How To Get Top Dollar For Your Business In 2023

A business is defined as “an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial, industrial, or professional activities” (Investopedia. com) or “any activity or enterprise entered into for profit” (Wikipedia) but is also an amalgam of dynamic, intangible, fluid human interactions and activities that celebrate the human spirit through enterprise and meaning.

A business broker’s role is to synthesise these elements into a whole and convert them into cash.

That cash amount can be the top value of the business or not! How can a business owner assist in the process of ensuring that their business has maximised its value?

Start with an exit plan! This will provide the framework and be the analysis tool for ensuring all the elements that comprise the business are performing in unison to ensure optimal value. An exit plan is a comprehensive plan that will enable an owner to exit their business on their terms and at their price. The Covid pandemic has changed the focus within the plan for many businesses, particularly when it comes to people. With unemployment sitting at 3.5% the availability of both skilled and unskilled workers has become critical and a threat to the exit strategy of many businesses.

Enact a strategy to attract and retain staff. Seeing people as the most important element within your business may be critical to attracting key people. People play a key role in deciding workplace culture, in the words of the great Peter Drucker, “recruitment is a life and death decision”.

Drucker also said that "organizational culture eats strategy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and shouldn't be left unattended." As a business owner looking to exit your business ensure that the people culture within your

business is the glue that holds it together and is part of the magic that creates excellence. It is important to see knowledge and skills development as an investment and a way of doing business and not a cost. A business owner with a strong people culture and plan that has been used to attract and retain staff gives a business added value.

The corollary being excellence in customer service that has both an internal and external focus that follows from such a focus.

A successful people investment strategy will enable an owner to focus on working on the business and not in it. A buyer is more likely to pay a premium if you can demonstrate that your business can be run independently.

There are many elements to an exit plan and I have highlighted just one very important one, people.

Be adventurous, see how you can ensure that you can get the top dollar for your business in 2023 by being an employer of choice, in the words of the Bard, “our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt”.

All the best for 2023!

TO BUSINESS BROKER

Since my early childhood living in inner Melbourne, I have always been around businesses, in a family heavily involved in the hospitality industry. We owned and operated petrol service-stations incorporating restaurant and takeaway facilities. Located on major traffic highways between Melbourne and Sydney, it was not unusual for 50 full busloads of passengers to arrive hungry and thirsty in a short space of time, in addition to the everyday service needs of car and truck commuters.

After moving back to Melbourne, I was involved in a range of successful businesses including French and Italian restaurants, pizza takeaway shops, sandwich bars and a fast-food establishment. My involvement included buying, operating, and selling these profitable businesses. With this extensive hospitality experience, I then shifted to the food service sector.

As a food service distributor for 20 years, my company supplied more than 150 businesses weekly with over 7000 product lines needed for customer food and beverage demands. Financial opportunity, lifestyle and flexibility, are all motivating factors for people to own a business. As I built bonds and relationships with business owners, both personally and professionally, I saw businesses flourish and fail. I also witnessed

ownership and management changes. I grew a deeper understanding of what determines success, where mistakes happen, and changing customer trends.

I know that owning a business is challenging with a high risk-toreward ratio. If everything goes well, then financial benefits are reaped. If the business fails –after placing so many hopes and resources on the business – much can be lost. These insights formed a bedrock of knowledge and the foundation of a crucial network of business operators for me. A natural platform was created to transition towards the opportunity to become a business broker.

I needed a new challenge and knew my skills would be well suited to supporting people to understand and navigate what can sometimes be a minefield when entering and exiting businesses. Having stood on both sides of the counter - as a buyer and a seller, I knew I could gain trust through regular communication and supply of factual information, to allow an educated decision with confidence in the process.

In addition to a lifetime of business acumen, as a business broker I can now identify and highlight the most important aspects in any business, and interpret critical information including pressures and problems that may crop up within a transaction for both

vendors and purchasers.

With vast experience and keen instincts in all aspects of business sales and operations, I have confidence in approaching every business sale, knowing that I can broker a deal that will leave all parties satisfied. I have been told that I have a welcoming and affable personality, and as a strong and tenacious negotiator I get the deal done.

Across 17 years as an awardwinning business broker, my stellar industry reputation has been recognised and appreciated. I have now listed more than 900 businesses in Hospitality, Manufacturing, Logistics, Distribution, Retail and Automotive sectors, positioning me as one of the most-trusted brokers in the LINK network.

RESEARCH SHOWS 9 OUT OF 10 STUDENTS WANT TO BE ENTREPRENEURS

Based in Melbourne, Australia, I am delighted to share my business and teaching experience with young entrepreneurs, to help them discover their inner talents and learn new skills, naturally. My goal is to have a driven child who wants to learn how to make money and how school studies can benefit in realising their entrepreneurial dreams.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Entrepreneurship trends are on the rise among young people. And while some of them are yet to complete formal education, their ambitious and entrepreneurial mindsets are shaping the way to their future employment.

We are talking about Gen Z. Born between 1995 and 2009, they are called the valuesdriven generation. Mccrindle research identifies their top hopes as owning a home and having financial freedom and independence, and one of their greatest fears is not having enough money to live comfortably.

The same research finds that most Gen Z anticipate running their own business or a side hustle,

which will help them complement and diversify their future income streams. Interestingly, this trend is predicted to intensify among newer generations, such as Gen Alpha, with 4 in 5 today’s primary school kids expected to run a business of their own at some point in their lives.

There are a few factors that contribute to this trend. More people from the family or community venture to start a business of their own, enjoy flexible lifestyles and align work with their values. Exposure to such experiences, and often involvement in support roles, inspires and helps young people build confidence to commercialise their own business ideas.

Secondly, business education is widely available at low or no cost, with virtual learning

8

convenient to pursue at any time. Lastly, the availability of easyto-enter platforms to produce and monetise self-made content also plays a role in driving entrepreneurial thinking forward.

A recent Instagram survey of Gen Z based in the US found that nearly two-thirds of them plan to use social media to make money in 2023 - Instagram

It is thus safe to suggest that interest towards entrepreneurship will continue to rise among young generations in the coming years.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR BUSINESSES IN THE FUTURE?

Being tech-savvy and visually

engaged, Gen Z live increasingly digitally integrated lifestyles. They expect more flexibility in the workplace and more alignment with their core values.

According to McCrindle, 3 in 5 of them fear being stuck in a job they don’t enjoy or find fulfilment in. This may prompt employers to be very clear about the purpose and values their organisations deliver to the world, to ensure the provision of more meaningful careers for Gen Z employees.

Greater career mobility (an average school leaver could have 18 jobs across 6 careers over their working life) and less reliance on a single source of income may suggest less loyalty to employers, with financial incentives not seen as a major benefit. This may mean that organisations should think of a greater alignment of jobs with the core values of their employees and offer non-monetary benefits, such as flexible working lifestyles and learning opportunities to help them excel in their careers.

HOW MISS M ONLINE IS ASSISTING WITH THAT TREND?

Founded by a qualified marketer and a business professional with firsthand entrepreneurial experience, the online business educational project Miss M Online Classes pursues two goals. First, it helps young adults, teens and pre-teens develop an entrepreneurial mindset which is recognised as the essential skill of the future to thrive in the workplace. Through understanding core marketing concepts, such as value proposition, customers, competition, positioning and communications, young people learn about marketing and what drives business decisions and sales. Presented through simple language and life-based examples, business education for young people equips them with a holistic understanding of how business works.

Next, students learn to recognise marketing effects, such as colour perceptions, selling words or supermarket layouts, to be able to critically assess the marketing languages directed at them and make smart buying decisions, avoid impulse purchases and stay in control of their shopping behaviours.

With informational overload continuing, it is the responsibility of professionals to share valuable knowledge to help raise financially educated people who will be able to confidently navigate the business environment, whether as future business owners or shoppers. And this is exactly what Miss M online Classes strive to deliver to emerging generations.

LINK’S EXPANSION FUELS SUCCESS

Farzin Hesari

As a former accountant and financial planner with almost 50 years in the industry, Allan has a wealth of experience to share. Offering his unique perspective on business, Allan is part of the Bsale writing team.

10

rom an inauspicious start as an entrepreneur, Farzin Hesari has worked hard to build powerhouse business brokerages – first in Tasmania before expanding to Melbourne and, more recently, Adelaide.

In the early 2000’s, Farzin realised that the growth and income opportunities for business owners far exceed those of employees, so he decided to enter the import business. Saving sufficient funds from his part-time employment for his first order, he confidently paid $1,000 for a shipment of DVD players from China.

Farzin explained, “ I could bring them into Australia for about $150 and sell them for $500 or $600 each, which is cheaper than you could find them anywhere else. I thought that was a good way to make some money.”

However, the supplier’s enthusiasm for sending the goods did not match Farzin’s enthusiasm to receive them, and eventually, Farzin had to accept that he had been scammed. Fortunately for future-Farzin, he decided that this disappointment would not determine his fate.

This early experience taught him the value of research and that everyone you deal with in business does not share common interests, so a degree of healthy scepticism is required until trust is earned. He borrowed another $1,000 from the bank of Mum and Dad and tried again.

“This time, I did my due diligence and made sure the supplier was legitimate. I made sure it was an operating business, I spoke to the people, and I got advice from other importers.”

Repeating the process many times over the next few years, the orders and the range of products became bigger until the business finally outgrew his parents’ garage. After his friend made an amicable exit from the business, Farzin tried to continue with

outsourced help, but he quickly realised that it was time to sell the existing inventory and move onwhich he did.

THE VIDEO ERA

With the surplus funds he raised, 17-year-old Farzin decided to buy a video store with potential in a small shopping centre.

While negotiating the lease transfer from the existing owner, Farzin’s determination piqued the landlord's interest.

“He happened to be a very prominent businessman, and I was a teenager putting in an application to transfer the lease from the existing owner. He was thinking, who is this 17-year-old trying to buy a business with cash? He met me and saw something in me, took me under his wing, and mentored me to this very day.”

THE LIGHTBULB MOMENT

After successfully operating that video store for a few years, Farzin decided to sell. He was advised to engage a real estate agent to assist with the transaction.

As Farzin explained, “The real estate guy says, ‘how much do you want to sell your business for?’ I was expecting some guidance on what it was worth, but no, I had to tell them. The agent said, ‘You just tell me what you want for it, and we’ll sell it.’ “

Disillusioned with this situation, Farzin decided there had to be a better way. He continued, “I started researching online. I was looking for my next business opportunity where I could use my background in finance and my Bachelor of Business. So, I was back and forth, testing my ideas and thinking about what I wanted to do in life. I thought there has to be a better way for people to confidently know what their business is worth and who might be interested in buying it as well as how to market it.”

“During my search, I came across LINK Business Brokers. I could see that their systems and processes were market leading, but there was still room to improve”.

Farzin joined LINK in 2015 with the intention of building a career as well as changing the way the business broking industry operated. He worked hard and successfully marketed many clients’ businesses the way he envisioned. The LINK organization noticed his success, and he was invited to become part of the network.

Being given a greater degree of control was all Farzin needed. He proceeded to help further develop LINK's robust systems related to business value appraisals, customer relations, marketing, and comprehensive training for new business brokers entering the industry. These systems are continuously refined and upgraded for implementation throughout the LINK network in Australia & New Zealand.

The effectiveness of the LINK systems was demonstrated with the acquisition of the Melbourne office (formerly Klemms) in 2018. Since converting to the LINK process, the business volume has doubled and is still improving. This process is being duplicated in the recent acquisition of the Adelaide office.

SO, WHERE TO FROM HERE?

Of course, Farzin is not ready to slow down. He disclosed that, in early December, he and his childhood friend and business partner Nawwar Alshawi, entered into a joint venture partnership of the LINK master franchise in Australia and has significant expansion plans for the group.

“We're in the process of expanding and growing the network, bringing on new franchise partners and new brokers to join the existing offices. We’ll be doing a roadshow next year and expanding into

F
11

all (not just some) major cities. We're also going to be creating new offices within those cities and expanding further into Western Australia, Northern Territory, Far North Queensland, and other areas in Victoria and New South Wales. There’s plenty of growth for us in 2023.”

“We may decide to enter a new market by acquisition of an existing firm or opening a brandnew office, but more recently, existing brokers have approached us wanting to join the LINK group. They want to join the only real national or international business broking network. They want access to the benefits of being part of the network.”

“Access to our training and market value appraisal systems and other software, as well as our CRM systems, are major benefits. We provide all the IP and the technology to create and hold excellent brokers.”

The training, which includes six months of mentoring, is invaluable for those just starting out. The training program is structured and expertly delivered by successful brokers.

A key feature of the training is negotiation skills which are a critical part of the broking business. Walking the fine line between a buyer and a seller is an important skill to achieve a successful transaction.

“All our brokers receive training on becoming expert negotiators. We've redefined and refined this training over many years, and I genuinely believe nobody else in the world does what we do.”

Training also extends to potential vendors who are trained in business valuation principles, including the key factors affecting the current market value appraisal of their business and how to improve the market value. The vendors are also educated on the need for accurate and

reliable financial information.

“If the vendor cannot provide us with accurate and true financial records, we can't demonstrate and justify the market value to potential buyers.”

WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL LINK BUSINESS BROKER?

All the training and resources cannot guarantee success.

if it's going to be detrimental to somebody else. So, integrity is the biggest part of our core values.”

Innovation and Disruption.

“We are very innovative and extremely disruptive in what we're doing, and we're going to be challenging everything that the business broking industry knows and has been doing. From valuing businesses to marketing,

Farzin attributes the success of individual brokers (and the LINK network) to a strong adherence to four fundamental values.

Integrity.

“What we do could make or break people. It can cost lives and cost relationships. So, we're very careful that we bring the right people on the journey because we don't want to do a transaction

to negotiations, to training, we are continuously refining these looking for improvements.”

Collaboration.

One of the opportunities available to members of the LINK network is the opportunity to work with many brokers across the country. For this reason, all members are encouraged to collaborate on creating deals, sharing

12

innovations, and enhancing the growth of the network.

Celebrating success.

“We celebrate success because we want to work with people that want to be successful.” Whether creating a successful deal or creating an opportunity for someone else, being willing to acknowledge and celebrate the win is important.

ARE HIGHER INTEREST RATES MAKING IT TOUGHER TO SELL BUSINESSES NOW?

Farzin does not believe interest rates will affect business sales significantly. He explained, “the traditional return on investment on a business, let's say, ranges from 35%, all the way up to 100%, depending on risk, where the current market interest rate is

following redundancies or simply the desire for a change.

“I believe people who have come from either an executive level or middle management level, where they've got experience in managing people, will do really well managing businesses. They'll take on businesses that may be struggling and put their expertise and talent into turning those businesses around.”

ARE THERE ANY HOT INDUSTRIES AT THE MOMENT?

LINK business brokers are seeing strong demand for businesses in the service sector - medical, dental, commercial cleaning, building services, maintenance, logistics, transport, childcare, and anything in allied health areas.

Farzin also included hospitality businesses. “Contrary to what people might believe, there is always a demand for businesses in the hospitality sector. If location, rent, and takings line up, the business will sell. The challenge with those industries is finding suitable staff to run them. It’s not just that the borders have been closed restricting the number of backpackers; it’s that people only want to work for three or four days or want to work from home.”

In summary, “For us, success means working collaboratively, working with integrity, being part of the passion for the disruption we're going through, and celebrating the successes is the key. When you do the best for your vendors and your purchasers, the money will come. You don’t become successful by chasing the money.”

about 7 or 8%. So, the margin of safety is quite large. Interest rates aren’t a big factor in determining whether to buy or sell a business unless someone's highly leveraged on the transaction.”

However, he sees continued high demand for quality businesses. He considers that businesses are bought for strategic reasons by other businesses or by individuals looking to replace incomes

Unfortunately, there’s no easy solution to this problem, so Farzin believes that there will be a high turnover of these hospitality businesses in 2023 as the current owners decide that the industry is not for them and seek an exit.

And Farzin could not avoid the temptation to add business broking to the “what’s hot” list. He is keen to talk to any broker looking for an opportunity to join a strong and dynamic network of business brokers or someone wanting to consider joining the industry.

Vanessa is the current manager and CEO of Bsale Australia. Over the past 11 years as a business owner, she understands what it takes to grow a business. As a writer and contributor on Bsale, she wants to bring informative articles that can assist people in the process of buying or selling a business.

Seven years ago the dream of owners Trish and Julie was to build a business that suited their lifestyle and passion, and they did just that.

“We have worked in the event and food industries for years and saw a need for it.”

“Julie rang me and said, ‘I don't

want to work a full-time job anymore do you want to start a donut van?’”

This call sparked the idea and these entrepreneurs set about creating van designs and establishing the business name.

“It's got to be something different, something fun and exciting and we thought ‘rockin’ so.. let's do Rockin’ Donuts and Coffee”

They went on to build a 50’s themes donut food van ‘Rockin’ Donuts and Coffee’ and later followed with the ‘Rockin’ Twistie Potatoe’ van that has customers beaming;

“Fresh, soft inside with a crisp, sugar-coated outside. Probably the best donuts I had in my life.” Joost Kramers, Google review.

“These donuts were amazing! Just happened to pass by on the way home, and tried them out! Delicious, and fresh! Will definitely be back!” Victoria Shields, Facebook.

With reviews like this and as a preferred supplier by Geelong Council, it's no wonder they draw a crowd. I mean, who can say no to hot crispy donuts?

“A lot of the events that we are at we will have lines of 100 people. We have a very good reputation. We are the drawcard at many events “

2023 IS BOOKED

SOLID

Every business owner knows the importance of future sales. Forecasts and projections are important to know what lies ahead and how to allocate resources.

These entrepreneurs have ensured their business is ready for the year ahead. “The new buyer will walk into a full diary of events” - what icing on the cake!

“A lot of people don't understand how hard it is to get into events. You can make a food van, but you can't take it anywhere unless you build relationships with people.”

Getting access to the best events in town - is where the money is at!

“We’re in over 50 annual events. That includes events such as Moomba, White Night, Geelong Show, Firelight, Cadel Evans Bike Race, Colac Show, The Geelong Revival, and The National Celtic Festival. All big events that are solidly booked”

P: 02 7228 0498
$20 SALES EVERY MINUTE. THIS MOBILE FOOD VAN IS ROCKIN’! 14

On average, these entrepreneurs work 100 days a year. Focused on events and weekend trade.

“We say no to two events every week because we can’t manage it with family commitments. We just focus on the big events. If you were younger and keener you could be working more than we do”

WHAT MAKES THESE VANS SO SUCCESSFUL?

Well besides the delicious hot donuts and ‘chips on a stick’? Quick turnaround!

Every operator knows that time is money and if you can’t produce food quickly enough you will lose customers to another food van.

“We're fast. We make one sale every 30 seconds”

“We can work with two people

in a van or at a festival we can have 5 people. So we’re very fast” With limited food wastage, this business model is very successful.

“We don't have a lot of waste. It's a very high-profit business that doesn't have a lot of preparation”

“It's a really fun business. It's not like going to work in an office. Wherever you go, everyone is out having fun and is in a really good mood. It’s lovely”

THE ROAD AHEAD...

Weekends and events are where the big money is.

“It's a great business and there is good money out there. We’re just getting a bit older”

“We did carols last night, it was fantastic, we made a lot of money, but it’s also a late night.”

These seasoned entrepreneurs have focused on events but agree there is so much room for weekday trade for energetic owners.

“We also have a location if someone did want to work during the week as well. They can park any days they want to.”

“We hold the lease on Portarlington foreshore for the potato van. We pulled out this year because we just can't manage. But the new owners can take this location and extend their trading hours”

With corporate and school events - there is the opportunity to extend the trading hours. Whilst it would be beneficial for the buyer to take on the current pre-booked events, Streatrader makes it easy for food vans to move throughout Victoria.

“We are registered in Geelong. All the councils in Victoria have an agreement. If you registered with one council you just put in an application with Streatrader and the other council picks up your details”

When questioned by Bsale who would be the perfect buyer the ladies laughed,

“Someone younger than us. Someone in their 40s with teenage children would be ideal”

With the time to focus on the grandkids, these entrepreneurs are ready to take a step back.

“We’ve really built a beautiful business were very proud of”

Forward bookings, impressive sales, genuine sellers - this business is ready for the new owners.

IT’S ALL ACTION IN QUEENSLAND!

2023 is shaping up to be extremely active across the Queensland business sales sector.

With the property market finally starting to slow down, the share market continuing to be quite unpredictable and at times volatile, and interest rates continuing to increase, many investors are looking to invest their funds into a solid business venture.

And why not? A solid business with strong foundations is going to provide an excellent return on investment compared to bricks and mortar or the average stock.

Due to this increase in buyer activity, sellers have the opportunity to create a competitive market for their business, especially if they are prepared to offer a proportion

of vendor finance or would be open to staying on for an earn-out period. This will often maximise the end result as it gives a buyer plenty of increased confidence.

As a great location for investment, Queensland is also experiencing an interstate migration boom.

According to a report from Sky News in September 2022, Queensland has again recorded the nation's highest population growth rate as it continues to benefit from residents leaving New South Wales and Victoria in their thousands.

Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in September showed Dustin Slypen

LINK Business Sales Brisbane

16

“Queensland's population grew by 1.8% in the year to March 31. The Sunshine State added more than 92,000 new residents in the 12-month period, taking its population to 5.296 million”.

The industry is also experiencing a generational shift away from

traditional means of family business, transitioning ownership to the children or grandchildren.

Many young entrepreneurs are chasing their own dreams online in areas they’re passionate about, not their parents or grandparent’s dreams. This often leaves the family no choice but to sell the business and an astute investor will reap the great rewards on offer.

Franchising also appears to be back on track, experiencing plenty of confidence across a variety of industries.

With many markets saturated with strong brands, whether it be food, fitness, beauty, manufacturing, pharmacy etc. a motivated buyer faces many obstacles with entering the market as a greenfield site. Therefore,

an established franchise with a trading history to measure, a secure lease and systems and processes already in place is extremely attractive to buyers. Finally, don’t hold on too long.

We have seen on countless occasions owners considering selling their business however delaying their decision and then the unthinkable happens and their business is worth considerably less or nothing at all.

You don’t want to make that decision.

If you have a very solid business and all your accounting is in order, the operational structure is sound and you’re thinking selling could be a wise idea – then turn it into a great idea and start your retirement or next venture early!

A LOOK INTO WHAT IT REALLY TAKES TO BE A BUSINESS BROKER

Author: Ray Dye Ozpax

Business Sales

For better or worse (Yes, it is a type of marriage), I can call myself a business broker. I have been a business broker for over 15 years and without being too nostalgic, I periodically think about my broking journey.

One story that springs to mind is when I remember a situation where I was a much less experienced broker.

It was a Friday evening at around 8pm and I had just put the final touches of a deal together. The deal was complicated by the fact that the buyer was crossing the border between Lesotho and South Africa during the negotiations.

He was relocating to South Africa but was needing to finalise

business interests before making the move permanent. It involved a payment of the purchase price in cash. (South African banks and money transfers were heavily regulated and primitive in comparison with modern-day banking systems).

This cash payment was even more complicated as there was a huge risk factor of being murdered and robbed at any stage of the transit. Furthermore, the payment was made in Pula, the currency of Lesotho and I was responsible for the money until Monday when I could with considerable risk, take it to the bank and exchange it for Rand, the South African currency.

19

Cash payments for a business purchase were legal but for some P. 0411 428 776 E. ray@ozpaxbusiness.com ozpaxbusinesssales.com
As a previous multiple business owner in South Africa, Canada and Australia, Ray has an exceptionally high level of expertise when it comes to knowing exactly what to look for when buying or selling a business.
‘YOU MAKE THIS LOOK EASY’

of the reasons already outlined: Not very common. (Furthermore, the banks charged a high levy on cash placed in the bank since they then carried the risk against bank robberies).

Another complication was that the cash transaction created suspicion and unease between the buyer and seller. Any negotiation has an element of unease as each of the parties postures to maximise their advantage, however, cash is definitely a catalyst as you will likely agree.

This was the final payment required to settle the business and pass ownership on to the buyer, the new owner.

As it was after office hours, I was sitting in the office surrounded by empty chairs and desks with my buyer. The silence was palpable but not unpleasant as we went through the finalisation of the documents and we hand-counted the cash.

When completed, I locked the money into the office safe, within another safe and I immediately extended my hand to him as an act of congratulations. He was now the new owner of his retirement business: A small but popular and dynamic bar.

We both fell silent for a period as the rigours of the previous negotiations that had exacted their toll over several months caused us to pause and reflect.

What happened next was to me, very, very interesting.

We were both high on the wonder “drug” adrenalin and he punctuated the sensory peace and reflection with the following comment.

“Ray you make this look very easy”.

This was a massive compliment to me.

He had recognised and witnessed my expertise, professionalism and duty of care but it was also a message to me, that I had achieved exactly what I had attempted to do and that was to manage all eventualities and expectations and making it much easier for the buyer and the seller and all of the other parties involved, to get the deal together.

It is important to understand that a business broker is about selling a business.

You have two primary parties, a buyer and a seller but the reach is much bigger than this as there are a lot of other parties that are involved.

If you ask me what my job as a business broker is; I would say to you that effectively, I am about managing conflicting agendas and responsibilities from different professionals such as landlords, solicitors, accountants and business advisors.

Each of these parties have their own agenda, risk management criteria and methodologies. They have their own outlook, paradigms and they have their own responsibilities that are required on their compliance spectrum.

When a broker comes along to do his/her job, the challenge is to find strategies that enable him/ her to manage these personalities, issues and work within the privacy framework in such a way that they can progress the deal.

Unfortunately, in so many ways, people think of the job as a business broker, to be merely a transactional negotiation. This means that you have a buyer and you have a seller. The idea is that you should get the job done in a manner not unlike a supermarket transaction.

However, it soon becomes apparent that the nature of business, the various personalities of business owners and buyers placed in juxtaposition with other

stake holders will enforce the need for a more comprehensive and involved solution.

Put plainly; to expect a straight transactional process is oversimplistic. It does not address a myriad of other elements, requirements and constraints that must be addressed in the sale of a business.

The complication is compounded as a business broker also operates in his/her professional compliance constraints. S/He by definition is the glue or fulcrum and leverage of the sale positioning.

It is also necessary that all the involved parties recognise that there are a whole lot of other requirements that are encountered in a deal to affect it. For example, a business broker although working for the Seller, must be reasonably neutral between the parties and focus on the desired outcome or sale.

The broker too must be driven by processes due to legal requirements and the interactions between people with different levels of expertise and the business as an entity.

The broker must avoid at all costs, the handicap of compulsion, bullying and fear as a methodology.

The aim is a Win-Win environment or as it is traditionally stated a “Willing Buyer and a Willing Seller”.

ARE MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS FOR SMALL BUSINESS?

What does the average person, including small business owners think of, when they hear the words “Mergers & Acquisitions”?

Those words conjure up images of movies and television shows about huge, billion dollar corporations attempting to take over other huge companies with high profile powerful lawyers, accountants and billionaire owners in $5,000 suits, all attempting to outdo each other. It all starts with a friendly proposal for a merger or an acquisition, but after several massive bun fights in the boardrooms and possible court room drama, in reality, it usually ends up with one of the corporations completely swallowing up the other. Even after all the promises to the contrary, in a short period of time, there’s very little left of that company’s identity or culture.

On the large movie screens or the small television screens, mergers and acquisitions are considered to only be in the domain of huge, multi-million or billion dollar businesses. In reality, a merger or an acquisition can be between any size company, including very small businesses.

Here is a scenario; Imagine a

very successful Mum and Dad fish & chips shop operating next to a family run struggling fried chicken shop. The owners of the fried chicken shop are tired of the long hours they must work just to survive, without getting ahead, no way to increase profits. The owners of the fish & chips shop decide that they would love to expand and by buying out the fried chicken business, not only will they have larger premises, but they can add fried chicken to their current impressive menu, increase the number of customers, reduce their administration costs and possibly obtain a better deal with the landlord. They engage a business broker who approaches the owners of the fried chicken shop. By utilising the services of a business broker, emotions are taken out of the equation, especially during the negotiating process. The broker sorts a deal with both parties, they agree on a price and take over the shop. This transaction is an acquisition, nothing less, nothing more. If the owners from both businesses had decided to join the two shops and benefit from each other’s customers, save money by reducing the staff, etc, this would have been a merger.

Very often the most cost effective,

best and quickest way for a small business to grow, expand their customer base and increase their profit is to acquire another business. The acquisition may be either in the exact same industry or a business that might be able to bolt on to their existing enterprise, by offering an additional range of product or services. Generally, there are also several cost savings, such as administration, to be achieved by merging with or acquiring another business.

If you own a small successful business and are finding it difficult to increase your turnover, number of customers, etc, you should seriously consider acquiring or merging with another business. Organise a meeting with an expert business broker for advice on how to proceed forward.

THE IMPACT OF COVID ON SMALL BUSINESSES IN AUSTRALIA

Australia is no exception. In particular, small businesses in Australia have been hard hit by the economic shutdowns and social distancing protocols that have been put in place to slow the spread of the virus. This article will provide a look at how these businesses have been affected and what is the ongoing effect post Covid-19.

THE IMPACT ON SMALL BUSINESSES GENERALLY

As with other countries, Australian small businesses have suffered greatly during this pandemic. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported that 577,000 jobs were lost between March and May 2020, with more than half of those losses coming from small business owners. Many of these businesses had to close their doors due to restrictions on movement.

masks, protective shields, rubber gloves and other ”Covid merchandise” This revenue stream was never going to maintain its momentum, so businesses had to look to the next pivot or hope business returned to normal soon.

The government stimulus and support programs managed to keep many of these businesses open, however as these programs wound down, businesses had to look to other resources to stay afloat.

The Impact on Retail Business

The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have been felt across the world, and

During the pandemic, being able to pivot was crucial. Manufacturers turned to making

Even before the pandemic struck, businesses were looking to online sales to boost their businesses and compete. With the onset of the pandemic, suddenly online was the only way people were shopping. Business owners who were well set up in e-commerce were quick to capitalise while others had to play catch up. Some still have not adapted.

The Impact on Manufacturing

Suddenly, with the effect of lockdowns been felt around the world, there was a supply chain crisis. Factories had been down on production, either because they had been locked down or their staff were home sick. This led to short supply and was the beginning of the inflation crisis now devastating economies.

Availability of Staff

For one reason or another, businesses were hit by staff shortages. Almost all industries were struck by this, however physical service business were severely affected. Pool services shops, landscaping businesses, general maintenance businesses, just to mention a few, suffered greatly. Work couldn’t be taken on, cost of wages went up as staff were poached and inexperienced staff left after only a few days as the pressure was too much.

Good News

While many businesses suffered, others did well. Here’s a list, which is by no means exhaustive:

• Suburban cafes and bakeries (people working from home and supporting local businesses)

• Business associated with take

away as opposed to sit down meals (Pizza for example)

• Mortgage brokers, financial planning businesses and insurance brokerages

• Courier businesses supporting the online economy

• Businesses supporting home working, like technology equipment suppliers and other IT related businesses

• Real estate, both sales and property management.

Winners and Losers

The losers were those that relied on personal contact to make business.

The winners were those that could operate from home and whose industries didn’t have to close down during the pandemic.

Lessons Learned

Maintain a strong culture within your organisation (helps with retention)

Be nervous whenever you feel comfortable.

Plan and train for the next future shock scenario

The Future

As this article reflects, the future

of business belongs to those who can:

• Adapt and pivot quickly (small business thrives here)

• Run businesses offering above award wages

• Create a culture where staff are not simply motivated by money

• Provide flexibility to staff

• Maintain a good balance between employed and contracted staff.

• Deliver their service through many different avenues

Australian business might look the same to you, but sadly the landscape is littered with failed business, bankruptcies and devastating personal loss. Empty shops and offices will be retenanted. The great Aussie spirit will prevail. We hope those same survivors will share the lessons of survival they have learnt. We learn most from our periods of hardship and challenge.

HERE IS WHAT WE FOUND.

For over two years, the Australian economy has faced uncertainty and market volatility as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns. While market shifts, particularly those observed during the pandemic, can induce fear and worry among brokers and clients, a transition in focus and mentality is required to adapt to the "new age" of business brokering.

Our determination to change gears in the face of shifting markets has been critical to our performance over the past year, leading to our success in selling over 15 businesses in the hospitality (40%), retail (20%) and distribution (20%) sectors.

Here, we offer some insights we've gained over the past year that could help you succeed in this dynamic, fast-paced industry – in the context of a highly unstable economy and environment:

ROBUST SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES ARE FAIL-SAFE GUARANTEES

During the prior year's pandemic lockdowns, we made an effort to focus on our systems and processes, essentially fine-tuning all our back-end activities. We optimised our coordination process, analysed market trends and Purchaser requirements as

well as found the most effective and user-friendly marketing channels and tools available. We had many things ready to go when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, enabling us to work with minimal disruption.

KNOW WHAT YOUR CLIENTS NEED

Instead of putting up as many listings as possible, we focused on investigating what our clients needed. Beginning in 2020, we concentrated on understanding Purchasers' reasons for acquiring, whether they are operators looking to expand, parents who have lost their corporate jobs or hospitality operators thriving thanks to government subsidies.

We anticipated what strategy to take when clients were ready to purchase or sell since we had already identified who required what. This has been beneficial, especially for private equity clients, who typically have extremely precise mandates. We were able to readily establish a common interest between Vendors and Purchasers that we are attempting to pair up due to our thorough grasp of the varying demands of our

clients. This enabled us to simplify our role as sales facilitators, requiring relatively little effort to persuade Purchasers to make an offer.

UNDERSTAND MARKET TRENDS AND PROJECTIONS

It is no secret that the COVID-19 lockdowns have created significant hurdles for business owners, including workforce and supply chain issues. This is also the fundamental reason for the

high ratio of Vendors to Purchasers during the last two years, as Purchasers sensibly fear the risks of running a business during this period. However, as business brokers, we believe that it is our responsibility to identify these challenges and understand how they may be mitigated as well as how the shifting market will influence or improve them in the long term.

As the economy gradually recovered in 2022, it is our responsibility to ensure that Purchasers recognise that these challenges are just temporary. In a way, they are acquiring a business at a discounted rate. The assured recovery of immigration is also certain to improve revenue over time, particularly for hospitality businesses that rely on tourism. Furthermore, while income for the previous two years has been predictably low for most businesses, Vendors ought to be aware that more Purchasers are now acquiring primarily on goodwill rather than financial records.

THERE’S NO NEED FOR CONVINCING WHEN YOU’RE BEING REALISTIC

Most brokers today value businesses primarily on their Vendors’ pricing expectations and multiples, often missing the step of reviewing and considering updated market data. However, we were one of the few brokers in the market that priced adequately based on comparable business sales in the past.

In 2022, we found that Vendors prefer to deal with us because of our brutal honesty! We weren't hesitant to offer them comparable sales, advise them to lower pricing if necessary and be upfront about how different the market is during the pandemic. While our pricing strategy is contemporary and suitable for the times, it has occasionally resulted in Vendor pushback.

Vendors frequently take time to recognise what we do. We've had vendors hang up on us or slam doors in our faces because they believe other brokers can get them twice as much as we can. At the end of the day, the same vendors contact us, and some of them have led us to some of our most successful sales. Overall, we strongly believe that being realistic is what propelled us to the next level.

THE PANDEMIC HELPED US FORGE STRONG TIES

Some of the Purchasers we've dealt with in the previous six months, in our experience, have already forgotten who we are. On the contrary, the Purchasers we communicated with during the pandemic lockdowns are still calling and displaying interest in dealing with us.

During the pandemic, one of our prospective Purchasers made an offer but had to relocate overseas. As a result, the transaction fell through. Only recently, he called us to say he's returned and wants us to find him a solid business to acquire. Despite speaking with ten different agents and being presented with ten various listings, he sought us first to engage our services – not because he wants to acquire now, but because he wants to buy with us.

KNOW YOUR WORTH

We acknowledge that the manner we market our listings is rather unconventional and more expensive than that of other brokers. Nevertheless, both Vendors and Purchasers choose to spend a premium price to engage us for our services. Business brokering has become more technologically driven which we have adapted with flying colours while staying current with recent industry trends. We have the expertise and results to justify our premium price. We have established our cutting-edge marketing approach over the years, and we are certain that the market must adapt to what we do.

If clients do not appreciate our way of doing things, we do not take them on. Simple as that.

RECAP

2022 was a bright year for business brokers, as both Purchasers and Vendors gained confidence as market conditions were more steady than the previous year, if not improving. To reiterate, the key to our success was our ability to determine who our Purchasers were, our commitment to having robust systems and processes, recognising our clients' needs and pairing them with only the most qualified businesses.

30-YEAR-OLD FOOD INSTITUTION HITS THE MARKET IN VICTORIA

Vanessa is the current manager and CEO of Bsale Australia. Over the past 11 years as a business owner, she understands what it takes to grow a business. As a writer and contributor on Bsale, she wants to bring informative articles that can assist people in the process of buying or selling a business.

It's humble beginning as a Polish inspired delicatessen in the 1990s has seen this business grow from strength to strength.

When two kids fresh out of university decided the corporate world wasn't for them, they embarked on their own entrepreneurial journey.

THE KRANSKY STALL

In 2009, with the festival season open in Melbourne, the young entrepreneurs set about opening a Kransky stall in Federation Square.

To ensure it was a winner - they needed one major ticket itemhigh-quality kransky’s!

“We approached this husband-

and-wife team and bought 1,000 sausages from them…. We sold out at this festival in three hours and made the most money” current owner.

It was a lightbulb moment and these foodies knew they were onto something.

As these entrepreneurs continued to grow and expand their market business the opportunity to purchase the original delicatessen became available in 2013.

MORE THAN JUST A DELICATESSEN

Full of ideas and a passion to be successful these budding entrepreneurs embraced the challenge and took over the business.

Modernizing systems, expanding product range, communicating to a broader customer base and importantly relocating to a purpose-built 330sqm Food store café location in the heart of Melbourne’s South Eastern metro growth corridor.

Their formula is simple – stock products that you cannot find at the major supermarkets.

In a world of growing healthconscious buyers looking for foods that are pure and not highly processed, the Foodstore is the answer. They source artisan goods from local makers as well as imported speciality goods from around the world.

Importantly a huge point of difference is their exclusive relationship with their sister ‘smallgoods manufacturing’ business. This has enabled a huge patronage and a draw card attracting buyers to high-quality smallgoods that cannot be easily found elsewhere. “This exclusivity arrangement will be extended to the prospective buyers”

Out the back you’ll see there is a full commercial kitchen that pumps out more of their own product lines and has plenty of upside potential for a new owner.

The European style food-store boasts a 10m long deli counters, you can browse aisles of weird and wonderful speciality foods. A huge wall of pickles and sauerkraut pays homage to the owners’ Polish roots, as well as a freezer full of house made Pierogi Polish dumplings. Salted herrings, smoked eel, tinned sprats, cod liver, hard to find cheeses such as proper quark cheese. You might even catch the staff cracking a 40kg 3yr old wheel of Parmesan.

It's a full European food store, bread, sweets and temptations are plenty; baked cheesecakes, poppyseed strudels and babkas tempt you from top of the deli counter. There's also a café side pumping out coffee and good value sandwiches

THE CALIBRE

This business is nothing short of a well-oiled machine. With management in place and six team members, this business is fully systemised and ready for the new owners.

“It's fully under management. There's a manager and an office manager... I’m there maybe one day a week”

This delicatessen is no run-of-themill operation. It has been fully established by these business owners to ensure its success.

“Full supermarket style point of sale system. Where everything is tracked, there's security cameras… etcetera. Operationally, there's some really good systems in place”

Notably, this food-store is a wellestablished brand within the Melbourne food scene with a suite of editorials published, regular mentions in food media source as well as strong social media following.

SO, WHY THE SALE?

These business owners always had success as part of their plans.

Over the past 9 years, these passionate business owners and their team have established a very successful business in a growing area.

Expanding on their knowledge and expertise these owners are focusing their sights on food

manufacturing. Driven to create innovative products with a plan to become Australia’s best premium small goods supplier. The current owners are moving into the manufacturing space.

The opportunity exists to buy the business with a lease agreement or purchase the business and commercial premises.

Who would be the right buyer for this business?

“We are really genuine people. Hopefully, we find the next custodian.”

It's evident the owner's passion for this 30-year-old delicatessen that launched their first entrepreneurial journey in 2009.

A buyer who can embrace this business, its community and continue the legacy.

When questioned by Bsale whether they need to come from the food industry, the owner shared;

“I didn't come from a food background; I was just passionate about food.”

I think that is the key to owning a delicatessen. You need to be passionate about food and business.

Interested buyers, should make contact with the listing agent. This is a genuine sale of a very unique business in Victoria.

Unless sold prior, Expressions of Interest will close at 4 pm on Wednesday, 22nd of February 2023.

OVERCOMING ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY IN 2023

Continued economic uncertainty continues to dominate the business landscape in Australia. However, as businesses begin to recover from the challenges faced over the last three years, they now need to prepare for a potential recession in 2023.

A recent survey by GoTo and OnePoll found 79 per cent of Australian business owners believe one will occur in the next 6 months. Amongst this chaos, businesses need to ensure employees feel unified with the business through economic challenges.

HONESTY THROUGH UNCERTAINTY

The consequences of the last three years have led to a series of supply chain disruptions and labour shortages, spiking the cost of living and disturbing the economy. This has had a significant impact on the way we work.

GoTo’s survey found that 56 per cent of business leaders felt COVID-19 has impacted the way employees now work and act in 2022. Furthermore, 41 per cent cited inflation and the rising cost of living as affecting employee choices with working.

Ensuring employees are connected to the organisation during economic uncertainty can be difficult so there needs to be a focus on transparency and strategy in how budgets are utilised. Businesses that remain open and honest with employees during economic instability will reduce insecurity and instability among staff.

Communicating effectively and clearly across a range of channels about business updates, regularly checking in with employees about their well-being, and seeking feedback will build a united workplace.

BUILD A BARRICADE AGAINST CHALLENGING BUSINESS CONDITIONS

Demonstrating to employees that the business is taking the right steps to future-proof and unify against economic instability brings peace of mind to employees.

Many businesses are taking actions such as to prepare for economic uncertainty.

To add further stability, businesses can look to save 3 months' worth of profits as an emergency buffer, diversify business cash flow and consolidate their technology stack.

THE RIGHT TECHNOLOGY IS INTEGRAL

Technology is pivotal for businesses to future-proof employees during economic instability.

Eighty-four per cent of Australian business owners believe ensuring employee devices are working properly is vital to be prepared for future issues, which coincides with the fact 71 per cent of employees are now updating employee devices annually.

When businesses utilise the correct technology for employees, it builds a higher quality work environment, and brings ease to

work operations, reducing stress and further futureproofing the workplace.

A variety of factors will continue to impact the economy. As businesses prepare for an economic downturn, it is critical that business decisions relate back to unifying employees with the business.

Transparency is vital, and by effectively utilising the business budget to implement the right technology, improve morale and be future-proof against recession, businesses can ensure their employees and organisation is united through economic uncertainty in the new year.

BEST INDUSTRIES TO ENTER IN 2023

Say goodbye to the COVID-19 pandemic! The world has been slowly but surely opening its borders, relaxing its restrictions to enable the entire population to move freely with less fear. So has Australia. We have live events start to gain steam in 2022, with 2023 promising to bring back jampacked happenings nationwide.

Outside of live entertainment, the country has started to open its borders to tourists. From 6 July 2022, travellers entering or leaving Australia need not provide evidence of vaccination. Local travellers are also more relaxed about visiting other states for a holiday and maybe visiting loved ones from other states.

More relaxed restrictions also mean that businesses are free to operate at full capacity with no hindrances to operations. Import-centric industries are also freer to welcome more of the products or raw materials that they source from overseas to boost operations. Collaboration, especially in-person meetups with experts, may have a boost as foreign experts visit the country to collaborate with local professionals.

While the groundwork for businesses across most industries has already been done, there are

a select few market sectors that may set themselves apart from the rest. These are the following:

TRAVEL AND ENTERTAINMENT

2022 saw the revival of live, inperson events, such as expos, conferences, seminars, sporting events and concerts, among others. Global events include the Australian Open, the FIFA World Cup, the Academy Awards and Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris. More relaxed restrictions, as already mentioned above, may bring many foreign tourists to Australia. As such, inbound tour operators in Australia are expected to grow at a spectacular 4,280% from 2022 to 2023. Online travel bookings are also anticipated to grow at an excellent rate of 84.5% over the same period.

of approximately $100 billion per annum. While the hospitality industry has faced challenges, increases in travel and tourism are projected to drive significant industry growth. Keys to the sector’s success are its ability to provide excellent customer service and create a welcoming environment for its guests.

HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

One of the largest industries worldwide is the hospitality industry, being one of the world’s largest employers. Locally, this sector generates significant tax revenue

Success in hospitality is projected to trickle down to the education sector, specifically from Maurice

international students seeking world-class training and instruction.

BUSINESS SUPPORT AND SERVICES

Due to the multitude of different businesses opening and changing hands, it has become paramount for owners to distinguish themselves from the competition. Expensive media marketing and advertising on print, radio and television are now long gone. Instead, marketing engines that are fully owned and controlled with minimal fees are now trending.

Examples of trending marketing methods are social media, SEO and content marketing. Different operators may be ill-equipped to generate traffic using the said methods and will need the support of marketing firms operating in the business support and services sector to guide the way forwards.

Growing operators that see an avenue for expansion may need additional capital to act on their growth opportunities. Many have tremendous potential, but few have the resources to push through. Here comes the venture capital industry, which can make equity

investments and provide cash for business owners looking to expand.

TECHNOLOGY

Technology is a very broad market sector that trickles down to almost all other industries. Trending in recent years is the focus on robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality, among others. Robotics and artificial intelligence show tremendous pressure to make life easier for everyone by assisting with mundane tasks. Augmented reality and virtual reality may give everybody a new form of entertainment and aid in lifestyle choices.

Assistive technology for the ageing population may also be a popular trend in recent years. Elderly individuals and the disabled may benefit from increased mobility, whether in the comforts of their homes or out and about in the community. Improvements in assistive technology may enable the elderly and disabled to have a better quality of life.

The automotive industry may also benefit from improvements in technology as the world tries to minimise its carbon footprint. Electric vehicles are beginning to trend worldwide, with not only trending automotive brands releasing fully battery-powered automobiles. Traditional manufacturers are also starting to introduce electric vehicles to the global market.

HEALTH

The COVID-19 pandemic has made people more aware of their mortality and their need to prioritise their health above all other concerns. Aside from traditional healthcare in the form of medical check-ups, the health industry has started to introduce novel services in which the public may be interested. Included in these novel services are genetic testing and stem cell therapy to treat and prevent various medical issues and concerns.

Cryo-banks may also be on the rise, especially with individuals who want to collect and store their genetic material for future use. Natural health therapies are also on the rise as people look for a better quality of life without resorting to aggressive medical treatments.

REFUGEE TO BUSINESS OWNER – A BUSINESS MENTORING SUCCESS STORY

P. 0401 349 481

E. erica.jones@mmj.com.au www.mmj.com.au

Building a life of purpose, participating in community, and having a sense of belonging can be elements that we easily take for granted – these are things that take place over time, often subtly without us realising it is happening. Our support structure is frequently invisible, growing organically through new connections, events, and learnings.

Life is challenging, but we often assume that everyone has equal access to tools of selfempowerment and independence, but this is not always the case. People from refugee backgrounds have often experienced trauma, significant upheaval, loss and months or years of uncertainty

before arrival in Australia, and once in Australia, they are faced with the added complication of having to navigate the practical and personal challenges of starting a new life, often without that all-essential support structure.

SCARF, a refugee support service, established in the Illawarra in 2005, by co-founders Sharyn and Kel Mackenzie, was created to facilitate a range of targeted programs tailored to directly help refugee entrants overcome barriers and build a secure, vibrant life in their new home.

The service is about creating connections, generating opportunities that build a sense

of belonging and promoting social and economic inclusion. It is, at its core, about empowerment.

Today SCARF has over 2100 community members registered with them, representing nearly 400 households. Most have been out of their country and living in camps or other desperate conditions for at least five and, in some cases, up to 20 years. Over 150 volunteers work now with the community through SCARF’s varied programs.

For MMJ Wollongong’s Business Sales team, this seemed like exactly the right type of organization to work with.

Refugee entrants often need to overcome multiple barriers

to gaining employment. The capacity to start and effectively manage a micro or small business can function as a gateway into further community connection; decreasing isolation and helping them to embed themselves and their families into a new, positive way of life.

Business Sales offered their consultants for holistic and strengths-based one-to-one mentoring opportunities with individuals who were registered with SCARF and in the process of starting up or managing a small business.

This program was dynamic, first gauging the mentee’s needs and then developing support mechanisms to further assist in managing those processes. This took the form of individual sessions and has continued on an as-needed basis.

Justin Bunt, Business Sales Consultant, described it as a dual

learning experience ‘I learned a lot; every mentee had a different business and a different approach to managing that business.’

It also related directly to his core purpose as a business sales consultant.

‘I enjoy getting to understand anyone’s business – it can be a way of sharing best practices and wisdom gained from our dayto-day engagement with other business owners – and in the end, we know that this will have a real, practicable, positive impact on an individual’s work life.’

Martin Lo Surdo, who still meets with his mentor regularly, finds the process itself incredibly rewarding and satisfying; ‘I get to help someone and be part of their network – their support system. It’s an incredibly brave and vital thing – to leave one’s own country and embark on a new life in another – if the least I can do is assist in a small way to make that

process easier – then it is well worth it.’

The results are tangible too. ‘Focusing on practical solutions to everyday business dilemmas has shown up in increases in sales and customers and revenue’ This in turn helps build confidence and gives the mentee value in real-time.

For an organisation like MMJ, the concept of utilising a triple bottom line approach as an accounting framework (looking at 3 parts: social, environmental, and economic), is not a new concept. What this does do, however, is ensure that the focus is on more than just financial impact, allowing teams to look for more unique ways to put back into the community.

Assessing performance as an organisation from a broader perspective gives the impetus to look at unique and diverse opportunities (like this), that are community focused and builds value in thoughtful ways.

The Business Sales team are looking forward to this program continuing in the coming year.

SCARF is an essential and vibrant community program and you too, can help refugee entrants in the Illawarra to rebuild their lives and establish a sense of belonging by joining their community of dedicated volunteers and supporters. BEECHWORTH SWEET COMPANY FOR SALE: SHARE IN THE MAGIC

P: 02 7228 0498 E: vanessa@bsale.com.au bsale.com.au

Vanessa is the current manager and CEO of Bsale Australia. Over the past 11 years as a business owner, she understands what it takes to grow a business. As a writer and contributor on Bsale, she wants to bring informative articles that can assist people in the process of buying or selling a business.

Nestled in the foothills of Victoria’s High Country is the historic gold-mining town of Beechworth. Favourited as a tourist destination just 3

hours from Melbourne and 40 min from Albury / Wodonga. People flock to the region to revel in the town's attractions.

With claims its “Australia's finest historic gold-mining town” Visitor Information, you can step back in time to experience the goldmining era.

Offering one of Victoria's best historic gold rush experiences, Beechworth is “one of the most popular tourist towns in North East Victoria. It got a lot going for it” shares agent Dallas Lodge.

“Heritage and natural attractions. Good accommodation and a great holiday destination”

EXPERIENCE THE JOY

When heading on an Aussie vacation, stumbling across a sweets shop in a tourist town it's like all your dreams have come true.

“Visitors remark that entering our store reminds them of a cross

between Alice In Wonderland, Aladdin’s Cave and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Sweet Company

With 4.5 stars and over 250 Google reviews, customers share the joy of visiting this iconic store.

“Another must if you visit Beechworth is to stop at the lolly shop and get your sugar sweet fix. The kids enjoyed the wide selection of lollies. The staff were friendly and polite” Peter Lowden

“A really delightful place with so many choices!!! Ended up buying locally made rocky road and chocolate-covered coffee beans. The shop set-up is gorgeous and welcoming as well. A must-visit when at Beechworth” Marta Tesoro

This 30-year-old business has been an icon in the town of Beechworth with many tourists ensuring they return.

“10 years ago I walked into this

39

store on a week-long school music excursion and was blown away by the range. I recently revisited this store and I was not disappointed. They have a massive range of confectionery - both imported and local” Adam Lichoudaris

GOOD THINGS COME IN TWOS

Beechworth Sweets Company was established in 1992 and later In 2016, the owners set up a second store in Mansfield VIC. You can experience the joy of the tourist trade in this relatively simple business in two locationsBeechworth and Mansfield.

The current owner is transitioning into retirement and offering this very unique opportunity.

“Sales like this don't come across people's desks every day. It's a pretty niche business. The location of the businesses, longevity, long lease and genuine progression to retirement ticks a lot of boxes” agent, Dallas Lodge shares.

“The current owner used to be the bookkeeper for the previous owner. Then she purchased the Beechworth business 8 years ago”

Mansfield was established in 2016 and continues to see “year-onyear increases in sales”.

This business has proven to be stable and successful for its owners. It is now ready for the next generation.

SIMPLE AND SWEET

This business is relatively simple to operate, with minimal onsite food preparation. Its focus is on customer service, product sourcing, team management and sales.

“This business is easier to run than say a bakery” Dallas Lodge

“The fudge is the only product that is manufactured in-house and accounts for about 5% of their products. The rest of the products are sourced elsewhere”

“They have good supplier relationships and have got everything down pat to the products they source. It’s a relatively simple business to operate because of that”

With trained and experienced staff in both locations, it's primed for transition to a new owner.

This a genuine sale as the owner is approaching retirement age

WHO IS THE PERFECT BUYER?

An iconic business in a tourist town - needs to remain just that to continue its success.

“The business is relatively important for the town of Beechworth” Dallas Lodge

“In my opinion, it could be someone from Beechworth or within close proximity such as Albury/Wodonga or Wangaratta. Someone within an hour's drive”

With the owner currently transitioning out of the business. It is the perfect opportunity for an investor or someone locally to acquire the business.

“The business continues to see year-on-year growth”

“The owner is now working in the business 3 days a week”

“Really healthy turnover and bottom line. To the point where it could be bought and managed by an investor from afar, whether it be Melbourne or elsewhere”

With the growth in online sales and eCommerce sites, someone with experience in digital marketing could drive online sales even further.

The business is already profitable, but every buyer wants to know ‘what more can I do’ and this business is primed and ready for further growth, especially online.

“There is an online presence. But it’s probably something a buyer could look at increasing and pushing up sales”

NAILING BUSINESS AWARDS IN 2023

Let us count the ways. There’s so many ways to promote your business, it can be overwhelming. Working out the best tactics to get your business in front of prospective clients, so they know who you are and what you do, can take as much time as actually doing the work.

After publicity, there is no greater social proof than business awards. Why? Because business awards allow you to showcase your expertise and accomplishments by having them judged by an impartial third party. Third party credibility is incredibly powerful.

Words have always intrigued Annette Densham. From the moment she could hold a book, she loved nothing more than immersing in stories of adventure and mystery. When it came time to choose a career, it was a natural pathway for her curious and creative mind to venture into the world of media, where her inquisitive nature could delve into other people's stories. With over 30 years in media, corporate communications and public relations, Annetter loves nothing more than asking lots of questions to uncover the incredible stories out there.

But if you are in business, your number one job is marketing. You may be in law, HR, sell a great product or have the best service on the planet, but if no one knows about you, you are just shouting into the wind and hoping someone hears you.

Working out what people want from you is another stumbling block. How do you get cut through? In this world that demands more and more social proof, a great tactic to add to your marketing mix in 2023 is entering business awards.

Human beings make decisions based on emotions. Yes, having a powerful brand presence certainly helps - a great website, insightful content and appealing brandingbut awards give a little oomph to your messaging.

Think of your marketing, including business awards, as bread crumbs you are dropping. These bread crumbs go a long way to building know, like and trust for those who follow you or discover you through all your marketing efforts. The human limbic system - the place in our brain that manages our emotions - drives buying behaviour. You can tap into that

with your marketing… and awards.

But like all marketing, you need a strategy. It is not enough to enter, make the finals and win. You need to align the process with your key messaging, ideal audience (what will float their boat to buy from you) and your goals and objectives for the year.

It all starts with a plan for success.

CREATE AN AWARDS CALENDAR TO HELP WITH PLANNING

Winning starts with not leaving the entry until the last minute. Instead of flying by the seat of your pants, spend time planning an awards calendar - find out the open and closing dates so you can plan your time and manage your resources, review the criteria so you know what the awards are looking for, and collate the information that will support your entry claims.

It’s obvious to judges when someone has rushed the entrythere are typos, spelling mistakes, and lots of hyperbole to cover the fact that their submission has little substance.

GET ORGANISED TO MAKE THE PROCESS SMOOTHER

‘Prior planning prevents poor performance’ is not just a naff saying people pull out to make those who are unorganised feel inadequate. There's a sound time management sense to this saying.

After you have created a 12-month awards calendar so you know what is coming up, you can create an awards black box - a folder on your computer or Cloud drive to collate and file anything and everything to support your award claims.

Go back through your diary/ calendar to take note of deals won, podcasts, interviews and other aspects of business you have achieved in.Google yourself

and file all media wins and other third-party credibility pieces.

Reach out to clients/ customers for reviews and testimonials. Develop case studies of successful projects or client work. If you make a habit of filing this information regularly, when the awards open, you do not have to wrack your brain trying to remember all the things you have accomplished during the award’s timeline.

SPEND TIME REVIEWING THE QUESTIONS

Comprehension is also a valuable skill for those who want to walk away with an impressive trophy. This means read the questions over and over to ensure you clearly understand what the judges are looking for. The category criteria will also be a dead giveaway of what will make your submission rise to the top. As you write your answers to the category questions, keep going back to review, asking yourself if you have answered them succinctly, clearly and with substantive evidence or proof.

Once you are happy with your answers, proofread and edit because glaring mistakes can count against you. If you are going to spend money or time or both on this process, making sure you have followed the instructions is key.

RESPECT WORK AND TIME LIMITS

Understanding and sticking to word or time limits (if submitting a video) can make or break your entry. Nothing screams ‘disrespect’ more than someone who waffles or goes over the limit. Limits are there for a reason. Respect the judge’s time. Respect other entries who stuck to the limits. If you do go over the limit, re-read the questions and review your answers because you may have repeated yourself or not comprehended the question.

Ignore this at your peril, because if you do the judges will put your submission to the bottom of the pile.

DON’T MAKE CLAIMS YOU CAN’T PROVE

In many awards, at the end of all the questions, is the opportunity to upload OPTIONAL supporting documentation. Here is your chance to give a little more information to support your entry. Most awards have tight word limits, and it is hard to convey 12 months of achievements in a few hundred words.

The support documents are your chance to validate, substantiate and qualify your claims in the written section. Say you have achieved a 100% business growth in the past 12 months, the support document can include graphs of your financial growth monthon-month. Or you have helped several people improve their offerings, the support document can highlight case studies and data insights on how you did that.

GO FOR THE WIN

Making the finals or winning awards all comes down to a few very simple and easy to implement actions.

Given the time it takes to enter an award, or the money invested to get someone to do it for you, it’s worth it for the third party credibility awards given, the PR opportunities, and the business that will come your way because people love doing business with a winner.

COVID FUELS GROWTH FOR BRISBANE PRINT STORE CELEBRATING 20 YEARS

1300 993

Global supply chain issues and pandemic-related printing needs have delivered strong growth for MBE Brisbane CBD as the business centre chalks up 20 years of operation.

Under the leadership of American backpacker-turned-business owner Chris Ryder, the enterprise – now one of the highest performing MBE stores in Australia – has recorded 200 per cent growth since COVID’s emergence.

“The pandemic prompted significant demand for business printing, both COVID-related and general advertising, and the shift to working from home saw an uptick in demand for mailbox, virtual office and courier services,” said Mr Ryder.

“Global supply chain issues also saw many companies return to local printing to counteract untenable delays and stay agile in an ever-changing environment.”

the centre, having just migrated to Australia from California.

A 27-year-old high school dropout with limited design experience when he arrived Down Under, Mr Ryder needed to study to stay in Australia, so decided to pursue graphic design at TAFE.

He excelled and, by April 2007, had landed his first Australian job, beginning work at MBE Eight Mile Plains

in the Brisbane Technology Park.

It was there, while working in production and graphic design over a number of years, that he learned the ins and outs of the trade.

“The store started breaking sales records really quickly and I learned a lot about business, customer service and sales from my boss, Neil,” Mr Ryder explained.

“I was taught to never say no to a client and to under promise and over deliver, both of which remain central to how I work today.

“It’s also important to empower your customers and teach them how to save money on printing, because that makes them more likely to succeed.”

From his early days as a general MBE employee, the father-of-two worked his way up to become MBE Queensland State Manager.

He turned the Brisbane CBD centre around within months of taking over, and has managed six other MBE centres, helping them to scale up their operations.

“If you’re prepared to work hard – and as an owner, you should be prepared to work twice as hard as your employees – and are dedicated, you can run a successful small business,” said Mr Ryder.

“It’s critical you learn to be resilient, not to fear failure and to face your challenges head on.”

MBE chief executive officer Clayton Treloar said MBE Brisbane CBD was

a great success story.

“Chris’ ability to stay responsive to a changing economy, with the support of MBE’s head office, and deliver exceptional customer service – and products – are key to his success,” said Mr Treloar.

“He’s an incredible example of how owning a franchise can help transform a career and a life and we’re thrilled to see MBE Brisbane celebrate 20 years of operation in 2022.”

Now, after seven years at the helm of MBE Brisbane CBD, during which time he’s employed more than a dozen people, Mr Ryder is not slowing down.

“I expect the increased demand for domestic printing services to continue as businesses return to normal post-COVID,” he said.

“I think the pandemic has reminded many companies of the need to have trusted relationships with local suppliers.”

And, believe it or not, Chris is already thinking about the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

“That’s going to be a phenomenal time to be in business and we’re looking forward to working with our clients to help them make the most of Brisbane’s big moment in the world spotlight.

“I just feel really lucky to be able to have been given the opportunity I have here in Australia and with MBE and to be able to have given so many people jobs already, and I just want to pay that forward.”

Founded by Rod Young in 1983, the Australian end-to-end consulting, legal, recruitment and brand and marketing firm was created to assist entrepreneurs from start-ups and SMEs to NGOs, government bodies and large corporates to develop sustainable franchise networks.

MELBOURNE MUM LAUNCHES START-UP DURING COVID-19 CRISIS AND A PERSONAL HEALTH SCARE

Emma White faced monumental health struggles on her way to successfully launching her range of plant-based sausage rolls into Woolworths stores nationally.

Remarkably, the launch was undertaken during the turmoil that was the 2020 COVID lockdowns in Victoria. As the founder and consultant of Food Specialists, Emma was already ‘flat-out’ in her thriving consulting business, assisting her clients in the Food Manufacturing industry, supporting Australian manufacturers in the challenging endeavours to supply food, in the retail market.

With the news of the COVID lockdowns, school shutdowns and her clients facing intense stress, the pressure cooker of life was

set to maximum. Her husband Ashley was working in his day job at the time and his role required attendance at work. In the chaos of home schooling, managing COVID crisis talks as a consultant and planning the launch of her new start up The Why Meat Co. needless to say, something had to give.

While at home, Emma unexpectedly suffered severe pain in the head and was quickly rushed to hospital for scans and treatment. Hours later, drugged up and in immense pain, she was diagnosed with severe head trauma with a dangerous condition that had the potential to take her life, namely a Subarachnoid Haemorrhage on the brain. This is an emergency condition in which a blood vessel ruptures near the brain

and causes internal bleeding. Due to the serious nature of her condition, she was rushed to the specialised neurological ward at the Austin Hospital, the day after being admitted to emergency at Box Hill hospital.

Extremely painful, this illness requires the patient to undergo many brain scans and tests, including weeks of monitored supervision in a specialised neurological ward. Mostly on her own, with nurses as companionship, visitor restrictions kept family visits to a minimum.

Emma was warned by the leading neurologist that patients with this condition were often incapacitated for weeks. The nurses were amazed when she was sitting up from day three. Her release from hospital was fast-

tracked with strict instructions. Miraculously she was picked up the day of her daughter's 7th birthday, testament to a mother’s will not to miss her girl’s special day.

Informed that full recovery can

venture to supply the largest retail chain in the country and adding to these stresses, financial leading to businesses was drying up therefore The Why Meat Co. had to be fully self-funded. On top of all this, Victorian parents were obligated to become teachers in a home-schooling program. As they say, this was the final straw and took an immediate toll on Emma’s health.

Three weeks after being released from hospital, and still in recovery mode, she receives the news that her plant-based sausage rolls under The Why Meat Co. brand had been accepted by the behemoth, Woolworths Retail Group.

Gluten Free product pulled out of the manufacturing contract, citing massive disruptions to business operations.

This meant Emma and her team had to urgently search for a new supplier that could meet her strict product quality and quantity supply standards. With travel restriction in place, this search was limited to the local Melbourne metro area, as interstate travel was not an option.

A crossroad moment, to say the least, and a monumental decision had to be made! ‘YES’ she can supply Woolworths or ‘NO’ it’s not possible to proceed with the COVID-19 restrictions fully in place and Emma’s health, taking its toll. With total commitment to delivering on her promises to Woolworths, Emma simply said ‘let’s do this’! Ash her husband resigned from his steady day job and the family put everything into making the start up a commercial reality.

COVID-19 created casualties along the way and a month before The Why Meat Co. products were set to be stocked into Woolworths stores, their supplier for the

With all hands-on deck, problem solving a ‘no supplier’ issue from every angle, The Why Meat Co. explored all avenues and pulled off a deal at literally the final hour, comprised of two weeks of intense fast-tracked negotiations. The Why Meat Co. was able to deliver on its contractual obligations, in-spite of all the external obstacles and personal drama that was 2020.

The team delivered above and beyond, even extending on the original agreement of 608 stores, increasing store ranging to over 900, for their Wheat Pastry Plantbased Sausage Rolls.

Emma’s advice for business owners, specifically in the food sector, to tackle the year ahead is to try and localise as much of their production as possible.

“When food production and supply is kept as local as possible, communities benefit economically from the increased employment opportunities. This also reduces the chance of extreme weather or staffing shortages that may be happening far away having such an intense impact locally,” says White.

opportunity - they are already established!

“The franchisor has been successfully running them as corporate-owned stores for many years and is now ready to offer them to dedicated new owneroperators to improve and take them to the next level.”

These franchise locations have lease agreements, sales histories, forecasts, staff and much more. Walking into an established franchise location can give you a higher level of predictability than a new site.

That is the vision of Howards Storage World. To find

“Someone who has a passion for retail and wants to be part of a group that's going to help them and nurture them and give them the best chance at succeeding.”

As a 25-year-old franchise group, they know what it takes to be successful.

Full training and continual support are offered by the franchisor. With innovative training programs and marketing, they are passionate about the success of their franchisees

“Be supported with group strategic

and tactical marketing initiatives. A multi-channel campaign calendar including digital and traditional elements is provided including store signage packs to build group wide consistent activity.” Howards Storage World Site.

With a large team of franchisors, they welcome interactions. Which means you won't be going it alone.

“Come together with other stores at National Meetings to share intelligence and draw on the camaraderie and support of others in the group.” Howards Storage World Site.

As we welcome in 2023, buyers are looking for opportunities. To change their current careers, and become business or franchise owners.

The term ‘buy yourself a job’ has been thrown around a lot in the past couple of years. The idea is that you can be an owner and reap the benefits whilst also having employment.

With a franchise opportunity like this, you can see the current wages, income, expenses and forecast what you - as an owneroperator - could earn.

When questioned by Bsale on the next steps, the listing agent shared;

“I have an IM [information memorandum] I can provide and answer any questions buyers may have. Then move forward from there.”

To find well-established franchise locations on offer, at varying price points, is a rare opportunity.

To take the next step, enquire with the listing agent.

LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR EMPLOYERS MANAGING REMOTE WORKERS AND DIGITAL TEAMS

has been growing over the past few years, although more so out of necessity then by choice. There are many reasons why people and businesses are choosing to work from home, including: flexibility in hours, better commutes, improved work/life balance, and the improvements in digital communications that facilitate this.

remote staff or digital teams. This trend is set to continue into 2023, so if you are having difficulty in adjusting to the digital office or are unsure of your legal obligations, this article aims to help.

advice, workplace, and dispute resolution.

Working from home is becoming more and more popular. It is a trend that

COVID has undoubtedly led to increased remote working for most businesses. The "new normal" has pushed for flexibility, even in the face of major disruptions. The challenges that come with managing remote staff include maintaining the same levels of productivity that occur when you work face-toface, ensuring as an employer the same standards and terms of employment, and putting in place systems, processes, and check-ins to manage well-being.

This was definitely more challenging for employers who were not used to managing

Here's a short guide for employer’s legal requirements when it comes to managing remote workers.

Not everyone has the same tech skill. Training, support, and equipment must be provided to remote employees to ensure task completion and high cybersecurity standards. Providing company phones, computers and secured emails are good ways of doing this. Encrypting confidential info is

essential, especially if employees are working from home.

Use two factor authentication (2FA) for private logins and restrict emails to internal addresses to protect sensitive or confidential data. All this will help safeguard information if any device is compromised and prevent errors of unauthorised viewing of sensitive data.

2. MAKE SURE ALL REMOTE WORKERS HAVE A SAFE AND HEALTHY WORKING ENVIRONMENT

As an employer, remember you still have a duty of care of your employees. That's hard to monitor when they're remote. You should do your best to check on employees and ensure they are working in conditions that are equally safe and comfortable to that of the office workspace. Ensure safety and providing ergonomic chair, mouse and setup is common practice.

Keep an eye out for signs of poor mental well-being like decreased engagement with digital communication, or not responding to work matters for extended periods. Engage employees with socialization and regular communication as much as you can.

3. LIMIT REMOTE WORKERS TO 8-HOUR WORKDAY

Remote workers are entitled to the same working hour restrictions and reliefs as regular employees. If your employees are subject to longer working hours, it could result in the need for special compensation. The legal limit of working hours in NSW is set at 38 hrs weekly. Any work provided over this 38-hour weekly cap would require employers to pay at least 1.5 times an employee’s hourly rate. Or in lieu of overtime pay, employers are obligated to offer time off.

4. PROVIDE APPROPRIATE LEAVE ENTITLEMENTS AND BENEFITS. YOU ALSO WANT TO AVOID BURN-OUT

Employers must respect & fulfill legal requirements for remote workers (e.g. leave entitlements, benefits, & superannuation) the same as in-office workers, incl. vacation time, sick pay, parental leave, & protection from unfair dismissal. Employers must also maintain regular office policies & resources for remote workers experiencing stress.

5. MAKE SURE ALL REMOTE WORKERS ARE PAID THEIR FAIR WAGES ON TIME.

Australia's minimum wage is $19.84/hr and applies to both remote and in-office workers.

Employers must comply with the Fair Work Act and ensure remote workers receive the same entitlements, such as overtime, public holidays, etc. as in-office workers. Per the National Employment Standards, remote workers must be paid for any work done on public holidays. Check relevant awards as well to ensure compliance.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

Consider legal requirements and provide guidance for employees working from home, such as tips for maintaining a work/life balance and up-to-date insurance policies. Also, use the ATO's simplified method for calculating additional expenses, and utilize collaboration tools for digital communication like Monday, Asana, or Slack.

A 'Working From Home Policy' is a really good idea as well to set the standards for conduct and reporting, confidentiality, security and laptop use etc.

6 BUSINESSES FOUNDED BY KIDS

Entrepreneurship trends are on the rise not only among grownups, but also among children. With more and more parents venturing to start their own business, kids experience the stock stored in the garage and around the house, parents working their own hours, frustrations when things don’t work, and celebrations that come with every milestone of the new enterprise.

In fact, entrepreneurship is recognised as a fundamental skill to thrive in future work. As a parent and a teacher, I see huge potential of empowering children to learn about business during school years. As a business professional, I believe that kid entrepreneurship has amazing power to ignite a spark of learning beyond the classroom and connect school subjects to real life.

And while commercial education is not a part of most school curricula yet, there are children who venture, challenge and come up with creative solutions at a young age. With parent’s involvement and supervision, these kid businesses are a great example that everyone can make a difference, no matter how old they are.

As we move into 2023, the digital world will continue to expand and grow in importance. Keeping up with the latest developments in digital transformation can be like swimming against the tide. However in this whirlwind of change, it is vital for your business to stake its claim and put forward a strategy that embraces digital.

When it comes to technology, there has been exponential growth in ecommerce, supply chain management and virtual meeting adoption. In all of this, businesses are working out how to layer in a more agile digital

marketing strategy that cuts through the noise. There has been more of a focus on content marketing with an increasing number of brands focused on driving traffic, as well as generating leads and conversions.

One of the key pillars in a content marketing strategy is search engine optimization (SEO). Not only does SEO help with enhancing the quantity and quality of traffic, but it also helps with increasing visibility and connecting you to your target market.

Infact, SEO is being reborn through digital transformation as more and more people use

digital platforms to find content, information, products or services.

Here, I’ll cover four things you should do to boost your digital presence in 2023.

1. OPTIMISE FOR VOICE SEARCH

With the introduction of voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa, brands are finding innovative ways and strategies to take advantage of this opportunity.

There are multiple aspects to voice search optimization, but one of the most important is to optimise for more conversational types keywords/search phrases. Previously, you may have optimised for the keyword ‘chiropractor suburb’ which is a variation of keyword + location.

Now, voice searches tend to include phrases like “where is the nearest chiropractor to me”, or “who is the best chiropractor in Sydney”. By integrating local keywords and conversational phrases in your optimisations, you have a better chance of showing up in search engine results pages for voice searches.

Optimising for voice also includes:

• Ensuring your Google My Business / Maps profile is set up, optimised and has positive customer reviews

• Using schema markup

• FAQ pages and FAQs published to main service or product pages, using words such as; Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How

• Ensuring your website is mobile optimised, as most voice searches occur on mobile devices

2. REPURPOSE YOUR CONTENT FOR DIFFERENT CHANNELS

Repurposing your content involves recycling content and transforming it for various channels. For example, you can turn your long-form video into short videos, snippets for social media channels, or even a blog post and article. By doing so, you will be able to reach different audiences that have different preferences in consuming their media.

Other ideas include creating podcasts, turning it into an infographic, creating a social media thread and more. When it comes to creating content, it’s important to prioritise evergreen and popular content, timing its release, and using attractive visuals to give your content the best chance of being shared.

3. OPTIMISE YOUR WEBSITE AND IMPROVE USER EXPERIENCE (UX)

A successful SEO content strategy is built upon the fundamentals of SEO, so it’s vital that you’re optimising your site. Some important SEO optimisation strategies to consider include:

• Ensuring that your layouts are mobile-friendly

• Optimising for page speed as well as load times (via GTmetrix of Google Page Speed

• Insights)

• Optimising metadata

• Ensuring that there isn’t duplicate content on your website

With the above, you’ll not only be

able to ensure that your user has a good experience while they’re on your website, but it makes your content accessible on mobile.

4. KEEPING UP TO DATE WITH GOOGLE’S GUIDELINES

With Google constantly updating its algorithms, major updates can have a significant impact on SEO and content strategies. Google’s most recent ‘Helpful Content Update’ in September 2022, for example, is an example of this. With AI content growing in popularity, this particular update by Google was designed to prioritise people-first content and devalue automated content.

While it’s hard to tell what other algorithm updates Google has planned for the future, it’s important to stay abreast of updates so you’re able to have a good understanding of why your content isn’t performing as expected.

This means only following ‘white hat’ SEO tactics, focus on quality content, don’t engage in spammy SEO tactics and put the customer first.

WRAP UP

While some of these items have been essential to SEO for a number of years, in 2023 these are my top areas to focus on. Every brand and business wants to have a strong online presence, and by following these tips, 2023 may be less of a whirlwind and more of a stable ride.

Camy’s Is Rapidly Expanding Its Franchise Model

Camy's Chargrill Chicken is ecstatic to announce they are opening up their next store in Macquarie Centre, New South Wales. They plan to have the store up and running by November 2023.

The brand is rapidly expanding and plans to open up 2 new stores in the next 6 months (St Leonards and Macquarie Centre).

The fast-food and takeaway food industry is valued at $20.2 billion in 2020-2021, and is projected to reach $21.9 billion by 2025-2026, expected to grow at 1.6% over the next 5 years.

DC Strategy partnered with Camy’s Chargrill Chicken to launch the franchise sales and recruitment campaign in 2021 in search of entrepreneurs looking to successfully launch and grow with a franchise network across Australia.

Camy's Chargrill Chicken is a quickservice restaurant delivering its passion for food through chargrill chicken, salads, burgers, wraps, drinks, and delicious artisan products with hush-hush ingredients.

They also provide local catering, tailormade and adapted to each person’s every whim, ensuring delicious delights for their catering requirements which means any theme can be coordinated. Camy's Chargrill Chicken has a tasty menu that has been transmitted by former ancestors with their delightful delicacies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The family restaurant opened in 2016 as a hub for the Founder’s family - a safe space to work, have fun, and share good food. Founder Cameron Khilla wanted to create a happy place and built the restaurant’s foundations on ensuring a positive environment for everyone for the staff, suppliers, and customers. The brand has now expanded to 5 locations in New South Wales.

Founder Cameron Khilla is excited to be taking the brand into new cities.

“We’ve always believed in our product and are excited that we will now be able to share our happiness and passion with more people while spreading our flavours and traditions in more places,” he said.

James Young, head of franchise development, comments that the high-end chicken shop continues to be a desired franchise with which people are keen to partner.

“Camy’s Chargrill Chicken brings a new era to the casual dining food space and paves the way for a young generation of franchise owners. Cameron has built a successful business operation and created a humbling work environment for his family and staff while in his midtwenties!” - James Young.

The popular hospitality brand invests in technology to further enhance its business model. They have just acquired self-ordering monitors, which will bring down wage costs and increase speed during the ordering process. In the first week, the uptake of customers using these monitors was at 30%, and Camy's plans for that percentage to increase to 50-60%.

DC Strategy is Camy's end-to-end partner in Australia, New Zealand, and Asia with our Hong Kong office supporting this next growth phase.

FOR SMALL BUSINESS IN 2023

As a small business owner, having your finger on the pulse to take advantage of trends and innovation is key to remaining relevant. In 2023 we'll see a continuation of the need to be digitally advanced, and suppliers in the health and wellness industry, as well as those who support other businesses, will see strong demand from consumers still looking to capitalize on the lessons learned during the pandemic from 2020 through to early 2022.

In small businesses, the key to success will be your ability to remain flexible, particularly around the changing needs of the workforce. Employees are demanding greater workplace flexibility and the ability to better balance their time between work and how much time they have for play. If you haven't considered it yet, as an employer, you must start to consider the benefits of flexible working arrangements like a 4 Day Work Week or a 9-day fortnight.

These aren't just concepts for the big corporates, they are for small businesses too. Given it costs more than one year's salary to employ and train a new hire, can you really afford for anyone on your current team to quietly quit because you didn't offer the flexibility they were looking for?"

The year of 2022 has left its mark on a lot of Australian businesses. Having Covid running rampant has forced many businesses to reconsider how they engage with their customers. Consumers are starting to realise the value of local businesses as well as how good it is to be able to order products and services from the comfort of their living room. With that in mind businesses in 2023 will need to reconsider how they market their products while ensuring that they have a decent online presence.

My advice would be to:

• Revisit your main products and services through the lens of a digital environment. Whatservices can be shifted to an online format to better cater to the needs of customers.

• For any events consider running the event for an online audience as well as just a physical audience.

• Its time to revisit your websites design and organic SEO to ensure that you are performing inthe local search results. People are starting to value local a lot more these days.

• Its time to revamp that google my business listing to ensure you are showing up in the local pack for your key services.

• Last but certainly not least make sure that website of yours is mobile friendly. If Covid has taught us anything its that even when stuck at home people are still using mobile devices over computers.

In summary my number one top tip for small businesses in 2023 would be to get your butt into gear and double down on your online efforts. Even after Covid people are reluctant to attend events and shop in person as they have grown more comfortable with purchasing online.

However this does not mean that regular businesses can prosper in potentially difficult economic outlooks, this is actually the best time to start any business. An economic slowdown is a huge opportunity for multiple reasons, when there are large layoffs as we are seeing in the tech space in the USA it now means a competitive labour market will favour smaller businesses, as unemployment increases staff who were being paid well above the productivity they produced will no longer be able to find a job paying as much giving opportunity for smaller businesses to pick up the great talent they can afford.

At the same time as larger companies lay off staff, and reduce their service and capacity, the bureaucracy and inefficiencies of being large can no longer be masked by large demand. This means that a small enterprise can really come in, undercut a larger company, provide a better service to the end customers and really grow. The other positive around downturns is that marketing costs and lead costs can drop as many traditional businesses cut marketing expenses first when revenues drop leading to a lower barrier to entry for many businesses that usually wouldn't be able to get their name out there in a booming economy where most marketing channels are saturated bringing the costs right up.

Know Your Numbers!

A consideration at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds as we move into 2023 is the Reserve Bank’s recent series of interest rate rises, a trend that is expected to continue into the new year and beyond. As such, business owners may find themselves impacted, not least of all at a trade or revenue level, as customers spend less with them and on a more infrequent basis, but also on a personal level, as business owners find themselves needing to extract more money than usual from their businesses to meet increasing loan repayments.

Since it can be too easy to take more money from your business than your business can support, it is critical to keep up-to-date with your numbers. If you don’t know what’s happening financially, you won’t know if you’re still making money or not; what business activities or sales items are or aren’t generating revenue for you; and/or what you may owe to creditors and staff. In addition, if you’re extracting more cash from your business than usual, you’ll likely be hit with associated tax consequences. For business owners already struggling to make ends meet, a larger tax bill than normal is the absolute last thing they need.

The good news is that your accountant is typically well-placed to provide you with the insight necessary to identify any concerning trends that may be emerging in your business well before things get ugly. They should always be one of your first ports of call when things start changing.

What trends do you think we will see in 2023?

First, I anticipate that more businesses will adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technology. As AI becomes more sophisticated, it will enable businesses to automate tasks, improve decision-making, and gain insights into customer behaviour. This will give them a competitive edge in today's rapidly changing marketplace.

Second, I believe that sustainability will become a top priority for businesses of all sizes. From reducing energy consumption to investing in renewable energy sources, businesses will need to find ways to operate in a more sustainable way if they want to stay ahead of the curve.

Finally, Personalisation will be essential - In a world where consumers are bombarded with choices, businesses need to find ways to stand out from the crowd. Offering a personalised service is one way to do this, as it shows that you care about your customers and their individual needs.

My #1 tip for being successful in 2023 as a small business owner is to embrace technology.

Keep up with the latest software and hardware developments, and find ways to incorporate new technology into your business. Whether it’s automating tasks, communicating with customers online, or using data analytics to make better decisions, staying ahead of the curve will give you a competitive edge. And in today’s ever-changing world, that’s more important than ever.

Email marketing has never been a more important tool in the small business owner's toolbox.

When you’re running a small business in Australia, both your marketing budget and your time are limited resources. Sometimes, it makes sense to focus your efforts on one specific marketing channel rather than several, but that begs the question: which is better, email marketing or social media?

While social media is the new darling of the marketing world, email is still king when it comes to customer acquisition and generating sales. Don’t get me wrong, social media is definitely a valuable tool in your marketing toolbox, but if you’re trying to generate revenue, nothing beats email— and it probably never will.

Our audiences have never been separated as they are currently due to the natural order of events and how social media has become a weapon of misinformation.

If as a small business owner you want to ensure the survival of your business, you have to own your own audience.

I suggest using email marketing when you’re looking more for reach, traffic and direct conversions, with clients that will pay, stay and refer.

Email marketing far outperforms social media in terms of reach and open rates. Higher conversion rates - Email marketing drives more conversions than any other marketing channel – including social and search (according to a report by Monetate).

That being said, if you really want to make the most out of limited resources and email, try to integrate and coordinate it with your social marketing efforts— your ROI might just go through the roof.
