Water, what’s so special about it?

WATER, WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT? Written by: Wanda Elliott, EBMS

Why is maintaining a healthy mouth so important? Have you had your share of water today? I had my share! Water is essential to our diets. It keeps us alive. It is beneficial in many different ways. Some of the benefits are: 1) Hydration, 2) Detox/Elimination of Waste, 3) Weight Loss. The body needs to constantly stay hydrated so that the organs can function properly. Problems can occur if the body does not get the proper amount of water. Water helps to eliminate waste by carrying the toxins out of the body by sweating and elimination. It also helps prevent constipation. For many, weight gain comes from intaking too many calories, not exercising, and not drinking enough water. For others, there could be a medical factor involved. For those with no medical issues, try taking in less calories and drink more water. You will be surprised how much of a difference that makes. But for the record, the Mayo Clinic staff said, “The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day” (Mayo Foundation, 2010). http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/water/NU00283

9

A key to maintaining a healthy body is to make sure your mouth is healthy. Many diseases within the body start because the mouth was not properly maintained. Bad breath becomes noticeable because of poor maintenance. Have you ever talked to someone that had bad breath? It’s not very entertaining is it? The mouth houses millions of bacteria that can grow out of control and destroy delicate bone and tissue in the mouth. Disease of the gums is called “Periodontal Disease”. The teeth can become decayed and the disease can spread through the bloodstream. Once the disease spreads through the bloodstream, it can affect various organs in the body leaving it vulnerable to other types of diseases. Brushing, flossing, and also cleaning your mouth with a mouthwash are very important parts of maintaining good oral health, but it is important to visit a dentist twice a year. I have attached links to some sites that explain various diseases regarding poor oral health. Those sites will also will help you prevent various diseases by good oral health care. As always, seek professional dental advice and service for optimal care. Darrin McLaren

Rising From The Depths of The Underground

DARRIN McLAREN

BIO

RISING FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE UNDERGROUND, McLaren has always had a passion for great music. Although being in progress of a professional basketball career, his music has always seemed to tip-toe into a public view propelling him to be one of Hip-Hop’s up and coming future stars. Darrin McLaren, a multinational Hip Hop/Rap artist, launched from the uncompromising inner-city of Detroit, Michigan. While growing up in a rugged environment, McLaren not only enjoyed playing musical instruments (such as the drums and violin), but turned to writing poetry. At the age of 10, he was already writing and performing in Detroit’s local talent shows. McLaren’s musical talents caught the attention of his family and peers, while simultaneously developing an uncanny ear for other genres such as Pop, R&B, and even Classical! Rarely do you find a person of McLaren’s stature who triumphed from many adversities, and continues to display extraordinary skills in his music. Currently, Darrin has completed his highly controversial mixtape “ILLUMINATI’ Hosted by DJ Young Mase from the super DJ powerhouse Aphilliates Music Group. This mixtape is being played in 5 different countries and has several features/remixes with MAYBACH MUSIC, YOUNG MONEY ENT, and 13

Royce Da 5’9; and has been produced by those who have worked with the likes of Gucci Mane, Rick Ross, Ying Yang Twins, and Flo-rida! With treacherous metaphors and mind-mangling wordplay, McLaren definitely has what it takes to become an international star! Not only does his charm and charisma tends to captivate the minds of his fans, his mere stage presence is like none other! Standing at 6’ 9’’, Darrin has the power and energy to secure the attention of every individual in the audience! Keep your eyes and ears open for Darrin McLaren as he continues to use his gifted talents to create and produce GREAT music for the masses!

Interview with Paulette Carter PC: What artists influence you? DM: Many influences for my music... I grew up on rap music...but transferred tastes to classical, country rock and roll...my primary influences are Jay Z, LL Cool J, Tupac, Cassidy....however I love artists such as Corrine Bailey Rae, Int’l. reggae artist “Mighty Tolga”, Flo-rida, and Pitbull. I do my best to continue making that “MCLAREN” sound, so I stay listening

to artists from different genres and regions. I plan on venturing more into classical/rock and roll...I’m already writing music for artists in those fields....... PC: Why is music important to you? DM: Music is extremely important to me! It is my venue to ventilate negative and positive energy!! It helps keep me a sane individual....also the music I make relates to other people and that relationship is an aspect I cherish. It feels good when people give comparisons to other artists who are successful. PC: As an up and coming artist who was your biggest support system and how did they support you? DM: As an up and coming artist, my biggest support system comes from my family and my music team, “CFL Music Group” (Conglomerate of Foreign Legions). I have people involved with our music process from over 5 countries, and their opinions help push what singles will receive the most investments. My mixtape “Illuminati” was hosted by the Aphilliates DJ Young Mase. He is on tour with rap group “D12” and has continuously promoted my songs in the countries he has toured to. Germany, Australia, the You.K., Belize, Costa Rica, Finland, Canada are a few countries involved. My business partners, Shane Smith and Keith Neil, have contributed to my success in the music business. Also super-producer, “Dahru Garner” from Atlanta, has contributed to the success of our music! He has worked with the likes of T.I, Tony Braxton, and TLC. PC: If you could describe yourself in 3 words what would they be and why? DM: If I could describe myself in 3 words, I would 14

say: Resilient, Relentless and Exclusive. Resilient, I’m from the inner-city of Detroit and have successfully received a world renowned education, been all over the world, played professional basketball, and have given back to the youth! I’ve made a terrible situation transform me into reaching the perfect position. Now, I have to keep striving. Relentless, My work ethic is impeccable! I am continuously learning my craft and I won’t stop until I get to where I need to be! There are 2 reasons why people fail, either they don’t have the information, or they do have the info and don’t push themselves the way they should. I am a person who pushes himself to receive the correct information to stay on top. Exclusive- the “McLaren” is an exclusive vehicle it represents my style my way of life. It represents where I want to be in life. The pinnacle, the zenith, everything important is paramount! Making sure my family is taken care of is paramount... failure isn’t an option! PC: What advice would you give to our youth as well as other up and coming artists? DM: Advice- I would tell the youth to never let anyone stop you from achieving your goals. I would say that in order to be successful. Your education should be a primary asset in any profession because it separates you from the masses. Your knowledge is definitely power. I would also tell the youth to capitalize the gift God has given them. Everyone is given one gift, and that gift can help you live a stress-free, positive, and fun life. Work isn’t work if you’re having fun with something you love to do! Keep striving to be the best at everything you do. Failure isn’t a bad thing, it’s actually positive in a sense because with every failure comes a lesson, and lessons learned help prepare you for the life you’re headed to live! Take every situation and use it to your benefit!!!!!!! Be

you, be fly, be fresh MCLAREN! PC: What makes you passionate when it comes to music in general, whether it be your own or another artist? Is it the lyrics, melody, beat, the artist..? DM: Music comes from everyday experiences. My journeys from the inner-city to trekking to international countries. I try to talk about things my people haven’t been around, try to bring something new to the table. Usually, my passion comes from the many emotions I may be feeling at the time. For example, if I’m mad, I can’t write about love songs, or happy songs. I would have to write about things that are making me mad and what I can do to put me in a better place, and writing definitely puts me in a better place. I love R&B. My favorite artist would definitely be Marvin Gaye. His catalog has definitely got me thru the worst times. So, the lyrics, melody, beat, and creativity he brought to music helps me to strive for a better sound. My life is what makes me passionate because I have been blessed to do some things my peers haven’t! I am my inspiration, GOD IS MY INSPIRATION! PC: How do you feel about old school music? Who did you grow up listening to that might have inspired you at a young age? DM: Old school music is the best! I grew up listening to the Whispers, Marvin Gaye, Wham, Aaliyah, and many others! I have an impeccable collection of music vids I gathered on YouTube!!! Lol. Old school music had a message that was undeniable! You could listen to a happy melodic tune, but if you listen to the words, some of the worst sh*! could be happening...people are so infatuated of how good the music sound that they forget the message, lol. The perfect album for this “Here my Dear”, by Marvin Gaye. He recorded an album so the profits would go to his wife, lol. He literally bullsh*! thru the entire album to get the IRS off his back, facing bankruptcy! The tunes are great, but the messages are disguised with his 15

turbulent relationship! Inspiration wise, I loved LL Cool J...wanted to be just like him, love his style, the way he got women, lol..... he was the first artist I ever studied....and I’m happy because he had an extremely long career so hopefully, that will rub off on me! By the way one of my favorite shows of all time is “IN THE HOUSE” with LL. They need to bring it back! PC: How do you feel about the music today as far as it having no valued meaning like old school music? Do you think it will continue to be this way or will it only continue to go downhill from here? DM: The music today is still going strong! I can’t say the same about hip hop, however other genres are producing great music, you have gospel (Deitrich Hadden), techno/pop (Black Eye Peas), reggae (Mighty Tolga). I feel that the music in our genre suffers because 1) anyone can create and produce music thru home studios, and 2) the majority of the artists in hip hop approach the game mixing the process of making money while creating music. So you tend to hear a lot of the music watered down, you tend to hear a saturation of dance music, and you tend to see that the love for hip hop isn’t as strong as once before. Artists try to throw bullsh*! music together for mere profit! No feeling, No love, Just money! -and it’s sad to see everything go downhill. That’s what NAS meant that “HIP HOP is dead”. I believe that hip hop will rise again when it starts to blend with other genres of music, rap/techno/ rock roll, house, Latin,........ The game went south when our beloved music turned to a mainstream effort! Now music is strictly for revenue purposes! PC: What is your goal as an artist? DM: This is the toughest question! I want to reach the masses. I began doing music for me. I had a talent and wanted to capitalize on it by writing my feelings! Fame and fortune are cool, however, those characteristics are last on my list. I began music writing how I felt about situations, I developed a relationship with my listeners, and as long as I can help them through the day with my music, then my goal is complete. My

music is literally an open book for people to get to know me, my faults, my failures, my successes, and my goals in life. My main goal is to help inspire the youth, my main goal is stay a role model for not only listeners but become an inspiration for other artists! I want my fans/listeners/supporters to have a relationship with me. Take me as I am or don’t take me at all! PC: Do you write your own lyrics and if so what is the inspiration behind most of your music? Is the meaning of your lyrics from a personal standpoint or do you write about everyday situations? Is most of your music influenced by fame or real life situations? DM: I write my own music. I may draw inspiration from music, a movie, hearing a composition, anything that may happen in real life. An artist from Detroit should have all the inspiration needed. The citizens see success failures, aspirations, dreams, a driven mentality, hustlers’ mentality to become something better. My lyrics are mainly a personal standpoint from me, however, I like to step outside myself and

write as if I am another person going through a particular situation. It’s almost like acting, however, I tend to watch what I say, because what you speak comes into existence. My music comes from being a student, a professional athlete, me being the only son, the big brother, an uncle, a leader.... I have many standpoints I can write from, and I know that I can draw a relationship from others who look up to me, who are looking with me, or people who have surpassed me... I want them to see my hunger. http://www.cflmusicgroup.com (artist website) http://www.youtube.com/CFLMusicGroup http://www.facebook.com/DarrinMclaren http://www.twitter.com/DarrinMclaren (FOR BOOKING) DARRIN MCLAREN Darrin_mclaren@yahoo.com www.cflmusicgroup.com 313.397.5527

Company Policies: Why are they important? the staff. With company policies there are many topics discussed, which are covered in support of eliminating the possibility of having law suits. The most common topics and definitions used in company policies are: the explanation of the company’s mission statement; the company’s expected outcome and goals; detailed information about the different job descriptions; dress code expectations; the definition of sexual harassment and what is expected of that employee; ethics and discrimination policies and policies that reflect being disciplined as a result of not following the company’s policies. These topics are addressed once employees are hired into the work place and each person is expected to abide by what was written or face moderate to severe consequences as a result. The consequences of not following company policies often result in verbal warnings, written write-ups, suspensions, and possible termination of employment. If there is ever a problem within the organization, each party can refer to the company’s policy to rectify the issue at hand. Employees need to know that company policies are put in place to protect them as well as the organization as a whole.

Company Policies: Wh y a r e they i m p o r t a n t? There are so many reasons as to why companies should apply the golden rule of establishing and utilizing company policies. For one, many companies develop a sense of structure once policies are created and put in to place. Company policies can be used as a guide to ensure employees remain focused as to the purpose and function of the organization. Company policies are looked at as a contract between management and line staff. Policies serve as the main line of communication among

David Taylor “Lyric” Bio Born on October 1, 1992 from Detroit, MI, Lyric’ has always been a fan of hip-hop ever since he was just a little kid. His dad used to bang artists like: Redman, Wu-Tang, Biggie, 2Pac, and Das EFX in his home, while his mother to played artists like: Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo ,so he has always been around good music. David has always been an admirer of music. At the age of 16 he bought his first microphone and attempted to write his first song for his girlfriend’s birthday. The song featured two raps by Lyric, gaining positive feedback for the raps but negative for the singing. This gave him the idea to improve his rhymes and start a career as a emcee. He completed 2 mixtapes before exposing his music to anyone. He then posted a song on Facebook to test his skills against people’s critiques. He gained a surprising number of positive comments and love for the song. Since then he has released 13 mixtapes and an EP which has reached over 1,000 downloads of his works. The Detroit emcee is now 18 and is ready for anything that comes at him. NIC PAPER Bio: Charisma is defined in Webster’s dictionary as “a special magnetic charm or appeal”1. After spending two minutes in a room with burgeoning rap artist, Nic Paper, it becomes evident that he possesses the charisma needed to charm the girls, and inspire the guys. As the first recording artist signed to “Chartcontrol”, an Atlanta-based production company founded by Isaac “Ike Dirty” Hayes III (son of iconic R&B legend, Isaac Hayes), Nic Paper is positioned for success with a powerful team to navigate his career in the music industry. Often compared to the likes of TI, because of his charismatic persona, Nic 20

Paper exemplifies the “It” factor needed to inspire the male fans to want to be like him, and the charm to entice the female fans to want to be with him. Nic Paper’s “pretty boy thug” appeal and rebellious nature adds his unique style to tracks on “Cash it or Plastic”, and the lead single of the same title, on Nic’s buzz-worthy street album made available to his fans for free on www.nicpaper. com Nic Paper sites TI, Jay Z, Gucci Mane and Nas as inspirations for their real and uncut deliveries, and is adamant that future fans will be inspired by him. “When the world thinks of me, I want them to think of genuine music, and get a feel for who I really am”. Nic continues, “My hood has never been represented properly.” The perfect look, the perfect sound, the perfect team, equals a lethal combination creating the perfect storm for Nic Paper

The Power of Planning and Making a List

© Emily2k | Dreamstime.com

Article

Melting Pot Media Inc. There is no denying that people go from day to day hoping that their big break will come and success will fall right into their laps. How about this, get a recipe for “Beef Wellington” and don’t follow the recipe. See how that turns out! Try coaching a football team using the same method. Just show up and tell everyone, “We’re just gonna play until we win”. See how that works out for you also. The point is, you need a plan or a list to get things done correctly, increase your success rate, and reach your goals. A working plan, list of goals, or objectives should not be just a thought. You need a working and editable plan or list. Your plan should be easy to access. Post your plan or list around your home or work area so it is always staring you in the face. It is very important that you can see exactly what you need to do.

22

This is also great for measuring your progress and physically seeing the fruits of your work. When you are on your journey, you don’t want to lose your way. There will be many distractions, possible set-backs, and hopefully some mistakes to learn from.

can over how others affect obtaining your goals or completing tasks. This is very important and many of you know why. People are people and that’s all I will say. The only person responsible for the success of your plan or completion of the list is you.

When you sit and make your plan, be realistic, and keep your goals obtainable. You should have two types of goals: short and long term. The short term goals will keep you aligned with your long term goals. Some goals may take years and others will come much quicker.

The most important thing to know about a list or plan is, anyone can use them and they can be used in many ways. Take control of your ship. Stop wondering the rough seas of life without navigation. Take the challenge: create your plan or list, work hard, and see where it takes you.

Don’t over-think your plan or list either. In the beginning keep it simple. Start with major milestones. You need to break them down so you can see what steps or processes need to be completed. Milestones can be parts of your plan or list that must be completed to move any further or be successful. Keep as much control as you

Tell us how a plan or list helped you in 500 words or less and you could have your story read by thousands and inspire others. Email us at: social@meltingpotmediaonline.com with the subject line “Your Story”.

Unfaithful

LeRhonda R Carter

You constantly lied on me and you used deceit to take my man While evidently already having him in the palm of your hands. I understand the need to be assured, But you fail to see his sickness which has no cure. Unfaithful to you, unfaithful to me, unfaithful to any woman is how he will continue to be. He doesn’t see any wrong in what he does. Why are we blind to his games? His actions aren’t based on love. I’m no longer emotionally attached. The game I play is a game of pay back! I know what he wants; I know what he needs, He comes out his pockets to pay me. I don’t have to pay for his attention. Don’t get it twisted. He’s not paying for sex Upon my shoulders is still the place he craves for his head to rest. You can never relate to the history we’ve shared. That’s why in his heart my mark is still there. So you now have him and him you can keep, But it’s my name he still calls while moaning in his sleep. He promised you he would never come this way again-this I know, But with every opportunity allowed,he still comes knocking at my door (doe). So buckle up your seat belt, you’re in for a long ride. He will continue to be unfaithful till the day he dies. LeRhonda R. Carter

Eternal Flames My heart feels the eternal flames. Un-thought out actions brought about this pain. Instead of doing what was right, we chose to follow our hearts. Though the relationship lasted 12 years on and off, it did fall apart. We both had taken one another through hell and back. I didn’t think anything could separate us after all of that. Five years later looking back on those twelve, I knew we loved each other but we were only thinking of ourselves. Not spiritually mature enough to seek God for truth, We only focused on what we wanted to do. We selfishly tried working together with care, Though we felt we were destined soul mates it couldn’t have lasted forever-God wasn’t there Each day it hurts me even more to know it could have worked If back then we were only wise enough to put God first, Since we can’t go back in time to make the change. My heart is cursed with eternal flames. LeRhonda R. Carter 35

“My Soul Cries” My soul cries And nothing I say can stop it. Only a word from you Two, three words... Those same three That we have uttered Time and time again If it is the last time Please say them to me now I have to know that “it” existed My soul cries for you And your love is its only tissue. “Bridge Crossing” He took it there. “Don’t cross that bridge!” He said. But I’m a rebel I choose my destiny I make my decisions I am - my brother’s keeper And so, I did it I crossed the bridge I took that step That leap That journey And as I struggle to find myself Know myself

Love myself I also find the power to do it Know it Love it And if in life There is anything I’m glad as hell I did It’s shoot a bird At his tired ass As my soul crossed over that bridge LaCrystal Jones

Day Dream Aah I’m chilling in my school desk, I’m not really listening to the teacher she sounds like a doofus, I never cared too much for History because the word “us” is fake but we’re known as the U.S, I’m tired of this so Imma sit here and Day Dream. I don’t need to use beds. I float off into another world, another time zone. I know this is only an imitation of the real like a rhinestone, This don’t make sense my mind’s gone, I’m always thinking on another plane, but it seem like that flight has flown. I don’t know what’s going on so I go up to a dude named Bob, He said he used instruments to start something beautiful like a band job. But he wasn’t talking about music, He seemed like he had some dirt I call him Germ-man like he repping Munich, He wasn’t in the military but his jacket looked like a tunic, I could tell he was bad news where’s Katie Couric. He told me how he killed some twins which led to more deaths, That made a whole country turn their heads so quick that it left them with sore necks, I think everybody got the point now after years of being scoreless. Those loss of lives led to Bombs Over Baghdad, That’s it Bob was an outcast who thought he was giving more protection than a sandbag. Ok Bob say no more I’ve heard enough, As I walk away from him I let loose a huff. *Sigh* *whew* that guy had issues, Next thing I know I’m saying my bad excuse. Me it was an older lady that went by the name Miss, I asked her why she just wanted to be called Miss, She told me how love was missing in her first kiss, She couldn’t walk her legs were missing like a worms is, She told me that her Prince Charming has always been missing because she always messed with Kermits, At birth life was missing out of her kids, Her name is Miss because everything is missing there’s no way to smooth it over she missing Jergens, Suddenly I get nervous, As I turn it’s. A tall and very dark man named Black, He literally looked like a shadow that separated from someone’s back.

37

I almost can’t stand to look at him like a train that derails, It’s weird this can’t be but it feels so real he has no details. No facial features, Just a silhouette of some evil creature. He didn’t say a word because he had no lips he was in need of collagen, But I could see words bleeding out of him. And the words say death needs life in order to live, A life must be taken in order to give. By this time the air is kinda eerie, I want to get out of here I wanna beat it like a drum that a ear need. I need to go I have to....then I start shaking violently, Then the black shadow swirls around and explodes silently. Everything goes white it’s like I’m going blind, It feels like no...there is no time. Then there’s a blur of color, Slowly there’s a distorted voice then I heard another. And everything focuses and I’m back inside the classroom, But it’s a steady low tone ringing in my head like a bassoon. Welcome back to the real world you were really gone, That’s what the teacher said but why do this world feel faker than silicone. What just happened that place seemed like the actual real world it’s unknown it ain’t mainstream, I don’t know if I want to but I wonder if I would go back there the next time that I Day Dream.

“When I First Laid Eyes On You” by Paulette Carter

When I first laid eyes on you, emotions I couldn’t control Thoughts filled my mind that sent a tingle through my soul When you opened your mouth and released your angelic tone, I caught feelings for many reasons unknown! The first time we talked was the start of something pure I now behold this addiction that seems to have no cure Even on your bad day you can’t help but look good The sense of warmth you provide and the comfort you give Surrounds my body and releases my fears Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually you are what I crave Getting dressed 2impress is all for you every day and even though you say it’s not needed I do it because it makes me feel complete and when I reveal how I feel to you and the world No one can say that I am an unfit girl… Making you happy is what I’m here to do The days we are away, I miss you like crazy and the days we are together I can’t help but to get lazy because, it’s an excuse to be closer to you, Being wrapped in your arms becomes so peaceful As we lay together while sleeping I feel so equal Not rushing into too much or giving too many 38

emotions Just wanting this to stretch out as far as the ocean! As our minds seem to bump and thoughts float all over the place Keep this one thought in mind…. I’m here to stay and wouldn’t want it any other way!

The Curse of the Pretty Woman By Jenisis A “curse” by definition is the “solemn utterance intended to invoke a supernatural power to inflict harm or punishment”1. This “pretty” is defined as an attractive thing, typically pleasing but attractive in a delicate way2…so, just what am I getting at? There is something that happens to “pretty women” while in a relationship. Let me introduce myself, I am JenisisOne. I am the only one like me, a fabulous creation of course. So why have I been single and why don’t I date? Well, men are different. People are different now. I remember when a dude would go all out to impress a woman. I remember actually being picked up and taken somewhere nice. Then I went on a date where after the meal, the man requested that I pay my half of the bill… $74.00! So, what happened? What did I do? What did he do? What made that date end up the way it did? It’s the curse…. (lol), the curse of being a “pretty woman”. Apparently, I was supposed to get a memo that it was a “Dutch date”. There is something that happens inside of a man’s head that tells him that if a woman is somewhat independent, she doesn’t need his support and/or help. I’ve had so many conversations with women about this subject. And don’t get me started on what the men said. One man told me that he doesn’t invest much in dates or relationships with pretty women, because they can always get a man. An-

41

other man expressed that he doesn’t approach pretty women in clubs, because they are attracting too much attention. Who is giving this sound advice? Who’s teaching men how to be men… when it comes to being with women? So, what’s the curse? It’s when the “Pretty Women” get the short end of the stick simply because we are pretty. What does that mean? That means we have the game screwed up. Men touch us when we are unwilling to carry a conversation with them. They stop calling after being with us and assume since we are pretty, we have men lining up outside our door. That is so far from the truth. I have cried many times from having my feelings hurt. I have been so upset by the disrespect and utter lack of shivery. So, what is the solution? –A magic spell to undo the curse.

Isaiah Anthony Ware Isaiah Anthony Ware was born and raised on the rough and notorious west side of Detroit, MI to a single unemployed mother and the absence of a father. Like most children he enjoyed a multitude of adolescent activities. Sports is his favorite, but music eventually became his dream and passion. During Isaiah’s musical career, he has released 3 albums: “Driven”, “Undadog”, and “Undadog Chapter 2”, all of which were written by him. Due to the demands from 44

fans, Isaiah recently went back into the studio to work on his fourth album which is untitled at the moment, but anticipation is mounting for the pending release. Like all artists Isaiah has many musical influences ranging from Michael Jackson to Tupac Shakur. Without a doubt Isaiah is “as real as they come”, never fabricating or compromising on the elements of his life, beliefs, or spirituality and openly admit sustainable truths in his lyrics. The Measure of a Man

Matt Hard w i c k : T h e M a n B e h i n d “T h e M e a s u r e of a Man” the st a g e p l a y a n d f e a tu r e d i n th e u p c o mi ng film, “C o u r a g eo u s ” i n th e a te r s S e p te m b e r 30 Introducing…Matt Hardwick, Owner and CEO of Matt Hardwick Productions, actor, writer and director of the stage play, “Measure of a Man” (which has taken theatres by storm). Matt opens up on how he got started in the entertainment industry. He also discusses his concept behind the stage play, and he gives advice to someone who wants to enter the industry. MPM: How did you get started in the entertainment industry? Matt: By embracing humble beginnings, what I mean by this is that I never shied away from small projects. From youth to adulthood 45

I got involved in every meaningful project wherein time permitted. Granted, most of the projects were small and had little if any budget at all. However, the small projects are what prepared me for when my season arrived. And, that season began via a phone call…I remember very vividly, it was a Friday afternoon and I was on my way to lunch when I received a call from my pastor. He informed me of a feature film that was shooting in my local area. He passed my number to the producer who later called me in for a cold reading. Fortunately, I got the part. As a result of working on that film I was compelled to devote total focus to excelling in the industry. I began

to write and my writing piqued the interest of a few celebrity talents who agreed to be a part of my productions. MPM: We all know that branding is a very important part of any business. What have you done to brand yourself? Matt: Right, branding is extremely important. In regards to branding, the first thing I did was develop a logo that represents who I am and what I represent...” Those who know me best can verify that I seldom make quick decisions. In fact, most of my decisions (Particularly regarding business) require several

days of thought and meditation. Therefore, when designing my logo, I chose to develop a man sitting in a chair apparently in deep thought. That’s who I am. My slogan correlates with that, “A thinking man’s productions” In addition, I strive to make my writing reflect the same. I put a lot of time and thought into my writings with the hopes of challenging audiences to think when they view one of my shows. In other words, I make a conscious effort to make my productions unpredictable. MPM: Who are the influences in your life and how did they influence

MPM: Have you ever encountered any barriers regarding “The Measure of a Man”? Matt: Absolutely! From the moment of conception, I’ve been in the fight of my life. However, I’m not easily rattled. I thoroughly understand that most worthwhile things in life don’t come easy. Therefore, I began this project braced for adversity and poised to deal with it. I think it’s vital that anyone seeking success beware that barriers and challenges are a part of the “success package”. MPM: Tell us a little bit about your cast. How were you able to assemble a crew of well-known actors? 46

your career? Matt: Without a doubt my greatest influence in my life would have to be my mother. She is responsible for instilling in me the values which have contributed to my success. At an early age, she saw great potential in me and worked diligently by challenging me to utilize every God given ability bestowed upon me. She made me feel as though I could accomplish any and everything I put my mind to. As a result (without one ounce of doubt) today, I truly believe that I’m capable of achieving anything I desire to do. Ad-

ditionally, the greatest influence in inspiring my entertainment career is definitely Dr. Daniel Simmons. He serves as my pastor, mentor, confidant and friend. Our relationship is what inspired “The Measure of a Man” story. Particularly in regards to how essential it is that older men mentor younger men in the evolution from male-hood to manhood. He also imparted in me one of the greatest tools anyone could give a young man seeking success. That tool is the power of belief! From the moment I shared my vision with him, he never doubted that it would come to fruition.

Matt: Well, this question has two answers…there’s a true answer and a political answer. First, the true answer…simply stated, “God’s grace.” I say this because it’s amazing to me that I was able to get exactly who I desired to cast. I didn’t have to settle for anyone. Those involved are the “perfect” fit for The Measure of a Man. That is made evident the moment the curtain opens. The audience will immediately appreciate the unprecedented chemistry. Now, for the political answer… I did my homework and prepared a professional, very detailed, and well written script. (Although I’ve labeled this answer as political, be advised that it has a great deal of validity) A great script is paramount to attracting veteran/celebrity talent. Most

The Cast of “The Measure of a Man” Stage Play well-known actors have been on the scene long enough to sniff out a bad script by reading the first few pages. If the script is poorly written, then chances are great they won’t get involved. MPM: What do you want people to experience through your plays? Is there a lesson to be learned or is it just for entertainment? Matt: First and foremost, I want the audience to experience a good wholesome performance that is suitable for all audiences. This is very dear to me because presently, there appears to be a great divide in the “family structure”. Furthermore, the 47

language and content of many projects seem to highlight or broaden that division. What I mean by this is that often times as parents, we can’t allow our kids to watch many of the shows we enjoy. Not that I’m oblivious to the fact that some “stuff” are just grown folks “stuff,” but equally important is the fact that we must get back to producing family entertainment as well. Therefore, I challenge myself when writing to develop content that families can view and enjoy together. I admit that sometimes that makes writing more difficult but it’s definitely rewarding in the end. It is my desire to produce meaningful projects. I will not produce any

project “strictly” for entertainment. Every production I do has to have a relevant reason for existing. Once I develop the reason, then I format my writing in a manner that will entertain, but it’s all about being meaningful FIRST! Example: the meaning and/or reason behind The Measure of a Man, is to inspire men to “measure up” and be the type of men we are supposed to be. Now there is a lot of humor embedded within the piece of work, but it all points back to men “measuring up.” MPM: Do you have any future plays in the works? If so, can you elaborate?

Matt: Yes, I have already completed the writing for the next production. After we finish touring this one, I’ll take a short break and begin the next. I dare not go into much detail because I don’t want to spoil the release. Just know that it is “Dyn-o-mite,” (In my “J.J. Evans” voice from “Good Times”).

Vacationing or Breaking is a Healthy Part of Rejuvenation and is Beneficial in Business By Wanda Elliott, EBMS I am sure you heard someone from time to time say, “I need a vacation!”. I have said those words myself on a number of occasions, but do we really need to take a vacation when we can least afford it or have work buried up to our ears and it seems as though we will never get caught up? Yes! Yes! Yes! We ALL need to take a vacation or break from time to time!

55

One of the most important reasons to vacation or break is to decrease the amount of stress that your body goes through on a daily basis. When the body is stressed, it releases a hormone called, “Cortisol” to aid in various bodily functions such as quick and elevated energy levels pertaining to fight or flight, increased immunity functions, and an increase in memory. 1 Although cortisol can be beneficial for the moment, prolonged exposure to the hormone can cause damage and weakness to the human body. Some examples of damage are: bone loss, muscle loss, decreased immune function, high blood pressure, and increased and unwanted body fat. All of those losses can lead to other major dysfunctions in the body. Another reason for vacationing or breaking is to stop the “auto-pilot” routine for a while. Sometimes, our bodies need time to reset. We are not machines, so we need to change course every once in a while. A change of scenery or doing something out of the ordinary can help. “So, what if I don’t have the time or money to take a vacation or break?” one may ask. There are ways to relieve stress and still function if you are on financial or time constraints. Helpguide.org, a non-profit resource, gives a wealth of information on how to lower job stress. The tips listed on the site are:

1. Recognize warning signs of excessive stress 2. Taking care of yourself 3. Prioritizing and organizing 4. Improving emotional intelligence 5. Breaking bad habits 6. Learn how managers and employers can reduce job stress (Helpguide.org, 2011) It is not necessary to be tensed when there are options that you can use to help relieve stress. A less stressed person makes a less stressed employee or business owner. A less stressed employee or business owner in most cases, help to make a company’s operations run more productively. So, take your vacation or nice long break. Your body needs and deserves it because if it could talk to you, it will tell you to TAKE A BREAK! If you do not take time off, your body will shut down for you. *As with anything regarding your health, you should talk to your doctor before you start any type of regimen. Scott, Elizabeth, M.S.. “The Lunch Dilemma” written by Brian

Pretty soon, a bill declaring that all/most kids will get free lunch money. This bill free up a whole new line of students who aren’t able to afford lunch at its normal prices and up the federal reimbursement for schools by 6 cents. Since all of these students are getting lunch more often, it’s become a nutritional matter. So, what they’ve decided to do is to change the school lunch menu so kids can get more nutrition throughout the day. This rule is for all schools and has been made a law. Prior, the republicans voted against this bill and put politics ahead of the situation just because they think it’s too costly (Steffan, Jordan, 2010). Aside from the political matters, I have to say kids hate it when they don’t have enough lunch money or forgot to bring some and all they get is a cheese sandwich! A Cheese sandwich, REALLY? What? Did the school go broke 2 seconds ago? Kids are charged $2.50 for a meal EVERYDAY! “Oh I’m sorry, you don’t have enough lunch money? Well, I got a surprise for you! You can eat BREAD AND CHEESE for all we care. You know what? We won’t go through the trouble of at least putting ham in the middle!” NO, NO, NO, NO! Not A ham sandwich, but a cheese sandwich! At least you get milk with your cheap little sandwich. WHAT ABOUT THE LACTOSE-INTOLERANT? You might as well pack a lunch! I am so sorry for the kids who go to school and can’t afford breakfast, after a long tedious work-filled 3 hours, just to wait for cheese and bread. Are you serious? Kids can’t work like this. If every 63

student paid $2.50 at school on the same day and there are at least 900 kids in school, they would generate $1750 a day. Instead, they are giving less fortunate kids those nasty little dry sandwiches. Unbelievable! Really, this just a horrible thing to do to kids. What happened to, “They’re the future of America?” Hold on a second. I think I’m having a flashback from that Kraft cheese commercial! “KRAFT, THE AMERICAN CHEESE!” Someone forgot to include the public schools in that slogan. This is the BEST cheese that I have tasted and I recommend that they at least use this cheese when serving lunch food. That’s not the only problem with the food. What’s with the bread?! It taste like if you took dirt and mix it with flour. There is seriously something wrong with the way that bread tastes. Did the people who made this type of tasteless food lose their own taste by smoking? Can we at least get some bread with a good flavor to it like honey wheat. What about the rolls that are made in Hawaii? Those are really good! Now, the only other problem with the food is the fruit. It’s not big a deal, but can they at least have fruit that tastes fresh? The fruit tastes like it comes from a can. Other than that I’m okay with the food that’s left on the menu. It’s pretty decent. “Losing Creative America” writen by Rosalyn

There is a major issue going on in the schools all across the country. The creative classes are slowly being taken away. I know that some parents might not care about this issue, but your kids care. If there are no creative classes in schools anymore what do you think will happen with our future generations. Painters will disappear; musicians will disappear; and singers will disappear. All of that creativity will be gone and the way life is now won’t be like that in the future. People won’t be creating new music and art. They will only be remembering how art and music use to be. If not for creativity, we would not have the technology we have today. If the schools continue to take creative classes away, we will not be able to continue to be competitive in the age of technology. It will be like we are stuck in time. Kids need creativity in schools to keep them going and striving. There are already kids dropping out if schools because they are bored and feel that there is a lack of relevancy in education. I don’t even want to think about how many kids would just drop out if all of the creative classes disappear. Some kids only go to school for that one creative class they love because it’s their passion. Taking away those classes is like taking away their chances of doing something with their passion. A man named Richard Florida says in his book The Flight of the Creative

Classes, “Wherever talent goes, innovation, creativity, and economic growth are sure to follow.” Also if you think about it, if the U.S. continues to remove the creativity, then what do you think the other countries will think of us? We will be the lower ranking country in the world because our progress will stop without creativity. Richard Florida also gathered information from 39 countries. He compared and contrasted the information gathered. Out of 39 countries, we rank #11. Just imagine what rank we will be when all the creativity is gone. That wasn’t even all of the countries in the world! While the government is worrying about budget cuts and removing creative programs from schools, the cuts are affecting more than the students. Without change, this practice of cutting creativity from schools will also have an impact on the future of America!!! We have gone from being creative to “planking” (click here) SERIOUSLY PEOPLE!
