2020–2021 Report on Giving

Dear Bryn Mawr Community, We are humbled by the incredible support of The Bryn Mawr School detailed in this Report on Giving. The 2020–21 academic year is one we will always remember for the strength, generosity and encouragement shared by you and the entire Bryn Mawr community. This year, Bryn Mawr achieved the impossible by providing a safe and supportive in-person learning environment for our students amidst a pandemic. Our extraordinary culture of community, innovation and focus on learning was never more evident as we continued to deliver on Bryn Mawr’s powerful mission to provide exceptional education for young women. We are extraordinarily proud of our resilience and optimistic about Bryn Mawr’s future. We simply could not have made it through this year without you! Philanthropy was essential in allowing the school to remain agile and respond to needs as they presented throughout the year. In 2020–21, alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends contributed more than $3,101,481 to Bryn Mawr. This includes new gifts to our endowment for financial aid, support for our teachers and capital gifts. A total of 1,292 donors gave more than $1.6 million in unrestricted gifts to The Fund for Bryn Mawr, which provides vital and immediate support for the school’s annual operating needs. It is this extraordinary generosity that allows Bryn Mawr to uphold the highest standards of academic, athletic, arts and extracurricular excellence for which our school is known. Thank you to the many alumnae and families who played an important role in the life of the school this year by serving as alumnae class representatives, volunteering for the Parents’ Association or Alumnae Association, getting involved in academic programs or enthusiastically cheering on the sidelines. We are grateful for your engagement and partnership. We hope you will use this Report on Giving to look back on the year, acknowledge your inspiring contributions and celebrate some of the milestones that we reached together. As we continue to experience the effects of this pandemic, we are deeply grateful for this community who rallied during difficult times to let our students know that their Bryn Mawr education is more important than ever.

For Generations to Come

Kindergarten students carry on the Bryn Mawr tradition of making a special wish as they walk through the Owl Gate.

Dr. Robin Wagner ’83 wants to help support the bold voices and ambitions of Bryn Mawr students for generations to come, even after she is gone. Growing up in the 1970s and early 1980s, Robin credits her Bryn Mawr experience with allowing her to dream big about her future. During a time when society was changing and challenging traditional roles for women, she says Bryn Mawr ingrained in her “there is no limit to what I can do.”

6

2020–2021 Report on Giving

“I didn’t have to think about what people would think about me when I raised my hand. I was supported for doing that,” Robin recalled. “I have memories of getting to study and learn and do whatever I wanted to do. I remember having a lot of academic freedom.” To ensure that future generations of Bryn Mawr students feel similarly emboldened, Robin joined the Ex Solo Ad Solem Society, a group of generous donors who have included Bryn Mawr in their estate planning through bequests, appreciated securities, gifts of real estate or other assets. Although she is relatively young for an Ex Solo Ad Solem Society member, Robin made the decision to include Bryn Mawr in her estate planning. A dedicated student and self-described “very focused academic type,” Robin used her time at Bryn Mawr to explore her interests, including the sciences and photography. When she wasn’t studying, she could often be found in the dark room. “I took photographs for the yearbook and the newspaper and generally got to spread my wings far and wide,” she said. Robin carried that academic drive and varied interests through her life, receiving an undergraduate degree first from Princeton University, earning a Ph.D. from Harvard University, and ultimately graduating from DePaul

“ There is also this assumption that these institutions that matter to us will exist well beyond us. We think about the fact that we want that institution to still be there, to thrive and to have a meaningful mission even when we aren’t here anymore.” – DR. ROBIN WAGNER ’83

University College of Law summa cum laude and Order of the Coif, with a certificate in public interest law. When Robin and her wife Sharon began estate planning together, they both decided that “there are institutions that shaped us, that formed us and that matter, and whatever wealth we accumulate should go towards them.” Depending on their wishes, members of the Ex Solo Ad Solem Society can designate gifts towards specific areas or programs that are important to them. Or like Robin, they can choose to allocate funds to build Bryn Mawr’s endowment, which helps sustain Bryn Mawr’s mission. Robin did not stipulate specifically how her legacy gift should be used, but acknowledged “I very much want it to be used for scholarships. I think the opportunity to extend a Bryn Mawr education to students who otherwise would not be able to [attend] is extremely important.” While most philanthropic gifts have a sense of immediacy and the opportunity to see the impact on an organization, planned gifts require a different mindset from the donor.

A planned gift is a deferred contribution made through your will, life insurance, retirement assets or trusts and can offer you and your family tax benefits.

“There is also this assumption that these institutions that matter to us will exist well beyond us. We think about the fact that we want that institution to still be there, to thrive and to have a meaningful mission even when we aren’t here anymore,” Robin said.

WHY I GIVE

“ I give to Bryn Mawr because my parents gave me the 12‑year gift of BMS—which turned out to be the gift of a lifetime. I have given to BMS every year since graduation at whatever amount I could (many years a symbolic $93 for my class year) because I think consistency is important in giving back. I have given to BMS to promote both its growth (e.g., for new projects) and to support its change (e.g., DEI). In addition to annual giving, I also make a special gift each year to the endowment in honor of my dad that supports the Edith Hamilton scholars. This program was started after I graduated, but I feel an affinity for it because I received the Edith Hamilton scholarship award in junior year. And it is a way to honor my parents for the sacrifices they made to give me the gift of Bryn Mawr.” – CORINNE FUNK HAMMONS ’93

Carol Siegrist Caballero ’81 said, “Our class is very inclusive in that way… we consider you a part of our class, please come back for reunions.” They simply wanted as many classmates as possible to come together once again. “Reunions tend to bring out people who feel good about themselves and where they are in life,” Amy Bowerman Freed ’81 said. “And the people who are struggling think it’s a measuring contest. WHY I GIVE

“ The reason I give to the Annual Fund is easy—I love the students. I’m going on my 25th year at BMS so I’ve seen many classes graduate and go on to be fabulous contributors in society. They are daughters, mothers, sisters, aunts, friends, partners, wives, compassionate and hardworking individuals. These students graduate smarter, kinder and wiser because of the great education they have received at BMS. I hope my donation is both a thank you to the school and also a small contribution to provide them with the necessary tools and support they need in the classroom and around campus to be successful women and lead ‘considered and consequential lives.’” – GINA CANESTRARO P’25

Building Bridges of Understanding

In creating the Bridges of Understanding endowed fund at Bryn Mawr, Peggy Mock Obrecht ’56, P’79 recalled the words of author Garry Wills: “Real caring is inclusive not exclusive. It rejoices at signs of compassion for any human group.” 32

WHY WE GIVE “ We are so grateful for all the gifts Bryn Mawr has given to our daughter that we make it a priority to give back in any way we can. Since transitioning [to Bryn Mawr] three years ago, she has blossomed into an outspoken, accomplished young woman. She has been encouraged and challenged both in and out of the classroom by a community of highly engaged teachers and equally driven, impassioned peers. Bryn Mawr is instilling the skills—like learning to read, write and think critically—as well as the work ethic and values necessary for her to continue growing and thriving throughout her life. Even with the many unforeseen challenges of COVID, the Bryn Mawr community has continued to shine, offering the support and sanity needed over the past year. It’s heartwarming to watch our daughter head off to school each morning full of energy, ready to take on the world.” – LAUREN AND FLEMMING MADSEN P’24

WHY WE GIVE

“ We give to Bryn Mawr as a way to contribute to the larger Bryn Mawr community. We are incredibly fortunate that our daughters are a part of ‘Mawrtian Nation,’ and we have been thrilled to see how the faculty and staff at Bryn Mawr have supported their growth over the years—we know they are being prepared well to take their place as leaders. We have no doubt that our support of The Bryn Mawr School is an important investment in the future.” – DR. LEIGH MATLAGA AND DR. BRIAN MATLAGA P’22, ’25

Around the world, the Bryn Mawr community came together in spirit and service to celebrate Daisy Day on January 29, 2021. Daisy Day is an opportunity to share school pride while being of service to the school and inspiring others to do the same. Bryn Mawr parents and past parents, alumnae, grandparents, employees, trustees and friends joined together to raise more than $89,400 for The Bryn Mawr School. The campaign generated gifts from more than 250 donors. While this year’s event looked different from previous Daisy Days, students were still able to share their generosity with the greater Baltimore community through divisional community service projects.

Middle School students combined the work of Empty Bowls, a grassroots organization working to end food insecurity around the country, with Daisy Day to create Empty Bowls kits. Each grade created an element of the kits. Sixth grade added the biscuit mixes, seventh grade assembled the soup mixes and eighth grade made origami swan ornaments.

In the Upper School, Community Service Learning (CSL) members led an initiative to write notes of “I hope that Daisy Day becomes a day of gratitude and well wishes for Bryn significance in your life—a time each year Mawr employees that you’ll feel connected to the school as well as residents and the entire Bryn Mawr sisterhood and of Keswick, Broadmead and network that are with you for life!” – SUE SADLER Kennedy Krieger. It was a year like no other, but through creative thinking and adaptability we stayed connected. We cooked together, learned together and heard from incredible experts and best-selling authors. We enjoyed an amazing performance by famed illusionist Justin Willman and we shared in heartfelt and important Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) conversations. To top off the year, our class baskets were a huge success, allowing the PA to make a $5,000 gift to The Fund for Bryn Mawr! Thank you for your time and talents, parents!
