Letter from the President & CEO We are pleased to have you join us for the March concert. For many years now, the BSO has invited the Bakersfield Master Chorale and the CSUB Singers to be part of a very powerful performance. Tonight is no exception. Each one of our concerts showcases our talented local musicians as well as soloists both locally and internationally. It is our mission to bring wonderful performances to our community which inspires people to love and appreciate great music. We are also expanding our youth education programs by increasing the number of students who participate in our Young People’s Concerts as well as the number of children impacted by a new program called, “Inspire the Desire for Music.” This program sends our professional musicians into both the classrooms and afterschool programs. The objective is to inspire and teach children about musical instruments, experiences of a professional musician, and hear quartet music taken from movies and video games. This provides a wonderful connection and learning experience for the students which they will remember for a lifetime. I invite you to be a part of the important role the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra plays within our community. We are able to thrive with the generous donations and sponsorships of both individuals and corporations. Whether the donation is $25 or $25,000, it helps promote and sustain the important mission of the BSO. It takes the community’s support to drive successful BSO concerts and programs which adds to the character of Bakersfield and Kern County. The BSO E-news Letter keeps you up to date with exciting news and information about our performances, conductor search, next season details, and new concerts. In order for you to receive these updates, please sign up in the lobby or online at www.BSOnow.org. Thank you again for supporting the BSO,

BAKERSFIELD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 2013-2014 SEASON

Letter from the Music Director The Verdi Requiem is a magnificent work requiring the combined forces of an orchestra, a chorus and four vocal soloists. The Requiem presents substantial challenges to everyone involved in the performance. Highly skilled vocal soloists must produce beautiful tones over a very wide range, the chorus needs to be secure at many tempos and dynamic levels, and the orchestra must play with technical brilliance, yet not cover the soloists or chorus. All of this should be combined in a way true to the score which allows Verdi’s musical vision to be realized. Properly done, the listener should be moved by the beauty of the music and Verdi’s skill in setting the Requiem mass. We have all worked hard to prepare this wonderful masterpiece. I hope that you enjoy this evening’s performance. Musically Yours,

John Farrer Music Director

Requiem Giuseppe Verdi (1813 - 1901) Upon the death in 1868 of Gioacchino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi devised a plan whereby a number of the most distinguished Italian composers would collaborate in the creation of a Requiem mass dedicated to the memory of this great figure in Romantic opera. The work was to be performed only once in a church in Bologna, then sealed in the conservatory archives for use by later generations marking the celebration of Rossini’s birthday. Verdi provided music for the “Libera me” and twelve other individuals contributed one movement each. Ultimately, due to pettiness and intrigue among the producers, the performance never took place. (A commercial recording of the mass was eventually produced under the direction of Helmut Rilling in the 1980s.) Verdi, bitterly disappointed at the failure of the project, was encouraged by comments about his contribution, and he resolved to compose an entire Mass at a later date. The death four years later of Alessandro Manzoni, Italy’s greatest 19th-century poet, inspired him to make good on his promise. Verdi veritably worshiped Manzoni. To his publisher Ricordi, Verdi wrote: I am moved to the depths by the passing of this great man who belonged to us. I shall not go to Milan tomorrow; I could not bear to be present at the funeral. I shall come later to find the grave, alone and unseen. I may have a proposal to make to you as to how his memory should be honored.

This proposal proved to be the birth of the Verdi Requiem. The composer led the first performance on May 22, 1874, in the San Marco Church, Milan, with a carefully selected chorus of 120 and a hand picked orchestra of 100 players. Soloists were leading singers of the La Scala Opera (the soprano, Teresa Stolz, had two years earlier been Verdi’s first Italian Aida). The premiere was an unrivaled success with numerous repetitions of selections, and three more performances were quickly arranged for the La Scala stage. Verdi conducted it to further acclaim in Paris, London, Vienna and Cologne. A few critics railed at its blatant theatricality, but the most distinguished of these recanted. The Viennese Hans von Bülow, no fan of Italian culture, reconsidered, writing to the composer in 1892: “I have lately been studying your last works, Aida, Otello and the Requiem. The latter moved me to tears in a performance that was only mediocre.” Verdi divided the text into fifteen musical events, set as choruses, arias, quartets, and various combinations of these.

24

BAKERSFIELD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 2013-2014 SEASON

1. Requiem and Kyrie The opening chorus begins with whispered pleas for eternal rest. (The three descending cello notes with which the work begins represent “Re-qui-em.” They will return near the close of the mass in an a cappella setting for solo soprano and chorus, and also serve as the theme of the great concluding “Libera me” fugue.)

The hushed A major/minor opening is jolted by an abrupt switch to the key of F for a fugal hymn of praise (“Te decet hymnus”):

The solo voices then individually introduce the “Kyrie” section:

2. Dies irae The horrors and trembling of judgment day are immediately apparent in the thunderous “Dies Irae,” a theme to which Verdi repeatedly returns. The forceful off-beat bass drum part has become the signature of this mass. This, in the words of Fritz Stein, is the “central point and principal idea of the whole Mass.” [regarding the bass drum, note Verdi’s verbal instructions below.]

Supplicants shudder as distant trumpets approach and “drive all unto the throne.” A bass solo tells of Death and Nature stunned, and the mezzo-soprano of judgment records revealed.

The day of wrath returns, then a trio of soloists questions where to turn. (It is worth noting that whenever the text uses the first person singular, Verdi assigns the words to a soloist.) The male chorus evokes the “King of awful majesty” in a stunning juxtaposition of minor and major keys, and the soloists, joined by mixed chorus, plead earnestly for salvation. Where the text turns to personal prayers of contrition and remorse, beginning with the Soprano and Mezzo-soprano duet “Recordare, Jesu pie,” Verdi designed an extended section exclusively for solo voices. The tenor “Ingemisco,” as fervent an aria as any by Verdi, pleads for salvation and a place at the right hand of God. Evoking the confusion of the damned, the solo bass follows on its heels with “Confutatis.” Again the day of judgment returns before the “Lacrimosa dies illa,” which is a lament set for soloists and chorus based on a duet previously excised at the last minute from Verdi’s opera Don Carlos. 3. Offertory The Offertory for solo quartet differs from similar ensembles in Verdi operas in that here all four singers utilize the same melodic material, but the scope and breadth of this section equal any of his comparable operatic moments. 4. Sanctus The “Sanctus,” a fugue for double chorus, provides the most exhilarating portion of the Requiem, juxtaposing an ebullient fugal episode with moments of placid harmony, and climaxing with racing scales that encircle the gamut of orchestral sonorities. 5. Agnus Dei Two soloists open the “Agnus Dei” without accompaniment or harmony. As instruments and chorus are added, all join the unison chant. Harmony is added in a brief switch to the minor mode, then the major key returns in reverent pleas for the soul’s eternal rest. 6. Lux Aeterna Shimmering string tremolos and continuous figurations underscore the pleas of mezzo-soprano, tenor and bass for eternal light to shine upon the departed. 7. Libera me Soprano solo and chorus foresee the horrors of judgment in chant-like utterances and a tremulous arioso. The day of wrath is evoked one final time, preparing by contrast for the sublime a cappella rendering of the central text “Requiem aeternam” by soprano and chorus. The motive from the opening bars returns here and in the subject of the massive concluding “Libera me” fugue.

Verdi’s sense of drama comes to the fore in a relentless drive to a climactic cadence capped by a soaring soprano solo above a raging chorus. All culminates in a musical peak unmatched in any of his operas. Hushed final pleas for mercy bring the Requiem to a fervent close. In his Requiem Verdi gave this most dramatic of all sacred musical texts its most memorable setting, recognizable at once both in its heights of emotion and depth of spirit. Copyright 2014, J. S.
