Hear It. See It. Feel It. Stilian Kirov Music Director

M. Bryan Burrow President/CEO

Our 2016-17 season will be inspirational, exciting and full of outstanding music. We remain faithful to the music of the great composers of the past and we continue our mission to explore music by composers of our time. The BSO’s subscription concerts will include masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Beethoven, Bartók, Mozart and many more. We also have exceptional soloists joining us on stage such as Tomoki Sakata, Alexander Velinzon, Eunice Kim, Kolio Plachkov, the Bakersfield Master Chorale and our brilliant Concertmaster Julia Haney. Thank you for your friendship and for being a part of the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra’s family. Here’s to an exciting, joyful and inspirational 2016-17 season!

Bravo! Together we had one of the most successful years in the BSO’s history this last season. Our average attendance grew 67% over the last three years, we doubled the amount of our concerts, and our visibility within the community significantly increased due to the excitement people experienced at our concerts. Looking forward to this season, our community can once again expect to enjoy amazing concerts as we bring incredible live music to you as seen in this brochure and at BSOnow.org. Just like many in our community, the BSO is feeling the effects of our challenged local economy and have tightened our belt to operate in an efficient and effective manner. It is more important now than ever before to have you as individuals support this wonderful organization so we can inspire people with our music as well as outreach to the students of Kern County. Our outreach opens the eyes and hearts of children to see beyond the walls surrounding them. Since only one third of our revenue comes from ticket sales we rely heavily on the generosity of people like you to make this happen. Support the BSO at BSOnow.org. Thank you for being an advocate and a friend of the BSO.

Poetry and music are two powerful art forms on their own but when combined, they are unstoppable. Both musical pieces on the program were inspired by poems - George Meredith’s poem about the song of the skylark and Friedrich Schiller’s immortal “Ode to Joy”.

A romantic program filled with music that inspired songwriters of our time. Did you know that the third movement of Brahms’s brilliant Violin Concerto was the inspiration for the song Don’t Cry for Me Argentina? A true masterpiece paired with Tchaikovsky’s powerful, intimate and touching Sixth Symphony.

MUSIC EDUCATION FOR A NEW GENERATION Young People’s Concerts (YPC) Through our partnership with Kern County Superintendent of Schools we have inspired young people to have a lifetime love of music. The BSO hosts three exciting YPC’s in October, November, and February serving over 12,000 students each year. These concerts offer a fun, exciting introduction to music all while fulfilling Common Core Standards. For more information please call the BSO office at 661-323-7928.

Kids Discover Music • The BSO brings musicians directly into the classroom to entertain and ignite passion for music. We perform familiar music that relates to the students such as “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid, and the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song. This revelation opens doors to younger students when they realize that orchestras can be fun, familiar, and most importantly create a spark in potential musicians to pursue their dreams. • Our purpose is to bring rich musical experiences into the classroom and to compliment their current music education. • Designed to integrate musical concepts and activities into existing classroom curriculum.

A donor based endeavor that introduces our local students to live symphonic music by providing them with a free concert experience. • Our purpose is to bring rich musical experiences into the classroom complementing their music education. • Over 3,000 student tickets provided to Kern County students.
