he energy and enthusiasm we experienced from the October concert has permeated throughout the community. There were over 1,300 in attendance including the largest group of students the BSO has had in its 84-year history. Where do we go from here? We have increased the amount of concerts by adding several special concert programs this year. These concerts have the potential to attract larger and more diverse audiences. To continue this level of growth for years to come, we need your help.

How you can support the BSO: Monthly or One-Time Donation $20 and Up BSO Next Sponsor Any Amount or Sponsor a Student for $210 Musician’s Chair Sponsor $2,500 to $4,000 Conductor’s Circle Membership $1,000 or more Concert Sponsor $5,000 or more Program Ads 1/6 to full page size available Young People’s Concert Sponsor Any amount BSO Endowment Legacy Gift These are a handful of ways you can support our mission to perform great concerts and provide music education to the young people of Kern County. ANGELS AND DEMONS PROGRAM NOTES

Ralph Vaughan Williams was an English composer who searched for diversity and opportunities to bring exciting, beautiful colors into his music. He sought to discover new horizons for his work and often incorporated English folk tunes into his compositions. During his travels to Paris he became close friends with Maurice Ravel, whose work was a great inspiration and served as a source for exploration of rich and diverse orchestral colors. He returned from Paris eager to put his new ideas into work. Vaughan Williams was also a devoted admirer of sacred music, particularly the work of Thomas Tallis who was considered “The Father of the Church Hymn”. In 1906, Vaughan Williams was asked to edit The English Hymnal. Having the opportunity to go through some of the “best and worst tunes” he discovered a group of nine beautiful melodies. He was particularly inspired by one of Tallis's tunes and used it as the foundation for the Fantasia. The Fantasia begins by presenting five of what Vaughan Williams called “magical chords.” The harmonies create a mystical, serene atmosphere. Although the Fantasia was written only for strings, the orchestration creates some outstanding colors and effects. The music was scored for three separate ensembles – two string orchestras and a string quartet. This form is quite unusual as the music travels between the very free theme of the exposition to well-organized sections that resemble a theme and variations structure. The way the music develops and floats in the dialogs between the different groups is truly magical. Although this was one of Vaughan Williams's early works, it remains one of his most popular compositions.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – The “boy genius” was one of the most important composers of the 18th century. His brilliant music, with its perfect structure, radiates emotion and can touch every heart. He was famous for his productivity and was able to compose symphonies in days and overtures overnight. Despite creating some of the most beautiful music ever known to man, it was of minimal personal benefit to Mozart during his lifetime. Although his operas La clemenza di Tito and The Magic Flute were well received, Mozart didn’t benefit much from this success. The Requiem was Mozart’s final work, unfinished at the time of his death. The genre is of sacred origin – a Latin mass for the deceased. Mozart’s health deteriorated toward the end of the 1780s, stirring speculation that he was metaphorically composing his own Requiem. In July 1791, Mozart was commissioned to write the Requiem by an anonymous person who was later revealed to be Count Franz Georg Walsegg. Mozart fell ill on November 20th and died on December 5th with the unfinished score on his desk. Not wishing to forfeit the fee from the commission, Mozart’s widow Constanze asked one of her husband’s students, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, to complete the score. Thanks to Süssmayr’s work, Constanze was able to deliver the Requiem to Count Walsegg in time to have the piece performed in his late wife’s memory. Unbeknownst to Mozart, the Count, an amateur musician, began a practice of commissioning works from competent composers and passing them off as his own. Count Walsegg planned to do this with the completed Requiem. The knowledge surrounding the creation of the Requiem had become more substantial as early as 1798, when some initial biographies about Mozart’s life were published. Mozart had significant financial and health struggles towards the end of his life. He was overwhelmed with feelings of his imminent death even before he began writing the Requiem and became convinced that he was actually composing his own funeral music. Although the Requiem is a mass for the dead, the music itself shows Mozart’s humanity and his love for life and beauty. The piece remains on the golden pages of musical literature as one of the most outstanding masterpieces ever composed.
