Mapping Out A New Image In this issue, we’ve launched a new Global Brush Locator Directory. The concept came after I attended the 2020 Mill-Rose Luncheon last January where I quickly learned that Cleveland serves as a center of brush activity in the Ohio area. That set me on a path to map out the brush making companies in the U.S. and beyond. After a massive research and verification process, our results certainly validated Ohio’s brush scene as the state ranks #1 in the U.S. with 17 brush companies. It was just as rewarding to find other pockets of manufacturers across the world and, not surprisingly, Germany tops the list as the #1 country outside of the U.S. with 40 brush manufacturers. The research and work around the project was both rewarding and enlightening, and we are pleased to present this concise list of more than 300 companies on page 28. Of note, one key criterion we utilized was that a company had to have an active and valid website. So, this is by no means a definitive list, and it’s clear there are many companies outside of this list. With that in mind, I offer Brushware as a resource for brush companies that want to establish a presence and increase business. Brushware is here to serve and promote the industry, and we can help validate your company and provide a web presence. Along those lines, I was struck by news items from Europe and the U.S. that speak to the same issue — the future of the brushware industry. From the FEIBP, the Paintbrush Working Group Report (page 14) notes urgent concern around attracting new and young talent to the industry. In fact, the group expressed a need to present the industry as it is — a modern, technology-driven sector with opportunities for workers with skills in the areas of engineering, marketing, design, finance, production, software and more. From the ABMA, they’ve launched the Emerging Leaders group targeted at people in the industry under the age of 45. The goals are discussed in Bob Lawrence’s ABMA Convention preview on page 22, but certainly, the idea is to ensure a transition to a solid future for the industry and in that way it matches up with the comments from the FEIBP group. At Brushware, we agree this is a critical period for brush manufacturing, and I want to extend our resources to project the brushware industry as a vibrant, modern and attractive segment for young workers. We believe in digital media and we push Brushware to achieve a full 360-degree presence with our digital edition, website, Brushware Digest enewsletter, online Brushware directory and a few more digital initiatives yet to be launched. But to be clear, a strong, modern print magazine is a key marker for any established or aspiring vertical, whether it be a hobby, sport, market or industry. We vow to continue to incrementally improve Brushware to stand above as an industry magazine that you can drop on anyone’s desk and say, “This is a strong, cutting-edge industry with a great future.” In that regard, I thank our advertisers and readers for their help in supporting that mission.

Deco Products Invests in Collaborative Robots Deco Products recently invested further in robots used in their zinc die cast manufacturing process with the addition of their first collaborative robot. Collaborative robots or cobots are used in the industry specifically in areas where people work. Collaborative robots are safe to work around humans because of their special sensors that recognize when it has made contact with a human or an object foreign to itself. Another safety adaptation of collaborative robots is the speed. Cobots, unlike industrial robots, are run at a speed that is slow and controlled.

Cages are not required for cobots.

An alternative to collaborative robots, Deco Products has industrial robots that are used in a large role as part of their zinc die cast manufacturing process. Industrial robots are secured in a cage, keeping them out of human way to prevent injuries. Industrial robots work by recognizing a part, grasping the part, trimming the part, properly discarding the scrap, and placing the manufactured part in the appropriate location. This allows production associates and machine operators to focus on the production of other parts, thus speeding up production.

Nate Zappola: 1946-2020 Brush industry manufacturers, suppliers, friends and family are mourning the loss of Nathan Thomas Zappola, Director of New Product Development for The Mill-Rose Company, who passed away on Dec. 30, 2020. He was 74 years old. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Nate was a graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and attended Kent State University as a pre-med student. He served in the U.S. National Guard, and enjoyed a lifetime romance with his wife, Cheryl, who he married in 1969. Zappola began working for The Mill-Rose Company over 20 years ago serving in sales and customer support, a role for which he was perfectly suited. “Nate was a master of cultivating relationships and a friend to everyone,” said Greg Miller, president of Mill-Rose. “He was a great friend of the Miller

family for more than 50 years and a lifelong friend to my father, who was born the same day, and in the same hospital as Nate,” he added. Zappola served as an ambassador for the brush industry and enjoyed coordinating industry events, including the Mill-Rose Brush Manufacturers annual luncheon and golf outings where industry representatives gather to network and mix business with pleasure. For a guy that was tough as nails, Nate took great pride in being a family man. Nate’s office at Mill-Rose served as a monument to his family with memorabilia and dozens of photos of his wife, children and grandchildren on every wall and desktop. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Cari (Matthew) Pal of Akron; son Nathan (Cynthia) Zappola of Tallmadge; grandchildren, Nate, Mia, Avery; and brother, John (Phyllis) Zappola of Aurora.


Tanis Incorporated Acquired By Private Investor On Dec. 23, 2020, Scott Tanis sold Tanis Incorporated to private investor Nick Mallinger. Tanin Incorporate was started by Scott and his late father, Chuck Tanis, 33 years ago and has grown during that time to include three manufacturing facilities and 121 employees. Tanis provides industrial and medical customers a complete line of brush configurations for surface conditioning, sealing, materials movement, cleaning and many other applications. Scott Tanis says, “Retiring and selling the company is bitter-sweet, but I know I am leaving the company in great hands. I am confident the Tanis name will continue to grow stronger under its new leadership and I’m excited to see what’s in store.” Nick Mallinger, a private investor, acquired Tanis Incorporated on Dec. 23, 2020, and is now the company’s president and CEO. Mallinger previously ran Metal-Era, a family business based in Waukesha, Wis., owned by the Mallinger family prior to its sale earlier in 2020. Mallinger stated, “I know I have huge shoes to fill with Scott no longer with the company, but I know over time I will do my best to keep the same family culture that has been in place since 1987. I am excited to continue the Tanis legacy by providing the industry with leading customer-centric service and quality products.”

IHA REPORTS ON 2020: As many consumers around the world were forced to – or chose to – shelter at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for home goods skyrocketed. In the U.S. alone, housewares sales jumped 22 percent in 2020 over 2019, according to The NPD Group. Small appliances increased 25 percent. That growth remained consistent through the holiday season (Oct. 3 – Dec. 26), according to NPD. Hillbrush Appoints Food Manufacturing Hygiene Expert

Mary Fitzgerald: 1960-2021

Hillbrush, the UK’s largest manufacturer of brushware and hygienic cleaning tools for the food industry, has appointed Mariane Hodgkinson, an expert in food safety and hygienic manufacturing design as a consultant.

Mary S. Fitzgerald, 60, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Wassaic, N.Y., lost her battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Jan. 27, 2021.

With almost 20 years of food industry experience, Hodgkinson will be working with Hillbrush to provide expert advice as it further expands its range of hygienic cleaning tools for food manufacturing settings. She will also provide insight and training on areas such as preparing for audits and cleaning best practices, which will be available to Hillbrush’s customers in due course.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1960, in Sharon, Conn. to Richard and Edna Mae (Kruger) Miller. She graduated from Webutuck Central School in Amenia, N.Y. She moved to Bradenton 32 years ago. She married Sidney W. Fitzgerald on May 20, 2000. Mary was the owner and president of Torrington Brush Works in Sarasota, Fla., and Torrington, Conn. Her interests included camping, going to concerts, playing the piano, volunteering at her children’s school and volunteering at animal shelters. She loved spending time with her family the most. Mary also enjoyed attending various churches.

Hodgkinson’s company, Twyning Consultancy supports food and drinks companies as well as service providers to the industry with food safety, hygiene and quality management knowledge. As well as being an experienced third-party auditor, her extensive experience includes working as a hygiene specialist at Campden BRI, where she provided clients with support on the hygienic design of equipment, plant and manufacturing operations. She is an active member of EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group), an organization that actively promotes safe food processing through hygienic design in all steps of the food manufacturing process. Hodgkinson has extensive experience in the beverage sector, having held the position of European supplier quality assurance coordinator for Anheuser-Busch Inbev as well many years in hygiene, food safety and quality assurance roles in the UK cider industry.

Many people in the brush industry loved and respected her for running Torrington Brush Works after her husband Sidney passed away nearly 12 years ago. She did an amazing job keeping the company going and building it even better and bigger. She had a very close relationship with all of the employees who considered her the best boss they ever had because she was so kind, loving, caring and thought of everyone else before herself. As long as she could provide them a stable job to support their family and provide a workplace, our employees looked forward to coming to work every day, and that made her happy. Going forward, Michael Grimaldi, his sister Stephanie Steury, and eventually their younger brother Josh will run the company.

ZAHORANSKY Acquires Dialysis Division of FLG Medizintechnik GmbH The ZAHORANSKY Group acquired the dialysis division of its long-standing partner FLG Automation AG on Jan. 1, 2021, taking a decisive step in consolidating its position in the field of medical technology. The complete lines for dialysis filter manufacturing from FLG perfectly complement the available know-how and existing portfolio of ZAHORANSKY concerning machines and installations for medical-technical products, as well as primary pharmaceutical packaging. With the acquisition, ZAHORANSKY offers the “one-stop shopping” experience its customers already know from brush production. The case of MGG, an Italian firm specialized in the production of machineries for the production of paintbrushes and rollers: increasing turnover, employees and investment in R&D: short supply chain and augmented reality for technical assistance and customer training.

A small company located just one hour off the city of Venezia, in the beautiful sorroundings of the Prosecco hills, Unesco heritage is the worldwide leader in the production of technologies for the paint brushes industry and is moving very fast towards complete digitalization. “In this year the process will be completed”, affirms Loris Maestrutti, CEO of MGG Srl which is at the forefront of machines and plants for the production of round and flat brushes and rollers used in sectors such as construction, restoration, DIY, woodworking and naval. A niche market with high technological quality. MGG’s case is really interesting. Started as a typical artisanal reality in 1989, it has always kept a low production but of supreme quality, with a completely in-house design and processing supply chain. In 2019, in order to increase the growth objectives without sacrificing the quality of the product and service, the founder and president Gianfranco Marcon decided to entrust the organizational and strategic transformation of the company to a top manager coming from the big industry. Thus Loris Maestrutti, with over thirty years of experience at Danieli and Camozzi, is now measuring itself with the culture and needs of a typical Italian SME. In the last four years MGG has doubled its turnover and increased its workforce by 60%. Since 2017 it has increased its annual R&D investment ratio by three and an half times. Sales are 30% in Europe, 10% in Asia, 20% in North America and 40% in South America. This year growth expectations are of at least 20% with already planned orders and others currently under negotiation thanks to the increase of the global market demand. To achieve even more ambitious results, an adequate production capacity is needed without sacrificing quality. A complete reorganization by objectives is therefore needed, accelerating the transformation of processes: full automation, advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, transversal application of IoT, unique data culture with digital management of internal and external flows on a cloud platform, market diversification through specialized product lines. “Full digitalization will take place through partnerships with companies specialized in the supply of robots and vision/quality control system, but also with sustainability in terms of worker safety”, explains Maestrutti. Marcon emphasizes the strategy of an internal processing chain and short supply chain of component suppliers to ensure fast and uninterrupted supply, “It has always been the business model that MGG followed from the inception of the company back in 1989” adds Marcon. MGG Paintbrush Innovation projects and produces for the brushes market, it stands for 70% of revenues. MGG Meccanica with 18 CNC machines of latest generation performs in-house machining, also offering contracting services. FEIBP Working Group: Paint Brushes January COVID-19 Update During the evening of Jan. 19, 2021, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the new regulations on the pandemic. Restrictions are on-going, with the lockdown in Germany being extended until Feb. 14, 2021. Experts from science, medicine and research had met in an advisory committee and finally, a result was communicated from the federal government. Chancellor Angela Merkel appeals to companies to let their employees back to the home office more. “It’s tough,” Merkel says, “What we have to expect people to do once again. But we have to take the situation into account. To protect people and also to protect the economy.”

FEIBP Paint Brushes Working Group On the morning of Jan. 19, 2021, the FEIBP Paint Brushes Working Group held its virtual meeting. A group of company representatives from European manufacturers and trading companies had accepted the invitation of General Manager Fons Ceelaert from the FEIBP European Brushware Federation and joined together digitally. Among the participants were Andrew McIlroy (D), Fons Geelaert (NL), Pierre Simler (F), Mark Samuel (UK), Charles Bentley (UK), Carlo Pogliani (I), Thorsten W. Stollberg (D), Eberhard Hörz (D), and Thomas Holland-Letz from the Fachverband Werkzeugindustrie (D). Ceelaert welcomed McIlroy with warm congratulations on becoming the new FEIBP president. The discussion then focused on the global problem of COVID-19 and its economic impact on the EU brush industry. The numbers of the pandemic are worrying in Europe and worldwide and the mutation of the virus is raising new concerns. Despite intensive hygiene and protection measures, and a hopefully soon stabilizing vaccination situation in all European countries, an easing of the situation is not yet in sight for Europe.

On the whole, there is a continuing, and in some cases relaxed, lockdown throughout Europe, and no reduction measures expected in the near future. Extensive travel restrictions and uncertain lead times continue to make general business planning and strategy a challenge. In the manufacturing sector, in particular, it is almost impossible to have employees work from home. Part-time work is only a limited possibility to adapt to the general situation. Across Europe, the economic environment is also extremely problematic, especially for retailers and service providers.

Industry Adapts But Shipping Costs Are Rising Companies in the industry in all countries are adapting to the political requirements with a high degree of flexibility in their product and personnel policies. Despite travel restrictions, close contacts are maintained with suppliers and customers and promised deliveries are kept. As an example, for raw materials from China, there are bottlenecks despite the willingness of the Chinese to deliver. Delivery times are stretching and shipping costs have skyrocketed in recent months. “A trip to China is impossible right now,” says Eberhard Hörz from DKSH. “Fortunately, we get all orders delivered; however, it is difficult to price with the current cost situation with enormously increasing sea freight costs and rising Chinese currency Renminbi YUAN.” Perlon’s McIlroy noted the fall in prices of raw materials in 2020, due to a lack of demand. Since the last quarter of 2020, prices have been on the rise again and are returning to preCOVID levels. Related to shipping, he says, “The cost of container shipments is higher than ever in all countries.” And to compound the issue, there is delayed onward transport of the goods by freight train or truck, for example from Rotterdam to the buyers. Due to the current state of the pandemic, Mark Samuel regretfully reported that a significant price increase for fine hair is to be expected and he fears increasingly scarce availability.


In the meantime, the Brexit agreement has been concluded. Samuel spoke about the impact of the agreements between England and the EU. He hopes that the situation will stabilize in a short time. “There is confidence on all sides,” Fons Ceelaert emphasized, “that the new import and export regulations will hopefully continue to allow the smoothest and most duty-free exchange of goods between European countries and England.”

Securing Young Talent One issue that was close to the hearts of the virtual meeting participants is securing young talent. “There is hardly any new blood in our industry,” says Thorsten Stollberg (Wistoba). It’s the same in France, says Pierre Simler (president of FFB, the French association), and also in Italy, added Carlo Pogliani (Linea Stradal). “We are all looking for young people to work for us, but it’s a pity,” said Stollberg, “Interest in the brush and paintbrush

industry is low, and no one obviously knows how innovative our industry really is.“ Training at the Bechhofen Master School is professional and offers the opportunity for young people to learn the basics of this traditional industry and earn the title of master craftsman. The industry has now developed from the original craft into a high-tech business and that fact should be communicated even more strongly to young people. The brush and paintbrush industry operates throughout Europe with a high level of expertise in materials science, mechanical engineering, engineering and design. And there is a great willingness to invest, especially in the development of future-oriented manufacturing methods and technologies. Meeting participants looked to go beyond traditional training and strive to make the next generation curious about the industry, noting that outside of the COVID-19 pandemic the issue is the number challenge for the sector.

Summary of the EU-UK Brexit Agreement A Free Trade Agreement: a new economic and social partnership with the United Kingdom

• The agreement covers not just trade in goods and services, but also a broad range of other areas in the EU’s interest, such as investment, competition, state aid, tax transparency, air and road transport, energy and sustainability, fisheries, data protection and social security coordination. • It provides for zero tariffs and zero quotas on all goods that comply with the appropriate rules of origin. • Both parties have committed to ensuring a robust level playing field by maintaining high levels of protection in areas such as environmental protection, the fight against climate change and carbon pricing, social and labor rights, tax transparency and state aid, with effective, domestic enforcement, a binding dispute settlement mechanism and the possibility for both parties to take remedial measures. • The EU and the UK agreed on a new framework for the joint management of fish stocks in EU and UK waters. The UK will be able to further develop British fishing activities, while the activities and livelihoods of European fishing communities will be safeguarded, and natural resources preserved. • On transport, the agreement provides for continued and sustainable air, road, rail and maritime connectivity, though market access falls below what the Single Market offers. It includes provisions to ensure that competition between EU and UK operators takes place on a level playing field, so that passenger rights, workers’ rights and transport safety are not undermined. • On energy, the agreement provides a new model for trading and interconnectivity, with guarantees for open and fair competition, including on safety standards for offshore, and production of renewable energy. • On social security coordination, the agreement aims at ensuring a number of rights of EU citizens and UK nationals. This concerns EU citizens working in, traveling or moving to the UK and to UK nationals working in, traveling or moving to the EU after Jan. 1, 2021.

• Finally, the agreement enables the UK’s continued participation in a number of flagship EU programs for the period 2021-2027 (subject to a financial contribution by the UK to the EU budget), such as Horizon Europe.

A new partnership for our citizens’ security

• The Trade and Cooperation Agreement establishes a new framework for law enforcement and judicial cooperation in criminal and civil law matters. It recognizes the need for strong cooperation between national police and judicial authorities, in particular for fighting and prosecuting cross-border crime and terrorism. It builds new operational capabilities, taking account of the fact that the UK, as a non-EU member outside of the Schengen area, will not have the same facilities as before. The security cooperation can be suspended in case of violations by the UK of its commitment for continued adherence to the European Convention of Human Rights and its domestic enforcement.

A horizontal agreement on Governance: A framework that stands the test of time

• To give maximum legal certainty to businesses, consumers and citizens, a dedicated chapter on governance provides clarity on how the agreement will be operated and controlled. It also establishes a Joint Partnership Council, who will make sure the Agreement is properly applied and interpreted, and in which all arising issues will be discussed. • Binding enforcement and dispute settlement mechanisms will ensure that the rights of businesses, consumers and individuals are respected. This means that businesses in the EU and the UK compete on a level playing field and will avoid either party using its regulatory autonomy to grant unfair subsidies or distort competition. • Both parties can engage in cross-sector retaliation in case of violations of the agreement. This cross-sector retaliation applies to all areas of the economic partnership.

Modern ERP Launchpad for Growth By Lisa Anderson

If you don’t have a modern enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, your growth prospects will be limited in comparison to your competition. It didn’t use to be as important; however, according to KPMG, for the majority of US CEOs, the pandemic has meant an acceleration of digital transformation by months or even years. Although there are several technologies considered a priority, modernizing and upgrading ERP is a cornerstone launchpad for growth. Clients and colleagues are seeing the critical importance of not only having a central database for performing business transactions but also one that enables a superior customer experience. ERP systems provide a solid infrastructure that will support scalable, profitable growth. Taking orders, deciding what to purchase, planning what to produce, tracking operational progress, storing inventory, shipping orders, invoicing the customer and tracking costs should be commonplace in ERP. These systems should also allow for the automation and integration of business processes that support business growth and profitability. Modern ERP platforms typically support the vast majority of business processes and allow for reporting and analysis of these business processes and transactions whereas legacy ERP systems frequently stop short at supporting the full needs of businesses in today’s business environment. As an example, a mid-market manufacturer recently had to upgrade because their system didn’t support credit cards or inter-facility transfers. Although upgrading was a significant undertaking, they gained not only these foundational requirements, but they also were able to better track and manage inventory, understand costs and analyze margins after upgrading their ERP system. After ironing out go-live issues, they had an upgraded base and could expand with CRM (customer relationship management) capabilities as well as B2B/B2C and e-commerce functionality so that they could grow the business successfully. In another case, a manufacturer had a highly customized ERP system that supported their current needs expertly; however, it didn’t support scalable growth. It was also highly dependent on programmers with specialized knowledge. This risk became

evident when their top programmer tragically died in an accident. Although they were able to make it beyond that situation, they knew they had to upgrade their infrastructure to support their aggressive growth goals. Since the executives wanted to minimize risk, they started with accounting to strengthen their base, expanded with reporting/business intelligence to gain insights for growing the business and then upgraded the base. By taking this approach, they also gained insights into data issues to address up front to ensure success down-the-line. After upgrading to a modern ERP base, they planned to accelerate success by further automating operations to gain efficiencies and customer responsiveness. Modern ERP offers advantages beyond providing a solid infrastructure for growth. These types of systems have advanced reporting and dashboard capabilities built into the system. Some offer an artificial intelligence component with predictive analytics as well; however, simply having the ability to slice and dice data to make decisions can support profitable growth. These systems also have extensions for IoT applications such as predictive maintenance, customer portals, e-commerce, automation and robotics. And by nature, modern ERP platforms must sustain significant investment into future technologies so that their software stays ahead of the changing needs of business. Although it might be tempting to jump to the latest exciting technology and skip the ERP upgrade, don’t be tempted by shiny objects. It is akin to focusing on window dressings when the walls are not yet in place. The most successful executives have a scalable infrastructure that supports the execution of their strategy. Start by making sure you have a modern ERP system that will support your business objectives. Make the Most Out of the ABMA Online Convention By Meg Cooper There is immense value in face-to-face networking and connecting on a personal level is something I’m sure we’re all looking forward to doing in the near future. Just because the good old days of networking aren’t available to us safely at the moment, however, doesn’t mean we can’t make the most out of an online situation. Making this year’s ABMA convention online allows for more members of the industry to attend, so take advantage of the technology and accessibility available to you by signing up for the face-to-face Zoom meetings, attending the events and using the breakout rooms to connect with other members. You can make the most out of this unique trade show and event by setting yourself up for virtual success. Here is your before, during and after plan.

Before:

• Check your usernames. Do you have your Zoom information filled out properly? Is your first and last name spelled correctly? • Make sure everything is downloaded and installed properly. Do you have the latest Zoom update? • Check your lighting and background. Can the other people see you clearly or will there be light coming from behind causing a shadow? Do you have a distracting background or have you picked out an image to go behind you on Zoom? • Check your headphones/microphones and make sure everything is synced up. Will you be using headphones or will you be in a room that’s quiet enough you can use your computer microphone? Will there be background noise that might affect the sound level? Do you need a sound machine to drown out any unnecessary noise coming from outside? • Grab notepads and pens, marketing material, catalogs, products, etc. Set up a mini-booth station ahead so you’re ready with all the information you need and not jumping up and leaving your screen in the middle of a conversation. • What will you be wearing? Sure, sweatpants and comfy clothes are great but treat these virtual trade shows and events as you would an in-person one: dress for success — even from the waist down as interruptions do happen and you may have to get up and leave the room. • Prioritize your time. Schedule yourself throughout the event as you would during an in-person trade show or event. Make sure your calendar is blocked out for the appropriate amount of time and that you aren’t overbooking yourself.

During:

• Turn on your camera and get personal. Don’t leave a blank screen on during large meetings or social events. • Don’t multitask. It’s easy to get lost in the noise during an online trade show, but if you treat this like any in-person networking or educational session you would attend, you’ll find that you will get more out of the entire experience. • Stay engaged by asking questions and get involved in the chat room. Incorporating a multi-level approach to your learning and experience will help you make connections faster. • Live tweeting the event is a great way to reach out and “meet” more people during an online trade show/event and keep up those connections long after the event has finished. • Take notes and write down names/businesses/ideas that you’d like to look into further. • Make sure you’ve built in some time for breaks, snacks and stretching if you needed. Zoom fatigue can happen to anyone after a year of online-only events. • Have a plan for technical glitches. Make sure your contact information is updated and have a back-up means of communication to make the most out of a bad situation.

After:

• Don’t stop your networking at the event, keep things going via social media. Connect with businesses and other industry members through LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. • Follow up using the notes and tweets you wrote during the event to reconnect with other members or businesses. Look up products and follow through with your face-toface meetings—just like you would after other conventions, utilizing the connections you made will increase your success.

Last May, virtual-platform company 6Connex reported a 1000 percent increase in virtual events related to the outbreak of COVID-19 and that trend has only been going up in the last year. From an economic, public health and sustainable standpoint, online events are going to be around for quite a while. Understandably, nothing can replace the value that networking face-to-face can have; however, you can still make the most out of online trade shows/events with a good plan. With the COVID-19 pandemic making it obvious that the usual mass gathering of ABMA members at this year’s convention could not happen, the association’s board of directors decided to “Pivot,” which is the theme for the 2021 event. As to what that means, ABMA President Scott Enchelmaier explains:

“We have all had to pivot professionally and personally as a result of COVID-19. This is also true of our association and how we choose to interact with each other. Our choices were to meet in person, cancel or pivot to another format. Since meeting in person or canceling the convention was not an option, pivoting to a virtual event is the theme.”


The decision to go virtual, according to Enchelmaier, was based on feedback the board of directors received from the membership through ABMA’s monthly COVID-19 surveys and Zoom calls. “The general consensus was against having an inperson convention. Given that, as well as the travel restrictions in place and the guidelines for group meetings, the board voted unanimously on November 6, 2020, to have a virtual convention.”

Originally scheduled to be held at San Diego’s Hotel Del Coronado Resort and Spa, the upcoming meeting will be the least expensive to attend in modern times R given that members won’t have to fly, PAR drive or rent rooms. There will be no ID guest speaker, fine dining, in-person receptions and no Suppliers’ display or Suppliers’ Reception. However, the virtual program formulated by Executive Director David Parr features many of the same elements as an actual convention. With a $100 per person registration fee, this will be a unique opportunity for member-company employees to participate because they “can have as many members of their team attend committee meetings, the general session and most importantly, the face-to-face suppliers display,” Enchelmaier says. “Companies all have to make choices in selecting staff to attend an in-person convention as a result of cost. This is not the case with a virtual event.”

FACE 2 FACE SUPPLIERS’ MEETINGS Although this year’s confabs between suppliers and their customers and potential customers will be screen to screen, they’ll still be much like they were last year, only virtual. In mid-February, the association will ask manufacturers and suppliers to request Face 2 Face meetings with each other. Once they’ve made the requests, all participants will receive a meeting schedule. After that, supplier members will be responsible for scheduling their meetings according to the schedule. This year, meeting time is being expanded to 20 minutes with 10-minute breaks in between. There will be five hours of meetings on March 18, and an additional two hours the following day, which Parr says “will open a whole new level of participation as companies can greatly increase the talent pool at the table, providing a significant increase in knowledge sharing.” Supplier members are required to schedule their meeting on their own virtual meeting technology so they can control their IT and bandwidth needs, according to Parr, adding that “We strongly recommend registering early, especially since we need some advance time to schedule Face 2 Face meetings.” He says waiting too long “could mean the times, or the organizations you want to meet with will be booked.”

EMERGING LEADERS

Parr adds that “the challenge was providing value at an affordable cost. Since the pandemic, segments of our membership have had their businesses hit hard. The board is very sensitive to the pulse of the membership and we set about providing a worthwhile experience at little cost. In addition, since there is not an in-person event this year the board waived collecting the suppliers assessment for 2021, saving our supplier members a significant percentage on 2021 dues. Our committee meetings will be held in the weeks leading up to the convention and we will report on their work at the general session on March 17.”

ABMA has added a new component to the association that Enchelmaier says resulted from “marching orders we received from our membership during the Vision 2000 exercise at last year’s convention.” It’s called Emerging Leaders, which he says is a way to “engage, inspire and facilitate cooperation between younger members of our organization. It’s vital to the health and welfare of the brush industry and is a vehicle to help facilitate interaction between younger members.” By “younger” he means anyone 45 years old and under who are actively engaged within the brush, broom, roller, mop and paint industry.

As for the value of members and prospective members attending the virtual convention, Parr says, “The pandemic has actually heightened the need for members of our association to band together to exchange ideas, best practices and relevant information that is useful to large and small companies. It is

January along with Borghi USA’s Director of Marketing, Miguel Medrano, vice president, and Secretary/Treasurer Thomas Cottam, a manufacturing engineer at Industrial Brush Corp. in Lakeland, Fla. During subsequent meetings, a mission statement, by-laws, etc. were developed, according to White who says the purpose of their meeting at the convention will be “to get the word out and recruit. The people who have participated in the meetings to this point have had great ideas about what this team can achieve but it’s important that we have the people to make it happen.” Prior to the publication of this issue of Brushware, there were already 15 members, a number which White expects to double after the convention and continue to grow from there. He says, “Anyone within a company can be a part of our group and benefit from it, not just those who attend conventions.” To recruit even more members, White believes they’ll “have to work pretty hard to bring people in since the group is still taking shape, but we plan on doing some lighthearted social events and some merchandise giveaways. As for why he joined, White says he was “excited about the prospect of being part of a group representing the future of the ABMA.” Regarding the origin of the new component, he says that his takeaway from last year’s Vision 2020 focus began with a question — “What can ABMA start doing for our companies that it isn’t already doing?” From there, he says, “People began asking can ABMA survive long term in its current format? I believe a lot of wise people came to the conclusion that it couldn’t. Emerging Leaders was identified as a solution.” Being one of the younger members, White was then asked to be on a team to develop the group with a clear goal — find a way to bring the benefits of ABMA to a more age-diverse audience with a priority on accessibility. White expresses excitement about what this new component can become, believing that it has the potential to “be a strong development tool for its members through the use of social events, workshops, and member presentations.”

While the Emerging Leaders, committee meetings, and the General Session will be on a Zoom platform, the Paul Miller Welcome Reception will be on a platform used by ABMA’s third party provider, according to Parr. As noted, the Face 2 Face meetings will be on a virtual meeting platform chosen by the suppliers. In the days ahead, Parr will send out meeting specific connection information. FOR INNOVATION During the general session, Public Relations Chair R.J. Lindstrom will present the annual ABMA William A. Cordes Innovation Excellence Award given in recognizing outstanding innovation in manufactured products, components or services in the brush industry. Candidates for this year’s award will be announced in early February, and voting will be online using Survey Monkey.

ENCHELMAIER ON HIS PRESIDENCY With ABMA’s officers rotating upward in the leadership at the upcoming convention, Enchelmaier takes on the mantle of past president and will remain on the board for the next two years. In reflecting on the experience, he says, “Serving as president the first year was much what I expected: presiding over board meetings, running general sessions at the convention and attending the FEIBP Congress in Switzerland as ABMA’s representative. The second-year during the pandemic was something entirely different and much less glamorous. Our member companies came under enormous stress having to face COVID-related issues like the Cares Act, essential business status, PPP Loan applications, PPP Loan forgiveness, and most importantly, maintaining workforce health and safety in a pandemic. On the professional level, working with David Parr in cooperation with members of our board to shift our focus to assist member companies to work through these issues was extremely rewarding. On a personal level, being ABMA president has given me the opportunity to work with some extremely talented people at home and around the globe. I am blessed that I can call them colleagues and lifelong friends.”

ASSUMING THE MANTLE After serving as the association’s vice president, Greg Miller of the Mill-Rose Company will move into the presidency during this year’s convention. Asked for his thoughts on the matter, Miller had these comments: “Being an ABMA member and serving on committees and the board over the years has

been very rewarding. Along the way, I’ve learned a lot about our great industry and have forged manyvalued working and social relationships. It will be a distinct honor to now serve as president. The brush industry has played a significant role

REACTION TO HAVING A VIRTUAL CONVENTION

To the person, all accepted the fact that having an inperson convention wasn’t possible, but they’ll miss actually being there. As PMM’s Enrique Mejia puts it, “We are sad not to be able to see all of our good friends in the industry in person, on the other hand, we like that we will have the chance to say hello, at least from a screen and a speaker.” He adds that “it will be impossible S E L to reproduce the networking TE A environment online, I however, it would have been worse to cancel any event to substitute the convention.” “It’s a big loss for everybody not to have an in-person convention.

You cannot replace the personal contact and networking with a virtual event,” says Sofia Teles of Filkemp. Dave Magner of Deco says, “In-person would be better, but I fully understand this year’s limitations.”

“There is no comparing meeting in-person as we know that it is absolutely the best way to communicate, share ideas, and participate in a friendly, engaging and fun environment with one another,” Medrano says. “However, that does not mean that a virtual convention is irrelevant and does not allow us to meet the needs of all members. ER As we have learned this past year, AGN M connecting virtually does a lot E of good for situations and circumstances that do not allow us to meet in person. As technology continues to improve and become a norm in how we do business day-to-day, we can include more personnel in virtual meetings without the expense of lost time and travel.” Medrano does believe the value will be different, “but the value is still there nonetheless. As with anything, if you bring a positive attitude and are open to new ways of doing things, you will have a positive outcome. A virtual convention has its benefits such as reducing costs and participating from the comfort level of your home or office.”

With this year’s annual meeting being the first of its kind for the association, Brushware sought out and received the following comments from members who always attend the annual meetings: “Borghi USA will be participating because we believe it is a great opportunity to continue to connect with the members, catch-up with news and updates as well as continue our tradition to meet for the benefit and growth of our company and the association,” Miguel Medrano says. “Because it’s online, which only takes a click of a button to connect, (it) gives us the opportunity to have more Borghi USA team members attend. It allows us to share the ABMA with new first-time attendees and to possibly include them in future conventions. This is thanks to the virtual convention being broken up into different days and only being a few hours per day.”

“The virtual convention I hope will never take the place of our in-person conventions,” says Kristin Draper, Draper Knitting. “I feel that the human aspect of ABMA is so www.brushwaremag.com | 25


important in our industry because there are always the chance meetings that can happen around the pool, over lunch or golfing.” Even so, she says meeting online is better than not meeting at all, and it’s a “great way to stay in touch without traveling. We’ll still have a social hour and “speed dating” meetings that should have good value too.” She adds that it will also be an opportunity for “more people to attend online.” Could this convention be a future trend for the association? “Potentially, it could be,” Medrano says. “In the appropriate time and setting this could be the way to go. However, nothing beats a face-to-face convention.”

Even a short conversation with great senior names in our industry, most of them founders of their companies, provides some knowledgeable/ enlightened moments worth a trip for any of us.” He adds that once he knows the details, “we will enroll some of our most talented young employees. Also, we will be happy to participate as mentors.”

Italy and India Show Manufacturing Growth in January Supply Chain Issues and Labor Shortages Present Challenges

Manufacturing in India showed strength in January with a reported 57.7 PMI from Markit Economics, which represented a fourth straight month of improvement. Italy had a second straight month of growth and a big uptick to a reported PMI of 55.1 percent after registering 52.8 in December. That represents Italy’s highest level since February 2018. UNITED STATES: ISM® reported a US manufacturing PMI of 58.7 percent, down 1.8 percentage points from the December reading of 60.5 percent, which was the highest mark since August 2018. “Manufacturing performed well for the eighth straight month, with demand, consumption and inputs registering strong growth compared to December. Labor market difficulties at panelists’ companies and their suppliers will continue to restrict the manufacturing economy expansion until the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis abates,” says Timothy R. Fiore, ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee Chair. INDIA: IHS Markit reported a three-month high of 57.7 percent for manufacturers in India. The number was also the second-highest for India after the decade-high of 58.9 from

October of 2020. Employment continued to fall, but input cost inflation increased to a 28-month high. Confidence in business outlook improved based on the ongoing vaccine rollout and increased marketing budgets. IHS Markit/BME reported a Germany manufacturing PMI of 57.1 percent in January, which was down slightly from 58.3 in December. German manufacturing, however, continues to show growth as the figure remained above 55 percent for the fifth straight month thanks to continuing gains in both output and new orders. Factory job losses slowed but supply chain bottlenecks due to shortages of materials and shipping containers caused a spike in expenses. Optimism was at a record-high for January.

GERMANY:

ITALY: Italian manufacturers rose from 52.8 percent in

December to reach a PMI figure of 55.8 percent according to IHS Markit. From a chartist viewpoint, the new reading made the November and December figures look like aberrations. Despite the strong performance, disruptions to supply chains intensified and lead times increased causing the rate of input price inflation to approach a four-year high.

economic DASHBOARD EUROZONE: The Euro Area expanded for a seventh straight

month at a strong pace to register a 54.8 percent PMI for January. That was off the December reading of 55.2 as the improvement in operating conditions was minimal due to a drop in new orders. However, expansion continued for the intermediate and investment goods sectors. The Netherlands and Germany showed the strongest manufacturing growth based on strong export bases.

UNITED KINGDOM: UK manufacturers saw a sharp dropoff

in January with a reported IHS Markit/CIPS manufacturing PMI of 54.1 percent — down 3.4 points from the December reading of 57.5. The UK manufacturing sector slowed as new orders fell slightly due to weaker inflows of new export work and supply-chain issues related to both Brexit-induced transport delays and COVID-19 restrictions. On the upside, UK manufacturing employment rose for the first time in a year.

CHINA: The strong surge for Chinese manufacturers that ran

through November 2020 all of the sudden seems distant as the Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI registered a seven-month low of 51.5 percent in January. That followed a December number of 53.0 that was well short of the November high of 54.8 percent. Buying levels were weak and employment fell after stabilizing in December, while backlogs of work reached their lowest level in eight months. Additionally, Chinese business outlook sentiment reached an eight-month low.

ISM® REPORT COMMENTS “Business is very good. Customer inventories are low, with a significant order backlog through April. Supply base is struggling to keep up with demand, disrupting our production here and there. Raw material lead times have been extended. COVID-19 continues to cause challenges throughout the supply chain. Huge logistics challenges, especially in getting product through ports and in getting containers. We are seeing significant cost increases in logistics and raw materials.” Machinery “Business remains strong. Manufacturing running at full capacity.” Chemical Products “Very strong demand with limitations in supply to meet increased demand.” Transportation Equipment “Labor continues to be one of our largest challenges.” Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products

“Our current business demand is going way past preCOVID-19 [levels].” Fabricated Metal Products “January 2021 started with strong orders for plastic components in auto, electrical and other sectors. The industry outlook is optimistic. Looking at investing in new equipment for anticipated demand later this year. Reshoring is taking hold, with new customer potential.” Plastics and Rubber Products “We have had an increase in employees testing positive for COVID-19, negatively impacting manufacturing.” Miscellaneous Manufacturing “Supplier factory capacity is well utilized. Increased demand, labor constraints and upstream supply delays are pushing lead times. This is more prevalent with international than U.S.based suppliers.” Computer and Electronic Products “2020 growth at 5 percent during a very challenging and volatile year. 2021 is expected to bring growth at a 7-percent or even greater pace.
