1898
Happy New Year to the Brushware community! We’re excited to start our second year with the magazine and kick off an exciting new decade. Recently, I was on a call with a top industry leader and he referenced the long history of Brushware magazine. I had been waiting for the right time to write about the legacy of the magazine and what that means to me. Of course, this history is listed right there in the masthead in each issue – founded in 1898 as Brooms, Brushes & Handles and changing to Brooms, Brushes & Mops in 1924 before settling in with the more concise Brushware in 1948. I wanted a graphic to go along with this letter and a simple Google search led me to a blog post from the New York Public Library: 100 Years Club: LongLasting Business Periodicals at the NYPL. That post had a couple gems. First, Brushware is the ninth oldest active NYPL business publication. The second find was digitized versions of some of the issues that have now fallen into the public domain. The cover above is from the November 1904, Volume 7, Number 1 issue, which is the oldest I could find. I was immediately drawn in and spent most of the afternoon digging into the issue. In particular, the broomcorn crop reports captured my attention as I was fascinated to see that broomcorn was grown in my home state of Kansas. Probably what impressed me the most about the issue is the interaction (letters/contributions) from so many readers across the industry. I couldn’t help but think about how mechanical and challenging that kind of interaction must have been in 1904 … plus it showcased for me how vital the magazine was to the community. I am certainly proud of the 122-year legacy, but I’ve learned over the past year that 100 years is pretty much par for the course in this industry. I feel privileged to get the opportunity to work on a brand with such a long history and tradition and take on the challenge of upgrading to a modern 360-degree media business. All with the idea of continuing to be a vital resource, advocate and connecting point for the brushware community. With that in mind, I am not super patient by nature, and I have plenty on my wishlist for Brushware. Plus, I tend to focus on what we haven’t achieved yet. Yet, in thinking the legacy and in looking forward to a new decade, I did spend some time assessing our first year with Brushware. For the magazine, we’ve added a PMI report, an industry events calendar, key economic charts sand a fresh, streamlined design. Plus, we’ve added the digital edition version of each issue to expedite delivery and allow readers a chance to enjoy the magazine on a tablet or computer. Follow us on Issuu at: https://issuu.com/brushwaremag. We’ve also been on a continual improvement cycle for www.brushwaremag.com. We launched the new front-end site with news functionality in April and followed up with the Brushware Digest weekly newsletter in October. You can subscribe for free here: www.brushwaremag.com/enewsletter. We hope you like the improvements and I invite you to enjoy this first edition of 2020. Cheers to a great decade ahead!

Interbrush delights trade visitors from all over the world every four years. Photo by FWTM/Salzer-Deckert.
Looking Ahead to Interbrush 2020: May 6-8, 2020 May 2020 marks the 13th edition of Interbrush, the most important trade fair and the key global meeting point for the brush and broom industry. Interbrush 2020 will be held May 6-8, 2020, and open its doors in Freiburg, Germany, with approximately 200 exhibitors from 26 countries presenting across some 21,500 square meters of exhibition area while showcasing raw materials, semi-finished products and machines. At least 7,500 trade visitors from 90 countries are expected to visit the event, which is held every four years and brings in 10,000 additional overnight stays to Freiburg’s hotels. Anyone already planning to visit the trade fair who would like to order reduced-price entry tickets online can do so easily and securely online. “Print-at-home” tickets will be exchanged directly for visitor badges at the entrance to the trade fair. Visitor registration is now open at www.interbrush.com. As of early December, 95 percent of the booth area had already been booked, proving that Marco Minelli, CEO of the Minelli Group, is right when he says: “Being here is an absolute must: Interbrush represents our industry’s most important meeting point!” Back in 2016, at the end of the 12th trade fair, 98 percent of exhibitors already announced their intention to attend the next Interbrush. In addition, 90 percent of visitors declared they would definitely revisit their industry’s top trade fair in 2020, since, in the words of one visitor, “Even the atmosphere fires your enthusiasm!” Thanks to the Freiburg Convention Bureau, anyone travelling to Freiburg in May – whether exhibitor or trade visitor – has access to a special quota of hotel reservations, eliminating the need for time-consuming accommodation searches. And the opportunity to learn about the latest industry developments is not Freiburg’s only lure. The romantic city itself, located in one of Germany’s most beautiful regions and abounding with historic buildings and culinary delights, is a great attraction. In fact, it would be hard to find another place with so many award-winning restaurants and first-class wineries. Interbrush 2020 will bring together the representatives of a small but highly developed industry that thrives on high-tech products and constant innovation.

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS DUPONT FILAMENTS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS For more than 70 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.
HEALTH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - TOOTHBRUSH FILAMENTS The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, DuPont Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of DuPont™ Tynex®(nylon 612) and DuPont™ Herox®(nylon 610) . Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using DuPont filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, DuPont Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio BEAUTY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - FINE FILAMENTS DuPont™ Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from DuPont’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair. EFFICIENCY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – ABRASIVE FILAMENTS Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking for
ways to increase productivity. The emphasis is on getting more square feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extremes of the PH scale. The technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range that these filaments can be used in. Brushes made with these filaments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. DuPont™ Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need. CREATIVITY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – PAINTBRUSH FILAMENTS When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.
YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS
Recognition for being the global leader in filaments comes from our customers. You inspire us to make a difference in the world. We will continue to advance our innovations because we believe your BRUSH deserves the best FILAMENTS. filaments.dupont.com

Interclean Amsterdam 2020 Following its remarkable success in 2018, Interclean Amsterdam returns to the Dutch capital in 2020 for another edition of the world’s most advanced cleaning and hygiene show to be held May 12-15, 2020, at RAI Amsterdam. Attracting more than 33,000 attendees from across 143 countries, the 2018 event was a truly international affair. This year Interclean Amsterdam has the following areas to showcase: ROBOTICS: Recent advances made by manufacturers have been rapid and breath-taking. It’s an area that businesses need to stay up-to-date with if they don’t want to fall behind. Automated cleaning machines are widely used across different environments and industries. Interclean Amsterdam 2020 will be the place to see all the latest machines in action. The return of the Robot Arena offers attendees a practical, first-hand demonstration of current robotic capabilities. DATA: Data will drive the future of cleaning, and Interclean Amsterdam 2016 saw the introduction of the Management & Mobility pavilion, which featured exhibitors focused on developing software and apps that drive cleaning productivity. For 2020, more companies are uncovering the data that exists within their businesses and understanding how they can make the most of it to drive effective and efficient processes, and attendees will be able to see hands-on demonstrations of how innovative new software can supercharge their cleaning operations.
SUSTAINABILITY: With less than 12 years to avert a climate catastrophe, cleaning providers are working hard to adopt sustainable ways of working – from waste management to green cleaning. The Circular Economy will be a common thread linking many of the innovations on display at Interclean Amsterdam 2020. The Zero Waste Lab and its Anatomy of the Waste Bin workshop will show delegates exactly how to improve their waste management practices for a greener, cleaner future. In addition, the show will once again hold the Healthcare Cleaning Forum with important conversations around healthcare cleaning and infection prevention – featuring expert speakers such as Professor Didier Pittet, Alexandra Peters and Professor Pierre Parneix. Learn more about Interclean Amsterdam at www.intercleanshow.com.

SUSTAINABILITY IN PRACTICE WOMAtec Retrofit Doubles Lifetime of Used Machines
In addition to the new control, the complete mechanical overhaul is part of the retrofit.
T
he hot topic of 2019: sustainability. Everyone’s talking about it. Although much is discussed and published on the topic, the trend toward the throwaway society continues to grow. Daniel Köhler, Managing Director and owner of WOMAtec Maschinenbau GmbH, would like to reverse that. He sees great opportunity to conserve resources and implement concepts of sustainable production in a practical and realistic manner, especially in the German machine building industry. “Extremely robust and durable machines have always been built in Germany,” says Köhler. “We can take advantage of this simply by utilizing an already available resource: used machines.” These machines are brought to be state-of-the-art by Köhler and his team of more than 20 employees, and are then able to go back into the production cycle.
Daniel Köhler during the startup of his WOMAtec CNC brush control.
14 | www.brushwaremag.com
Along with machinery from the inventory of his second company, WOMA, an international second-hand machinery trader, Köhler works with machinery projects by contract. “Mostly, it is customer machines that come to us for a retrofit,” explains Köhler. He is responsible for the design and project planning in the company. Depending on how extensive the overhaul might be, even complete automation solutions are often designed and implemented. The heart of the WOMAtec Retrofit, however, is the new WOMAtec CNC control system.
A 20-year-old fully automatic Zahoransky nail-brush machine before, during and after completion of the WOMAtec CNC retrofit.
“Electronics are responsible for the limited life of the machines in most cases. The mechanics are still good, but the controls are defective and they are no longer reliable or the procurement of spare parts has become too difficult.” Owners of brush machines from the 1990s therefore face large investments in the near future. The WOMAtec CNC Retrofit is a cost-effective alternative. “Since the basic machine itself remains unchanged, existing mechanical spare parts continue to fit. And, after a little bit of training in the new user interface, everything stays the same for the operator,” says Köhler. The brush machine control specially developed by WOMAtec for up to five servo-controlled axes is based on components from Beckhoff and Festo. “This enables us to offer our customers long-term spare parts availability and the greatest possible independence in spare parts procurement. Nevertheless, we are of course available for spare parts supply and service,” Köhler says, referring to his highly qualified employees. In addition to programming and control cabinet construction, an entire mechanical
overhaul is also carried out in-house. For a retrofit, the existing machine is disassembled “down to the last screw” and is completely rebuilt again. “We tell our customers, ‘Every screw is new,’ to make it clear that our overhaul isn’t just a new paint job. After it’s been through our workshop, the machine is like new again,” Köhler explains. In order to guarantee a high quality standard, all necessary work, starting with welding and sheet metal work, sandblasting and painting, up to the CNC-controlled production of new parts, is largely done in the company’s own workshop. For this purpose, a recent investment in a new water jet cutting machine and a CNC machining center was made. “With our work, we breathe new life into old machines. We take the proven technology and give the owner an efficient and productive machine for another 20 years. For me, that’s sustainability in practice,” says Köhler. HAPPY CONSUMERS, SLOWING GROWTH
Economic Forecast 2020 By Phillip M. Perry Businesses face a challenging economic environment in 2020. Full employment, happy consumers, a robust housing market and low interest rates are supporting a decent economy. But the fallout from the tariff wars, a shaky stock market and a looming recession are creating uncertainty in the nation’s boardrooms and contributing to a slowdown in business activity.
A
slowing economy. Costly tariffs. Brexit angst. A presidential election. A shaky stock market. Rising labor costs. A looming recession. And happy consumers. Those are the ingredients of a mind-bending cocktail of economic uncertainty now eroding business confidence and capital investment. Despite a state of full employment, robust consumer spending, low interest rates and a strong housing market, forecasters are predicting a challenging operating environment in the year ahead.
Slowing Growth “We look for the economy to grow below its potential in 2020,” says Sophia Koropeckyj, Managing Director of Industry Economics at Moody’s Analytics, a research firm based in West Chester, Pa. (economy.com). “Corporate profit margins have been compressing noticeably as growth in labor costs has outpaced revenue growth. Shrinking margins are often associated with late-cycle expansions and often cause businesses to be more cautious in hiring and investment.” Moody’s expects the nation’s Gross National Product (GNP) to slow to 1.7 percent in 2020, down from a more normal 2.3 percent anticipated when 2019 numbers are finally tallied. The 2019 performance is a decline from the 2.9 percent growth clocked the previous year. (The GNP, the total of the goods and services produced by a nation, is the most commonly accepted measure of economic growth.)

Strong Hiring Reports from the field reinforce Moody’s calculations. “In the last part of 2019, concern about tariffs resulted in a slowdown in the automotive and agricultural sectors, and a lower level of orders caused some companies to reduce their sizes,” says Tom Palisin, Executive Director of The Manufacturers’ Association, a regional employers’ group based in York, Pa., with more than 370 member companies (mascpa.org). With its diverse membership in food processing, defense, fabrication and machinery building, Palisin’s group can be seen as something of a proxy for American industry. Despite the slowdown, says Palisin, most of his members continue to enjoy good profits and hire when they can find the right workers. That success, though, is tempered by a year-long gradual decline in the lead time required to fulfill orders—a common indication of decelerating revenues throughout the supply chain. “Manufacturers experienced significant lead time in the first quarter of 2019 as a result of high demand and capital spending,” says Palisin. “Lead time shortened as the year progressed to what is now an average level. We expect lead times to remain average in 2020, due to headwinds that may moderate economic growth.”
Housing Rebound Confident consumers are maintaining a steady drumbeat of interest in housing, another critical driver of the economy. Moody’s expects 2020 to be the first year of a strong residential construction recovery led by single-family homes. Housing starts are projected to grow 7.0 percent in 2020. This comes off a rocky 2019 in which they expected to drop by 0.7 percent when the year’s numbers are finally tallied.
Moody’s expects 2020 to be the first year of a strong residential construction recovery led by single-family homes. Housing starts are projected to grow 7.0 percent in 2020.
Happy Consumers The current economic picture is not lacking bright spots. The most pronounced are consumers who seem largely content with the way the economy is working out, thanks to healthy employment levels that are filling pockets with spending money. That’s important, because consumer spending is a powerful driver of business activity, representing some 70 percent of the nation’s economy. The unemployment rate was running at an enviable 3.7 percent toward the end of 2019, well below what many economists label as “full employment.” Employers have been consistent in their hunt for workers to fill a growing number of positions. “Monthly job growth has been more than enough to keep up with the growth in the working age population,” says Koropeckyj. Looking ahead to 2020, economists expect recession fears to have a dampening effect on the labor market. “Unemployment is expected to edge slightly higher to 3.9 percent by the end of 2020, due largely to a deceleration of job growth,” says Koropeckyj. “We expect job growth to steadily decelerate and cease altogether in the second half of the year.” For the time being at least, happy shoppers are good news for retail, an important driver of the national economy. Moody’s expects core retail sales to increase by 4.0 percent when 2019 numbers are finally tallied, up from 3.4 percent in the previous year. (Core retail sales exclude the volatile auto and gasoline segments.) As for 2020, Moody’s expects retail sales to increase by only 2.3 percent. “A deceleration of job growth means fewer new people will enter the ranks of active shoppers,” says Scott Hoyt, Senior
18 | www.brushwaremag.com
Director of Consumer Economics for Moody’s Analytics. And he says that will exert some downward pressure on retail sales growth that may more than offset the positive effect of the higher wages, and thus the greater disposable income, characteristic of a tightening labor market.
Why the dismal 2019 experience? “There have been a number of obstacles to stronger residential construction,” says Koropeckyj. “The first is a shortage of specialized workers. The second is the prevalence of strict residential zoning regulations, especially in dense urban areas. The third is a shortage of residentially-zoned land within commuting distance of business areas in some metro areas in the mountain west and inland south.”
Older Millennials now reaching prime home-buying age are expected to drive the 2020 housing recovery. They will be entering the market at a time when the housing inventory-to-sales ratio is at record lows. The fact that zoning is generally less restrictive for single-family as opposed to multifamily construction translates into a much stronger single-family construction forecast. Relatively low mortgage rates will also help, though these are expected to start rising in 2021. The housing rebound will be tempered to some degree by declining affordability, according to Moody’s. The median price for existing single-family homes is expected to rise 4.1 percent in 2019 and 2.9 percent in 2020, compared to 4.7 percent growth in 2018. The deceleration of price growth in 2020 is due largely to the increase in housing starts bringing more units to the marketplace as well as price resistance from buyers. “Even though home prices will decelerate, they will still increase and ownership will become even more out of reach for many households than it is today,” says Koropeckyj. Banks, for their part, seem to be filling their critical roles in a robust housing market. “Mortgage lending has been continuing unabated and largely concentrated among borrowers with high credit scores,” says Koropeckyj. “We expect this pattern to hold in the future.” Interest rates are expected to continue to play their vital role in supporting mortgages. “In 2019, interest rates turned lower rather than higher, which was a surprise,” says Hoyt. “The reason was the unanticipated trade war, which was clearly a negative, and reduced economic prospects significantly relative to expectations.”

Tight Labor If robust employment is keeping the consumer happy and the housing market bustling, employers are tearing their hair out. “Because of the tight labor situation, our companies have not been able to add as many workers as they would like,” says Palisin. “As a result, it can be difficult for many of them to take on new business. We expect that to remain a problem in 2020.” Industry is also seeing more job shifting, in which people leave their current positions for opportunities elsewhere. “Employers are now looking at whether they need to adjust their compensation policies to retain the talent they have developed,” says Palisin. “So far we have seen only a gradual increase in the cost of labor, but we expect more accelerated wage growth in 2020.” A tight labor market is expected to be with us awhile. “The workforce will be put under continuing pressure in the future,” says Palisin. “Over the next 15 years, for the first time in the US, there will be more people of retirement age than under the age of 18. And a contraction in immigration is also putting pressure on the workforce. Companies will have to look for other ways to grow without hiring workers who might not be available.”
“Rather than invest in recruiting and training people for labor-intensive jobs, our members have been investing in automation and capital equipment,” says Palisin.
If you can’t get enough people, let robots do the work. That’s the mantra for the employer of the future. “Rather than invest in recruiting and training people for labor-intensive jobs, our members have been investing in automation and capital equipment,” says Palisin. “We expect this trend to continue in 2020.” Not all employers, though, can foot the bill. “While larger companies can automate internally, small and mid-sized ones need to call in external consulting resources,” says Palisin. “That can be challenging because many smaller businesses do not have the financial resources to do so.” Indeed, manufacturers around the nation seem to be shy of investing too much in capital improvements of any kind. “Manufacturers are nervous, despite their success in reaching their earnings estimates,” says Bill Conerly, Principal of his own consulting firm in Lake Oswego, Ore. (conerlyconsulting.com). He says this is showing up in capital spending numbers, which were big in 2018 coming out of tax reform, but are not as big now. Even forays into automation are on hold. “Labor costs are going up and good workers are hard to find,” says Conerly. “Interest rates are low and companies are flush with cash. You would think that investment in labor saving technology would be going great guns, but it’s not. Why? Uncertainty. Businesses wonder if economic conditions in the next few years will justify more capacity or even more efficiency.” The numbers from Moody’s support Conerly’s observations. “We expect real nonresidential fixed investment to grow by 3.2 percent annualized in 2019 and 2.8 percent in 2020,” says Koropeckyj. “That’s well below the 5.4 percent average over the last two years.”
Disrupted Supply Chains
20 | www.brushwaremag.com
A scarcity of skilled workers is just one of the many headwinds restraining American businesses. Another is supply chain confusion—a direct result of the China trade wars. “Uncertainty about international trade rules can throw havoc into the production system,” says Conerly. And that havoc is only intensified by the complexity of modern supply chains. “Parts for finished goods are coming from multiple countries. The more complex the chain, the less resilient it is, and the more opportunity for things to turn bad,” he says.
Adjusting to supply chain disruption is easier said than done. “Some of our companies are trying to move their supply chains out of China, but that means abandoning long-held relationships,” says Palisin. “Validating new suppliers is costly and time consuming. Smaller and mid-sized companies, in particular, do not have the resources to quickly find new sources of materials.” Lending urgency to the supply chain disruption is the knowledge that long-established relationships, once lost, can be difficult to restore once trade tensions ease. And on the flip side of the trade coin, domestic makers fear losing their overseas markets permanently to rivals from other countries. In a reflection of these supply chain disruptions and of the slowing global and domestic economy, Moody’s expects corporate profits to increase by only 1.9 percent when figures for 2019 are finally tallied. This less-than-stellar increase only adds to the uncertainty that is keeping companies from investing in the very capital projects that can help drive economic growth. Moody’s expects better results in 2020, when corporate profit growth should increase by some 4.9 percent. “Contributing to the rebound is a weaker US dollar, which will improve the competitive positions of US goods, so that profits from abroad will increase,” says Koropeckyj. She adds that while the 2020 figure looks comparatively robust, it remains weaker than the average 5.2 percent growth between 2009 and 2018.
The Road Ahead Despite the uncertainty that characterizes many areas of the economy, a healthy labor market and high consumer confidence have done a good job propping up a decelerating business environment. Will they continue to do so? And when will the inevitable recession arrive? That last question is particularly important, as two-thirds of the nation’s chief financial officers expect the United States to tip into an economic downturn by the third quarter of 2020, according to a Duke University/CFO Global Business Outlook survey. In the early months of the new year, economists suggest monitoring financial news for indicators of a recession, often defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. Increasing stock volatility is one such indicator, as is an inversion in the Treasury yield curve when short term rates are higher than long term ones. But perhaps the most important indicator of pending trouble is a downturn in the employment picture. “The job market is key,” says Koropeckyj. “If businesses begin to lay off workers, that will be fodder for recession. Watch for changes in monthly employment growth and in weekly claims for unemployment insurance benefits.” Rising unemployment, says Koropeckyj, will result in a decline in the consumer spending that has been the driving gear of a healthy economic machine. “Once unemployment starts rising, we are either already in a recession or will be in one very soon.”

Maximizing Digital G Marketing Tax Deductions
rowing a brush, broom or mop business today relies on solid communication with potential customers. Without a solid marketing plan, it is very difficult to collect leads, build the operation’s “brand” or increase sales. As important and effective as traditional marketing is, digital marketing is now entrenched in most marketing budgets as a key channel for most businesses.
By Mark E. Battersby
To qualify as tax deductible, at least in the United States, advertising and marketing expenses must only be reasonable and directly related to the broom, brush or mop manufacturer, supplier or retailer’s business. Unfortunately, in addition to neglecting the deductibility of web marketing expenses, many manufacturers and suppliers alltoo-often lump advertising, promotions, public relations and other sales support expenses under the “marketing” heading.
Viva La Difference Separating advertising and promotion budgets is the first step to reducing costs with tax deductions. In the eyes of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), advertising generally consists of paid, scripted messages directed at potential customers. Promotion, on the other hand, is defined as paid exposure for the business. Advertising that does not directly relate to the manufacturer or supplier’s services or products, such as supporting legislation or promoting a charity, may or may not be tax deductible. Promotional expenses are expenditures made by the business to make its products or services better known. The IRS considers promotional expenses to be tax-deductible as business expenses—provided they are “ordinary and necessary.”

The IRS has yet to issue formal guidance on the treatment of website development costs. However, informal internal guidance suggests that one appropriate approach is to treat the costs like an item of software and depreciate them over three years.
Web Marketing And Other Expenses Marketing via social media is becoming increasingly popular as well as increasingly necessary. The expense of social media creation and ongoing account management are considered advertising expenses and can be claimed as a tax deduction in the year paid or incurred. Not only are a broom, brush or mop manufacturer or suppliers’ website costs deductible, but also its internet marketing/advertising expenses. In fact, many, but not all, of the contracted website and marketing services can be deducted in the same year as they are incurred. Unfortunately, the cost of a few services can by recovered only through the long amortization write-off period. A number of tried and true digital marketing tools exist that can make things a lot easier and effective. Social media dashboards such as Hootsuite, a social media management platform that supports social network integration for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube, have long proven useful in business-to-business marketing as well as consumer-oriented advertising and marketing. Much like traditional ad placement, online ad placement is tax deductible. So too, are sponsored ads on social media sites such as the following: • Google AdWords are used to attract new customers or clients instantly; a simple campaign can be set up in minutes and display search results within a couple of hours. • Pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns. Like other internet marketing and advertising expenses, the cost for a PPC campaign also falls within the miscellaneous advertising expense deduction. • Facebook ad campaigns. • Twitter ad campaigns. • Display banner ad campaigns. • Costs for hiring an agency to conduct any of these campaigns. • On-Page and Off-Page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) efforts generally involve a long-term campaign to keep your website at the top of search engine result pages.

Don’t forget old-fashioned goodwill advertising. According to the IRS, a broom, brush or mop business can “usually” deduct the cost of goodwill advertising that keeps the operation’s name in front of the public—or potential customers. Thus, even in the eyes of the IRS, if a business expects to benefit in some shape or form from a promotional activity, the cost of institutional or goodwill advertising may be deducted. Goodwill advertising includes: • Promotional activities that ask people to donate for charity • Getting a business sponsor • Distributing product samples Unfortunately, labor costs involved in organizing such activities cannot be deducted. Actually, it is necessary that funds be paid in order to record it as advertising expense or a deduction. On the off chance that the website is being used for publicizing, web support costs can be deducted as a promotional cost. In the event the site is utilized for sales and has an e-commerce option, it is a sales expense and is considered independently. Of course, designing and maintenance costs even for an e-commerce website are deductible.
Deductions For Digital Marketing Digital marketing activities that currently qualify as tax deductible expenses include website costs and fees. Manufacturers and suppliers usually incur a number of expense while procuring a website, including domain registration and hosting fees. And, don’t forget the cost associated with developing, designing and maintaining the website. The IRS has yet to issue formal guidance on the treatment of website development costs. However, informal internal guidance suggests that one appropriate approach is to treat the costs like an item of software and depreciate them over three years. It is clear, however, that taxpayers who pay large amounts to develop sophisticated sites have been allocating their costs to items such as software development (currently deductible like research and development costs), utilizing the Section 179 first-year expensing election or even as currently deductible advertising expenses.

Website content that is not advertising will usually be currently deductible, or written off over a multi-year period, depending on its useful life. The cost of acquiring a domain name, on the other hand, is considered a capital asset, is not deductible and cannot be depreciated over a period of time. Fortunately, website design and content are considered fixed assets and qualify as Section 179 first-year expenses and are fully deductible. They also may qualify for “bonus” depreciation purposes and a 100-percent write-off. It’s a similar story for depreciable computer software. In reality, the classification of web design and development services depend on when the work was done, who did it and the specifics of the actual work. If, for example, an outside contractor designs a simple templated website for informational purposes that does not require extensive custom programming, it can be capitalized and the expenditures amortized over its “useful life” (usually three years) once put into service. Or, depending on the operation’s accounting practices, the cost could be deductible as an advertising expense in the year it was completed.
Creating Content
• Cost for hosting the site as well as the domain fee • Cost for any premium services (such as add-ons or plug-ins for the business’ site) • Cost for maintenance If a new blog was created and uses freelance bloggers for its content, be sure to keep records of all related expenses because they can often be tax deductions as well. If the website was purchased, the manufacturer, supplier or retailer is required to amortize the cost over a three-year period. Content or design updates and ongoing maintenance are considered advertising and can be deducted in the same year. It is a similar story for hosting, domains and other similar products that are usually deducted the same year. Up to $5,000 of so-called “startup” expenses, can be deducted in the first year—even when the website is built before the business opens its doors. While that immediate deduction for startup costs is reduced, dollar-for-dollar when start-up costs exceed $50,000, the balance is recoverable over a 15-year period.
The Digital Future
Content is often the driving force in any digital marketing strategy. The importance of good content that is both relevant and consistent cannot be overlooked. Since good content can require much time and effort, many manufacturers and suppliers outsource their content creation.
Today, almost all businesses rely on the internet in one form or another. Social media and SEO are increasingly valuable tools for marketing the brush, broom or mop operation’s brand online. Naturally, as mentioned, these marketing expenses must be ordinary and necessary.
Outsourcing can be as basic as hiring a professional blog writer to create a good stream of quality blog content. The blog content, in turn, can establish the business as an industry authority.
An ordinary expense is one that is common and accepted in the manufacturer or supplier’s industry. A necessary expense is one that is helpful and appropriate for the trade or business.
Or, the brush, broom or mop business can rely on the skills of others, such as professional photographers or video creators. Other invaluable industry professionals include web designers or social media managers.
Thus, many of the costs associated with creating, updating or maintaining websites to promote the business can be written off. Outside consultants used to manage the operation’s social media accounts are also a tax-deductible expense.
Website Development Costs Here’s a look at several specific website-related expenditures: • Cost for the design of the website by an outside contractor hired for this purpose • Cost for the template if design is purchased pre-made
26 | www.brushwaremag.com
It’s important to remember to keep documentation and detailed records of how items related to marketing were used. Above all, every brush, broom and mop manufacturer and supplier should always consult with a tax professional to ensure maximum write-offs for all advertising and marketing expenditures.

US PMI Numbers Show Stability After Long Decline European Manufacturing PMI Climbs for Second Month The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported a slightly lower US PMI of 48.1 percent for November after registering positive movement in October with 48.3 percent. That followed the three-year low of 47.8 percent in September and could indicate a new direction for manufacturing. However, the perception is that a number below 50 indicates shrinking activity for manufacturers. IHS Markit, on the other hand, reported a US PMI of 52.6 for November, which represents a seven-month high and was said to be a sign of expansion in production and new orders. The ISM report says that November was the fourth consecutive month of PMI® contraction, and at a faster rate compared to the prior month. Demand contracted, with the New Orders Index contracting faster. “Global trade remains the most significant cross-industry issue,” says Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the Institute for Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “Among the six big industry sectors, Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products remains the strongest, while Fabricated Metal Products is the weakest. Overall, sentiment this month is neutral regarding near-term growth.”
SECTOR GROWTH RATIO: 5/13 From the ISM Report on Business, the ratio of sectors reporting growth has moved from three versus 15 in September to five versus 13 in November. GROWTH SECTORS: Apparel, Leather and Allied Products; Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products; Paper Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; and Computer and Electronic Products. CONTRACTION SECTORS: Wood Products; Printing and Related Support Activities; Furniture and Related Products; Textile Mills; Fabricated Metal Products; Transportation Equipment; Primary Metals; Plastics and Rubber Products; Petroleum and Coal Products; Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Machinery; Chemical Products; and Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components. EUROPE: Looking across the Atlantic, the IHS Markit Eurozone Manufacturing PMI improved to 46.9 percent in November, slightly above the October number of 45.9, which followed a five-year low in September. The November figure represents 10 straight months of contraction in factory activity for Europe, but at the slowest rate in three months. However, all nations covered by the IHS survey indicated some optimism that output would be higher than present levels in the next 12 months. ISM REPORT COMMENTS “Business level is similar to October.” (Computer and Electronic Products) “Chemical industry has been slow globally, but the curve seems to be flattening.” (Chemical Products) “Economic uncertainty continues. Our outlook on future business is cautious, yet positive.” (Transportation Equipment) “Economy is holding up. Business is staying constant. The same challenges persist — foreign exchange, trade uncertainty and trend changes [for example, sugar reduction].” (Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products) “Slowdown in business has us revising our 2020-21 capital spend.” (Petroleum and Coal Products) “The order book continues to shrink below our forecast levels. We’re unsure at this point how much of the slowdown is tied to certain events [like the General Motors strike], year-end inventory reductions by customers or a worsening economy. We don’t expect clarity on this until early 2020, when we expect to either see restocking orders [a good sign] or not [a bad sign].” (Fabricated Metal Products) “Demand has stabilized for the last half of [the fourth quarter], and production will be stable for the rest of this year.” (Machinery) “Heading into the holiday season, we are seeing the backlog decrease as new orders for 2020 seem lighter than in past years.” (Plastics and Rubber Products) “Markets have downshifted further. The continued confusion surrounding China trade has kept export markets on edge. Profits are elusive. Cash-flow planning is paramount. The general economy is slowing down.” (Wood Products) “Incoming orders and production have ticked back up. Tariffs are still a question.” (Furniture and Related Products)
