained by the new owners, Norman Finegold and Karen Grinter, who took the magazine into the digital age in all publishing aspects. I was pleased they continued to maintain the high-quality printing and paper standards the Wurzers set. Now, under the ownership of Dylan Goodwin that quality continues as he takes Brushware to the next level and adds some new and interesting features.
From a day-to-day perspective, what is your favorite part of working for Brushware?
Friendships I’ve developed with the magazine’s owners and the suppliers and manufacturers in the brush, broom and mop industry are my favorite part. What’s amazed me in my nearly 40 years of writing for Brushware is the camaraderie existing among competing companies when gathering at ABMA conventions and other meetings. While finding that astonishing, I was also blown away while visiting a Wisconsin company one day to find it had been helped out by a nearby competitor in manufacturing and supplying products to its customers while recovering from a factory fire. The same was the case when a competitor’s facility was flooded in Florida. I’m just guessing, but I’ll bet there are many examples of that kindness in this industry. I’ve never heard of anything like it in my coverage of other industries.
I am currently finishing my non-fiction epic Good Night Vietnam, Rebel With A Cause to be published this fall. Unlike 1987’s Good Morning Vietnam, mine isn’t a comedy, but Robin Williams’ character, Adrian Cronauer and I were both broadcasters at the American Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN), in Saigon. While he was a DJ during the early part of the war, I was in radio/TV news and enduring near-death experiences on and off the battlefield at the height of the conflict. My other novels include: Daydreamer: The Amazing Adventures of Raymond Semple and Ominous, Conspiracy To Use Artificial Intelligence To Rule The World (A Raymond Semple Novel).
Do you have a top highlight or favorite story of working with Brushware?
Wow! There have been so many highlights, but my absolute favorite was interviewing and writing an article about Rudy Deligdish. In 1938 his family fled Austria, their homeland, where he had worked in his father’s business processing and supplying horse hair and bristles to the brush industry. On March 12, while the Nazis marched into Vienna, his hometown, the Deligdish family was escaping to Brussels with hopes of going to America. Rudy was 16 years old. They faced numerous obstacles, including the family being split up before arriving in America. After finally reuniting and resuming their animal hair business in New York, Rudy later established Deligh Industries supplying wire to the brush and other industries. Rudy’s son, Robert, presides over the company today. This is just a capsule of a most amazing story of an
immigrant family’s narrow escape from Nazi oppression and certain death, and then finding continued success in America. Another highlight for me was researching and writing an article on the history of ABMA in celebration of its 100th year in 2017. It took a lot of research but I tracked down the founding companies behind the organization, many of which were founded in the 1800s and continue to flourish to this day. Some of these companies still supplying the industry have backgrounds far afield from what they do today. For example, in the 1800s, Dupont was the largest gunpowder supplier to the U.S. Military.
What do think is the key strength of Brushware?
Thanks to the succession of ownership, it’s a first-class publication in all aspects. It continues to be the dominant publication covering this industry, providing articles and information vital to our readers. Additionally, the magazine has never become stagnant or comfortable with where it is at any given time, resulting in continued evolution.
Is there anything about writing for Brushware that might come as a surprise to the readers?
May not be a surprise to some, but the publishers of the magazine have seldom dictated what stories its writers pursue. When they have, they’ve always sought our input and opened a discussion. Also, they’ve always sought our suggestions for articles.
Do you have any favorite aspects of the current Brushware magazine and portfolio?
I enjoy reading the publisher column which is a good lead into the content. Also the features and departments, especially the “Economic Dashboard.” I also like the creative advertisements. Their quality gels well with the magazine’s creative layout and graphics quality.
How do you think Brushware can best serve the brush industry community going forward?
Continuing doing what we’ve always done, while always looking forward.
Do you have any final thoughts or comments on the 125th-year anniversary of Brushware?
I’m proud of having written for the magazine all these years and being part of its 125th-year anniversary. Now that’s longevity worthy of celebration! It’s amazing that the 200th anniversary is just 75 years away, and a gold watch for me.
Manufacturing is in a state of flux. After seven straight months of contraction in manufacturing, it is not surprising manufacturers are thinking about cutting back. On the other hand, in many industries manufacturers continue to have a robust backlog and are growing faster than their capacity. Simultaneously, there is significant transition and movement around the globe in the areas of dual-source suppliers, reshoring, nearshoring, consolidation and other changes. In this volatile environment, opportunities will abound for those manufacturers focused on creating predictable revenue and resilient operations.
Smart manufacturers are getting ahead of customer demand instead of waiting to respond to changing conditions. A few of the best practices in addition to reviewing historical trends and growth patterns include getting on top of sales quotes, getting in sync with key customers, bringing market and industry conditions into the mix, asking your customer-facing team members for input and proactively and aggressively managing inventory. These factors roll up into the demand planning and sales forecasting process within your SIOP (Sales Inventory Operations Planning), also known as S&OP process. Once you establish a sales forecast, you cannot rest. Depending on your situation, you must review exceptions and changes on a monthly if not weekly cadence.
For example, in working with an aerospace and defense manufacturer, the team was unsure if the demand was predictable enough to order materials and hire resources. Thus, we analyzed data, collaborated with sales and marketing, reviewed customer portals and evaluated historical trends with contracts. Although the team was uncomfortable, we didn’t enable analysis paralysis. Instead, we took the plunge and piloted forecasts with 70 percent confidence. The team’s success seemed in direct opposition to their discomfort as their forecast accuracy was one of the highest in almost 20 years of consulting. Most importantly, by creating predictable revenue, operations had time to prepare. Customer service rates (OTD, on-time-in-full) shot up and costs went down. Margins improved by five percent.
Although having a directionally correct demand plan will provide an automatic boost in operational performance with solid leadership, it is no longer enough. To navigate volatility and prepare to take advantage of opportunities, manufacturers must be ready to scale on a dime or pull back without losing
momentum. Creating resilient operations is key to success. SIOP remains integral to evaluating alternative strategies to fulfill demand such as make vs buy, dual source suppliers, reallocating production among sites, etc. Adding flexibility to operations is also important and can be achieved through cross-training, utilizing temporary employees, evaluating contract resources, outsourcing support functions such as maintenance, evaluating shift configurations and overtime strategies and much more. Utilizing technology with automation, robotics, 3D printing/additive manufacturing and other strategies can provide quick scalability while maintaining profitability.
For example, a food and beverage manufacturer invested heavily in cross-training and advanced skills development so that critical resources could respond quickly, and they developed strong relationships with temporary resource partners to be prepared to fill in rapidly when needed or scale back without losing meaningful critical talent. They also focused attention on automation, technology and labor scheduling to ensure efficiency and scalability and they were able to take advantage of opportunities to substantially grow the business.
Smart manufacturers will prioritize key customers’ needs and monitor quotes, sales orders, changing market conditions and forecast closely. From an operations perspective, they will create flexibility, resilience and scalability. They will utilize technology to not only save money and create a superior customer experience but also to ensure rapid scalability and flexibility as well as leverage SIOP, best practice demand planning processes and uncommon common sense operational programs to ensure manufacturing success.

Businesses large and small are having a tough time finding and keeping enough employees. The traditional top-down dynamic between the hiring manager and candidate no longer seems to work. Effective recruitment and retention require a new, highly personalized approach using the communication vehicles favored by Gen Zers, today’s fastest-growing workforce demographic.
How do you find good workers? And how do you keep them once they’re hired? Those questions have become top of mind for employers everywhere. Job candidates are scarce on the ground. The few who entertain offers end up turning them down. And too many of the ones actually hired go AWOL on the first day of work. It’s all part and parcel of a tight labor market that shows no sign of loosening any time soon.
The root problem lies in today’s fastest-growing workplace demographic. People under the age of 25 — the so-called Gen Zers — differ substantially from previous generations. “The candidate pool has changed dramatically from the past,” says Mel Kleiman, director of Houston-based Humetrics, an employment consulting firm (www.humetrics.com). “They differ in their job expectations and in how they communicate with employers.”
Approach Gen Zers the right way, goes the reasoning, and you’ll boost the odds of good hires sticking around. The first thing to understand is the young generation’s high level of trust and devotion to the Internet. “Employers really have to spend their biggest recruiting dollars on social media,” says
Don Phin, a management consultant in Coronado, California (www.donphin.com). “That’s where Gen Zers hang out.”
But which social media channel, exactly? Turns out it makes a difference. “Gen Zers generally are not on Facebook like some of their older peers,” says Toronto-based management consultant Randall Craig (www.randallcraig.com). “They tend to consume more of their content on TikTok and Instagram. So that’s where companies need to make their presence known.”
Posting on such media carries risks and complications of its own. The #1 problem is setting the right tone. Just duplicating the stuff sent to traditional media outlets won’t cut it. Instead, posts have to reach the younger crowd through a flavor of irreverence, something normally at odds with the corporate image.
Asking an employer’s current crop of Gen Z employees to help post is a good idea. So is establishing a presence on a number of platforms, respecting the milieu of each. “Posts on LinkedIn or your corporate website need to be more traditional, while posts on Instagram, Twitter or TikTok may be more playful,” says Craig.
Current workers can also perform a recruiting function on other vehicles. “Encourage employees to share open positions on messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and through texting,” says Craig. “Private shares of such information come with implicit third-party endorsements.”
Finally, employee referral programs can play a vital role in attracting quality people. “Employers need to make it easy for everyone to recruit and give them enough reward to incentivize them,” says Phin. Leaderboards can foster a spirit of competition, while bonuses can reward success.
Social media posts must include the right bait to make prospects bite. That means including information they want to see. “The top three things employers can put in their postings to attract Gen Zers are salary, benefits and scheduling flexibility,” says Jason Dorsey, President of The Center for Generational Kinetics, Austin, Texas (www.jasondorsey.com).
The salary part might seem surprising, given the reputation the youngest working generation has for social concerns. “Gen Zers value salary not because they’re greedy, but because of their life experience,” says Dorsey. “They went through the Great Recession with their parents, then they entered the workforce and lost their jobs because of the pandemic. Now they’re trying to make up for lost time — an impetus all the more urgent with inflation going through the roof.”
Putting information in the right place is also important: The above three elements must appear at the top of each job posting because Gen Zers read only the first paragraph of posts on their mobile devices. “You need to put all the sizzle that’s normally at the bottom of your job postings all the way at the top,” says Dorsey.
One more factor to include in your job postings: stability. Again, this is not a characteristic many people would associate as important to young people. But it is — because of their experiences with job losses resulting from the Great Recession and the pandemic. “Stability is a hidden behavioral driver for Gen Zers that employers need to be talking about,” says Dorsey.
Once Gen Z candidates arrive at the workplace, they must be impressed by what they see. “The picture today is less about candidates selling themselves to employers and more about employers selling themselves to candidates,” says Craig. Given the mobility of the current workforce, people today want to make sure they move to a place they want to stay.
“Each business must have a unique employment proposition,” says Kleiman. “It’s the flip side of the old ‘unique selling proposition’ which told why customers should patronize a company. Today employers need workers more than customers. So they have to answer the question ‘Why should prospects come work for me?’”
The answer can be a detailed array of qualities, or it can be simple, noted Kleiman. “One company boiled it down to two key words: ‘The reason you come to work for us is because we care. We care about our employees, we care about our customers, we care about the community, we care about our environment.”
Part of a unique employment proposition is a company culture that is attractive to Gen Zers. “Every organization must look inward and ask, ‘Are there things we need to change in how we work with our employees and in our culture?” says John Dyer, a consultant in team-based process improvement. “Do we need to reexamine the values we demonstrate day in and day out to develop an environment that attracts the best people?’”
Inclusion is a vital part of that environment for a generation deeply concerned about social issues. “Gen Zers are the most diverse generation we’ve ever had,” says Dorsey. “They celebrate diversity and expect it everywhere.”
Creating an attractive work environment is one thing; getting the word out to the public is another. “Every business needs to be concerned about its employment branding,’” says William J. Rothwell, Professor of Workforce Education and Development at Pennsylvania State University. “What do people in the community say about working at the company?”
The obvious place to start a public campaign is a company’s own website. The most important section is the page with job site listings. “It’s surprising how few employers have built great career sections on their websites,” says Craig. “And by that I mean not just position descriptions, but content that uniquely helps potential candidates understand an organization’s culture and opportunities.” And don’t make it difficult for people to find your career page. They shouldn’t have to use the site map.
One required element: video. “Gen Zers don’t read,” says Phin. “They watch.” He says that employers should post three videos. In the first, the CEO should say who the company is and where it’s going. In the second, a narrator should describe a ‘Day in the Life’ of a typical employee of the business. In the third, employees themselves should give testimonials on how attractive the company is as a place to work.
Businesses should also take steps to improve their images on www.glassdoor.com — the website prospects use to assess prospective employers. Any negative reviews can highlight needed systemic or cultural changes.
Given all of the above, the employer who lands the interest of an attractive Gen Z candidate must strike while the iron is hot. Doing so requires a streamlined hiring process. “Reduce the hoops you require candidates to jump through by judging the necessity of every hiring step,” says Rebecca Mazin, a cofounder of the Tarrytown, New York-based human resources firm Recruit Right (www.recruitright.net). “If you find a candidate through social networking, for example, don’t demand a resume before you talk to them. They might not have one.”
You hire a bright prospect. They sound enthused. You schedule their first day on the company calendar.
And they don’t show up.
You’ve been ghosted. It’s a common phenomenon in this tight labor market, where people can apply for a job with the click of a button — and counteroffers can lure away the best of the best.
“When people accept a job today, we have been given permission to sell them on showing up for their first day of work,” says Jason Dorsey, President of The Center for Generational Kinetics, Austin, Texas (www.genhq.com). “So we need to take the right steps before their first scheduled day to keep them engaged and excited.”
Hiring managers can muffle the siren call of competing job offers by doing two things:
1) Placing a call to the candidate to establish a personal relationship, and to emphasize why the new hire is perfect for the company.
2) Following up with a series of texts providing details about the new position, useful information about perks and benefits and invitations to call or text back with questions.
Faced with a one-to-one approach such as this, the flattered candidate will feel they are not going to work for some anonymous company, but for an individual with whom they have established rapport.
And don’t demand they fill out a job application, either. That’s making them jump through another hoop that a competing employer may not require. Mazin suggested having the candidate fill out the application as part of the onboarding process after the hire takes place.
Applications should be fully completable on mobile devices. “Gen Zers have a different natural relationship with technology than other generations,” says Dorsey. “When they apply for a job they expect to be able to complete the entire application on their phone. And it must be easy to do.”
Unfortunately, more than 50% of phone applications are never finished, added Dorsey. That’s why it’s important to collect an email address or cell phone number early, allowing the employer to send an email or text a day or two later inviting the candidate to finish the job. The app should save the previously entered information so the candidate is spared any unnecessary work.
The follow-up invitation should be heavily personalized with phrases such as “We think you might be a great fit” and “We would love for you to finish your application.” Those messages can make all the difference when it comes to completed applications, says Dorsey.
Are you taking the right steps to hire and maintain Gen Zers? Find out by taking this quiz — score 10 points for each “yes” answer. Then total your score and check your rating at the bottom of the chart.
Have you instituted the following practices?
• Placed job listings on appropriate social media
• Asked employees to post openings on their own accounts
• Initiated an employee referral program
• Included salary, benefits and scheduling flexibilities in job postings
• Emphasized stability in the hiring message
• Positioned vital information at the top of postings
• Created a workplace attractive to Gen Zers
• Burnished and tracked the company’s public image
• Streamlined the application process
• Established training programs designed for Gen Zers
What’s your score? 80 or more: Congratulations. You have gone a long way toward recruiting and retaining Gen Z candidates. Between 60 and 80: It’s time to fine-tune your strategy. Below 60: Your business is at risk. Take action on the suggestions in the accompanying story.
The hiring manager’s job isn’t done when the Gen Z candidate becomes an employee. “What gets somebody to apply is different from what will get someone to stay,” says Dorsey. Employers must work on retention from day one.
A personalized introduction to the business can make a tremendous impression. So can an entrance interview designed to discover what makes a new hire tick. “Find out why the person came to your organization,’ suggested Phin. “Did they choose your company for the pay? The type of work? The location? Because their friends are there? Their answers will help you design a program that encourages them and their friends to stay aboard.”
New employees must also be trained properly. Many Gen Zers are older than previous generations when first entering the workforce and they are new to the business environment. They need to learn the right behavior and attitudes.
Training for Gen Zers must be done in a specific way. “We often tend to think of training in terms of linear steps,” says Dorsey. “But the younger people are not like that. They are more outcome-driven, so they need to see the end scene first.” Show newcomers what success looks like, then walk them through it while they have the end game in mind. Provide specific examples of expected performance. Employers can ensure successful onboarding through frequent check-ins during probation periods.
Go where the prospects are. Give them the data they need. Then onboard new hires in a way that makes them stay. Employers can win the modern war for talent by combining those three elements into a powerful recruitment and retention package.
“If you want to get the most out of Gen Zers, you’ve got to support them on every dimension,” says Craig. “If you do that, they will perform and tell their friends to come work at your shop. And when they do leave they’ll post good things about your company on Glassdoor.”
Above all, employers must create a dynamic workplace that catches the eye of Gen Zers. “It’s easy for people in business to get caught up in what they do,” says Phin. “But it’s who they are that makes the difference. Employers who are attractive don’t have to worry about finding anybody.”

The ISM® U.S. Manufacturing PMI® was reported at 46.9 percent for May, down slightly from the 47.1 percent reading in April. The figure represented a seventh consecutive month in contraction territory for U.S. manufacturers and continued an overall downward trend that dates back to November of 2021.
“Price instability remains and future demand is uncertain as companies continue to work down overdue deliveries and backlogs,” says Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “Seventy-six percent of manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP) is contracting, up from 73 percent in April. A larger number of industries contracted strongly, as the proportion of manufacturing GDP registering a composite PMI® calculation at or below 45 percent — a good barometer of overall manufacturing weakness — increased to 31 percent in May, compared to 12 percent in April. May performance was clearly weaker compared to April.”
The May PMI reading indicates U.S. manufacturing firms are continuing to manage outputs to better match demand in the first half of 2023 and prepare for growth in the late summer/ early fall period. However, the report says there is clearly more
business uncertainty in May. Demand eased again, as new orders contracted at a faster rate, the new export orders index slightly improved to 50 percent, customers’ inventories remained at the low end of “too high” territory (a negative for future production) and the backlog of orders Index dropped to a level not seen since the Great Recession.
ISM® GROWTH SECTORS (4): Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Furniture and Related Products; Transportation Equipment; and Fabricated Metal Products.
ISM® CONTRACTION SECTORS (12): Wood Products; Primary Metals; Apparel, Leather and Allied Products; Textile Mills; Paper Products; Printing and Related Support Activities; Petroleum and Coal Products; Chemical Products; Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products; Computer and Electronic Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components; Plastics and Rubber Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; and Machinery.
EUROPE: The HCOB Eurozone Manufacturing PMI was reported at 44.8 percent for May to continue a four-month downwart trend and reach the lowest reading since May 2020. Output dropped and new orders and exports also experienced rapid deceleration. Backlogs decreased and employment was at a 28-month low. Input costs decreased and output charges also moved down, while business confidence also fell but consumer confidence was nearly flat.
CHINA: The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI saw an unexpected increase to 50.9 percent for May after registering 49.5 percent in April. Output and new orders jumped as exports continued to increase. Buying activity was positive but employment had a sharp dropoff. Delivery times improved and input prices fell thanks to lower prices of metals, food, and fuel. Output prices moved down as market competition heated up. Consumer confidence was up slightly, but business confidence fell. "Current economic growth lacks internal drive; and market entities lack sufficient confidence, highlighting the importance of restoring demand," says Dr. Wang Zhe, an economist at Caixin Insight Group.
GERMANY: The HCOB Manufacturing PMI for Germany fell to 43.2 percent for May and was the lowest reported figure since May 2020. Customers de-stocked and that led to weaker demand and lower output for German manufacturers. New orders were at a six-month low and exports were also weak. Lead times continued to improve and input prices fell. Employment improved, but business confidence fell for the first time in 2023.
INDIA: Indian manufacturing continued to set a strong pace as the S&P Global India Manufacturing PMI was reported at 58.7 percent for May, up from a 57.2 percent reading in April. The figure represented the strongest improvement in factory output since 2020 as demand remains strong. Output, new orders, exports and employment all saw strong improvement for the country's manufacturers. Input purchasing continued to grow which pushed up inventories. Lead times improved, while input costs rose slightly. Output prices hit a new one-year high based on strong demand. Business confidence reached a new five-month high.
ITALY: Italian manufacturing saw the steepest contraction since 2020 as the HBOC Italy Manufacturing PMI was reported at 45.9 percent for May, down from 46.8 percent the previous month. New work dropped, but employment activity saw modest improvement. Input prices fell and output prices also decreased for a third straight month. Accordingly, business and consumer confidence also saw decreases.
UNITED KINGDOM: The S&P Global / CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI was reported at 47.1 percent for May, reaching a fourth-month low. This was slightly above projections but the weak performance was driven by a struggling domestic market, lower export orders and client inventory reductions. Those factors all negated the benefits from improved supply chain logistics. On a positive note, UK manufacturers saw input prices fall for the first time in more than three years.

“Demand continues to gain momentum due to new business pipelines finally yielding billable production. Personal care and home care are drivers.” Chemical Products
“We continue to have a strong backlog for our customer orders; however, new orders are slowing. Our supplier on-time delivery continues to be a challenge for us, and we still face price increases on a weekly basis. Labor shortages are getting better within our organization and throughout our supply chain.” Transportation Equipment
“Pricing seems to be becoming the primary focus of supply and sourcing teams, as customers and consumers are beginning to push back. While inflation is easing on some discretionary goods, high food costs persist across most categories.”
Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products
“Business is returning to pre-pandemic levels. There is increased demand in commercial/government markets and reduced demand in residential/consumer markets.” Machinery
“Less volatility in customer demand from one month to six months out; seeing signs of slowing in the second half of 2023 and potentially into early 2024. Logistics, particularly from East Asia, continue to return to historical-level transit times; Europe and India remain elevated. Supply shortages are limited to select items only. Suppliers are still seeking price increases but are too late to be asking now.”
Fabricated Metal Products
“Moderate increase in customer orders/ demand, supplier deliveries improving and raw material prices stable to soft.”
Plastics and Rubber Products
“Business conditions are good, demand remains strong, and we are continuing to ramp up production to keep up.”
Miscellaneous Manufacturing
“Industrial and high-tech demands are pushing out, as a slowdown is clear. This is stunting growth and currently making 2023 demand look flat to only slightly up, compared to original projections of 10-percent growth.” Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components
