Cornell La’Flare hails

all the way from Gary, Indiana and is currently based out of Atlanta where he attends the University of West GA as a Psychology major. Lover of all things art and inspired by passion, this designer gets off by the notion of the grind or the struggle to make things happen. He views inventions differently than most. While others look at the cool thing that has been made, he looks at what it took to make it. He believes that no matter what obstacles are in the way, passion can push you through them. He says that the hardest thing he had to do to make his DREAM become a reality was to educate himself on the world that he was jumping into. Initially uninterested in fashion, he had to research trends, production, and marketing to get tips on how to make his line stand out compared to other urban clothing lines.

Malik Yoba

MALIK YOBA

Actor, Educator, Inspirational Speaker and Author Interview with Paulette Carter Best known for his roles in the Disney classic, “Cool Runnings” and the hit Fox television series “New York Undercover”, Malik Yoba has proven himself as a man driven to raise consciousness through the use of his many talents. This actor, musician, activist, educator, inspirational speaker, playwright, entrepreneur and author leaves no stone unturned in his quest to educate others, young people and adults alike on the value of accountability, integrity and leadership. Born and raised in New York City, Yoba is not a product of his environment but a progression, an example to others that the same inner city streets that breed hatred and violence can give birth to positive ideas and upward mobility. Yoba began educating youth when he was considered a “youth” himself. Realizing at a young age that he had the gift to move others and raise consciousness, he was already very involved in mentoring and after school counseling by age 16. 11

Actor, Educator, Inspirational Speaker and Author Before his career as an actor, Yoba was an educator and very respected among his peers in education and community activism. By age 20, he worked with 13 New York City Public schools in a program called AIDP (Attendance Improvement Dropout Prevention), in which he assessed students, faculty and parents needs to improve the quality, content and form of education, thereby improving attendance which was presented

to the Board of Education in a book of findings. From the ages of 19 to 24, Yoba was a full time educator and worked with the City Kids Foundation, a NYC based youth leadership organization. By the age of 23 his work had not gone unnoticed and he was appointed vice president of the organization and served from 1991-1993. In 1989, he

co-founded the City Kids Foundation branch in Los Angeles. Yoba designed and facilitated workshops on leadership, cultural diversity, community organizing, conflict resolution and self- esteem. He has worked internationally with young people from Johannesburg Secondary School in South Africa to Rikers Island High School and Spafford Detention Center in New York as well as designed and conducted the first ever youth leadership conference in Belize, Central America. Yoba has been recognized by or worked with former President Bill Clinton, The Congress of the United States, The Mayor of New York City, NYPD, UNICEF, McDonald’s Black Achievers, Hale House, The Ethiopian Children’s Fund, The Conference of Black Mayors, The Congressional Black Caucus to name a few for his dedication to youth.

Yoba’s love for the arts is constant. Since 1989 he has been in over 25 films including “Copland,” “Smoke,” “Blue in the Face,” “Hooked Up” “Harlem Aria,” “Vote for Me,” “Ride” and “Dreaming in Black and White,” winner of Best Film at the 2003 Phoenix Film Festival, to name a few. In 2005 he starred in the comedy “Kids in America” a feature, also starring George Wendt, Rosanna Arquette and Nicole Ritchie. That same year he played the recurring character “Ice: The Bounty Hunter” on the Emmy award-winning comedy “Ar-

rested Development” for Fox Television and also co-starred in the Warner Bros. film “Criminal” opposite John C. Rielly and Diego Luna. Yoba, a veteran of 11 network/cable television series or pilots, also starred in TNT’s first series “Bull” (TNT) and NBC’s short lived series “Kingpin,” “Raines” opposite Jeff Goldblum and he had a recurring roles in the 2003-2005 seasons of “Girlfriends” (UPN) and was a series regular in the F/X Network series, “Thief” (March 2006) with Andre Braugher and Linda Hamilton. In 2007 he starred in Tyler Perry’s immensely popular “Why Did I Get Married?” which led to the sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?”. In 2009 Malik played “Commander Ted Shaw” on the ABC series “Defying Gravity.” He also wrote, directed and starred in the BET.com webseries “ShopTalk” and recently wrapped the indie feature “Recalled”(2012) and begins production April 2011 on SyFy’s “Alphas” w/ David Strathairn slated for July.

Cited by the New York Times Magazine as “An artist who will most likely influence American culture in the next thirty years…” (Nov 1994), Yoba is on his way to achieving that prediction. He served as an

12

arts educator for over 20 years and his theatre company, The “Malik Yoba National Theatre” (MYNT) Company, creates, acquires, produces and distributes content for the urban theatre market. This is a 25 year old market that is primarily African American females, ages 25-55 yrs old. He has co-written two musicals for stage: “What’s on The Hearts of Men” and “Acoustic Chocolate” that have been adapted for screen. The MYNT Company is also a proud sponsor of the Hip Hop Theatre Festival and Yoba is one of the partners in the new publication Urban Theatre and Entertainment Magazine, the first magazine to cover the urban theatre market. He has been a guest on Oprah, Charlie Rose, Regis and Kelly, to name a few. He has performed as a musical artist at Carnegie Hall and New York’s Theatre at Madison Square Garden. He was also co-musical director for the Henson/ABC produced Saturday morning show the “CityKids” and wrote the theme song for the Jamaican bobsled team in the movie “Cool Runnings”.

In 1996 Yoba fulfilled a life long dream of being a restaurateur and became a partner in Soul Café, in NYC’s Times Square for nine years until it closed in 2004.

Yoba’s book, Please Return My Phone Call! Preventing the Demise of Personal and Professional Relationships, is THE handbook for business and interpersonal relationships that is rapidly challenging the thought processes of students, individuals, business owners and billion dollar corporations as it pertains to interpersonal communication, integrity, accountability, leadership, and proper follow through. This book leaves readers “switched on” and conscious of their habits and habits of others in business and life. Since February 2006 he has worked with Citrix, Columbia University Film School, and Yale University, Morgans Hotel Group to name a few (see book bio). His message transcends from middle schools (instilling the idea of accountability) to corporations (confronting habits that cost companies millions).

PC: How long have you been act-

ing?

been turned down for a role in which you auditioned for?

MY: I have been acting since I was MY: Getting turned down for

about 5 or 6. Started with school plays and plays I wrote with my siblings at home. Professionally since 1989

PC: Who or what was it that made you want to become an actor?

MY: I wanted to become an actor after I saw “Alice In Wonderland” off Broadway at age 4 PC: Do you have your own orga-

nization/business to help up and coming actors? If not would it be of your interest to start one?

MY: I teach a class called “The

Working Actor” at Long Island University. My goal is to provide professional training for aspiring performers and nationally through The Malik Yoba National Theatre Company.

PC: How many times have you 13

roles happens way more than actually booking them. I don’t have a number but it’s been a lot. But I have also been blessed to work a lot too. Hence why I believe in starting your own productions!

be an actor, if you were even given a script where you would have to play these roles what would you do? Accept the part or turn it down and why)

MY: As a rule of thumb I don’t portray roles that demean or hurt women or children. OR at least I try very hard to stick to that!!

PC: Do you think in today’s society PC: What lessons have you learned it is easier or harder for an African American to get into the acting industry?

MY: I think that question is old

and tired!!! Do for self and don’t worry about color or how hard things are. If you really want it and feel purposed to do it, go for it and don’t give up until you achieve your dream. It’s never too late to succeed but it’s easy to fail if you give up too early.

PC: How do you feel about play-

ing the part of a crooked cop, an abusive husband, or a rapist (What I mean is how pressed are you to

from acting that you use in your everyday life style?

MY: Acting is not about “acting” it is about being. Great actors are great students of life and always working to expand their horizons and knowledge base. It also makes you a more interesting person! PC: What advice would you like to

give to today’s younger generation?

MY: My advice I always share is what my father always told me “Build your own generator so when they turn off the power you still have lights!”

Lyric (David Taylor) Detroit, MI

He’s always been a fan of hip-hop ever since he was just a little kid. His dad used to bang artist like Redman, Wu-Tang, Biggie, 2Pac, and Das EFX in his home, while his mother to played artist like Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo so he has always been around good music. After years of being an admirer of music, at the age of 16, in February of 2009 when he was, he bought his first microphone and attempted to write his first song for his girlfriend’s birthday, singing an R&B track. The song featured two raps by Lyric, gaining positive feedback for the raps but negative for the singing. This gave him the idea to improve his rhymes and start a career as a emcee. He completed 2 mixtapes before exposing his music to anyone. He then posted a song on the website Facebook to test his skills against people’s crtiques. He gained a surprising number of positive comments and love for the song. Since then he has released 13 mixtapes and an EP which has over reached over 1,000 downloads of his works. The Detroit emcee is now 18 and ready for anything that comes at him. You can find his music and updates at youtube.com/DaveMauriceTV - facebook. com/LyricMusic - Twitter.com/DaveLyric He recently released his EP on the 1st of June. Doomed Spirits You traveled many distant lands Attempting to reach the soul of every man Everyone at that time was able to hear your voice Every decision made by man was their own choice

LeRhonda R. Carter

What a World! The world we live in continues to take and take When we will have a break?

Many were willing to talk the talk

If it is not the mortgage company trying to take away our homes,

But when it came time to walk the walk

Then it is the collection agencies, car insurance and medical bills.

Not too many of them behind you stood

It is getting too difficult to live.

But you knew from the beginning some were up to no good Exchanging information with the devil for gold

Worked at my job faithfully for 12years Only to get a pink slip because of my job being sent overseas

Not realizing they were selling their souls

Where they have a problem understanding & comprehending the language I speak.

Not one thought of their eternal life was present in their mind

Disconnection notices now monthly on the cable, gas & lights.

Only concerned with the present time

When is someone going to step in to make this world right?

They gave up so much for material things

Employers offering overworked and under paid jobs,

Ignorantly sacrificing their spiritual being

I am human! I am unable to function as if a robot.

He that sacrificed so much is the one they turned against

I am so fed up with having my hard earned money taken away from me

Due to their weakness for a temptation they couldn’t resist

When will we see any relief?

Though they were to gain for their deceitfulness soon

Taxes on everything! We suffer because of those higher up and didn’t steal a thing!

They may have earthly wealth but their spirits are doomed

It seems we go to work to pay everyone else.

23

Employers won’t give us enough money to have anything left over for ourselves. No mercy in this world! No grace! They are adding on more money to our bills if we are late. (But we are not compensated for the mistakes they make) We don’t control the time frame that we are paid Bills and fees increase but not minimum wage!!!! by: LeRhonda R Carter

Scares You left me with scares in side and out, you took every thing away from me, you blacken my life and tried to destroy me But what you didn’t know and could not understand, inside my heart lived a better man, Just waiting for me to call on his name, that would give me love and never sham, that would hold me at night, and always clam my fears, he even gently wipe away my tears. He give me peace and joy , mercies and grace too, but the best gift from him was my freedom from you. By: Nana

Nana’s Corner Hello, My name is Brenda Lewis, I am 61 years old. I am a wife of one God fearing man, a mother, and a grandmother. But most importantly I am a God fearing Christian. On this page I will be sharing a few thoughts on life learned lessons.

Let’s Talk About The Gospel What is the gospel?

Who is the gospel for?

Does it mean the same to everyone?

If there wasn’t a gospel then we couldn’t be saved. For Romans 10:9 says that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from dead, thou shall be saved. The word gospel means; Good news of the death and burial, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ for our sins. The Greek word for gospel is “euangelion”, which means a reward for doing good. Overtime it changed to the good news. Without the gospel how can you witness to others about Jesus, faith, blessings, grace or mercy? Until you are saved and have confessed Jesus as Lord, you cannot share in these benefits. The gospel includes the death and resurrection, because through his resurrection he is set apart from any other religious leader’s death. Jesus Christ rose from the dead to give believers the assurance of forgiveness, a vital part of the gospel of Christ. So the gospel is both Christ’s death on the cross and his resurrection from the grave for the sins of mankind. As if it’s the same for everyone, your walk with Christ is your walk, only you and Christ knows the relationship you have. As God has made all of us different, I’m sure what the gospel means to each individual is different also. As we open our hearts to accept the Lord, the person’s life takes on the form of the Good News according to the needs and commitment of each Christian. My question to you; Have you allowed the gospel to take up residence in your life and if so are you sharing the Good News with any one? Scripture reference: 1st Corinthian 15:1-5, Cor. 5:21, Luke 19:10 “Religions are man’s search for God; the gospels God’s search for man” E. Stanley Jones
