Let’s face it! We live in a day where the music industry is always looking for something or someone new. It’s either looks, no voice, or voice and OH GOD! Not many come with the entire package.

industry. Unstoppable, phenomenal, inspirational and original are just a few words that describe Motown’s own 26 year old R&B star. Singing since he could talk, Connor has a long history in the limelight. A commercial print/runway model for brands like Sears, Kmart and Saks Fifth Avenue, Connor decided to follow his

true calling and passion – singing. He was blessed to have trained under the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and Gospel star J. Moss and tour alongside multi-platinum selling artists Diddy, Robin Thicke, and Cassie. Recently, Connor has shared the stage/ toured with Rick Ross, Bell Biv Devo, Fantasia, LL Cool J, Kelly

Al Green, Connor speaks on his passion. “Music is like medicine, it is a healing agent. It uplifts any mood and is filled with intense emotion. Life without music The younger cousin of one is purposeless. When asked of the world’s most influenwhy he didn’t wait for the tial singers, Roger Nelson, family musical torch to be better known to the world passed down Connor replied as Prince, Connor’s steady hands manipulate the piano. by saying, “I could’ve sat around and waited for the His sultry soulful voice is ear candy and resembles the torch to be passed but I didn’t wanna do that, I learned like of Chris Brown, Justin when you earn or work hard Timberlake, Dave Hollister and Neyo. I think it’s safe to say that Influenced by greats Sam his hard work has definitely Cooke, Donny Hathaway and payed off. Connor has been

busy putting the finishing touches on his anticipated EP “Who Is Elijah Connor” set to release Fall 2013. Connor was recently handpicked by Donald Trump to be a part of his new reality show series “The Ultimate Merger” with supermodel Tocarra Jones from Tyra Banks “Top Model”. Connor’s Style, Charisma, and Voice garnered him to be one of the viewers’ favorite, which allotted him a slot to make his cameo appearance on the big screen this in the remake of the movie “SPARKLE” starring the Late Queen of Pop - Whitney Houston. I’m actually working on a new show that I’ll be featured on as well as a few new projects that will be released in 2014. 5. A singer, model, and actor were all three passions of mine and I just tied them all together. 6. I’m often moving very fast from one project to the next. I have studio time here... I have a concert here and there and sometimes it’s hard to maintain a relationship. So right now, I’m just dating.

7. My generation!! My family had and has many great musicians, for example one of my family leaders in our family is the great legend, Roger Nelson better known to the world as Prince. 8. Neither.... It’s transitioning, everybody is trying to figure this thing out. The music industry is not what it was 20-30 yrs ago or even a few yrs ago. With technology advancing everybody is trying to figure out how to market their music differently. 9. Nothing in life comes easy. If you have a dream, work hard to make it happen. Stay focused and develop your craft everyday. Don’t let anyone limit you and don’t limit yourself. Anything is possible if you’re willing to put the faith and work together. 10. Yes, I have a community project launching in October, working on 2 new music projects including my album “Who is Elijah Connor”, new movie I just filmed , featured on a new reality show on WE tv and a 20 city tour as well.

PC: How long have you been rapping? P8tience: I’ve been rapping for a little over 10 years. I Started rapping during a jail sentence when I was 16 years old. I used rap as a way to funnel out feelings and emotions that I had been holding in and couldn’t get out Due to my friends not visiting.

my footsteps so it’s up to him. I have my own agenda but you know how that goes…lol we’ll see…something big though, in music and in the community. PC: If you had to describe yourself in 3 words what would they be and why? P8tience: Transparent. Honest. Relatable. At least I aim to be. Lol

PC: What artist influenced your career? P8tience: Tupac influenced my career the most because of his transparency and honesty to himself. When I write my records and tell my Stories, I write with that in mind. What Tupac did for me and so many other writers in general as well as people was make it okay to be yourself and to be vulnerable.

PC: If you had to critique yourself, what would you say your weaknesses are? P8tience: I don’t look at myself as weak to be honest. I have flaws like anyone else but if there was something, I would say not having a filter for the things I write or say on records. It gets me in trouble sometimes because if I feel it, I say it, lol.

PC: Who are your idols? P8tience: Whether it is in music or in life. I don’t really have a idol. I do study artists, and men that I admire or respect their craft or way of living. However, I don’t really idolize anyone. I’m truly God-fearing, so I always gel with those of the same respect for the Father. Ummm, I love Jay-Z’s ability and diligence to continue to push the envelope in music and hip hop, and of course T.O. for being able to allow his family to be apart of his career. I think it’s dope.

PC: What are you currently working on? P8tience: Well, I just finished up industry ready 2.0, so I’m currently focused on getting out to the public and hearing the reviews of the work. However, I’m always in the Studio writing, recording and creating. Probably the week before the release, I start meeting with producers on going through the pre production of phase of the last installment of industry ready called “Trifecta”…

PC: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? P8tience: ? I’m not sure…lol…it’s up to the Lord. I truly follow his Word to the best of my ability and I allow him to lead me and guide my career and order

Terra (AKA) Lady Te

Terra,

A timeless talent whose lyrical creativity will inspire a nation and generations to come. This is the era of Terra aka Lady Te. It is her goal to become a voice for every person who ever had a dream. It is her heart’s desire to mirror the thoughts of her peers. She uses her personal life experiences combined with the experiences of those around her to create music that people can listen to, identify with and be encouraged by. Though she is young in age, she is wise in spirit and knowledge and is no amateur. Terra began rapping in 1999 when TLC’s “No Scrubs” was on the charts. Six years later, her admiration for her favorite performer, the late Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes, has kept her focused on the bigger picture. This is a picture that is framed with the courage of self expression. Industry insiders say that Terra carries that same strong, defiant sound and attitude that “Left-Eye” was famous for. “I like her style and she didn’t care what others thought of her,” says Terra of Lopes. “She expressed herself and in my heart, she is my big sister. She inspired me in many different ways. Her music and spirit will live on through me.” 30

A fearless firecracker whose presence is unmatchable. Once you hear her music and see her perform live you will become a believer. Her charisma emanates through her music and arrests you when she’s on stage. She’s captivating and her lyrics whether fun or serious are intelligent and stimulating. This is what sets Terra apart from her counterparts. She is a star. “The music industry needs more young female rappers, “says Terra. “I keep it real. I write my own songs and I write from my heart when I’m happy, said or

lady and I can’t say everything that I want to say so I express myself in my songs.” It is this sincerity, drive and determination that is currently propelling her to higher heights and catapulting her career to new dimensions. Terra’s vastly growing fan base is extremely loyal as she has become a staple in her hometown of the Motor City, Detroit, known to many as…. Motown. Her list of accomplishments only confirms that she is a seasoned professional and that her experience in the industry has groomed her into becoming the polished, passionate artist that she is.

The Biography Of

The Biography of Darrin Patterson ~Things have come full circle… When researched in the dictionary, the definition of the “Destiny” means; “a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power or agency…” Now, take a moment and think about what this term could possibly mean to an individual who aspires for greatness. Then imagine how some use this phrase and embrace

every aspect of all that it means to them - as they venture through various open doors that God could have only opened. Some choose to use the word ‘Fate’; which they believe ultimately guides them through life to their present state as they encounter various experiences along the way, be they good or bad – yet still shaping them into whom and what God called them to be. Both terms so gracefully

Darrin Patterson and unequivocally correlate and more so is what led Darrin Patterson to this predestined moment in time. Destiny, but more importantly God’s will, are also two of the many reasons he is where he is today. Thus, the summation: The music ministry of Darrin Patterson is birthed and ready to take the Gospel world by storm. ~The History… It wasn’t by happenstance, but by purpose that Darrin was asked to minister in a musical in May of 2000. By this time, his experiences included; singing in church for years, singing in weddings, and in several groups. Wherever he stood, quite frankly you’d find him singing something. The common question frequently asked of him was “Why are you working here?” As he experienced singing in numerous events, it was something different about this particular Musical in 2000 that would be the catalyst for things to come. He wanted to represent himself for this event with a choral and after a several grueling practices there was an awesome move of God the night of the musical. Reluctantly he called himself Darrin Patterson and Friends (it would later be changed to Darrin Patterson & Promise). It was noted that as he and his group would travel ministering in different parts of Michigan that they were anointed, having a sound that could almost be compared to some of the popular gospel artists heard today. Unfortunately after an up and down journey with Promise, the group disbanded in 2008. ~The Voyage… Darrin continued on traveling to different parts of the world singing and ministering at numerous major venues as well as singing background for such well known gospel greats as Fred Hammond, Mitchell Jones, Lexi and many others. It was once prophesied to him that his music would touch many lives all over the world. He has always believed God anointed and gifted him to reach the nations through his music. ~The Sound… There is a unique sound and anointing that rests upon the movement of Darrin Patterson’s ministry. He has been groomed to have his own sound. However, if to be compared to anyone in the gospel or contemporary praise and worship music arena, such names as Israel Houghton, Fred Hammond and Tye

Tribett are just a few some would compare this phenomenal praise and worship leader’s sound to. His production, writing, and arranging abilities are yet being discovered and realized. They will soon catapult Darrin into a category all of his own ~The Present… Patterson has gained a wealth of knowledge in the music business, life, and ministry. He is definitely ready to make a long lasting mark in the music world.
Here are some of his professional duly notable achievements: Fred Hammond’s “Just In Case You Missed It And More”, singing “Heart of Mine,”
Motor City Mass Choir’s “Revival in the House” produced by Fred Hammond, he co-led “Revival Fire Fall”,
Lexi’s “Praise In The Valley”, BGV’s and
Fred Hammond’s “Purpose By Design”, BGV’s and
Mitchell Jones’s “Re-commissioned”, BGV’s. Darrin is excited about hitting the gospel music scene with his latest debut single, “Love You Forever” off of his highly anticipated freshman album entitled “The Road”. This projected hit “Love You Forever” is on the rise and receiving some great local rave reviews. A national recording status is definitely a dream of his, for which he prays will soon come to life. His prayer is that his un-wavered passion for music and writing songs that are full of life, love and hope will also soon be heard and sung throughout the world just as it was prophesied to him years prior Twitter: @dpeezy75,

DJ BJ Interview

Photograph by Shropshire

PC: What was it that made you want to become a Dj?

BJ: Becoming a Dj was a hard decision

for me. Choosing between doin a life dream or taking the route of going to school and getting a college degree like everyone else does. Had a very deep talk with my family and decided to follow my dreams and take on a career with a challenge. I first thought about djing when I found out how much I loved music. The way it makes me think, the way music makes you feel and puts your mind into a different state that you didn’t know you had. Then when I found that djing was more about just scratching a record and making the club go side to side. It took my mind to a whole new level and make me realize that djing and the opportunities that come along with it have a lot to do with life.

to promote, so I promoted myself hard and go my buzz heavy for a person who was not on radio. I ran into Shorty Da Prince while I was in the club one night and it was 4 floors with 4 djs and for some reason, he stopped on my floor and we kicked it for a minute. He seen something in me and from there we linked up and the rest is history.

PC: What was the first event you ever turned tables “Dj” for?

BJ: My first event was a

party at a hall and at this time, Big Herk was very hot. It was my worst event ever. I blew my speakers, and I had a book full of cd’s, lol. I knew I had to start some where.

PC: What djs influence your

passion and inspire you to continue to help take over the world through music?

BJ: Dj Drama has a big in-

fluence on me, just knowing that he came up off of hip hop music and knows that the streets is how a lot of music starts. I brought Dj Drama in town for my B-Day party and I kicked it with him and he told me just to stay on my grind and make sure you put on for your city. That might not have been a lot said, but those few lil words meant a lot and has taught me to keep doin what I’m doin and any-

BJ: My biggest support system is my family

PC: If you could describe yourself in 3 words what would they be and why?

BJ: 1. Blessed 2. Focused 3. Patient PC: What advice would you give to any and PC: Aside from being a Dj, we know you are

an artist. Which talent did you pursue first? Did you start off being a Dj, then you decided to make music yourself or was it vice versa?

BJ: I never wanted to be a rapper. I thought

all inspired up and coming djs as well as artists?

BJ: I would tell them to go with what you love.

If music is what you wanna do, then take music as far as it takes you. There will be people along the way that don’t want to see you go higher in life and move on, but use that as a mind frame. Competition is motivation. #3525

PC: What artists influence you? BJ: Artists only influence me once I meet

them, get to know them, and really learn about how they are as a real person. When you learn a person and how they really talk and learn how they really live, you get to know their music a lot more and then, that’s when they have an influence on me.

Detroit has not been on the scene as a major scale since Eminem and Big Sean has brought it back, and there has not been a major Dj out of Detroit besides my bro Dj Mo Beatz and I love him for what he’s doing. MUSIC PRODUCTION

BamOnTheBoards

BAM ON THE BOARDS In an industry where glory is praised on Entertainers, it is extremely rare to know the name of the “behind the scene man” who places the microphones, turns the pre-amp knobs, and sets the levels of your favorite records. In other words, when listening to your favorite top 200 single, can you say you know who is responsible for the physical recording of it? Well, welcome to Detroit, MI home of the 21-year-old 58

Audio Engineer who is inventively changing the Music Industry with his brand “BamOnTheBoards.” The buzz of this talented young engineer has expanded all over the Midwest from his credentials with Jay Beretta, NOSPEAKERZ, Kendall Day, and plenty other’s who all have grown to persistently request his work ethic. Musically and technically inspired by Manny Talk of Fame 101

Marroquin, a major sound engineer who has engineered for some of the biggest artists today BamOnTheboards likes to make every recording session a “magical experience” for his clients. BamOnTheBoards continued progression and proficiency of all different types of recording media (from computer knowledge to software and hardware expertise) has earned him his immense following and in high demand.

BamOnTheBoards Prior to adopting the name “BamOnTheBoards,” Bam was known as “Bam Kazaam,” because every client he had a session with felt the whole experience to be enchanting, enlightening, and somewhat of an ‘outof-body’ experience. There’s never a dissatisfied client of a final product engineered by BamOnTheBoards. Born Bookert Braziel on (August 24, 1991) BamOnTheBoards embraced and discovered his love for music through his pianist mother and father’s old soul, it was inevitable for this gifted musically inclined boy to purse music. “My earliest memory was of my aunt dancing to The Isley Brothers and the fact that I can still remember that very day, I gave away the rest of my life and musical future.” - BamOnTheBoards In high school Bam surrounded himself with “Music Heads” and friends Will, Jerald (Jay Beretta), and Kendall (Kendall Day) who ultimately encourage him to step outside the box. After high school, Bam and his friend Will both moved to Florida to attended FullSail University, popular for their music production programs. To be the best of the best in the field of Audio Engineering, one must have their

own sound, and after his college experience BamOnTheBoards definitely grasped his and opened his very own studio with that. Not many are aware that BamOnTheBoards initially started out as a DJ when he was a very young boy, which is what provokes his work to be much more diversified and distinct than others. Currently, BamOnTheBoards is working with long time friend Jay Beretta on his upcoming projects such as the highly anticipated “Target Practice” hosted by Hot 107.5’s DJ BJ and is set to be released on Bam’s birthday August 24th, 2012. With the love and support of his family and friends the future for this young engineer is bigger than he ! can envision, and there is no doubt that he will carry a reputable name and much longevity in his career. “I really have a shot at being successful in this business from the way people genuinely respect my craft, and I am blessed and humbled to be in the position that I am.” - BamOnTheBoards

Brandon “Rico” Simpson is a Detroit

music producer and graphic designer born November 5th 1991. Rico is also the lead producer and owner of Brandon Rico Productions a music production company. Rico specializes in Hip Hop and R&B beats but is also known for his rap, gospel and pop beats. Although it was his ninth grade year that he realized he wanted to be a music producer, he was making beats well before. 60

Like most children around 4 years old, Rico made music by banging on pots and pans. But the difference is Rico would layer sounds on top of sounds using merely a toy recorder. That’s when his dad, a local guitarist and keyboard player, noticed his musical talent and bought him his first keyboard. Rico started seriously producing local artists and making beats when he started Brandon Rico Productions in 2006. He launched his website BrandonRico.com in 2010 due to demand and to easily share his music to all. Rico’s sound is likened to that of Ryan Leslie, Bryan Talk of Fame 101

To this day, Rico is still making beats, performing and producing. Graduation is just around the corner, young people are joining the job market; the landscape has changed in preparing for their future. In the past, the government and employers often made financial decisions for families, for example by providing health insurance, defined benefit retirement plans and social security; now families are on their own more than ever. Are the new members to the workforce prepared for the challenge; how is financial literacy awareness increased in the workforce? Unsure, take a look at the disparities in figure 1, African-Americans are drastically behind in every category. However, there is a line of reasoning that the parents are responsible for teaching financial literacy. The next question is who will teach the parents? The idea put forward that the community at-large is responsible for teaching financial literacy. Everyone in the community will benefit from this effort. In addition, the community requires different programs to meet the needs of various demo-

Figure 1 Racial Difference in Wealth by Household Type, Age 18-64, 2007 Inadequate Financial literacy is a major factor in employees living beyond their paychecks or living from “paycheck to paycheck”. The employer’s role must increase in this area to more than an after thought. Perhaps a series of online tutorials tied to employee development. Employers offering financial literacy courses as part of the benefit package will help address the issue. For example, requiring completion of online courses as a component of the performance evaluation process. The increase understanding will benefit the employer as well as the employee. Living within their current income is a critical success factor in productive employees.

There are companies that provide these services as part of the company’s benefit package. Financial literacy must become part of the daily environment of the workplace. Employees feel better about the company, which keep them more productive, and lead to higher retention rates. A win-win situation is created for the employer and the employee. The first challenges facing high school graduates headed to college are student loans and credit cards. A powerful statement from the university is to require students to completed a financial literacy course before taking out students loans. This could be an online course the summer before entrance. When student loans and credit cards are the only source of income, college students make poor choices for the future. The FDIC conducted a study on unbanked/underbanked families; 41 million families fall into this group, which 23 million are represents African-American families. For some students loans are the only means of gaining an advanced education; however, what is the return on their investment? In the current job market many students are graduating without jobs and mountains of debt. What are the benefits of a financial literacy course during the 63

first semester freshmen year? With a financial literacy course behind them, students at the beginning of their college careers could make more informed money management decisions. Think of the benefits of graduating with a minimum amount of debt in student loans and credit cards; with a detailed plan for repayment. Clark Atlanta University is on the forefront of providing financial literacy to students; preparing the students for financial success. A freshmen level program is currently under development addressing the issue. The story continues... Happy you have gone on to a better place than this. A place that has no sorrow nor pain, A place of eternal peace with no change. Our Guiding Light A God fearing woman was who you were, Always putting your family first. Showering us all with so much love, Working as one of God’s angels down here not from above. Spreading His word and walking in His light, Living life to the fullest and living it right. Working through your trials and tribulations always with a smile, Your daily walk and actions showed proof you were a child of God. A great example of what a woman should be, You were that light in my life that meant so much to me. You have gone on where you will eternally rest, Going home to work on the family’s nest Where once again we all will unite, You are never out of mind just out of temporary sight. Never forgotten but truly missed,

What if

No Subject Just Details

What if there was no pain Would I know what good health means?

Beating on my chest, not knowing if it’s heartburn or a broken heart

What if there was no rain Would I appreciate the sunshine?

She told me that she loved me, But after what she just said, It’s hard to swallow

What if there were no tears Would I understand sorrow?

I walk away with a hung down head Mind confused, eyes welling up with water

What if there were no fears Would I feel like a champion?

But the anger inside is turning into rage So much that I cannot cry

What if there was no rainbow Would I see the silver lining?

If I could go back in time I would dismiss this day

What if I had no eyes to see, Could I realize I am on the wrong road?

So that was three years ago

What if I had no heart, Would I experience love? What if I had no legs Would I get weak in the knees for Her? What if I had no hands Would I really want to shake yours? Hater! What if I had no tongue Would I be wrong if I told a lie?

And now I sit at my desk Reminiscing about it all The good times, the bad times It all worked for my good Now I know I messed up, Actually I acted a fool But thank God for another chance Cuz if I didn’t get it

What if there was no heaven Would I live in hell?

I would’ve died, Without a chance to try.

What if there is no God Should I go to church?

But if you was in my shoes You would’ve felt my pain My anger, my guilt

What if there is no life after death Would I live forever?

To make a mistake like that

What if I’m not really here Is it all a Dream?

Only fool’s rush in, I have known that from day one

What if…. Rev. R.J. 68

Living A Double life You once told me that actions speak louder than words And from the things I see, your words have been heard I believe everything you tell me because I know we have nothing to hide I lay as an open book to you and instead you toss me aside I know your hurt and heart broken too but the actions that you show are nothing brand new I put my faith in you to be strong, determined and to continue to fight for what you loved I guess love can die out From your mouth you tell me that that relationship can never be but its a different ballgame from the things I see The hugs, kisses, laughs and moments you share are no longer the emotions that I have to bare I know we aren’t together but in my heart it still feels like we are I’m sorry I can’t separate the two but I really never imagined my future without you The laughs we have and smiles we bring to one another remind me of the moments when we were together I lay next to you every night wanting to kiss you from head to toe I hold you in my arms and feel your warmth as my heart begins to race Feeling as comfortable as I possibly could until I remember...this whole situation I have misunderstood No more us now it’s all you she just happens to appear in this picture but it’s not us two I no longer know what to believe but I know I must move on This lustful friendship won’t stay strong for long I’m determined to have you and so is she but you have to choose will it be her or me? Think on your future and your goals, remember I’ll always be here especially when you need me the most For your sake I hope you end up with the woman that truly makes you happy and even if it’s not her nor me You need to understand you can no longer do this double life thing..

“The Fight, The Hurt, The Victory” With tears falling, And heart bleeding immensely I go forth. No Real Comrades, No true soldiers, I stand alone, solo, Daddy told me there Would be days like this, But I laughed and said, Not I, But with eyes wide shut, I focus on the prize Not knowing if I’ll attain it But like Maya, Still I rise. Don’t know where The strength comes from To make it through this battle, Don’t know where the power Lies within this tarafirma of dust, But somebody has to fight And suffer and bleed Or the war will be lost Go hard or go home Is what I believe, But before I believe, In my mind I must conceive That I am a Victor Not a victim, dead, But a mercenary soldier

Who’s striving for the enemies’ head? But will I Rise to the occasion And defeat my past? I take a deep breath, Pray, and hope That someday soon This battle will not last Somebody said the battle is the lords So why do I go through it I ask God why so much pain If I am your son Why so much rain He tells me in his word But I want to hear his voice He says sooner will be done But I’m still getting hurt To be a profitable servant Is all I want to be No fame, No Glory Nothing given to me Just his grace and his mercy His sun and his Son, shine down on me So forward I march And lay down my life to be A witness and an example Of how a soldier must endure For the prize of the high calling in Christ In this Christian Journey. Quentein “Levi Lyric” Todd Name: Quentein “Levi Lyric” Todd

Age: 20 Hometown: Detroit, MI Where to find your Brand (Facebook, Twitter, website, etc.): Twitter: @OfficialPyramid Instagram: @OfficialPyramids Officialpyramidgang. spreadshirt.com for now, soon my artist website and a site for the clothing line itself will be up for people to visit. Bio: Quentein “Levi Lyric” Todd, Born on Feb,19,1993 At Hutzel Hospital, In Detroit, Mi. Grew up with an ear for music, with his younger brother’s dad being a DJ and mother loving to sing and just a music-head. That’s where he found his happiness. Growing up, Levi did things like sung for his family, was an exceptional illustrator, and kind of got into poetry. As Levi got into high school, he started to get into hip hop a little more. He noticed that most of his friends were rappers, especially his closest two, Julius “Jae Retch” Evans, and Denikko “Lil Kelso” Thomas. They inspired Levi to start turning his Poetry into raps. He tried it and fell in love. As Levi’s love for singing kind of faded away he still is a big fan of r&b. During his high school years, Levi chose his artist name by taking “Levi” from the bible. The “Levites” were the most faithful group of men to God. He considers himself as a Lyricist. Another passion Levi has is Fashion. He was always known as a trendsetter in his high school to his peers, so it was obvious that he would get into that field as well. Levi then joined an independent label by the name of “25 To Fame”, and did music through them. He created “Pyramid Gang” as a movement/clothing line to express himself through fashion while trying to inform his generation on things he believe is important for us to know.

What sets this brand apart from others is the meaning and message behind the clothing line. Which is basically recognizing the dopeness in life. “Dope” meaning “Delivering Originality, Positivity, and Enlightenment” through music and fashion or anything you can express yourself through. It’s about understanding and being educated in the things that are deeper then what we stress ourself over everyday. That’s why I use the symbols on the logo because it’s controversial, the first thing another person would say is “You in the Illuminati?” Those are African symbols. I’m trying to bring awareness to what we are ignorant of because what i’m bringing will make every one powerful beyond measure. Why should people buy from your brand? People should buy from our brand because it’s a powerful movement. It can be one step closer to everyone coming together and educating one another instead of bringing each other down and ignorant of the things we really need to know. It is not about being selfish and advanvcing ourselves, we want to inspire others and help them progress as well. We should all support each other. What is the vision for your brand? The vision of my brand may not be the same as yours. This is what sets our brand apart. Goals for my brand—short and long term. Short term, I’d like for the brand to be established and known as a positive and dope movement that people are comfortable and working with as we support each other. Long term, I’d like for the this to be more than just a clothing line I’d like for it to be a worldwide movement with clothing stores studios youth programs and plenty more that’s educating and inspiring our people to be positive and strive for success.

Sierra Ginae Ellison At the start of my senior year, I really decided to start writing and posting things on the internet. When I was younger, I always liked to do comics and draw comic strips and storylines. As I got older, I started to do things that were a little bit more mature for my age. When I started to write and get feedback on the things that I posted, I really started to like it more and more. I started liking it so much that I would bail out on friends at school, go to the media center, and write whatever I was writing at home there. On my wattpad, the highest reads I’ve ever gotten on any story was 18 million and counting. If I become a writer in the future, I hope to reach way higher than that amount. Dee “tatTsBy Dee”

Hi. I am “Tattsby Dee”, a tattoo/piercing artist from the west side of 7 mile road in Detroit, MI. I have been tattooing for about 7 ½ years. I have been interested in drawing since the age of 6. My interest for tattoos began in high school, when I got my 1st tattoo from an artist named REDRUM. He later became my mentor because I was one of his few customers that came in with there, tattoo already drawn up and because of that he offered to teach me. At the time I really wasn’t taking it serious because I had other plans. Fast forward to 6 years and a short “vacation” later, I decided to get serious and I bought my first tattoo kit. From there, the rest is history! The artist that inspires me the most would have to be my mentor, REDRUM. Also: Mike Mcmahon, Brandon Bond, Niko Hurtado and Miya Bailey just to name a few. If I had to tell someone what type of artist I am, I would be more of a black and grey style artist. I am also very good at color tattoos and I am looking forward to doing more photo realistic tatts and portrait art in the near future. capture that moment in my life, or anyone’s life at that. Being in front of the camera shows a lot about your personality. You can act and be who ever you want for that moment and not be judged. I’ve grown up watching Americans Next Top Model knowing I could do that, or even watch commercials getting upset because I could have advertised that product so much better. Modeling is a very difficult industry to get recognition in. There are people looking to take advantage of you if you come from an average household with minimum money especially if you know all the wrong people. I’ve learned you just have to be in the right place at the right time. And I’m still trying to find out where that is.

Community Business

Modern Evolution EcoSphere

Community members launched two new wireless networks at the end of April in Detroit neighborhoods, with a third one still in the works. Built on the Commotion mesh wireless platform, these networks function as local communications infrastructure: they act as an intranet for community interactions, and connect to the global Internet. Detroiters trained as technologists and community organizers -- “Digital Stewards” -- are building these new networks with support from Detroit’s Allied Media Projects (AMP), the Open Technol-

ogy Institute (OTI) at New America Foundation in Washington, DC, and the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition. AMP and OTI developed the Digital Stewards training program to grow local digital resources while also creating teaching tools that can be used in other contexts, such as Brooklyn where OTI has partnered with another community group to implement the Digital Stewards program. OTI plans to share the tools online so that any community globally can use them for a “do-it-ourselves” approach to building local wireless networks.

Despite the ubiquity of digital technology -- and its vital role in contemporary life -- the skills necessary to govern these tools are not widespread. While formal schooling and training programs play an important role in addressing this gap between the tools we use and knowing how to fully utilize them, self-taught and peer-led models for expanding knowledge and increasing skills are also critical. To that end,

OTI and AMP anchored their curriculum in the concepts of popular education. By involving “students directly in the teaching/learning process, the training can include a diverse array of individuals with differing skill sets and levels. The popular education approach also makes the curriculum easy to adapt for self-guided learners and communities downloading the teaching tools from the Internet to use independently. Aside from the learn-

ing style, the content areas cover both technical as well as social skills; a community wireless network will only be as useful or effective as the network of people engaged with it. Digital Stewards learn about the mechanics of networks and the Internet, survey and research techniques, budgeting, basic construction skills, and much more. The Detroit Digital Stewards build upon already-existing digital and social resources within their communities, such as public computer centers, block clubs, and community organizing initiatives. They learn how to nourish this ecosystem, adding in new capacity and

technical skill to grow and sustain the community wireless network. Stewards have come from Detroit Digital Justice Coalition member organizations, as well as other community-based groups, or are simply active in their neighborhoods. The Stewards from Morningside (in the eastern part of the city) come from a highly organized neighborhood full of block clubs. They had already established local partners for their network. the network would likely include adding omnidirectional nodes near these initial installs to expand the coverage area. The installation took approximately four hours, with two Stewards plus the church pastor and an OTI staff member on the roof and one Steward on the ground. Tools for this installation included a ladder, Ethernet cable, a laptop, a chimney wrap mount, an eightfoot steel mast/pipe, and the wireless node. The steps were similar as for the ECOSphere team: • Install the Commotion software on the nodes, and configure with custom settings (Morningside chose to secure the network with a WPA2 password). • Climb on the roof and install the mounting hardware on the chimney. • Attach the node to the mast and plug in the Ethernet cable (after installing end-caps on the mast to keep bees out).

For the Stewards, an important piece will be to facilitate a process of envisioning all of the ways to use a community network to strengthen neighborhoods and solve local problems, beyond simply gaining access to the global Internet. In the process, they will work to bring more of their neighbors into the project, leveraging existing resources and skills in addition to developing new ones. Crescendo Detroit Introduces Social Change Through Music Summer Program In the Petosky-Otsego Dexter/Davison Neighborhood

May 14, 2013 - Crescendo Detroit will be offering an El Sistema inspired music, dance and academic support program at The Community Church of Christ, 3841 Humphrey in Detroit, Michigan. Up to 30 students from Kindergarten-8th grade may participate. The six-week program, located in the heart of the Dexter/Davison neighborhood, will begin on June 24th, 2013 The program, named after Jestina Evans, mother of Pastor Rickey Cranford who runs The Community Church of Christ, is the first of its kind in Detroit. “It’s all about giving underprivileged kids in neighborhoods the same kind of opportunity that I had”, says Maestro 104

Damien Crutcher, Crescendo’s Co-Founder and CEO. “Music completely transformed my life and I know it can transform the lives of Detroit’s children too.” Crutcher is a graduate of Cass Technical High School, Michigan State University and The University of Michigan. Under the leadership of its’ founders, brothers Damien and Fred Crutcher and Richard Mukamal, the program’s performance related activities will be led by Kris Johnson. “I am excited about this opportunity to teach music to kids who otherwise would never experience this joy” Johnson says. An accomplished jazz trumpeter, composer and arranger, Johnson is a 2012 Kresge Arts Fellow and Ohio State Faculty member. Monday through Friday from 9:00 am -3:00 pm, participants will be immersed in the rigor and excitement of high quality music and dance instruction taught by some of this country’s best arts educators. Many of them have danced and performed music throughout Talk of Fame 101

the United States, including the White House and Carnegie Hall. The program will also include home made meals and nutritious snacks, bi-weekly backpacks stuffed with food for the weekend and academic support focusing on literacy. “El Sistema is all about creating an ideal environment in which kids can thrive”, states Richard Mukamal, Crescendo’s CoFounder and Board Chairman. “The most important aspect of this program is character development, so we will train our kids in conflict resolution, anger management, how to recognize bullying, and the negative effects of drugs, alcohol and violence on the family and community.” Participants are expected to learn the benefits of respect, self-control

and hard work through intense music and dance. Fred Crutcher, Crescendo’s Cofounder and COO is very pleased with the upcoming program’s details. “My daughters loved the pilot programs over the last couple of years. And I think that having a high quality arts program in inner city neighborhoods at a modest cost is so important for Detroit’s kids and their future.” The cost for the program is $100 per child for the entire six-week program. Crescendo Detroit will rely on donations for most of this ambitious program’s costs.

ABOUT CRESCENDO DETROIT: Established in 2012, Crescendo Detroit is a nonprofit that was created to effect social change in the communities in which it operates by developing intense music and music related programs that promote personal excellence through artistic achievement and character development. Part of the rapidly growing worldwide El Sistema movement, Crescendo Detroit is a founding member of The National Alliance of El Sistema Inspired Programs.
