Rene Beauty Through My Eyes

RENE M. MUA

Did you have any setbacks and what did you do to keep going?

The makeup artist behind the name...

The biggest struggle in becoming a MUA is that it’s not cheap at all. Even if u try to start out using the cheaper products, the amount of products and equipment you need is costly. I’ve been lucky enough to have a very supportive family that has had a helping hand in my start.

“Well, I’m from the east side of Detroit, the 3rd of 5 kids. I’m a single mom with the most awesome 5yr old little boy any parent could ask for. My personality is........hard to explain. I really love to laugh and I’m super sweet, but a tad bit fiesty at times. I have a tendacy to be very direct. In my spare time if I’m not playing in makeup, it’s a great chance that I’m watching “Investigation Discovery” which is my favorite station in the world, or just listening to some music (huge jazz and neosoul fan). Did you always know you would be a make up artist? If so, explain how you knew. If not, when did you know this is what I want to do? I didn’t know I wanted to do makeup until maybe 21/2 yrs ago. I’ve been doing it professionally now for about 11/2 yrs. I use to always do people’s makeup before we went out and found myself watching movies or looking in magazines and focusing more on the makeup than anything else. I don’t remember if it was my sister or one of my sister/cousins that asked me why don’t I just become a makeup artist, so I did. How strong is your passion for being a MUA? Becoming a MUA was the best decision I ever made because I absolutely love it. I’ve never done anything before this that I was excited to do whether it be doing someone’s wedding, prom, or just a “look” for the day, it makes my heart smile to see and hear someone say how much they love my work.

9

What was your most challenging design? The most challenging makeup for would be special affects I’m not experienced in it the way I would like to be What would you say to someone trying to become a MUA? For anyone trying to become a makeup artist I would say don’t let what people say discourage you makeup isn’t for everybody. There are people who will have something negative to say. The best bet is to ignore them. Be sure this is what you want to do because you will have some really long days sometimes, but it’s so worth it if this is really what you love. And never be afraid to express yourself creatively. There’s a million and one MUAs. Make sure you try to stand out somehow. Last but not least and most importantly, keep faith in yourself and your skills. Would you change anything you’ve done up to this point? The only thing I would change at this point would be the fact that I didn’t start doing what I do sooner. I wasted a lot of time on jobs that didn’t matter. I work now, but its at a place where they sell tons of makeup and I’m surronded by other artists. Finally what would be your greatest accomplishment? I don’t have a greatest accomplishment so far. I love my work, so I take pride in everything I do and I appreciate my clients for choosing me as their artist. So, I guess providing a service worthy of someone’s praise to the point of referrals would be it.

Follow us on twitter: @NateG’smusic @Talkoffame101 @talentedp Bio Being able to describe a true go getter describes Nate G’s. Born Nate Mason, he was raised in the streets of Chester, PA. Even though he was raised by a Christian family, he still grew up around a bunch of hustlers and drug dealers. His uncle and cousin were notorious for being two of the largest drug dealers in the city of Chester. With his family being affiliated with gangs and drugs,

Nate had no other choice but to be affiliated with the streets. At age 11, he became gang affiliated with the ‘Fairground Killas’ (F.G.K). With him being affiliated with the FGK, he got into several situations that almost ended his career as a rapper before it even begun. He was involved in several gang fights, got arrested a few times, and faced a couple of life threatening situations. If living the street life was not bad enough, he suf-

fered a major loss in his life, his grandmother Rosie. “My grandmother and I were real close. I remember a lot of good times that I spent with her. I miss her!!” If losing your grandmother wasn’t bad enough, In March 2003 his cousin Rasheed ‘Bagh’ Ward died, and in November 2003 his Uncle Lamar ‘Dic’ Bishop died. Both his uncle and his cousin were murdered in the same year. To release some of his anger due to all the deaths that was happening in his life, he begun to write down his thoughts. His thoughts started to come together into poems. From his poems it started to turn into raps. Before he knew it, he didn’t need to write down his poems to clear his mind. He could just speak his mind and they became into a lyrical masterpiece. With the street life being so tempting he knew that he had to do one thing that his uncle asked him to do, graduate from High School. So in June of 2004 Nate graduated from Chester High School. “The day that 16

I graduated from high school I knew that my uncle was looking down at me, pleased to see that I graduated.” After being through all of that: the drama, the losses, and graduating high school; he decided to put all the foolishness behind him and grow up. So he did a year at Clark Atlanta University. While he attended Clark Atlanta University he transformed his dorm room into his own personal studio. He had several of his classmate’s produce the beats then he would go into the room set up the room so that it would be as sound proof as possible and start free styling at any beat anyone would put at him. While attending Clark he produced his first single “So fresh, so fly.” He started to focus so much on his rap career that he focused less on his school work. Because rapping was taking up so much of his life he decided to withdraw from Clark and move back to Chester to go back to what he knows the best, expressing his thoughts over beats. Since then Nate has

dropped four very successful mix tapes: Mr. Perfect, Perfect Storm, Perfect Murder (datpiff.com), and It’s So Perfect(datpiff.com). You can find his latest hit single (Swaver) on iTunes and you can also watch the video on Worldstarhihop.com. Nate has had a very productive year in 2011, doing an impressive 16 music videos. He is steady traveling getting his brand out there, reppin’ his squad SS GANG and his new found independent label Mo Muzik. He is determined to achieve his goals, and make his dreams a reality. Nate has done collaborations with up and coming artists such as: Giovanni, Young Chief, Shake, Young Ryda, and Young Phill just to name a few. His productions consist of: Myke Maj Beatz (produced for Lil Wayne, Kardinal Official, Barrington Levy, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Mims, Shaggy, and Wyclef Jean), Antmo Beatz (engineered for Guru), TMumbles (produced for Peedi Crakk), Young Tone the Beat Bully (Jahlil Beats younger brother, produced for Meek Mill, Young Chris, Lou Williams, Rick Ross), and many other producers.

Creative Voices Love Love is something you must process in order to give. Love is something that must start in you in order for it to work through you to others. Love will change your heart , your will and your life. Love builds you up not tear you down, Love is a giver, not an abuse. Love will allow you to give your life for others. Love is a word of action, you can say it but until you show it-it is not in affect. Love that allows you to do these things can only be gained in knowing our Lord and Savior, because until you know Jesus and his loveYou have no love. He said it (Father forgive them). He showed it (Death on the cross). He lived it (Resurrection). Brenda P. Lewis My Grandma This is the hardest poem I’ve had to write. I’d always hoped you would be within my reach, within my sight. When I think of how I can’t reach out to touch your face, It sends me back to a painful place. A place I thought I would never be, Because you would live here eternally. I still pick up the phone to give you a call, It hurts when I get no answer at all. No words can express the way I feel, Your death to me doesn’t seem real. No one’s love can be compared To your gift of love you taught and shared. I am honored to have been blessed with your grace. Thank you for not complaining when I crowded your space. You gave me so much in so many ways, I miss you more with each passing day! R.I.P Alice Irene Batchelor LeRhonda Renee Carter

When I first laid eyes on you, emotions I couldn’t control Thoughts filled my mind that sent a tingle through my soul When you opened your mouth and released your angelic tone, I caught feelings for many reasons unknown! The first time we talked was the start of something pure I now behold this addiction that seems to have no cure Even on your bad day you can’t help but look good The sense of warmth you provide and the comfort you give Surrounds my body and releases my fears Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually you are what I crave Getting dressed 2impress is all for you every day and even though you say it’s not needed I do it because it makes me feel complete and when I reveal how I feel to you and the world No one can say that I am an unfit girl… Making you happy is what I’m here to do The days we are away, I miss you like crazy and the days we are together I can’t help but to get lazy because, it’s an excuse to be closer to you, Being wrapped in your arms becomes so peaceful As we lay together while sleeping I feel so equal Not rushing into too much or giving too many emotions Just wanting this to stretch out as far as the ocean! As our minds seem to bump and thoughts float all over the place Keep this one thought in mind…. I’m here to stay and wouldn’t want it any other way!! Michael D. Harding

Dear Jane It’s time to wake up And put on a happy face, it’s my version of makeup. I look to your side of the bed you’re not there, But something is and it’s just little strands of your hair. I put on my slippers, Let the blinds up light shine through the windows, Then I walk pass, you head to the bathroom let out a river, Don’t do my zipper, You walk in with a temper, I’m like what? I’m a man, I don’t need to use tissue. What are you my mother? Now, cuz you sure is acting like her. What are you gon’ do, shoot me...you don’t have choppers like a biker, You didn’t give birth to me...we married and that’s what I think you lost sight of. We have a major problem here and I’m tired Of acting like it’s minor. Everything I do you get pissed like the river I just let out. You tell me to go to hell head south. Since all I say is for the birds like bread crumbs, You’ve flipped the L-word upside down now it looks like a seven, To find the right one is rare am I ever gon’ be well done, We was clearly special now we just incoherent. Wait are you pregnant? Come on tell me, preach to the choir Ms. Reverend. Let me know what the news is, ‘Cuz not knowing has become such a nuisance, If you gon’ continue to put on a show well I won’t be a tourist, Now I have other plans let me grab my blueprints, Go ahead cry and view this, Only love you ever had leave out...trust me I didn’t want to do this. Our relationship is blown everyone can see the plumage, And I’m not gon’ stick around and look foolish. I’m being straight forward so you don’t have to deal with hearsay, This is good-bye Dear Jane.

The easier it is to forget him Who has already forgotten you.

“The Sweetest Word” The sweetest word I’ve ever heard And irritating all the same Reminds me of a Shakespearean line What’s in a name?

The Latest Poem U Inspired The longer he stays away The easier it is to forget him A woman’s intuition is a dangerous thing She knows things That may or may not be true She believes things That may or may not be so But what she feels Is unmistakable When phone calls stop When texts go from 100 to 0 She knows But what she doesn’t know Is why And why doesn’t she? Because the phone calls have stopped And the texts have gone from 100 to 0 And all in a matter of 2 days But the longer he stays away The easier it is to forget him Its not what she wants to do Its what he wants And when you love him But that’s not enough The only other thing to do Is to let him go Because the longer he stays away 21

I hear it twenty or thirty times And that’s just in an hour My nerves are bad but I’m not sad I’ll just go plant a flower Ah well that didn’t work for me I never believed it would It’s 8 p.m. and time for bed As all little boys should The sweetest word I’ve ever heard And irritating all the same I hear it now a dozen times When did Ma become my name? Brian Moore “fade Proof”

What it means to engineer

Brian Moore Producer/Engineer Brian Moore In-depth interview with Rosalyn Pressley Ros: So Brian, tell us a little about yourself. Brian: Let’s see, well, I don’t have any kids. I would like to have one one day. Then I can have them get me the remote, cut the grass, and play video games with lol! Ros: So, how would you describe yourself, personality etc...? Brian: I would say I’m very sexy (Ros: LOL). What’s funny? I am sexy, lol. No, for real, I think I’m somewhat of an introvert. But when it’s time to get in the public eye and work, I’ve learned to flip the switch. This allows me to be a people person in the public. Especially, when I’m working with various artists! I can’t afford to be passive and shy when it’s time to get busy. I have to be able to communicate well for a great product. Anyone in this field needs to be able to do so. It comes with the territory. Ros: So, what exactly is your job as a Music Production Engineer?

“Fade Proof”

the vocals, and sound FX, it’s quite fun! But that’s the easy part. Capturing the performance doesn’t end your day. There is still the production work to be done. This involves listening to the recordings multiple times and mixing down until you have a cohesive production. If you don’t do this correctly, you’ll ultimately have a recording that sounds like crap. Believe me, you can tell the difference. One of the best mixed albums that standout to me is Jay Z’s “Blueprint”. Whoever mixed that did a damn good job, sonically amazing. There are some others also I can think of like Outkast’s “Stankonia” album. Ros: Did you always know you wanted to be an engineer? Brian: No. Originally growing up, I wanted to emulate what I saw. Run DMC, LL, Big Daddy Kane, etc... led me to want be a rapper. I wanted to be on stage “spitting hot fire” LOL! Then I realized that I wasn’t all that good at writing lyrics or raps hahahaha. I could give ya one good one, but a whole album, wasn’t going to happen. However, it led me to an artist promotions career. I did that for about 4 years actively! Those things combined with my creative ear, experience, and passion for music, directed me towards engineering.

Brian: Everything from operation of the boards to making sure that the levels are good. Ensuring that everyting sounds good in the booth. Also, helping the artist to give his or her best performance. It’s challenging of course. All artists aren’t created equal so sometimes, they require fades and instrument levRos: So when did you exactly hit the point when you els to be raised to enhance said to yourself “I want to be an engineer”? their sound, lol. I can’t have the artist coming out the studio Brian: It’s always been in my blood. I’ve always sounding like a flock of geese. wanted to create music! When I was young, I would All in all, being in the studio draw stage setups, who does that? I was nerdy My behind a large sound board can Grandfather was a drummer, so I had a solid foundalook intimidating but, it’s not tion to grow from also. Looking back, that was one that bad. Once you understand of the reasons I expressed how much I wanted to the placement of your tracks, know how the music was created. Visually, I wanted PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONNINES ELLIOTT 27

to understand. I always had a drum machine and was lucky to grow up in a time when music on the radio wasn’t as segregated as it is now. Now, you see like 2 or 3 urban stations, Top 40, and a few other genres. The stations I listened to then had a broader spectrum of music. I listened to everything from KISS to RUN DMC and believe me there was a lot of good music in between those two. Today radio play kinda keeps the listener in a box. Ros: Did you have any setbacks during your growth or pursuit to be an engineer? Brian: Growing up trying to be a rapper was difficult. Plus, remember I said writing wasn’t my thing? LOL. So for me, it was either rap or get a job.... I got a job! But, I did not lose my passion or focus on the music industry. Ultimately, working my way into promotions. I did realize along the way that, I did not want to be the person in front of the camera or on the stage. I learned that the business side was way more important. But, that knowledge came with time and experience. Ros: With that said, did you or do you wish you had courses like the one you just completed? Would that have furthered your career? Brian: Of course! If I had the classes and training at an early age, it would have made a world of difference. There was a young man in the class with me. He said that this was his option for the summer and he was only 16. I thought this was a brilliant move for him. If he sticks with it, by the time he reaches 21 he could be a monster! He would also have plenty of time to grow with the industry, starting so young. When you get older in age it’s a crap shoot. I have things I can fall back on within the industry’s business side in case things go south. Diversity is a must. 28

Ros: In a yes or no answer, do you think there are enough music or entertainment learning programs marketed and made available to today’s youth? Brian: NO! Ros: How do you like to challenge yourself? Brian: I think the challenge for me is not to hender my

own progress. I want to allow myself to be great. A lot of people can’t do that because the may fear success or the unkown. I’m looking success and the unknown in the face and saying “Bring It”! Ros: Would you change anything you’ve done up to this point? Brian: Well, if I had the opportunity to acquire the training and knowledge I posses now at an earlier stage in my life, I would do that. Fresh out of high school or during high school. I would never change my history and experiences with music, because I had a ball! I’m about to have another ball now!! Ros: Given the opportunity, would you teach or mentor young people/students? Brian: Of course, there needs to be an emphasis on music and how you create good music! Today, many of you have no clue about using a real instrument. Most only know drums and keyboards. There is a plethora of music, instuments, and sounds used to

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONNINES ELLIOTT

create good music. Kids don’t really think about those things. Many school districts do not have the funding to support and facilitate this course of learning. If and when I get the opportunity, it would be my pleasure to provide these young people with some direction and knowledge.

Ros: What local artist would you like to work with? Brian: There are a few camps of artists that I would like to work with. Off the top of my head, the Shady Camp, Royce Da 5’9”, and Ms Corona. Ros: So, what would you say to someone looking to

29

be a music production engineer? Brian: Run! LMAO! No, for real, I would say that they need to study! Not knowing the business is the number one reason why people fail in this industry. Knowing how the money is made with writers, producers, and artists. For example, R Kelly and Missy Elliott should never be broke because of all the music they’ve written past and present. Everytime their music is played, they are getting residuals. The problem with some of these artist trying to break in is, if you only make music for your momma and your homies, those are most likely all the people who are going to by your stuff! You gotta go outside of your neighborhood and you have to expose yourself as an artist. Some of the best selling records come from artists who have exposed some of their personal life in their music. Ros: Thank you Brian for sharing a little of yourself with us and the readers. You’re an inspiring person and we wish you nothing but success!

tiffany woodard How many people can actually say that they’re passionate about there career. Make-up Artistry is my passion, it gives me that outlet. I haven’t always been into it, I originally started out doing hair, graduating from Cosmetology school, in November of 2010. Thats where it started it was 2009, practicing on my classmates and started to get side jobs. I never really thought I was as good as people made it seem, until I found my comfort zone. I stopped worrying about how good I was or how much I had to learn. Im humble as an artist because I know what it took to get to this point and im no where near the finish line. Im self taught, learning through experience, you-tube an a lot of practice. I get my inspiration from glamorous women like Dorthy Dandridge, and Lena Horne, & from the 20’s-50’s thats when true beauty was captured by charm in a presentable, respectful and classy way. I’ve worked onset with photographers, particpated in hairshows in collaboration, done weddings, photo shoots and special projects with models. Networking has allowed me to meet other amazing artist as well, in hopes of working with some of the best. Im not trying to be different Im just trying to bring a breath of freah air. Even when im behind the scenes my client is counting on my professionalism and expertise. As an artist I want my clients to ask questions, give direction to there overall look and be comfortable. A make-up artist cannot sell confidence but we can restore it. When you hire a professional artist thats what you deserve, they should be able to be at your aide. I let my work speak for itself. I’m capturing moments and expressing ideas. It’s a big difference from just punching a clock. As of now I travel, doing make-up, and hair booking clients for their wedding parties, pamper parties, photoshoots and special events. Some of my services include: personal makeovers, facials, lash enhancements, eyebrow arching and make-up applications onset for proms, weddings, plays, pageants, fashion shows, hairshows, photo shoots, editorial and personal service. My rates are reasonable. booking can be made by phone or email. Right now i’m in partnership with another stylist with hopes of building a brand that Detroit artists can be proud of. 2012 will be focused on building on my talent and growing as an artist. DJ Such N Such definitely has an ear for good sounds and a smooth swag that gets the crowd jumpin’. His high quality standards for good music a good time is no accident, such as it is. (Forgive me for the pun.) Though his talent isn’t accidental, his start may very well be consider a coincidental opportunity. “I use to dance before DJing. I was opening up for a comedy tour at the Detroit Fox Theater. The DJ didn’t show up and everyone started panicking; now I have never DJ’d up until this point, but I said I would do it if I was showed how to operate it. My boy showed me the basics and from there it was a go.” And a go it was, for the next 5 years DJ Such N Such (who got his name for playing any and everything he wants.) went on to create a successful start in the DJing business. He brings an eclectic direction to his music. “I play everything,” says Such. “I’ve been all over the nation with different artist and grew up around music, growing up I played 4 different musical instruments.” Because of his versatility and broad range of music, DJ Such N Such has proven capabilities to DJ at any club on any night. is an Independent Hip Hop/Rap Artist from Detroit, Michigan. The “Art Decco” sound is widely different than any other New Artist of the Hip Hop/Rap genre simply because of the unique relationship between the artist and producers who tailor tracks specifically to blend with the cadences and melodic style of Art Decco’s voice & delivery. Art Decco sites his influences as 2Pac, Lupe Fiasco, Nas, Ice Cube, Jay Z, StreetLordz, Eminem, 50 Cent, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Scarface, E40, & T.I. amongst others, but sites his family as his greatest inspiration. The musical journey began in early 1997 when Art first attended a recording session with a friend. After seeing how the recording process worked, Art having been a lifelong rap fan. Health

YOGURT By Wanda Elliott, EBMS

The weapon that will help to make a positive difference in your digestive tract. What is yogurt? It is “a fermented slightly acid often flavored semisolid food made of milk and milk solids to which cultures of two bacteria (Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus) have been added” (Merriam-Webster, 2011)1. Yogurt has been around for centuries and is used in different countries. Its purpose is to maintain one’s digestive health. The “good” bacteria or “probiotics” that it contains help to minimize or eliminate the “bad” bacteria and waste from the intestine walls so that the intestine can continue to absorb the necessary nutrients the body needs to function properly. Probiotics are not only found in yogurt, it is also found in live vegetables and supplements. How does yogurt benefit? Yogurt and other products containing probiotics are an important part of our diets because they help to prevent diseases and infections as well as maintain the immune system. Yogurt provides a wealth of vitamins to the body such as protein, calcium, B-2, B-12. It also provides nutrients such as potassium and magnesium, all that are very important to the function of the human body. It aides in the elimination of waste by cutting down the time food remains in the gut, the regulation of blood pressure, prevention of vaginal yeast infections, prevention of over indulgence of food (WedMD, 2011)2. While probiotics are good for our gastrointestinal (GI) health, antibiotics are used to destroy the “bad” bacteria when it gets out of hand and becomes uncontrollable within the GI Tract. Because antibiotics cannot dis49

Yogurt tinguish the difference between the “good” or the “bad”, they all are destroyed. So, reintroducing probiotics is the best defense for maintaining the perfect level of bacteria. Who does yogurt benefit? Yogurt can benefit everyone. Each individual is unique. So depending on what ails an individual, yogurt may be helpful. It is used by women because it is most beneficial in attacking yeast. It helps both men and women with diseases like Crohn’s. It also helps individuals who are lactose intolerant. It is consumed as an alternative to milk. Which brand is good for me? Not all yogurt products are created equally. Some cultures actually travel the intestinal tract, while some unfortunately do not. Also, various yogurt brands consist of certain amounts of sugar, calories, calcium, and unsaturated fats that may or may not affect one’s diet. The key is to make sure the right brand of yogurt is purchased so that the body can benefit. Brands such as “Enliven”, “Chobani”, and “Yoplait” have excellent choices. Not only do the products have an excellent taste factor, they are excellent from a dietary standpoint. Sideffects? Yogurt is not known to have an serious side effects (Drugs.com, 2011), but if your GI tract is damaged or you are having elimination problems and you do not have a clue as to what to do, it is best to consult a specialist. Otherwise, have some yogurt. Your body will thank you later.
