H

appy New Year to each of you. We are glad to have all of you join us for the first concert of 2016. Tonight we are pleased to introduce Guest Conductor Petko Dimitrov as he takes the stage for a great concert with the BSO. Just this week, we were blessed to have over 4,000 students attend our Young People’s Concert. This has become aan incredibly popular program for local school districts. One of the main aspects of our mission is to students through our youth education programs inspire st and it is eexciting to see the growth that is occurring in that area.

Tonight’s cconcert is dedicated to a very special patron who was with us since the beginning, Margaret Urner. Margaret recently passed away but her legacy will always concert in 1932 and has remained a dedicated supporter live on through the BSO. She attended the very first conce all the way through to the most recent concert in November. Novemb Margaret knew the value of the BSO which is why she was a very generous supporter, not only financially but also with her time. This is a legacy I hope continues to grow throughout our community. My heartfelt thank you goes out to all who have stood with the BSO for years, both in good times and in challenging times just as Margaret did. People like you are the reason we are thriving today.

Thank you for your kind support!

EUROPEAN JOURNEYS PROGRAM NOTES

Alexander Borodin is considered to be one of the founding fathers of Russian classical music. He and his fellow Russian composers believed that the operatic genre should be a major part of a national school. Borodin joined the so-called “Russian Five” and following his fellow composers’ initiative, began composing his major work – the opera Prince Igor. The libretto was suggested to Borodin by a critic and music advisor, Vladimir Stasov. Initially, Borodin was hesitant about using it; however, he decided to adopt the twelfth-century story and his work began. Prince Igor took eighteen years of Borodin’s life; unfortunately, he was not able to complete the opera. His friends Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov finished and orchestrated a big part of the score. We cannot say that Borodin actually wrote the overture to Prince Igor. Glazunov completed it, using some of the opera’s main thematic material and recalling Borodin’s intentions for the opening on the piano. Johannes Brahms

– one of the greatest Romantic composers known for his outstanding work – from symphonies to solo concerti, works for chamber ensembles and solo pieces. Brahms was a rather humble but ambitious person who always strived for perfection. His First Symphony took him twenty-one years to compose because he avoided presenting works in the most popular music genres at the time. Brahms didn’t feel worthy enough to be compared with Beethoven, who he admired profoundly. This probably explains why Brahms’ first non-concerto orchestral work was not a symphony, but Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Brahms’ friend Carl Frederick Pohl introduced him to Haydn’s Feldparthien (outdoor suites). Brahms was so impressed by the second movement of the first suite, “Chorale St. Antoni”, — that he copied it for his own library. This piece serves as the main theme for the Haydn Variations. Following the opening and presenting the “St. Antoni” theme by a wind choir, Brahms wrote eight variations and a passacaglia at the end, during which he gives free rein to the possibilities of variation form. The piece premiered in 1873 with Brahms conducting and in 1874, the two-piano version came to life. Brahms was also very closely connected with folklore. Traditional tunes and rhythms play important roles in Brahms’ music and probably his most popular composition is the set of twenty-one Hungarian Dances. The Hungarian Dances became Brahms’ most profitable work and the Fifth Dance instantly became the most popular. It was inspired by the csárdás by Béla Kéler titled "Bártfai emlék", which Brahms mistakenly thought was a traditional folksong. In any case, both the Fifth and the Sixth outstanding dances are full of contrasting colors, musical images and humor.

Antonín Dvořák

- Johannes Brahms was the one who helped Antonín Dvořák begin his career as a composer. Brahms was truly impressed by Dvořák’s work and recommended him to his own publisher, Fritz Simrok, who published Dvořák’s first major work – Moravian Duets. Later, Simrok commissioned the Eighth Symphony.

The G Major Symphony is often referred to as Dvořák’s Pastoral Symphony, reminiscent of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony or Brahms’ Second Symphony. The piece was written in the countryside of the beautiful town of Vysoká in 1889, where Dvořák retired. Far from the haste of city life, demands of performers and publishers, the composer felt eager to write a new symphony. “The music was just pouring out of me,” Dvořák once said. He composed the whole symphony in about two months and the premiere, which took place in 1890 in Prague, was a huge success. The whole melodic material, structure and harmonies are truly outstanding. A particularly memorable element in the piece is the trumpet fanfare in the last movement. The famous conductor Rafael Kubelík once said to the orchestra in a rehearsal, when it came to the opening trumpet fanfare: “Gentlemen, in Bohemia the trumpets never call to battle — they always call to the dance!”
