REPORT ON GIVING
Hadley Hubbard Feiss ‘82, P’12, ’15 2019–2020 Chair of the Board
Dear Bryn Mawr Community, Thank you so very much for your generous support of The Bryn Mawr School detailed in the following pages. The year 2020 will forever be marked by the challenges we faced as a world and as a school community. Who could imagine that a year that began with the theme “Come, Let Us Gather!” would end with remote learning and a physically distanced graduation? Through it all, our community stayed true to its mission by showing resilience in the face of complexity, ambiguity and change. We are filled with deep appreciation for the leadership and commitment of our faculty and staff, the initiative and passion of our students and the dedication and engagement of our families. The Bryn Mawr experience that we know and value—meaningful student and faculty connections, inspiring learning opportunities and a joyous and supportive community—has remained strong, even when life as we know it was disrupted. In 2019–2020, alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends contributed more than $3.1 million to Bryn Mawr. This includes new gifts to our endowment for financial aid, support for our teachers and capital gifts that helped us build the Student Center, which opened last fall. A total of 1,357 donors gave nearly $1.5 million in unrestricted gifts to The Fund for Bryn Mawr, which provides vital and immediate support for the school’s annual operating needs. It is this extraordinary generosity that allows Bryn Mawr to continue to provide an unparalleled educational experience for young women. Thank you to the many alumnae and parents who gave generously of their time mentoring students, serving as class reunion representatives, volunteering for the Parents’ Association and Alumnae Association, and being involved in the classrooms, on the sidelines and backstage. We value your partnership. Finally, we express our gratitude to each and every donor listed on the following pages. When you make a gift, you demonstrate your commitment to Bryn Mawr and the people and programs that make this place and this community so special. Thank you for all of the good you do for Bryn Mawr through your unwavering support.

A Legacy of Leadership in Action
Norma “Simmie” Simmons, Teacher 1951–1982
Longtime faculty member and honorary alumna Norma “Simmie” Simmons, who passed away on November 17, 2018, left a generous six-figure gift to Bryn Mawr to help the school establish the Norma Simmons Scholarship Fund, which will challenge, prepare and inspire young women to lead and change the world.
Headmistress Stambaugh says that teaching and coaching were in Simmons’ blood. “She was just born to teach, and she had a great role model in her dad who was also a physical education teacher. She got her start in sports at the YMCA, where she led summer athletic programs. For Simmie, winning was great but leadership and sportsmanship were consummate. I never heard her swear. She didn’t yell at her athletes—she applauded their efforts. Her field hockey players to this day remember her advice, ‘boobs over the ball,’ which put her players in the proper position.”
Bessie Cromwell Speers ‘82, head of the Tower Hill School in Delaware, played field hockey when Simmons Simmons worked at Bryn Mawr from coached the team, and recalls how 1951 to 1982 as a physical education Simmons was passionate about everySimmie enjoying a beautiful Maine day. teacher, athletics director and coach, thing to do with students, athletes and directed Gym Drill for 30 years. and the Bryn Mawr community. “I remember her small, fit frame, Described by colleagues, students and friends as always impecalways sporting a well-pressed light BMS yellow pleated field cably dressed, no-nonsense, kind, warm with a wicked sense of hockey kilt. Bryn Mawr is grateful for the support of members of our community who believe deeply in the school’s mission and include Bryn Mawr in their financial and estate planning. After Simmons retired, she moved to Lincolnville, Maine. Speers and Stambaugh both kept in touch with Simmons until the time of her death, and visited her at her home in Maine. They both recall that she was just as fit into her eighties as she was as a young coach at Bryn Mawr. Headmistress Stambaugh recalls visits filled with lobster rolls, onion rings and lots of laughter. “She loved it when people from those early days and Bryn Mawr alumnae visited her. I am glad she did, since once my visits started, they continued annually for over 35 years!”
Simmons loved Bryn Mawr and Gym Drill. Headmistress Stambaugh says Simmons enjoyed increasing the complexity of the dances with each grade level, never tiring of teaching her students the importance of being fit and strong. Her final year leading Gym Drill before her retirement was Simmons’ gift to her crowning achievement. Bryn Mawr classes from 1915 to 1984 participated Bryn Mawr is just in the Banner March. Some three hundred participants followed Simmons’ another example of her choreography in the alumnae dance and dedication to the school approximately eight hundred students from Little School through Upper School and her giving nature. took part. Speers says that she will always remember the way Simmons was devoted to her students and players, and how she had a way of making people feel welcome with her generous spirit. Her gift to Bryn Mawr is just another example of her dedication to the school and her giving nature. Headmistress Stambaugh echoed Speers saying, “It was not a surprise that Simmie gave a generous gift to Bryn Mawr at her death at age 90. Bryn Mawr gets under your skin. She was able to give because she lived simply. When her sneakers got old, she didn’t throw them out. She washed and bleached them. It was quite a sight to see eight to ten pairs of sparkling white Keds hanging from the line in the sun. That’s just who she was.”
Speers says Simmons would be thrilled that her gift and legacy continue to impact Bryn Mawr students and to support and encourage them as she did for so many years during her time at Bryn Mawr. “She cared about leadership, school spirit and making sure girls stood tall with pride. From Gym Drill dances, P.E. and varsity sports, Ms. Simmons was a legend at Bryn Mawr and we are all better for having known her.”
Her student and mentee Gilly Obrecht Babb ’79 best summarized what it was like to know and play for Simmons. “Despite not being an athletic star, she made me feel like one, every single day. If I had a concern, it was her advice that I would seek. Ms. Simmons would welcome students into her office, encourage them to have a seat and join the conversation that was occurring among the athletic staff. I immediately felt that my opinions mattered. The closeness we experienced as teammates, our elaborate post-game teas and team dinners added to the sense of pride that I felt playing for Ms. Simmons. Her warmth, dedication and ability to find humor in so many different ways were just a few of her many special qualities. I might not have been one of her stars, but she certainly was one of mine.” 2019–2020

A Bryn Mawr Family Tradition Elizabeth “Libby” McKenrick Winstead ’56 For the Winstead family, supporting Bryn Mawr is a tradition. Elizabeth “Libby” McKenrick Winstead ‘56 was devoted to the school. Years after graduation, Libby served on the Board of Trustees, made countless phone calls on behalf of The Fund for Bryn Mawr and wrote class notes for the alumnae magazine. In 1985, Libby created The Elizabeth McKenrick Redwood and Elizabeth McKenrick Winstead Scholarship, a fund to help Bryn Mawr students with incidental items such as sporting equipment, class rings and trips. The fund was initially named for Libby’s mother, who worked in the school library, and it now includes Libby’s name as well. After Libby passed away in 2012, her son, Ted Winstead, continued the family tradition. Ted and his wife, Ann-Barron Carneal, moved to Baltimore and enrolled their daughter, Maggie Winstead ’22, at Bryn Mawr. Inspired by Libby’s service to the school, Ted and Ann-Barron have followed in her footsteps. Ted volunteers for The Fund for Bryn Mawr and is a member of the Board of Trustees, serving on the Development and the Community and Inclusion Committees. Ann-Barron is teaching fifth grade this year after holding long-term substitute positions in the Lower and Middle Schools. Ted said his family supports Bryn Mawr because they believe in the school’s mission and the power of its community. “We know that tuition does not cover the full cost of educating each girl, and we are grateful for what the school has done for our family and for other families,” said Ted. “As the school’s response to the pandemic has illustrated, Bryn Mawr teachers and coaches are devoted to the students—and the students are devoted to one another. During quarantine, a senior showed up at our house with a package of Oreos for Maggie and a note of encouragement before her AP history exam. There is only one Mawrtian Nation!”

Although the phrase “Mawrtian Nation” was not around when Libby and her sisters, Ann McKenrick Turnbull ‘59 and Alice McKenrick Horst ‘60, attended Bryn Mawr, Ted says Libby understood the meaning of those words. “My mother treasured her friendships with classmates. She was in touch with many regularly, and helped to organize reunions,” Ted said. “She even wrote letters to classmates who had lost contact with Bryn Mawr, trying to reconnect them with the school.” Mary DeKuyper ’56, a classmate who later served on the Board of Trustees with Libby, echoed Ted, saying, “Libby was the glue that kept our class connected. She was also a strong financial donor and was willing to ask others to give. She never forgot that she had benefited from donors who made it possible for her to receive financial aid.” Libby created the scholarship fund, Ted explained, because she did not want girls “to feel left out” or to avoid participating in certain activities at Bryn Mawr due to the costs. “As a student, she knew that feeling,” Ted said. “She did not attend her senior prom because she did not have the money to pay for the costs of the party afterward. She wanted every girl to be able to have the

Gym Drill, which brings together generations of Bryn Mawr students and alumnae, is Maggie’s favorite school tradition. “In 2019, Maggie marched with her great aunt Ann Turnbull, which was very special,” said Ted. “My mother enjoyed Gym Drill so much that she kept a CD of the opening march in her car.”
Ted says the music is a reminder of the tradition of excellence and diversity at Bryn Mawr that his family is proud to support. “The school helps young women to become leaders, citizens and, just as important, lifelong learners,” Ted added. “As an alumna, my mother supported the school’s early efforts to build a more inclusive community. As that important work continues today, it’s clear that the diversity of students and alumnae is one of the school’s greatest strengths. We appreciate what the school and alumnae are doing to bring the community together and raise up voices that have not yet been heard.”

Class (of 1995) Act The bond Bryn Mawr girls have with each other is deeper than friendship—it’s sisterhood. Even years after graduation, alumnae say the connections made during their time as students shape their life experiences and always bring them back to Bryn Mawr. The Class of 1995 is a shining example. Known for their competitive spirit, joyful nature, bold voices and for being one of the most enthusiastically engaged alumnae classes, the Class of ’95 always goes above and beyond for Bryn Mawr. alumnae events, served on the Board of Trustees, hosted students for senior projects and served as mentors. Six members of the Class of 1995 also have daughters who are now Bryn Mawr students. Wright is one of them, and says it is a reflection of the wonderful experience their class had, and exemplifies their confidence in the school to deliver the same to their children. “As a Bryn Mawr parent, I have a lot at stake. Much of my connection and continued work is for my daughter, Ava, but also for all the girls like her, especially Black girls in whom I see myself. The Class of ’27 is undoubtedly the next ‘95, and we want them to have the best possible experience. There’s tremendous untapped power in alums connecting with current students.” While Hebron is not a Bryn Mawr parent herself, she is an “auntie” to Wright’s daughter Ava ’27, and says she gives back to the school to pay it forward. “I want to help the school continue to create the wonderful experience I had for someone else. We want other young girls, especially our Black girls, to see the value in going to a school like this, and to see what it has done for us.”
…members of the Class of ’95 remain very involved with the school, and interested in connecting with current students. Wright says she believes it is important to model for the next generation of alumnae the benefits of remaining connected and engaged with their alma mater. “Last year I found myself in Chicago. I literally just checked the alumnae app to see who in my class might be around for lunch, and Lauren Rosen ‘95 and I caught up (Hey Lauren!). It was lovely, and she ended up on our reunion committee. When I was living in Italy, I spent a weekend with Brooke Donaldson Di Lauro ‘95 in Paris where she was teaching a study abroad course. Fantastique! I have more friendships in my class and outside my class than I had as a student. We’re no longer bound by cliques, clichés or assumptions about one another.” Hebron echoed Wright, saying that she wants every class to stay connected to Bryn Mawr and to each other to help build the best future for the next generation. “I loved my Bryn Mawr experience,
but I also see the need for changes to improve it and make it a place where every single student can feel good about their experience. For me, it’s important to push for more diverse faculty and use my position as an alum to help improve the school I love. Whether it’s giving back financially, being a mentor, advocating for change or just being a listening ear for current students, we want to do our part and give back to a place that gave us a lot. As we take stock of where we are and work to improve and create the best Bryn Mawr experience for all, we have to remember to always lead with love, and that’s what our class has always done.”

She was confident, brilliant and had a clear understanding of how she’d make her mark on the future. At one point, we wandered past Justin Curtis and his class—the kids were fully engaged, and what he was teaching was challenging, but understandable. He came out into the hall to chat with us, and Justin’s approach to education and technology aligned with our educational goals. We were deeply impressed then and continue to be impressed with Bryn Mawr’s program. 10

The Bryn Mawr administration and faculty are receptive to thinking strategically about the future, and they are committed to taking action. What is more fulfilling than working with a group of people who are willing to be challenged as they think about alternative futures—and then make the necessary decisions and take necessary actions?
Why did you decide to give of your time and talent to the school? That’s a good question, because I don’t donate my time to my own alma maters. As a parent, I have a vested interest in the future of my daughter’s education. But I’m compelled to volunteer
again (and again!) because I’m deeply inspired by Sue Sadler and her vision for the school. I see the enthusiasm she inspires in the staff and faculty, and I see how hard Bryn Mawr’s teachers are working for their students. Anne Puckett, who teaches music in the Lower School, created singalong videos for families during the quarantine last spring. Noah Robinson, the science teacher, called families just to say hello—and then created weekly science videos. Many of the teachers visited students’ homes. Schools can feel transactional. Bryn Mawr is a community. As a member of that community, I think it’s my obligation to contribute.

WHY WE GIVE “ We give to the Bryn Mawr School because it has been an incredible and supportive community for our whole family. When we started out in the Little School, we were looking for a nurturing and stimulating place for our young children. We had no idea at that time all of the amazing faculty, parents and kids we’d have the opportunity to meet and grow with along the way. No doubt our daughter, Emma, has been given an invaluable foundation to make her way in the world after 17 years at Bryn Mawr, but it has also enriched us all in so many ways. For that we are grateful and will continue to give.” – Joy Napier-Joyce & Keir Joyce P’20

REPORT ON GIVING
WHY I GIVE “ I give to Bryn Mawr for many reasons, but primarily among them, is the reality that I had so many gifted teachers. The impact of their knowledge, wisdom, guidance (and help when needed) has stayed with me for a lifetime. Perhaps greatest thanks should go to our Headmistress Katharine Van Bibber who gathered together a wealth of talent and who, throughout her years, guided her students by her own personal, deep commitment to essential values, not to be forgotten as we made our way through the years to come.” – Peggy Mock Obrecht ‘56, P’79

Congratulations and Thank You
to the Class of 2020!
“ The Class of 2020 demonstrated resilience and thoughtfulness in the face of some of their most challenging moments this spring.” – Emily Fetting ’02

REPORT ON GIVING
This spring, the Class of 2020 rose to the many challenges the COVID-19 pandemic presented with resilience, grace and generosity. Over the last four years, the seniors worked hard to raise funds for their Prom. They sold candy bags at Halloween in tenth grade, candles and chocolate bars in eleventh grade and hosted Bryn Mawr’s most successful Bingo event this past winter. In total, they raised approximately $10,000 to throw their final party at Bryn Mawr. After the onset of the pandemic, when it became apparent they would have to cancel Prom, the senior class agreed to transfer their savings to Bryn Mawr’s COVID-19 Relief Fund, which offers tuition assistance to current Bryn Mawr families affected by the pandemic.
Dean of Students and Chief Advisor for the Class of 2020, Emily Fetting ’02, expressed her pride in the senior class for their generosity and ability to think of others during a difficult time. “The Class of 2020 demonstrated resilience and thoughtfulness in the face of some of their most challenging moments this spring, and this is another wonderful example. Taking funds for a class party that would have been all about them, and turning them over to a cause that is all about others, that’s the Class of 2020 to a tee, and we could not be prouder of them for it.” In addition to their contribution to Bryn Mawr’s COVID-19 Relief Fund, parents, grandparents and friends of the class raised $107,395 for faculty professional development for their class gift. Joy Napier‑Joyce and Keir Joyce P’20 served as the Senior Gift Chairs. 2019–2020

WHY WE GIVE “ When we chose Bryn Mawr for our daughter, it was not a decision we took lightly. We considered her enrollment to have also been a commitment by us as her parents to fully participate in the larger Bryn Mawr community. So, we give of our time by actively engaging with the school administration to work towards our goal of making Bryn Mawr the best environment it can be for our daughter to develop and thrive. We are happy to partner with the school community to work towards greater diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of the Bryn Mawr experience, in particular so that girls of color are supported and protected in meaningful ways. We give our time by coordinating volunteer activities for our daughter’s class, by working to facilitate internships for older Bryn Mawr girls, by participating as class parents, supporting the Bryn Mawr entrepreneurship program and serving as members of various parent committees. We offer ourselves as resources to our fellow Bryn Mawr parents, to the students and the school in whatever ways we feel we can be helpful and positively affect the school community. We contribute funds to Bryn Mawr because we believe that the institution has an ambitious mission that requires financial support beyond just tuition payments. We believe the contribution of our time and financial resources are worthwhile investments in our daughter’s future.” – Melanie (Bryn Mawr Trustee) & Samuel Lennon P’30

Daisy Day January 31, 2020 marked the first official Daisy Day celebration at The Bryn Mawr School. Honoring the largest philanthropic gift in the school’s history, the city of Baltimore proclaimed the last Friday in January “Daisy Day” at Bryn Mawr, which would annually encourage members of the school community to share their pride and gratitude, be of service to the school and inspire others to do the same. The historic gift allowed the school to move forward with a transformative Student Center building project —one that would not only expand the school’s physical footprint with new athletic, performance, dining and
gathering spaces, but also rejuvenate its culture by encouraging the entire community to come together for a school-wide tradition.
Students enjoying hot chocolate and daisy cookies in the Hoene Dining Hall, sponsored by the Bryn Mawr Parents’ Association.
With the help of a faculty committee, each division chose an age-appropriate service project that culminated at a meaningful school-wide assembly. This year, the Little School partnered with Beans and Bread to create and decorate Kindness Kits filled with toiletries. Little School students assembled the kits, decorated the bags and made cards. Lower School participated in a ShareBaby Diaper Drive, which ultimately collected more than 10,000 diapers for donation. Middle School students created Valentine’s and birthday cards for all of the 175 residents at Keswick. They also painted flower pots and planted bulbs to deliver. Finally, the Upper
Students participate in Daisy Day service projects.
School creatively decided to “care for those who care for us” by taking over for an hour of service during the busy Bryn Mawr’s dining services and housekeeping part of the day.
The entire community came together for a new all-school tradition.
Daisy Day is just as much about giving as it is service. We would like to thank the Bryn Mawr parents, alumnae, grandparents, parents of alumnae, employees, trustees and friends who make Bryn Mawr a priority. The 2020 Daisy Day giving campaign raised more than $40,000 and exceeded the 150 donor goal. Save the date for next year’s Daisy Day on Friday, January 29, 2021. 2019–2020

WHY I GIVE “ I give to Bryn Mawr for two basic reasons. One is that I will be eternally grateful for the quality of the education I got there, which helped lay the foundation for the additional learning I’ve been doing ever since, and for the precious relationships I formed with both teachers and students, some of which continue to this day. The second reason is that I want to help ensure that others —including those who may not be able to pay the full costs of tuition—are able to derive the same kind of benefits from an experience at Bryn Mawr that I did.” – Natalie Wexler ‘72

WHY I GIVE “ To be truthful, it’s because I’m selfish. In a gift I see what happened in the past, what is going on at present and potential on its way to fulfillment in the future—from the accomplished alum who graduated the year I was born, who with a big smile, attributes much of who she is to Bryn Mawr, to current students whose ingenuity, energy and generosity give me hope daily, to graduates who take a part of Bryn Mawr with them as they work for brighter days ahead. I’m selfish when I make a gift—it gives me great joy and that is pure serendipity.” – Jerry Brown, History Teacher and College Counselor

Special thanks to Parents’ Association President Christine Cross, the members of the Executive Board, class parents, committee chairs and the many outstanding volunteers who contributed their time, effort and enthusiasm to making the 2019–2020 school year successful. Parent volunteers supported the school through a generous gift of $5,000 to The Fund for Bryn Mawr as well as supporting a variety of events and programs, including the inaugural Toast & Taste social event, held in the Hoene Dining Hall and attended by more than 250 parents, alumnae and friends.
WHY I GIVE “ For 29-plus years I have taken stock in The Bryn Mawr School mission. I give because I believe that educating girls and providing them with the tools to lead consequential lives is vitally important, and no institution does a better job than Bryn Mawr.” – Terry Detorie, Director of Security
