Nutcracker 2014
PLOT SYNOPSIS It is Christmas Eve in Nuremberg, the city of toys. Governor and Mrs. Silberhaus are having a party and their children, Clara and Fritz, are excited to be allowed to stay up past their usual bedtime. They scamper about as their parents greet arriving guests. Clara and Fritz play host and hostess for their friends. The children dance and play games. Everyone is excited about the gifts under the tree, wondering which gift is theirs. To the surprise of the children, a very special guest arrives: Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara’s godfather. Drosselmeyer builds mechanical toys and clocks and has created some wondrous toys for the party including a wind-up doll, a harlequin, and a columbine. Drosselmeyer has also brought Clara a special gift – a large Nutcracker in the shape of a toy soldier. Clara is delighted, but Fritz jealously grabs the Nutcracker away from her. When she demands that he give it back, Fritz angrily throws it down and breaks it. Clara is very upset by Fritz’s cruelty to her new toy. All too soon the party is over and the guests go home. The family retires for the night, but Clara is unable to sleep and returns to see her Nutcracker. An army of mice appears, led by the terrible Mouse King. The Nutcracker is soon fighting for his life with the aid of the toy soldiers. The battle between the toy soldiers and the mice becomes a duel between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King. When defeat appears imminent for the Nutcracker, Clara helps the Nutcracker to victory. This act of devotion transforms the Nutcracker into a handsome prince. The Prince takes Clara on a magical journey to the Land of Sweets, and they travel through a forest in the snow. Snowflakes swirl in a beautiful and graceful waltz as the curtain falls on the first act. Continuing on their journey to the Land of Sweets, the Prince and Clara meet the Sugar Plum Fairy who welcomes them warmly to her kingdom. The Prince explains how he vanquished the Mouse King with the help of Clara. To celebrate the victory, Clara and the Prince are entertained by a variety of festive dances. We shall never know if this magical journey of delightful fantasies and sugar spun dreams was a dream – or did it really happen on Christmas Eve long ago?

Ann Conrad, Dance Director/Choreographer As a student at Civic Dance Center, Ann performed her first Nutcracker at the age of 12. After many Nutcrackers and continuous training with Civic Dance Center she was chosen to perform a season of the Nutcracker with the Contra Costa Ballet and completed several summer programs with both Contra Costa Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. Ann also had a great opportunity to travel during several summers to attend many Basque Music Camps, where she learned more about her Basque Heritage with a focus on dance and music. After graduating from high school she began teaching for Civic Dance Center which led to her helping choreograph and direct the Nutcracker. She helps choreograph and direct for the Imagine Ballet Company and MAD Dance Krew as well. Now, after 27 years of Nutcracker history, Ann still enjoys every minute of rehearsal time with her students. Ann is so proud of her two daughters: Natalie, who is in her 12th Nutcracker season and Chloe, who is performing in her 9th season of the Nutcracker. When not dancing, Ann and her husband Justin stay very busy with their four year old son, Christian. She is so blessed to have such a supportive husband and family that continue to support her year after year. Alicia Angelini, Dance Director/Choreographer Mrs. Angelini received her early dance training at Civic Dance Center in Bakersfield, under the direction of Cindy Trueblood, Kristen Doolittle, and Ann Conrad. From there, she attended the University of California, Irvine, where she had the opportunity to perform original works by various choreographers including ETC! by David Allan and a re-staging of William Forsythe’s “Steptext” by Douglas Becker. She graduated from UCI with a B.A. in Dance with a focus on Choreography. She then returned to Bakersfield to start a family with her husband, Chris, and they are now the proud parents of a wonderful son, Lucas, and a beautiful baby girl, Sophia. Alicia continues to teach and perform at Civic Dance Center, and she is the Co-director of the performing group, Mad Dance Krew. Her choreography has been showcased in various venues throughout the state with Imagine Ballet Company, Bare Bones Dance Theater, Troupe Civic and Civic Dance Center. In 2009, at the Regional Dance America Pacific Festival, Alicia was presented with the Monticello Award for outstanding emerging choreographer, for her work, “Rememberances.” Alicia is blessed to have so much inspiration her life, and she hopes to be able to share that blessing with audiences and fellow dancers for years to come.

NUTCRACKER SOLOISTS Scott Erwin Scott is performing in his 7th Nutcracker as the valiant wooden hero, which coincidently he claims is very close to his dancing style, stiff as a board. With encouragement from his wife, Rebecca, and his Civic Dance children, Austin, Zachary, and Kacey, Scott returned to performing after a two decade hiatus to share the joy and magic of this amazing ballet. In his youth, while a student at West High School, Scott joined the choir, including performing in the full chorus, the eight couple madrigal group, and the barbershop quartet. In his senior year he performed in South Pacific. Scott is a CPA and finance professional working with Aera Energy. He is proud and honored to join his children in their passion for dance in the 37th Production of THE NUTCRACKER. He is also thankful for Cindy & Kevin Trueblood, the Civic Dance Center, its dedicated teachers, and talented students. Jenai Wilcox Jenai had her first big performance at the Kern County Fair at the ripe old age of three. At the age of four she began dancing at Civic Dance Center and has continued to dance there ever since. Jenai is 16 years old and a sophomore at Bakersfield Christian High School. From performing as an Overture Boy in her first Nutcracker, Jenai has been honored to perform roles such as Russian, Snow Maiden, Dewdrop Fairy, and Clara. At West Coast Dance Explosion, Jenai received a teen elite title at the Long Beach Regionals 2014. She attended their nationals in Las Vegas 2014 and placed 7th national female elite teen out of 83 regional female elite teens. As a 5th year member of the Imagine Ballet Company, Jenai was chosen as an honor student for Regional Dance America Pacific in 2013 and 2014. Besides dancing, Jenai also enjoys competing in the pageant, National American Miss. In August 2014 she competed at the state level and won 3rd runner up Top Model and 1st place Talent. She would like to thank all of her teachers at Civic Dance Center for helping her become the young lady she is today. She would also like to thank her partner David Moreno for being a great partner and the best big brother she never had. “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” -Dr. Seuss. David Moreno David started dancing at Civic Dance Center when he was 17 years old. He has traveled the world making a living as a dancer. He returned to Bakersfield to further his education and pursue a career in the medical field. He currently works as a surgical technician at Delano Regional Community Hospital. David also teaches Jazz and Hip Hop at Civic Dance Center.

While attending UCI Samantha had the unforgettable opportunity to perform in George Balanchine’s ballet Serenade, as well studying with two outstanding choreographers: The renowned Donald McKayle who selected her to be a member of his Etudes Ensemble; and David Allen who has choreographed pieces for the New York City Ballet. After graduation from UCI Samantha remained in Southern California for two years training with Diane Diefenderfer at her Studio du Corps in Costa Mesa in order to become a Pilates instructor. After a brief time dancing in San Francisco, Samantha returned to Bakersfield where she now teaches Pilates at the Golden Youth Spa and Pilates Studio, and has furthered her Pilates training by obtaining three certifications from Balanced Body University; and has continued to be a member of the Civic Dance Center faculty. Samantha was one of the original members and Alumna, of what is now known as Imagine Ballet Company, having danced seven seasons as a principal dancer with the Company. Marvin St. Pierre Marvin returns for his 23rd Nutcracker season, donning the costumes of the distinguished Governor Silberhaus, and the fabulous Mother Ginger. What started out as a way to be involved in his daughters’ activities has turned into a Christmas tradition that he truly enjoys. Even though they no longer perform with him on this Nutcracker stage, they travel home to cheer him on. “Thank you Kaytie, Aimee, and Kellie for encouraging me with the finer points (or should that be pointes) of ballet.” What really motivates him to get out on the stage? The lady he admires most, his wife Kimm, so thoroughly enjoys it when he does.
